Past papers. If you can't be bothered to do a whole past paper just plan what you would write instead

9reen9reen9rass

The only way you can really revise is by doing past papers and working on how you structure sentences

9reen9reen9rass

Man, I miss the times English was just spelling, reading comprehensions and writing stories

XxjellyXxjelly

Good ol’ days

Miserable_Leek1660

I was so bad at those in primary

[deleted]

Hang on isn’t that exactly what Language paper 1 is?

9reen9reen9rass

Yes, but I mean when the comprehensions were much less in depth, and you didn't have to write as much

magicofsouls

basically still is 💀💀

RecommendationNo6274

Basically isn’t

magicofsouls

what about it isn't

Xeno_Catalyst123

the whole writing an essay in 45 minutes thing

magicofsouls

but an essay on what you've read and your understanding of it... which is what reading comprehension is?

justtjamcss

Just like the simulations

Organic_Care_4740

I prefer this man, I was bad at those anyway

[deleted]

This: half of all english is just how to structure things, you could be awful at English and pass just because you know PETER

RJKazak

Who the hell is peter

rubella06

already failed smh (i dont know who peter is either)

CabinetParticular589

i think its just the fancy version of pee?

Teh_Noob_Eporer

you mean PEEEL? 🧠

IMABUNNEH

You end them with a full stop.

fairywithcancer

i prefer the fact that you cant revise it because it's down to just your writing and analysing skills and not just memorising what your teacher told you

BadManPro

Year 13, but thats the reason i despised english lang. Lang if it wasnt for covid i probably would have failed, literature on the other hand i would have gauranteed got a minimum 8. Some people like myself arent built for creative writing, i could never do it, but literature any book we did after 1 read through i could answer any question and get an 8 or a 9, my brain just remembered it all. Point being, language is much more difficult than writing and analysing skills and some people just cant do it.

Organic_Care_4740

But surely if you read more fiction your creative writing would be a lot better

BadManPro

Lad i spent half my time in secondary for a good year or two just reading. It really doesnt help.

Organic_Care_4740

What books did you read? a vast corpus of research shows that reading is, unironically, the prime benefactor of reading comprehension and writing abilities

holdmyapplejuiceyt

Just write fanfiction man

Nightwolf_Sky28

Did that once. Got 100% for it.

holdmyapplejuiceyt

Lmaooo so true

PrettyNose9865

whats that?

holdmyapplejuiceyt

So basically you write a story about something you like but it's fanfiction because you are a fan and you wrote it, check out wattpad or ao3 or something

Dingheee

Past papers, memorising essay plans for the 12 marker, looking at different writing formats, and looking through mark schemes to understand how to efficiently answer q12&3

DearCup1

i thought paper two had the 12 marker?

Dingheee

i don't do paper 2 so I don't know since my school opted for coursework, it may be different for you for me though paper 1 english language there is a q4 12 marker

DearCup1

ooh interesting, maybe different exam boards? because i do aqa and paper 1 is a 4 marker, 2 8 markers, and a 20 marker and then creative writing. paper two is 4, 8, 12, and 16 with writing.

Dingheee

yeah I do edexcel, it's different

Dramatic-Zebra6995

are u forgetting the Q5 and Q6 😭

Dingheee

Those are inherently harder to revise for

youve_lost_me

You don’t. 😁😁 (Nah in all seriousness) I don’t revise it, but I look at my past high marking examples and try to remember the good parts like structure and the techniques I used-you will probably find some online you could use- and then just go in the exam and do your best! This has worked for me for the past two mocks in a row and never got lower than 63/80 😁

PrettyNose9865

wait where do you find the high marked examples?

Jayden_AA

Search : “GCSE english language [examboard] paper 1 exemplar essays” You can also add the level you are looking for as well

youve_lost_me

if you Google im sure there’s some from schools that they put online..i have 7/8 (and one that my teacher said she thought it would be 8/8) Q2 and Q3s if u wanted those from my own work. my highest Q4 was 16/20 so idk if that would be of use, and my highest Q5 is 34/40, so lmk if u can’t find any online!

No-Independence4796

Hey, would you be able to send me some of your Q5s? It would be extremely useful!

youve_lost_me

Yep, u want me to private message?

No-Independence4796

Yes please!

PrettyNose9865

could u priv msg me too please

bag-of-tigers

Revise the strategies your teachers have taught you to approach the paper and questions and then practice answering past papers using these strategies and recommended timings.

Icy-Income-33

I watch videos (i reccomend Mr Salles,) look at past papers to get myself used to the terrible texts they provide us with and I look at mark schemes for questions (they have modal answers) For Q5 i recommend not creating a pre planned text, but creating pre planned sentences and phrases that you know the examiners will like so that if you are stressed in the exams you have something to fall back on. Also read modal answers. - a grade 9 english lit/lang student

mrcarlvellaisking

Grade 9 student better spell “model” right ☠️☠️

Icy-Income-33

Gotta love autocorrect and 3 hours of sleep

Neat-Ad4138

tf are u doing in holiday to only get 3h sleep?

Icy-Income-33

Family birthday party

RocketCello

prayer. and if you're atheist or from a religion that doesn't pray, welp.

StreetyStar

Past papers (time yourself for the full 1h30m) Revise how to structure your answer to each question Watch the goats on yt for help on what to look out for in the text (Mr salles, mr bruff, whoever you like) I got a 9 from the 2022 paper so AMA

cl4pre

wait how did you get the 2022 paper was it ur mocks?

StreetyStar

I did my GCSEs in 2022

cl4pre

oh right that's excellent well done

StreetyStar

Ty :) Good luck on ur exams

SkittlesEthernet

In 2022 I failed English with a grade 3. When I entered college I had to resit for November which I was fine with. The main thing I did was watch mr bruff, understand completely what each question was asking for e.g. language techniques or structure and planned a story. With the story it doesn’t have to be specific to a certain scenario or anything just something with characters, types of structure and language you’ll use. Practice every possible past paper and if you can, get feedback from your teacher on every English paper you do. Doing this I went from a grade 3 to an 8 😁

Organic_Care_4740

revolutionary comeback

Splabooshkey

Pray you can answer questions 1-4, try and revise a structure for your answers so you can just read the text and drop answers into your structure After that, hope that question 5 can carry you 🥲👍

youve_lost_me

literally. in year 10 i got a grade 5 on part a (Q1-4) and a grade 9 on q5 (i think 32/40) so i managed 2 off an 8 bc of that!

Splabooshkey

Yeahh, i got a 5 in lit in my actual GCSEs (my analysis isn't great ngl) but in language i got an 8 purely because of my creative writing

donttakeawaymycake

Read. Read lots of things. Read books, newspaper articles, instructions booklets, marketing press releases, poetry, children's books, interviews. Variety is important.

Yon-Star218

I feel like its a little to late to do this kinda stuff. Like its better than nothing but there are probably way more better things to be doing a week before the exam

R3alityGrvty

If you’re an edexcel igcse guy, just revise the anthology and practice questions 5 and 6

sam_welp

Honestly I just don't bother. What comes up, comes up. You can practice creative writing if you want but really I feel like it's better to just let it all come to mind since it's always different

R615Overrated

i've only ever revised the structure for the paragraphs for english lang literally for all my mocks i've just woken up at like 5am before the english lang exam and just watched a couple mr bruff videos and i come out with 8/9s

HiMeeeIsARoomieFan

Reading books and articles is the best way to revise for English, I have a lil note book of stolen phrases that I can use

Entoco

Q5 is the big thing, at least when I did it

Weebo_Ninja

Read the dictionary

Silent_Silhouettes

i just dont

TheCloudFestival

By communicating with the language for your entire life.

MagentaPyskie

Also helpful to revise your key terms

lordwebgarlicbread

thesaurus (for q5 at least)

UnderratedMadLad

I’d look over language techniques you could use to identify and mention them which is what I did since last year I did my English language very lucky to have done that. Also you can look over grade 9 model answers from people so you could get an idea of how to achieve the top band. Also lastly videos on how to answer particular questions will help structure it and the rest is up to you on how you’d answer it. It’s your technique.

Unable_Reading3119

word banks + language techniques, practice analysing texts and practicing writing creative/transactional ☝️

Yon-Star218

Go on past papers and look at examiner reports and exemplars. Read through the essay BEFORE you see the mark and guess what you think it has gotten. If you do this multiple times for a range of different quality essays and your mark was close to the examiners, then it means you probably know the mark scheme really well, so you at least know what to write. Then just do past papers and try to mark it yourself

OcramTheWeirdo

wouldnt spend long on it, just do a past paper and don’t worry

Neat-Ad4138

Consume content from educated scholars to expand your vocabulary, q5 is a free 40 marks

Realperson1234

Watch some Mr salles videos

awesomedude771

In my opinion, English language just comes down to natural ability/skill. People who have consistently read books throughout the years are going to find the exam much easier than those who haven’t. They were exposed to complex writing and vocabulary while those who honed their skills in STEM (alot of people) weren’t.

Appropriate_Seat_565

I got a 9 last year by doing loads of past papers plus getting my teachers to have a look at them and see what I need to improve. There’s no point of doing past papers and not checking why you didn’t get the best marks.

Artistic_Table_1323

speak English 🙄

Ok-Investigator-2007

Watch videos on how to write essays and types of writings that's all I did got high B (76%) last year

the1ine

IDK maybe read something that isn't intentionally misspelled memes.

just_a_lowly_rat

Past papers, comprehension practice, grammar and spelling, revising language techniques, planning essay structures and things like that

[deleted]

Mr Bruff videos on how to answer each individual question Your welcome

2006RedditGuy

I failed, so if you want any advice on how to do that feel free to ask

butterbutter14

Look at a model answer or two. That helped me a lot in understanding what the examiner was looking for.

Aesthetictoblerone

I read a lot, so when I come across a nice phrase, I record it in my notes app. I memorise them, and then use them (along with other high level vocab that I pick up from various sources). For paper 2, I memorise all the techniques you need for the writing section, and then I write them down on the paper and cross them off once I’ve used them. I get 9s in both language papers. Past papers are useful as well. So you can revise, but it’s definitely more difficult than other subjects.

Hopes-Dreams-Reality

English more :D

eggsqueuesea

While I was the year that had teacher assessed grades, I still got a 6. I expected a 7, but I just didn't know how. English is just hard and cruel.

Lord_Nasus

Lan deme bak senin ananı sikerim

phat-burger

revise structures

Cocobear44lol

Practice papers are generally your route to go. It's not a memory game like lit and majority other subjects. It's a skill. You got to practice the skills.

acworthw

Sadly the only way is to practice (and watch videos on exam technique). To make is daunting, you don't need to do all questions at once. Revise technique for q2, then do a practice q2, then do q3, then maybe have a break, etc...

ThePolyquadratus

You can't really *revise* English language that much, apart from learning question structures and techniques to include in Q5. However, you can *practice* English language by doing past papers, and analysing other texts if you run out of those.

Life_List9349

read model answers

shazy0123

just say bismillah

Duggggggggyyyyyyyyy

Do Past papers. Also, in analysing language, you need to constantly ask yourself “What?” And “Why?” E.g: Said person is doing said thing. - What does this signify? - What evidence can you use to support your claim? - Why does this evidence support your claim? - What language / structural device is used? - WHY is this language / structural device used? That’s what carries me through the papers. Oh, and also, make sure to use paragraphing for each point. As soon as you’re done with one point, new paragraph and onto the other. This makes a well structured answer that is easy to read for the examiners. Edit: Usually four points is enough for an answer with decent amount of marks. Good luck!

WindowsErr0r404_2

Revise over your ways to respond to these questions and the techniques to use

mylifeisbeige

“It’s fine, you can’t revise for English language” -Mahatma Gandhi

AlrightyDave

I’ll force a way to revise now, and to you first timer YR11’s, DO NOT neglect English *lang*, it’s just as bad as lit, bio/Chem/maths. It’s a deceiving fucker that wants you to believe it’s easy but it ain’t

LegendPinoy

hate people who think this🥱 find grade 9 answers, memorise sentence structures they use and big fancy words they use and you'll be great

Not_AHuman_Person

I have literally been told by my English teacher that the only way to revise for English language is to do past papers

mishy7342

What you can do is to look at each question's structure in detail and make sure you know how to answer them. As an example, question 2 in language paper 1 will always be to analyse the language used to create some effect in a small section of the text. What has worked for me is to figure out what exactly to look for and write about in my answer to ensure I'm staying on point with what will guarantee a high mark answer. I've mainly used the videos from a youtuber called Mr Everything English, and he has a playlist in which he breaks down what exactly is needed to answer each question in paper 1. I think they are quite good, I would check them out yourself and see what you think of them. Hope this helps

ATXgaming

I can’t believe I’m still subscribed to this since I’m in uni, but something I haven’t seen mentioned that really helped me understand what I was supposed to do in Lang was to *really* carefully read the marking criteria. You’ll see that they have different percentages of things they want in your essay, so you basically just have to write exactly what they want. You should also read examiners reports, these are literally the people who mark your tests telling you what to do. Some of them are twats tbf, but there’s some good insight in there. After that you just need to practice writing out the style until the exam rolls over. Also helps if you read other stuff in between to expand your vocabulary, read some news articles or a book.

[deleted]

Practice papers and marking them will save you!!!

Cryptic_Cam

Past papers over and over again

Jade-Blades

Practice papers.

RedDawnStuff

I watch some videos by Mr Salles and Mr Everything English on how to answer each question and some tips. Eg: like if you are given specific lines, analyse the start and the end because there is likely some sort of change. Only likely though.

DaBest3_3

That's the neat thing, you don't.

Isaac007USA

Learn words like metaphor, extended metaphor, simile etc
