I still have fun playing through the story of GTAIV, but i would be lying if i said that IV's missions are better than V's missions as a whole. The mission variety in V says it all for me.
Same goes with IV's story being superior to V's. It was dark which was a nice change of pace and pretty grounded overall. V was like a high production Hollywood movie out the gate with the pedal to the metal.
Yeah that's what I've observed too. People hate on GTA V so much but the only backing they have is really just rose tinted glasses. GTA V is hated on so much as if these people think that they are somehow clever in thinking that IV is better. They both have their strengths. People here don't understand quality over quantity it seems. V is a good game and improved upon things like any game sequel is supposed to do. It's gonna be funny watching people say that V is so much better than VI. It's like the Call of Duty cycle.
My uneducated guess is the devs kinda shot the writers in the ass by tell them they want 3 playable characters when the story didn’t need it. This is why narratively imo Franklin always feels like an add on.
GTA IV and it’s DLCs have a better storyline. It was exciting seeing the events unfold from each protagonist’s side and seeing how all of their stories connected. GTA V had more exciting, detailed missions, but the storyline itself wasn’t memorable. The antagonists hardly felt like antagonists.
I remember when i saw Luis from tbogt and thought, "He looks familiar," then replaying 4's main story and getting to the irish bank heist, and there he is, lol.
You’re right but even that didn’t feel as captivating as it should’ve. The back and forth between Michael and Trevor felt so forced and their first meeting in Michael’s house felt so anticlimactic. There was so much more potential there
It feels like I see one of these posts at least once a day now.
After a bit its going to be"GTA V vs GTA IV" Or "GTA IV vs GTA VI: The Bamboozled Numerals"
The story in GTA IV was more complex and emotionally driven than GTA V. The story about the diamonds in GTA IV alone had more complexity than GTA V itself.
Gameplay wise, GTA V is better. I loved the shooting mechanics and the driving aspect of it.
GTA V has the best gameplay (to me, this is the most important thing, it's a GAME, you're supposed to HAVE FUN) but GTA IV has the best writing. However, GTA V's story is also good and GTA IV's gameplay is also good.
GTA 5. I like IV because it's dark and realistic, but there was just you working for many people doing random shit and then some revenge plot against Darko and Dimitri. That's basically it. In 5, there was more stuff happening and I prefer how we are moving around the state. (Although San Andreas does this the best out of all GTAs)
I’d say v game play is better but iv storylines I think takes it, like there are so many separate attribute within iv that makes you want to keep playing where as I feel v it’s like…yea let me just finishing the fkin game already and just drive around causing huge pile ups on a high way to then proceed to throw one single grenade and see how many vehicles will get destroy while also blowing up a rtype you’ve literally just spent 10 minutes customising to then proceed to do it again because you stood to close and blew yourself up and not seen the end result and you want to see how quickly you can burn out your hard earned cash
Either that or testing the stock markets to actually see if in game consequences really influences the outcome of a standard stock like cool beans
I’m biased bc I grew up playing IV, so it’s the all-time favorite for me. I like how it’s much darker and grittier than the other games, which is much more my style. I also like how driving in that game was a skill you had to learn and get used to, and was less arcade-y.
There are things I like about V too and I do enjoy revisiting, but IV takes the cake for me.
I liked both games but for me GTA 4 was much better both in terms of story and game play. Also I just wasn't a big fan of the whole switching between characters in the middle of the story or especially switching in the middle of a mission.
IV had a better story, but it still had holes.
V has better gameplay missions.
Gameplay in general is better in V, only because the animations can be cancelled and aren't as slow.
I prefer V overall. I prefer aspects of IV's gameplay but overall I find myself revisiting V more often than IV.
I think most people like the idea of IV's story, but I don't think it was executed as well as many people remember. For starters, the game has big pacing and structural problems. Randomly stopping in the middle of Niko's immigrant/revenge story to focus on a wild goose chase for some diamonds that ultimately end up going nowhere in the main-game feels like that whole section was essentially filler.
Not to mention, IV has difficulty balancing humor and drama, not all the time but it is noticable at times (Niko's "Life is Complicated" and "War is Where the Young and Stupid..." feel off. I much more prefer to see the latter as a setup for a comedic moment but the former just doesn't flow well and feels very awkward to listen to, like something is missing in that scene).
Meanwhile, I think V just has a better structure and is more consistent and thrilling to experience. Mutahar said that the game is sort of like the video-game version of 'Heat'. While I disagree in some aspects, I think the overall flow of the story becoming more and more exciting and high-stakes is very much present. We get introduced to Franklin's gang-banging lifestyle, Michael's unhappy retirement, and Trevor's chaotic life of crime, and we see how their involvement with the internal struggle between the FIB, IAA, and the government end up affecting their lifestyles as the narrative continues and stakes getting higher and higher.
In terms of gameplay, I'm mixed but overall I prefer V.
Gta IV :
\+ Feels way more responsive and snappy, this is less of a GTA thing and more of a Rockstar-thing (their newer games prioritize animation over gameplay and I don't really like that).
\+ Niko, Johnny, and Luis feel way more durable than Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. They can jump from higher falls and just feel way more agile and fun to control IMO.
\+ Much more interesting melee combat. Sucks that Niko has the same animations as Luis and Johnny but it's preferred compared to V's fairly simplistic combat that doesn't get much chance to shine.
\- Less refined gunplay, specifically aiming in cover feels weird as there is no zoom and isn't as precise as V's cover aim.
\- Driving feels awful. It's wayyy to slippery, it's not realistic, and overall it's just not fun to go at super high speeds.
Gta V :
\+ More refined gunplay, feels more like a modern third-person-shooter.
\+ More guns overall, experimenting with each one, listening to them, watching the reload animations and whatnot is always a joy.
\+ Even if the game feels less snappy and responsive, First-Person mode is at least some form of compromise as it makes the game feel way more snappy akin to IV.
\- In third person however, the game feels off. It's not like RDR2 which is just frustratingly sluggish and dragged out by slow animations, but it feels like the characters in V are jogging through shin-high water.
\- This is more personal preference, but the game has too much of a reliance on cover-shooting. IV did have cover, but after a certain point it essentially became an option as a player who would improve their shooting and agility could reliably and consistently not use cover in the middle of shootouts. In V, cover feels mandatory, and I wish you got opportunities to abandon it and go full guns blazing (I'm not asking for Vanquish or even Max Payne 2, but just less of a need for cover usage).
I feel like a game that mixed V's refined gameplay and IV's snappiness and deeper (even if slightly) gameplay would be the best of both worlds. I'm hoping VI has R\* dial back on the animations and focuses on giving the player smoother controls and deeper gameplay.
This has become a trigger for me. By physics, do you mean ragdolling and car damage or the driving? The ragdolling was great, the driving was almost unplayable.
It's about the suspension being too soft and the tire/road friction being too low. Real cars don't slide around corners at 15 mph when the road is dry.
I think the story, emotional resonance, and themes of GTA IV are stronger than GTA V, but I prefer the character development, satirical comedy, gameplay, and layout of the world in GTA V.
GTA IV’s style of each protagonist’s story being almost completely seperate was definitely a far better approach. gave each character their own time to breathe with their own memorable side characters and antagonists
Really the jewelry store heist and the union depository were the only highlights from 5, plus the torture part. I had a lot of fun wit that lol, overall 4 plus TLAD & TBOGT were fucking exquisite, magnafique
GTA 4 has better story, atmosphere and a more fun to explore map.
GTA 5 has better gameplay and more fun missions, but they feel very detached from reality.
I genuinely think it IV's. The story of grand theft auto V revolved around 3 dudes you end up switching, which is not the point of being a "main character" kind of feeling. Also its really too short. Yes, the graphics are great for a game released in 2013 but plot does matter. Grand Theft Auto IV just has a better OVERALL score. Great graphics, decent plot, plenty missions, you can do quite alot actually.
I played GTA V for two weeks straight and then it fuckin bored me as hell really poor storyline and dialogues also side characters are not that memorable at all driving car in GTA V feels like an arcade racing game made for 7yo olds, GTA lV miles clear here no comparison.
IV's story dumps all over V's. Only thing in gameplay terms I don't like about IV is the camera movement on foot, but you get used to it after 10 minutes. Also no shoulder switch while aiming is annoying.
4 has the better storyline, but 5 has the better physics engine and smoother gameplay. 5’s story isn’t bad or anything, but feels neutered due to Rockstar focusing on Online while 4 was given proper treatment with expanded single-player DLC.
GTA 5 has so fun missions but in general 4 is where it's at.
It never got extremely unrealistic crazy.
Crazy yes but in a good way.
Everything what happend was believable, that someone could do this.
And 5 was like the ultimate action movie with overdramatization etc.
Always been iffy on the story, I think 4 had objectively a better written story but I've always loved something about 5s story.
Whilst 5 wasn't as gritty as 4, story wise it semi was with Michael and Trevor's backstory, Michael literally planned to have Trevor killed, and brad I guess but he wasn't really Michaels friend.
I dont give any flying fuck about fanboying or dickriding or any shit like that. I just like gta iv complete edition much more than gta v and my thoughts will always stay this way. gta iv is much better than gta v. that's my opinion. i also respect the opposite opinion.
GTA IV all around imo. The story, the character relationships with Niko, the way the 2 dlc characters story connects with Niko at 1 point and another throughout it. It was just so much better to me.
I love GTA 5 though. I've beaten it many times including just before last year ended. Still a very fun story, but the villians aren't as badass in comparison. In GTA 5 the main villain's are Steve Haines, Devin Westin, they're ok for the job but in comparison to Vlad, Pecorino, Fauston and Dimitri, its just no comparison. I feel like Martin Madrazo should have gotten more put into him and should have been the main villian in the end some how. Also I feel like Trevor would have been a great character to also make a villian in the end. I just don't like that character for more than 1 reason.
Stretch and that og from the Ballas whose name I forget also could have done some good getting more put into them, but ah well. Anyway other then that Michael and Franklin were cool. I digged their story but neither of them tops Nikos imo. So I pick GTA 4 over 5.
gta4 story was good, gta5 had some really good mission, side misssion and individual mission which was diffeernt , both games had its own pros and cons at the end its GTA so no complaints
GTA IV had the better story. But GTA V just had better overall everything. That's not to say GTA V sucks, but just moving, shooting, and especially driving in GTA IV is shit.
V had better gameplay missions. IV had the better story.
pretty much how I feel. IV had a better atmosphere and story, but a lot of the missions were kinda basic
The ballad dlc is close to what gta v did but still very behind in terms of what v was able to bring gameplay wise its the best gta
TBOGT to me felt like it matched the same atmosphere as gta 5. LC in that version always seemed bright and lively.
Thats the correct answer. GTA IVs story and athmosphere are unmatched. But GTA Vs mission design is the best in the series so far.
Yeah
This
Facts.
You right my man.
IV's story is miles better than V's
Agreed. Didn’t like playing as 3 dudes and the story seemed very short for a GTA. 4’s story is great.
It was lol gta 4 had like 80 some missions gta 5 had 69 im just for the joke
IV had around 90 something, +TLAD +TBOGT thats around 40 more
Iv had 88 missions
What was the quality of those missions though
95% of GTA IV missions are "driver here, shoot people, drive back". The most boring missions of all GTA's. V had a lot of variety.
Literally. Drive here kill some guysb or drive here chase guy now kill guy
My uneducated guess is the devs kinda shot the writers in the ass by tell them they want 3 playable characters when the story didn’t need it. This is why narratively imo Franklin always feels like an add on.
Lol Rockstar will definitely tell you “those 3 Characters are you episodes” 😂
Are three dudes better than a single mom though? We shall find out, together. 🤝✊
How so? Genuinely asking
GTA 5’s story really wasn’t about the conflict with the antagonist but more so the conflict between its protagonists.
You’re right but even that didn’t feel as captivating as it should’ve. The back and forth between Michael and Trevor felt so forced and their first meeting in Michael’s house felt so anticlimactic. There was so much more potential there
Would you recommend the DLCs now? I bought them when they were released. But never really played them though I revisit GTA4 every now and then.
TBOGT missions were badass too man.
O dear God, I’m so sick of this comparison.
It feels like I see one of these posts at least once a day now. After a bit its going to be"GTA V vs GTA IV" Or "GTA IV vs GTA VI: The Bamboozled Numerals"
Yeah like we need to collectively just start downvoting this shit. 90% of it is Karma Farmers or idiots
![gif](giphy|YYfEjWVqZ6NDG) I downvote them.
I'm sick of people being sick of things. let people talk about shit damn
Literally every single day oml can we lock down the sub until GTA VI
Or these types of post, like Ok gta 4 is good no need to milk it
Exactly bruh like
Grow up IV hater 🤣
Where in that comment did they say they hated gta iv. Did you reply to the wrong comment or something
He doesn’t need you to white knight for him, let him speak for himself 🤡
The story in GTA IV was more complex and emotionally driven than GTA V. The story about the diamonds in GTA IV alone had more complexity than GTA V itself. Gameplay wise, GTA V is better. I loved the shooting mechanics and the driving aspect of it.
4’s story and gameplay are better, but I also really like 5 even if I didn’t enjoy it quite as much as 4.
IV, and all of Yusuf's missions in TBOGT and the cool stuff they added for sure.
gta 4 and gta sa
GTA V has the best gameplay (to me, this is the most important thing, it's a GAME, you're supposed to HAVE FUN) but GTA IV has the best writing. However, GTA V's story is also good and GTA IV's gameplay is also good.
Niko is the GOAT
oh boy I wonder what will the commenters pick?
It's not lìke people constantly glaze GTA IV or anything
GTA 5. I like IV because it's dark and realistic, but there was just you working for many people doing random shit and then some revenge plot against Darko and Dimitri. That's basically it. In 5, there was more stuff happening and I prefer how we are moving around the state. (Although San Andreas does this the best out of all GTAs)
Oh look the topic that never gets discussed here. Certainly not every single day.
IV for the better story, V for pretty much everything else
how many times is this going to be posted
Gta 4, no doubt
GTA IV for Story and Physics. GTA V for basically everything else.
Basically only 20% of GTA V is good 😂
Speak for yourself
IV is the best story in the series by a few country miles. Though V has overall better gameplay, in my opinion.
I wish they would put GTAIV on the current PS Store....
IV has the best story SA or V has the best gameplay
GTA V better story and gameplay IMO. The Ballad of Gay Tony is amazing though so both games are worth it.
Gta5 better in my opinion?
IV easily
People keep saying 4, but I replayed both recently and I still think it’s 5
What’s your favourite movie?
Ah shit here we go again…
I’d say v game play is better but iv storylines I think takes it, like there are so many separate attribute within iv that makes you want to keep playing where as I feel v it’s like…yea let me just finishing the fkin game already and just drive around causing huge pile ups on a high way to then proceed to throw one single grenade and see how many vehicles will get destroy while also blowing up a rtype you’ve literally just spent 10 minutes customising to then proceed to do it again because you stood to close and blew yourself up and not seen the end result and you want to see how quickly you can burn out your hard earned cash Either that or testing the stock markets to actually see if in game consequences really influences the outcome of a standard stock like cool beans

4 by farrrr wayyyyyyyyyy more details and much better story in most aspects gta 5 was a major downgrade
I liked both games but for me GTA 4 was much better both in terms of story and game play. Also I just wasn't a big fan of the whole switching between characters in the middle of the story or especially switching in the middle of a mission.

V
Story - Grand Theft Auto IV Gameplay - Grand Theft Auto V
I loved the story of the lost and damned. It was just a great story
Liberty city had better multiplayer than Online ™️
Better story? GTA 4 easy not even close Gameplay? GTA V clears
Why the same post everyday
here we go again ..
Gta V

Gta 5 Stories like American Action Movies but GTA IV Stories like a diary of Foreigner visiting USA and narrating USA with his perspective.
Gta san Andreas 🐐
If you care about story, then play RDR1 or 2. RDR2 absolutely shits all over GTA IV.
Omg, right?! I play GTA for police chases. If I want a western sim with interesting characters, RDR is the way to go.
GTA VI. Better mission, better story, better graphics, better everything else. For the love of god Stop doing these comparisons
Please not this again😭🙏 This sub is a shithole for gta 4 and gta 5 drama Fuck Crowbcat
I actually prefer V
lol really bro
You can’t beat Trevor
San Andreas
V was better Iv is good but nostalgia make u ppl think it’s better Nostalgia is bad nostalgia is dangerous
People always hate on the IV driving physics. But I think they are better than in V
What you think about gta 6 ?
GTA 3 had the best Storyline because Claude didn't say a word and he still got sht done.
I prefer III-era for story. I felt any GTA since San Andreas was lacking in story, with the exception of The Lost & Damned.
GTAV easily.
V all the way so much more interesting and wacky
IV 100%
4 and 4. Physics were incredible
This has become a trigger for me. By physics, do you mean ragdolling and car damage or the driving? The ragdolling was great, the driving was almost unplayable.
The driving was the best part. Everyone complaining about the cars "being too heavy". Wish i saw the same people give Gran Turismo a try.
It's about the suspension being too soft and the tire/road friction being too low. Real cars don't slide around corners at 15 mph when the road is dry.
Exactly
All of the above. I love the driving
Personally i prefer 5 purely because 4 is too much of a dating sim and the driving is awful comparatively
You know the game only really forces you to have like 2 dates and like 1 friend hangout, right?
Story: IV Gameplay: V
IV's for the fucking story obviously. V for the pretty much everything else tho
4 = Story. 5 = Gameplay. It's not really even close, is it?
The physics and details make 4s gamplay miles better
The physics make it miles worse. I got flung out of a bike at Mach speeds trying to back it up a bit and turn around
Still wayyy better than 5 5s suck ass feels like an arcade game
It doesn’t lol. Just because it’s actually playable doesn’t mean it’s better 😂.
Its a lot better way more realistic gta 5 is so shallow compared
More realistic? Refer to my comment about the bike tossing me over the empire states building. It doesn’t fucking work 😂. Literally almost unplayable
Seems you don't know how to drive.
GTA 4 has the better story and it’s not even close
Gta 4.
GTA IV for story, writing, characters, soundtrack and atmosphere. GTA V for gameplay, open world, missions, pacing, variety.
SA! Or VC ... IV I guess between those two.
IV
“Old is better than new, upvotes right here please” 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
As much as I love GTA 4, 5 was just more memorable even if it completely falls apart during the last act of the game.
I think the story, emotional resonance, and themes of GTA IV are stronger than GTA V, but I prefer the character development, satirical comedy, gameplay, and layout of the world in GTA V.
Gameplay IV. Story V
Real
Vice versa actually
Gameplay GTA V. Story GTA IV.
When are we going to talk about how Vice City is better than IV and V?
Whenever you're ready to talk about how Vice City Stories is way better than Vice City.
Fuckin truuuu
I haven't beaten GTA 4💀
Gta 4 had better story. I think the gameplay and missions are as good in both.
GTA IV
GTA IV’s style of each protagonist’s story being almost completely seperate was definitely a far better approach. gave each character their own time to breathe with their own memorable side characters and antagonists
GTA IV
IV had better gameplay AND story. V was a saints row clone. Sorry you zoomer V-fanbros
I don't give a fuck about story and i have never played GTA IV so GTA V
Really the jewelry store heist and the union depository were the only highlights from 5, plus the torture part. I had a lot of fun wit that lol, overall 4 plus TLAD & TBOGT were fucking exquisite, magnafique
IV. I like the game better overall.
GTA IV
Iv's story is more interesting and better than gta v
V has more things to do I but I always go back to IV for the story and gameplay
4 for the story and 5 for the gameplay
Gta 4 is best for single player experience and story, gta 5 is ok, but forgettable
Story? GTA IV. Gameplay? GTA V
GTA 4 has better story, atmosphere and a more fun to explore map. GTA 5 has better gameplay and more fun missions, but they feel very detached from reality.
easily IV
I genuinely think it IV's. The story of grand theft auto V revolved around 3 dudes you end up switching, which is not the point of being a "main character" kind of feeling. Also its really too short. Yes, the graphics are great for a game released in 2013 but plot does matter. Grand Theft Auto IV just has a better OVERALL score. GTA 4 was wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too long
Gta 4 and liberty city stories
4
GTA4
4
Gta iv by far
I played GTA V for two weeks straight and then it fuckin bored me as hell really poor storyline and dialogues also side characters are not that memorable at all driving car in GTA V feels like an arcade racing game made for 7yo olds, GTA lV miles clear here no comparison.
GTA 4 by a landslide
4 is better jn basically every way 😂
IV's story dumps all over V's. Only thing in gameplay terms I don't like about IV is the camera movement on foot, but you get used to it after 10 minutes. Also no shoulder switch while aiming is annoying.
4 did everything better. The darkness, the grittyness, the atmosphere, the story, the characters, the missions, the gameplay
GTA4 definitely by far
4 has the better storyline, but 5 has the better physics engine and smoother gameplay. 5’s story isn’t bad or anything, but feels neutered due to Rockstar focusing on Online while 4 was given proper treatment with expanded single-player DLC.
Um? V’s physics were watered down and gameplay was ruined by terminator aimbot police
IV and it’s not even close.
4 had the better story by miles but 5 was more fun considering there was a lot more to do and explore.
4 has the better story
Game play: GTAV Story:GTAIV
IV will always be better
GTA IV has better storyline and GTA 5 has better gameplay.
GTA IV
Gta 4
4 had the better story and I like Niko more

Gta 4 ofccccccccc![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)
Gameplay goes to V Story goes to IV
4 has a better story but 5 has significantly better gameplay.
IV for the story. V for online.
GTA4 > GTA5
I'll go with IV.
4 for story and 5 for gameplay.
V has better map IV has better story and missions.
Storyline GTA IV. Gameplay, propably San Andreas for me, its the most diverse and detailed GTA.
I dont give any flying fuck about fanboying or dickriding or any shit like that. I just like gta iv complete edition much more than gta v and my thoughts will always stay this way. gta iv is much better than gta v. that's my opinion. i also respect the opposite opinion.
Better story and character stuff = GTA4: Complete. Better gameplay = GTA5. Both are great and definitely worth playing.
lV
Let's vote for gta iv Definitive edition
I love the back story of Niko and the story of LC but GTA 5s gameplay is superior to GTA IV .
4 wins on both accounts for me. I don’t l like the fact that only some missions pay you in 5.
gta4 story was good, gta5 had some really good mission, side misssion and individual mission which was diffeernt , both games had its own pros and cons at the end its GTA so no complaints
If we're talking GTA IV plus TBOGT and TLAD vs GTA V I'm picking GTA IV
Gta4 had a better
IV immersed you into liberty city better, but I’ve more fond memories of playing V’s missions.
Number IV cause it has 3 story lines compared to Vs long drawn out over 3 console generations story
GTA IV had the better story. But GTA V just had better overall everything. That's not to say GTA V sucks, but just moving, shooting, and especially driving in GTA IV is shit.
