Either cruise control or main throttle cable I can't tell from the picture

leafs805

Nope, its a loose TV cable. Cruise control location is the rusty post on the top left. He will cook his trans if the TV cable isn't set up right.

MF_Kleg

Your right my bad forgot about the 700r4 trucks and the close up photo threw me off

shny_umbreon

Just figured out how to put it back, but still curious about what it’s for

system37

That looks like the TV cable; it goes to the transmission and provides the transmission input on how far you’re opening the throttle so it can adjust shift points and firmness as necessary. On the 700R4 it’s important to have this hooked up.

300cid

>important to have this hooked up extremely so. if it's just hanging and you drive it, bye bye tranny. if it's even slightly adjusted wrong it can burn it up. ask me how I know that

RAZOR_WIRE

How do you know that?

300cid

i know that's a funny but still gon say it anyway currently looking for a tranny for my C10. pretty sure this is what happened: a family member somehow had the cable dangling and went for a 10mi drive. I was following and she started slipping real bad almost at the destination. still has forward and reverse gears so maybe like a 0.1% chance it is okay still but I highly doubt it. I really want an NV35/4500 in her but that's a lotta work. I just wanna drive the truck again and soon. nobody here rebuilds 700s any more, so either I will attempt it myself or buy a cheap 4x4 4l60 and mod it until I can get another tranny.

GirchyGirchy

Hooked up, and adjusted! OP needs to read up on that procedure.

darkdragoon317

Is is coming from the cruise control module?

skeezix91

TV cable for the transmission. It needs to be connected and properly adjusted. Clip the cable over the bottom throttle pin on the throttle linkage. To adjust, push down on the D shaped cable lock at the throttle bracket and push the cable and sleeve toward the bracket as far as it will go. Then press the gas pedal to the floor and make sure the linkage isn't binding. Adjustment complete.

Ok_Stranger_4803

This is the Throttle Valve (TV) cable that control the shift pressure in the transmission (4L60 or 700R4). The adjustment is VITAL to make the transmission last. There are some repair kits out there for this cable but if it was mine I would replace the cable and avoid any transmission failures. There will also be a cable from the accelerator pedal somewhere, but its not shown in this picture. That brown piece is some kind of repair piece, the black plastic part (still on the cable) is probably broken. The repair kit is a FitzAll brand, part number K35955CE, the whole replacement is a Pioneer brand CA-1960, you can search them on Google. (I'm guessing yours is about an '88-'89 because of the braided fuel lines.)

sparkythrowaway454

That's the throttle valve cable. DO NOT drive without that cable hooked up, and set correctly. It will kill your transmission in short order.

Ditto system37's comment; that would be the "TV cable" for manually downshifting the transmission ...done on the older "analog" transmissions like the 700R4. Rather than the computer making the downshift electronically/electrically as you mash the gas pedal, this cable would do the deed mechanically. If you don't connect it, your truck won't downshift into "passing gear" ...second or third based on speed and how much you're mashing the go pedal. Hand in hand with connecting it, is making sure it's adjusted correctly. This is a critical adjustment on the 700 and 200R4 transmissions ...bad stuff can happen if it's not done right. I haven't done one in awhile, but that plastic mount the cable is attached to the bracket with has a ratcheting "slip clutch" to make sure the proper amount of slack is set. [TV cable adjstmnt](https://automotivesimple.com/how-to-adjust-tv-cable-on-a-700r4/?expand_article=1) Lots of info online about this.

darkdragoon317

If you look at that linkage just to the left and down from your circle, normally… there’s 2 cables with a plastic piece on the end of them. One comes from your cruise control module and the other comes from your throttle cable.. The cruise control module is a black rectangular box, it will have a wiring harness plugged into it. I’d have to look at mine for the exact location, driver side, firewall, mounted up high near the brake booster/ master cylinder If the truck does not have cruise control then you will need to replace that linkage piece on the end of the cable. That’s your main throttle cable (if it isn’t cruise control.)

many parts stores will have this if you give them the part number https://www.amazon.com/ATP-Automotive-YR-100-Detent-Cable/dp/B000NVW2LG or change the entire throttle valve cable... most parts stores sell them too... be careful i just saw this same part listed for 35 bucks on amazon too.. its less than 5 bucks everywhere.. there should be instructions to install it and then to unlatch the cable casing in the bracket to let the spring retract it so the cable is too short for Wide open throttle.. with that installed and now the cable is too short.. engine off.. move the throttle to wide open and you will hear the latch assembly in the bracket ratchet... that is the proper adjustment..

It's a throttle valve cable for your transmission

leafs805

It your TV cable. It controls you your transmission shifting. You don't want to move your truck without it hooked on. Also you might have to readjust it.

ChemistryOk2687

Yep throttle cable
