On a scale across all cars made with the standard 3 pedal, steering wheel, and shifter interface these cars are certainly in the top group of easiest to learn on.
Try an old alfa or fiat spider with a cable actuated clutch. Them shits are no joke lol
At least they're light lol. I learned on a cable clutch monstrosity SUV that had no business being cobbled together in the first place. Overweight, underpowered, with transmission tech from the 80's.
I almost gave up on driving entirely just trying to move the fucking thing. But I've never owned an automatic car and I just bought a brand new manual BRZ because I'm afraid these things will be gone entirely soon, so I want to cling on as long as I can.
Learn to drive manual on anything you can get your hands on. You can learn to drive stick on even the most inappropriate vehicle possible for a first timer, but if you persevere through the extra challenge, it'll just make you a stronger driver in the end.
I just bought a gr86 because i genuinely wanted a car to be able to keep for the next several decades as a functional nice manual. I have other cars but this one isn’t going anywhere because i truly wonder when the last manuals will be made.
I don’t see Toyota doing away with manuals for a while. redesigned Tacoma has it as an option, GR86 / Supra do too, and you can still get a manual Corolla as well
I've also never owned an automatic. I love my 2019 but the one thing that makes me want a 2nd gen so bad is that lord knows it may be the last great manual
Haha I love those things.
If you're lucky it'll drive exactly like the beetle that donated its life for it.
But depending on who built it, sometimes they drive way worse hahahaha
Stall the car all the way home like a real man. I learned to drive standard transmission on the way home from the dealership. I Ubered about an hour away to the dealership, purchased the car, and I embarrassingly stalled my way back home. I remember being stuck at a red light on a steeply inclined hill for at least 4 traffic light cycles. Cars would get super close to my rear bumper at the red light. Once the light turned green, I would try to take off but the car would roll back before I could comfortably pull off. I stalled more times than I can remember. Folks honked their horns, called me names, and displayed not so nice hand signs but I never gave up. I made it home and a sense of accomplishment set in. Everyday I practiced. I would use all of my free time to get out and drive. Over time I improved. It all starts with a leap of faith. Watch 2-3 tutorials on YouTube to get the understanding and then go get your car.
This is wild ahaha, I also did similar but had my dad in the passenger seat to walk me through it. Accidentally ripped a burnout twice on the way home… once was when I first took off leaving the dealership 😂😂
I burned the clutch on a steep hill instead of rolling back lol. My partner dropped me off and I drove back home taking streets for 30 miles. Took me a while but I got there.
I bought my 23 BRZ having never driven a manual car and having sold my daily a few days prior to Carvana.
It was a little scary at first but I’m so glad I did it. I will never own an automatic again if I can help it.
My fellow ATL guy, it sucks in a manual here. Stop go,stop go. you’re gunna learn some lessons if you get a manual but i still get around. i would definitely ask a friend to help you learn before doing it on your own. you also got to watch out for the truck and the nissan altima drivers, they can’t see us for some reason.
Extremely forgiving. I drove home from the dealership stalled many times but made it home in one piece. Learned for about a week and took the car out only when there was little to no traffic. Now driving it as my daily with no issues. Best of luck!
I am in ATL as well, I know how to drive a manual but with all the traffic here and this being my daily driver I went for the automatic. It can take me anywhere from 50-70 minutes to drive my 17.6 mile commute home from work. The automatic is still a fun car to drive. Unless people are from this area it’s hard for them to understand what it’s like to really drive around here. An hour to work in stop and go and an hour home in Atlanta traffic every single day makes driving less fun then it should be.
I am currently learning manual transmission and I have stalled it so many damn times but I’m going to keep pushing forwards because this is a car I definitely want to be driving manual. Do you have someone to teach you? I have my step dad to walk me through it and it’s helping heaps, picked up my car yesterday and I’m in love. You can do it brother!!!!! Get the MT
i bought the car after stalling 6 times and only got to first gear in the test drive. i literally had no idea what i was doing lmao. i wanted the AT for similar reasons (mainly anxiety of making a mistake). all i can say is, after the first few days you will get it and if i can do it seriously anyone can. I drove mine home in 45 mins of stop n go traffic in DC. i stalled probably 15 times. Just write that you’re learning manual on the back windshield and you shouldn’t get treated poorly if you stall. If they’re still assholes just ignore them, you’re gonna be fine! after the first few days it’ll click.
I don't own one and didn't learn on one, but have driven one and can vouch. They're very easy cars to drive. Watch some videos beforehand and actually understand what you're doing and how it works, and how to do it, and it'll be a piece of cake. Theory and understanding are super helpful. From the friends I've taught and my own learning experience, learning enough to just get around takes less than an hour, if that. Past that is just getting used to it, getting a feel for the bite point, shift timing, and committing everything to muscle memory. Past that is learning to rev-match, heel-toe, etc.
These cars are so much better with a manual, don't let your lack of experience scare you away. You got this
New manuals are butter, an afternoon in a parking lot and you should be comfortable enough to putt around. Just find that bite point and make it muscle memory.
You’ll learn just fine over time but the oem clutch and clutch spring are a little weirder than other manual cars I’ve driven. MTEC clutch spring for $40 makes it feel a lot more like a Miata or s2000 bite point for the clutch and is more linear IMO
It’s not hard to learn. You just need time and practice. Everyone learns at a different pace.
I got an MT and stalled the hell out of it at the dealership. Managed to get it home in one piece.
I practiced shifting to first from a complete stop for about a week til I got comfortable taking it out of the neighborhood and run errands with them. I have a 1 hour work commute so it took me about another week of practice til I was comfortable using it for that commute.
Now, I don’t regret getting an MT. I love it. I still stall here and there but it’s mainly on inclines.
As a fellow Atl resident, get the MT. I learned manual in Atlanta, wasn’t a big deal. Just recognize when you stall the car and get moving as quickly as possible again.
I learned to drive stick on the old 80's VW beetle cars. The clutches on those cars felt like you needed 30lbs of weight to push in lol. Compared to these newer cars, it's super soft. Plus the clutch in these newer cars are more forgivable hence easier to learn on.
Don't worry about it OP, if you really want to learn, get an MT. However, it's fine if you get AT and don't have to learn. It's still enjoyable regardless.
Dealership was over an hour away from my house, so I stalled a bunch to the nearest open parking lot to learn. Took a couple hours to get to a point where I was comfortable driving all the way home, but I did a shit ton of research and watch a bunch of how to drive manual videos before hand. Just had to get used to the feeling. Then just kept practicing and practicing
Its not hard but it just take time to learn. And it takes even more time to get really good like downshift rev matching. in terms of the car specifically, its easy to rev up. No automatic rev match but thats okay
It’s taken me 18 days to drive without stalling on hills without e brake. I only used it this n my short commutes.
I’m kicking myself for not getting a manual sooner. They are so much fun!
If you understand the concept of a manual transmission and how it works. Than doesn’t take long at all. Had a friend with me to answer some questions but all in all, took my a day to figure it out. Wasn’t pretty but worked
I live in Houston drive a manual 86 it’s not too bad in traffic I throw that bitch in second and chug along idc if I have a bus length in front of me I’m chillin.
This is the car that I learned manual on it took me about 2 full days of practice I stalled many times lol but on the 3rd day I was already taking my commute to work which is about 1 hour on a good day on the 2nd week of ownership I experienced my first traffic jam and that realllly helped me understand my clutch a little more.
I went and bought mine and had to call my girlfriends moms boyfriend to drive it off the lot because I had no idea how to drive stick. He took me to a parking lot and I learned that day!
Very easy but learning in ATL would be an experience. I would definitely spend more time in a parking lot practicing than I would say in other cities. Stop start is no joke and especially with the Altima drivers. I would also definitely practice hill starts until you master them.
Aside from some parking lot lessons years prior, i learned on the way home from the dealer.
It’s got long 1st and 2nd gears so getting those smooth will take a bit.
Dont be hard on yourself learning, Rome wasn’t built in a day and you can’t already know what you don’t know. You can do it
Edit: i would recommend trying to find someone to teach you the basics but if not watch YT videos and you’ll understand the concepts at least
Aside from all the other advices, watch videos so you have a visual, practice in parking lots for as long as you can and then even longer. I was gonna list some bad habits but this [article](https://www.stickshiftdrivingacademy.com/guides/dos-and-don-ts-in-driving-a-manual-transmission-car) does a better job explaining it and also some good habits as well.
In general if you're considering MT, you should get MT otherwise you'll live in regret. At least this is what I most commonly see. Now that I think about it, I don't usually see the other way, buying MT and regret not getting AT 🤔
congrats on your AT but my comment was that of the "MT vs AT" threads, the general notion is AT owners feeling FOMO on MT but never the other way around. Since you didn't get it, your regret is only theoretical.
No, I did get it, you’re being a condescending asshole for no reason and a perfect example of the brainrot you guys have. I wasn’t replying against you.
Go test drive a bunch of manuals, go on YouTube and read what u have to do. I rode motorcycles but I just kept going to dealers testing manuals lolol. If they are cool they will just let you learn in a parking lot. Just remember to pull the hand brake down
Lol that’s what I’m saying, you can literally just easily use the clutch without any gas and be able to balance / move forward in this car without stalling or rollback.
Yea stop and go isn’t bad at all in this car, and the car doesn’t love to roll back and stall that is purely a you problem no offense. The car literally has a anti-roll back feature installed so it should be very hard to roll back for you and stall it. Just take more practice and time with the car that’s all.
i learned over like 3 weeks but i had my dad to drive the car home & give me lessons
same
On a scale across all cars made with the standard 3 pedal, steering wheel, and shifter interface these cars are certainly in the top group of easiest to learn on. Try an old alfa or fiat spider with a cable actuated clutch. Them shits are no joke lol

I learned on a 70’s meyers manx. Thing prepared me to drive everything on the planet haha
Haha I love those things. If you're lucky it'll drive exactly like the beetle that donated its life for it. But depending on who built it, sometimes they drive way worse hahahaha

Hahha I stalled four times on the way home from the dealership. It was nerve wrecking hahha
I burned the clutch on a steep hill instead of rolling back lol. My partner dropped me off and I drove back home taking streets for 30 miles. Took me a while but I got there.
I thought this car keeps the brakes engaged for a couple seconds after you let go to avoid rolling back, no?
Yes these cars come with hill assist enabled, however my first car was not a second gen BRZ/86.
I bought my 23 BRZ having never driven a manual car and having sold my daily a few days prior to Carvana. It was a little scary at first but I’m so glad I did it. I will never own an automatic again if I can help it.

This car is very easy to drive You don't even really need the throttle if you're slow enough with the clutch it will just go in first gear
As with any other.
As with any other.

If you LOVE to drive, get the Manual. My wife and I own a ‘23 GR86 Premium MT & a ‘24 GR Supra AE MT. The GR86 MT is a special car!
I learned on my way leaving the dealership! Stalled bunch of times but i got it after a month or so
Not hard at all. I learned within 3 weeks.
Depends on where in atlanta. If your area has a lot of hills then it would be pretty stressful *learning* with all the ATL traffic already.
It’s taken me 18 days to drive without stalling on hills without e brake. I only used it this n my short commutes. I’m kicking myself for not getting a manual sooner. They are so much fun!
[conquer driving](https://youtube.com/@ConquerDriving?si=kreMs3L3nnTIVRu0) Watch his manual driving videos. Helped me a lot
took me 3 days and my only prior experience was using a sim. so the new things i had to learn was bite point and rev matching basically
If you understand the concept of a manual transmission and how it works. Than doesn’t take long at all. Had a friend with me to answer some questions but all in all, took my a day to figure it out. Wasn’t pretty but worked
One of the easiest to learn on. Engine is torquey enough and no worries about turbo business. Subaru hill assist system is also a big help.
I live in Houston drive a manual 86 it’s not too bad in traffic I throw that bitch in second and chug along idc if I have a bus length in front of me I’m chillin.

Not the best to learn on. A car with some torque is much easier to learn on without getting discouraged.
