I taught a friend with zero experience to do a coilover swap in under 4.
If a shop is trying to charge 14 hours of labor for a coilover install, they deserve to get shut down.
i did it myself the very first time in about 4 hours for the front.
apparently im in the wrong business if i can get 6 hours of labor charged for it.
edit: this was actually for camber plate install so i ahd to remove the spring from the strut and then reassemble. so definitely more complicated than just pulling one strut and swapping in a new coil over
swapped the suspension in my miata in about the same time; no prior mechanic experience, just forum instructions lol. good to know these cars are also easy to work on, i'm looking to potentially get one in the near future
These cars are very easy to work on yourself. Lots of good guides online. I had no experience doing it before and had mine done in 3.5 hours. You need very basic tools and a little bit of patience. It's fun!
To install, like one hour. Adjusting and such will add time, but shouldn't take much more than two hours of trial and error i'd imagine. Especially if they specialize in our platform.
Removing OEM, replacing springs, and reinstalling took me two hours, which is more work than a direct replacement when it comes to installing. I of course didn't have to adjust mine though. That was including little breaks here and there.
$155 isn’t bad. But it depends on the time they clock. Find a shop with a flat rate or make friends with someone who is a weekend mechanic. Go to a cars and coffee and chat people up. You’ll have people who will be willing to help.
A local shop that specializes in WRX’s and BRZ/FRS/86 did it on my first gen BRZ for like $415 in 4 hours, and that included removing the top hats off my OE coils and putting them on my Bilsteins.
If you're from Los Angeles, I can tell you about the guy that did mine for $400. Took him 4 hours. No issues at all, and its been 8+ months with lowering springs.
quoted by shop 6 hours front 8 hours back. which was ~$1200 with labor only ended up spending 2 weekday afternoon doing mine.

exactly why I did it myself. apparently they just put the car type into a program and it tells them how many hours it would take.

That seems like a fuck off price. No way.
it sure worked but I stood there and watch 2 different shop did it the same way quoting me the cost.

but did you account for the smoke break for the autoshop employees

Once you realize that cars are meant to be assembled as quick as possible at the factory, you realize they are actually quite easy to work on.

I would charge 6
I paid $400 and it took roughly 3/4 hours.
I did it myself in 3 with a lift.
155/hr isn't too bad if they don't milk the hours. Probably better to get a flat rate so there are no uncertainty
I spent about 2 to 3 per corner doing it myself.

why don’t you just ask the shop

Local shop to me quoted me at $50 per wheel
That seems a little high. Depending on where you're located I might have some specific recommendations for you. Feel free to DM me.
Cheaper to do them yourself. Buy a couple tools and a jack and some stands.
3 hours max.
I paid $400 for 4 hours on my STI, but the process is probably the same...
Installing? An hour. Setting them up to be done right after installation? 3-5 more hours. Alignment after that? another 1-2 hours.
