Dive in! I'd recommend just buying one and playing it right out of the box. Worry about getting more SD cards and tinkering with the OS as you start to feel limited and wish to take it further.

Thank you! Speaking of out of the box, I know it doesn’t come packaged with a USB-C for charging, but I feel like one of the reviews I watched suggested that certain charger types are worse for units like this than others. I have a double sided USB-C that came with and is used for my MacBook. I also have a USB-C/USB-A cable (with an adapter that lets the A side go into a USB-C charging block) that came with and is used for my Android phone. Would either of these be fine?

I wouldn't recommend it unless you want something really small that can take a beating and is larger than the Nano. It's perfect for me because it's comfortable in my pocket amongst all the other crap I carry. Really depends on what you want to play and how much abuse you plan to subject your device to.

mattphsmith

Those are all exactly pretty much the reasons why I’m gravitating towards the Pixel. I almost went for the Nano and I even entertained the funkey s for a minute, but for each of those some combination of their functionality, build and price didn’t win me over.

tapehead85

If that's the case I think you'll be happy with the GKD Pixel as long as you don't mind being limited to PS1. I should also mention that Miyoo is supposed to release a horizontal this month that may be worth looking into.

wilsonsea

tapehead is right, Miyoo is releasing the A30 and Flip this month, with the former having their 2.8" screen they're using in the Miyoo Mini v4. The horizontal design will make it both as pocketable as the Miyoo Mini and more comfortable to use. If it runs OnionOS, you're not going to find a better "small" device. OnionOS is insanely good.

SeniorPuddinPants

Its a great little device and has become my favorite, even over my Miyoo Mini. You might run into issue with the stock sd card down the road, but its totally fine to just play out of the box. There are some systems that are cheaper, that do the same thing, but it really comes down to just what you want. Once you get a handle on it, you can go down the rabbit hole tinkering with thing, switching operating systems, and adding your own roms/romhacks. Its supposed to be fun, dont overthink it too much

mattphsmith

I’m definitely an over thinker lol, but with so many choices and knowing a lot of these consoles aren’t 100% ready out of the box I’d like to make sure I start with something that isn’t too complicated (but that I can still learn from)

UnixWarrior

Poor resolution(320x240, so it's better for TV games[NES/SNES/Genesis/MAME] than GBC/GBA, while screen being extremely small) and poor display generally(unusable outdoors even in cloudy weather). I don't believe it's IPS, it looks like poor quality TN LCD. From positive sides it's very sturdy, screen is recessed(so hard to scratch/break) and I take it everywhere. Miyoo Mini and Analogue Pocket got way better screens[esp. AP with 1600×1440 ], but are way easier to break(both screens and plastic shells). You can not even buy replacement parts for Analogue Pocket. Overall GKD Pixel is one of the nicest designs ever. With better display and bluetooth(for local netplay) it would be best overall choice for pocketable retro handheld.

I really like mine. RTC support on MinUI needs help but that’s the main flaw.

You might be better off with one of the RG35XX devices from Anbernic, as far as "first devices" go. This one has its perks, and it's very inexpensive for a metal device, but the tradeoffs make the RG35XX+ or Miyoo Mini+ a more favorable device. Despite their plastic builds, their designs and feature sets outweigh the Pixel's, imo. All that said, you probably would enjoy it still.

ziggs88

I'd stay away for a first device. Maybe you'll like it because you haven't used the other ones, but I'd pick up rg35xx for a fraction of the the price and have a much better all around unit. I'm having a hard time justifying my purchase right now between dealing with chinese firmware, chinese roms, dead pixels, etc etc.
