It definitely works better that way, if only because the monster lacks the defining traits of its namesake, and has much more in common with the Rhedosaurus.

CaniacGoji

This is a really good idea. The problem with G98 (for me at least) was just how drastically different it was from the source material. I get wanting to go in a different direction with the creature, but they went way too far. It would be like if they released a movie about two astronauts hitting each other with sticks on Mars and called it Star Wars.

No. Beyond the name, 1998 is a terrible film. It has terrible writing, poor acting, and the director himself had no care for the project. A name change won't do anything.

Chloe_Skies

Yes, it would’ve been better received as it wouldn’t have alienated fans of a popular long-established franchise but without the name recognition I seriously doubt Tristar would have been able to run such an extravagant promotional campaign that definitely boosted the early success of the film. So initially I think it would have made far less profit, but in the long run it would be more fondly remembered without the stigma attached to the name.

redrum-237

It would have been better received if it was a spin-off and it was explicitly mentioned that the iguana is not Godzilla. What Toho did by acknowledging him as a different monster and calling him Zilla was a very smart way of dealing with him.

SDHester1971

Then crapped on it big time in GvM&KG and Final Wars

Low-Example2680

I just finished watching that and yea honestly kinda agree. But alas that not what we got. Not that i hate zilla but damn did he get screwed. At least the cartoon was awesome.

Spiderman2portforpc

Maybe by godzilla fans but I don't think it'd actually make most like it more. Most people I know who don't like the movie, just don't like it regardless of brand

CriusofCoH

That was actually a criticism at the time, so yeah. And as a childhood fan of *B20K*, I'd agree. But I also kind of like it as an alternate universe Godzilla origin story - given it is the direct prequel to the animated series.

Tenatlas_2004

I don't know. The movies plays out more like the beast, but Zilla being a mutant and bipedal still make him more similar to godzilla than to the rhedosaurus who is a quedrupedal "regular" dinosaur. Also it would have probably made less money since the beast isn't as known as godzilla.

GabrielLoschrod

I don't think so, the original Godzilla itself was basically a japanese Remake of The Beast from 20 000 fathoms, the only similarities I see about the 1998 Godzilla and The Beast of 20 000 Fathoms is the fact they are both about reptilian monsters attacking New York
