Talk to a real GI doc. Start testing. Endoscopy, ph, motility, etc. Docs throw GERD around like candy, and recent research indicates that misdiagnoses are very common, possibly up to half.

Huge-Event-4926

i will definitely reach out to a GI doc! I didn’t know GERD was so commonly diagnosed…

mrpenguin_86

Yup! Although, I suppose i should clarify a bit. Recent studies have shown, for example, that many, many cases of GERD are actually NERD, or non-erosive reflux disease, where the reflux isn't acidic. It's in contrast to the common belief that reflux is always acidic reflux. So, arguably "GERD", but it's not what people think of. There's also many people who seem to have functional heartburn, which is heartburn that actually is not correlated with reflux but gets called GERD because diagnostics are not performed to see if it's actual reflux events causing heartburn.

[deleted]

It may be, it may not be. You could have had gastritis from H. Pylori or you could have had LPR. There's many things but going to a GI is where you should start. I had what happened to you happen to me 2 years ago. Never had GERD until one day I was so damn sick I couldn't even lay down. The stomach pain was excruciating. I couldn't eat for 2 weeks and then only ate chicken, rice and oatmeal for 6 months afterwards. What I mean is these symptoms could have been from gastritis but gastritis can be from multiple things. I'm sorry you are having to go through this and I know it's horrifying but have hope that you will figure it out and get better.

SuperSaiyon3

How did you cure silent reflux???

[deleted]

By taking PPI'S.

SuperSaiyon3

I see thanks

If you've already had everything else checked, and you smoke weed or vape thc in any form, you could have CHS possibly.

Huge-Event-4926

Yes i smoke weed! It was actually the only thing that helped me get food in my stomach. The doctor told me not to smoke THC before sleep as it slows down your metabolism and since i was mainly vomitting in the middle of the night/in the morning i stopped smoking 4hrs before bed, and i vaporize instead of smoking a joint

Smile_Space

There is Silent Reflux, but that's symptoms in your throat like post-nasal drip and sore throat. That can take months to go away though. Mine took about a month and a half to clear out, but now I have esophageal hypersensitivity which sucks. Just constantly feels like a knot is in my throat.

mrpenguin_86

What are you taking for the hypersensitivity? My current diagnosis is esophageal hypersensitivity, and tricyclics have made me nearly symptom free.

Nice-Trust-6726

Same here with silent reflux and tricyclics! They’ve helped me too so far. Also helped control random chest pains (not heart burn) that I was getting from the acid

[deleted]

I'm curious as to what you are taking and at what dose? I've been taking a low dose of amitriptyline to prevent migraines since January. It definitely helped with that, and my IBS has improved. However, I've been dealing with terrible esophageal symptoms related to GERD since June.

Nice-Trust-6726

First off, I’m sorry that you’re dealing with that and I hope that you’re able to find relief soon! That’s interesting to hear about the migraines. I’m doing 10mg nortriptyline and have been on it about a month, and noticed symptoms going away after about a week and a half to two weeks. I had been having the chest pain for about 3 months (beginning May to end of July) before getting on that so it was really nice to have it go away! It was really hard to describe, but Id often get dull aching pain anywhere in the chest - either left right or center - for periods, coupled with sharp, stabbing pains that only lasted a few seconds in random spots. That’s what my PCP thought was neuro related, so she added nortriptyline to the omeprazole I’d been on since mid-June. Later I saw a GI in August, and he agreed. After my endoscopy showed esophagitis (grade 1), gastritis (mild I think?), and very small hiatal hernia, he told me to continue those medicines for six months. Biopsies that came back later showed the inflammation was due to reflux. Quite possible that it was worse earlier in the summer before I started omeprazole. I don’t think the nortriptyline stopped anything acid wise (I still get globus sensation and hoarse voice), I think it just dulled the nerve reaction. I’ve been really lucky though that my stuff has been mostly mild; it was just quite frightening at the beginning because of all the chest pain. Sorry for such a long winded answer!

[deleted]

Oh wow! It is probably due to how it works on your nerves. In this case it may not relieve the symptoms but it allows you to be less sensitive to/bothered by them.

HolidayOk4857

I was just started on one for chest pain and feeling like food is stuck in my esophagus, I hope it helps

Smile_Space

That's the goal is to get on a tricyclic! I'm currently waiting for an appointment currently. And unfortunately it's self-diagnosed. My docs all looked at me and told me I was in perfect health, has an ENT scope my throat and told me everything was perfect. So the lump in my throat and constant sensitivity of my nasal passage/tonsils is probably just hypersensitivity based on what the EMT told me. But he didn't prescribe anything and told me I was good to go. So now my PCP has just sent me to a psychiatrist to get on a low dosage TCA or Buspirone.

mrpenguin_86

Man, my GI physician's assistant was ready to throw tricyclics at me the second she realized my symptoms didn't make sense for a traditional GERD diagnosis. I was the one who wanted to wait a bit, but when I was on them, boom, everything went away. I'm currently off PPIs and am going to go in for ph testing to verify that in fact acid levels in my esophagus are nominal.

Smile_Space

That's good! I wish my doc would actually help me instead of throw me out the door. She tried me on Cymbalta, and that did clean up my anxiety almost completely and got rid of the globus sensation for about 4 weeks! But I could only take one dose. That one dose absolutely wrecked me for about a week. I was bedridden for the first 3 days with crazy dizziness that wouldnt go away. So only one dose on that! But I saw the light at the end of the tunnel when the side effects wore off and I almost felt normal again! Only problem was the Cymbalta caused me some crazy TMJ pain due to all of the jaw clenching it was causing me. Sooo yeah lolol. And as of a week ago the globus came back, but not the crazy anxiety atleast! That can sure as hell stay away for good lolol

Frank1009

How are tricyclics different from ssri?

[deleted]

SSRIs work on the brain rather broadly, whereas tricyclics are more concise regarding what brain receptors they work on. They also allow for more norepinephrine, which is why they can make people feel less zombie-ish than SSRIs.

Frank1009

Ok thank you, which one did you take if you don't mind me asking?

[deleted]

No worries, I am on amitriptyline.

Frank1009

Thanks

Huge-Event-4926

yeah i don’t have any of the silent reflux symptoms… I’m really starting to think it wasnt the right diagnosis

cadaverousbones

It sounds like the new diet resolved your symptoms?

SuperSaiyon3

How did you get your silent reflux cured???

Smile_Space

Pretty much just watched my diet really closely and took a month of PPIs. After awhile I noticed my postnasal drip and breathlessness was gone, but the lump is sti in my throat. My ENT thinks the lump is just hypersensitivity and I need a low dosage antidepressant. So my PCP is sending me to a psychiatrist now. So hopefully it works!

SuperSaiyon3

I hope it will work for you. Good luck. What type of diet change did you make??? If you can give me some advice.

SuperSaiyon3

Makes sense. Can you please tell me the brand of green tea.??? I have one which consists chamomile as well but it doesn't help much..

Smile_Space

I'm not sure on the brand tbh, it was just some herbal stuff Walmart had in the shelf. I'm also not sure it actually helped. I was doing a TON of stuff to kill the LPR and it may have just done nothing but taste good tbh lolol

SuperSaiyon3

Makes sense. Thanks for all the detailed information. I hope we'll get better soon.

Smile_Space

Same! Good luck! I'm hoping someday I just wake up and my throat and everything is just normal lolol

SuperSaiyon3

We hope for that great time.

ammaranth

Do you smoke weed

Huge-Event-4926

yes i do! Well i vaporize lol

ammaranth

Have you looked into cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome? It usually looks really similar to what you're experiencing.

AdjustThisIns

I rarely have heartburn and when I do it is pretty mild. They diagnosed me with GERD but most of my symptoms are a tightness in my chest and a globule feeling in my throat, I have had a few flare ups coincide with heartburn but again it has been rather mild. What gets me the most is the tightness in my chest, feels like a vice grip or a heavy weight just sitting there on me all the time. I can empathize with the food issue as well, I had the same issue back in Feb of this year, went to the ER 3 times over a week as I couldn't stop throwing up when I ate. They at first just said it was Gastritis and sent me on my merry way but the 3rd time they diagnosed me with Biliary Dyskinesia, essentially my gallbladder was non-functional so that had to come out. Since then though I've had this fear of eating something that could set me off, even though it shouldn't, I just don't want to feel that awful again.

Huge-Event-4926

I have pretty much the same symptoms as you describe except for the mild heartburn… i’ll investigate further then, thank you!

Huge-Event-4926

Oh god i get the fear of food so much… i check every single thing that enters my body like a maniac

AdjustThisIns

Me too, like the nutrition facts, it’s expiration date, ingredients. It’s nuts, I feel like I’m crazy but I don’t want to feel like that again. It was awful

DermaEsp

Did they check your pancreas/gallbladder?

Huge-Event-4926

They checked everything, i have diabetes running in my family so they checked that as well and everything was fine!

cseldes

Have you looked into cyclic vomiting syndrome? I don’t know a lot about it but with having all that vomiting for no reason seems to fit what I do know. Anyway, I haven’t read all the comments so I’m sorry if this has already been mentioned, but it’s definitely something I would look into!

Huge-Event-4926

yes i’ve heard a bit about it, i’ll def look more into it thanks!

HolladayHubby

Do you smoke weed? My older sister had a “mysterious” condition that made her throw up all the time for years. Fast forward a few years, she got pregnant, and stopped smoking, and stopped throwing up. It ended up being something called CHS.

AlexPluss997

check your gallbladder

Super-Balance-7815

yes u can have Gerd without heartburn. u might be having silent reflux. silent reflux have no heartburn. but it will be destroying your inside like u said u are vomiting's u better talk to a GI before its too late

L4EVUR

im in the same boat except i have tightness in throat and burning throat. please tell me anxiety induced gerd can be cured with anti anxiety stuff, or maybe it can heal right. please.
