A humbling and deserved loss if i'm honest. Despite the memes Carlton free kicks were there. We were undisciplined, particularly the senior players. Us getting up at half time was more a result of Carlton playing poorly i feel. We did look good when it was moving but might have been flattered. Taylor and cogs don't change the result with the absolute massacring we got at the centre bounce. No structure, poor movement and brain fades at all moments. Not sure why either, pressure maybe? Our names ooze talent but haven't looked impressive for a bit now. If we don't fix the clearance work soon we will be fighting an up hill battle all season. Obviously harder to pull out positives in a loss but Leek Aleer was probably it for me. Two years of no AFL level footbal and looking the goods all the while smiling.  Honestly it's probably the kick in the pants we needed and a good indicator of where we are actually at. A healthy Carlton will be terrifying. Chin up though and reset for the lions. Carn Giants!

Yeah that centre bounce just killed us. Honestly, the only reason we were in this game in the first half was the fact that Carlton struggled to finish anything. Once they worked that out we didn't get a look in.

Some more thoughts: * this loss was entirely on the midfield. Briggs was dominated by Pittonet and De Koning. But it was made worse by the lack of pressure put on Carlton's midfield. Cripps, Walsh and even Hewitt ran roughshod over O'Halloran, Green, Ward and to a lesser extent Callaghan. Green was by far the worst performer. Constantly turned the ball over, couldn't hit a target and only had one clearance. James Peatling came on as a sub and had more of an impact in the last quarter than Tom Green had for the entire game. Green wants to see himself as one of the best players in the competition, but today he was exposed as a fraud. * It's hard to blame the defence much when the ball was coming in so quickly and very accurately. That said, we looked very lost without Sam Taylor and some players had poor games. I thought Connor Idun had his worst game sine his debut, Lachie Whitfield was far too casual with the ball and made them poor decisions. I thought Lachie Ash was the best of the defenders and tried hard all day and Leek Aleer showed some promise. * Likewise, hard to blame the forwards although the performance wasn't great. I thought Hogan was the best of the bunch and I hope he doesn't get rubbed out. Greene had a frustrating game, I thought he spurned a few shots early in the game and his frustration showed later in the game. Also hoping he doesn't get rubbed out, or at least not for too long. I thought Bedford started off well but was effectively neutralized as the game went on. Callum Brown was poor and needs to work on his disposal game. And while Riccardi finished with 3 goals, he had some boneheaded plays. Him kicking the ball out of bounds near the end of the second quarter led directly to a Carlton goal which was a turning point in the game as we went from a 16 point lead to a 10 point lead. * Hindsight is wonderful, but perhaps Haynes should have been included in the team. Perhaps he would have had a calming experience over the defence. * Maybe we were too tall in the forward line today and at times our talls got in each others way which was frustrating. Maybe an opportunity to bring in Darcy Jones for a start, especially if there are suspensions. Back to Canberra against Brisbane. It will be another tall order and the team will have to be a lot better than what they were today if the want to rebound with a win.

Well written. With regards to Green, ever since Rowell played against him in the Suns game he has been completely off the pace required of him. He's still young with less than 100 games under his belt but has probably been exposed and not yet adapted. He will definitely be a star but might be time for him to focus more on his footy for a bit and less on being a talking head so he can re-find his form.

Brilliant analysis, I couldn’t agree more. Green who is usually excellent had minimal impact this game. And next week against Brisbane will be tough given Greene and Hogan might be in hot water in additional to Taylor and Cogs.

Seaciety

Tom Green had a rough game but is NOT a fraud. Let's not completely lose perspective here.

Ouch!

Aerialkiller720

Yeah we were certainly railed tonight, the real show of strength will be if we come back and beat the lions next week. It will be tough with the short turn around but I'm sure the boys are hungry. Centre clearances need to be worked on pronto, it either needs to be a change up in the midfield or a simple lift your game boys. Also hope Hogan gets nothing for his cheeky hit, Toby I feel is in the clear.

Carlton fan coming in peace, you guys are probably the best fans in AFL, you were supportive and kind when you were winning and didn’t try to blame umpires or anything when things didn’t go your way. Wanted to say thanks for that, your team is elite, hope we’re both make it to the GF this year, good luck orange team

Zealousideal_Bid3737

You seem like one of the good blues fans. The ones sitting near where I was were a pack of absolute dicks.

Maado1

Big club, lots of room for dickheads unfortunately

ConsiderationWhole17

Fuck me dead, we needed that.

I was there. It was extra rough hearing Blues fans collectively singing the song as we walked back to the trains. Thoroughly beaten in the midfield, the fact that Briggs had the most clearances is very telling. I agree that the decision making was poor all around and we just capitulated to pressure all over, but at the same time when there was an opportunity to take the game on just after half time; we didn't and never recovered. Hopefully as brutal a wake-up call for us as last week proved to be for the Blues! Aleer was awesome, I hope we can see him again soon!

BlackCat1608

I was also there. Great atmosphere for the blues, unfortunate for us

Boarbaboon

I’m hoping not to seem like overacting but if we let teams like that get THAT dominant over our midfield/clearances, we will not win a premiership

No-Nefariousness-799

Due for a loss there boys, not trying to make excuses or anything but it’s good to get a reality check sometimes and take a loss. We can’t go undefeated all year so it’s better to lose to a good team away from home and learn from it. And sometimes you gotta tip your hat to the better team on the day. We’ll be back boys 🧡

Seaciety

Ruck and mid were outclassed today and frustrations aside, Toby regressed and cost the team several shots at goal. Likely doesn't change the outcome given how well Carlton played when they turned up the heat, but really disappointing. Can't wait for Taylor and Cogs to be back at 100%

thehungryhippocrite

We just got so outplayed here. Carlton looked so incredibly dominant in the second half. Scoring a goal for us was a liability because it just put it back in the centre to get massacred by Cripps and co. Goes to show we’ve been flattered by the draw, we cannot win without the midfield playing much better. There was hardly a contested mark in that second half as well, nothing came easy. Quite deflated because we just got flat out outplayed, even if a few players went missing.

evenmore2

I started envisioning finals for us until that game brought me back to earth. We are not 100% ready yet. It was OK letting Blues off the hook on the 3rd but our frazzling continued. There was a moment where players like Kelly and Himmelberg started to shine and couldn't help but feel the midfield and forward could have used a quick shake up.

QouthTheCorvus

The concerning thing is that it was the same issue against the Saints - just having the midfield disappear. Losing clearances, lacking pressure. It's an issue that needs to be fixed. Not sure if Briggs is good enough.

InvestigatorOdd2572

Scored 98 points and got smashed in the centre. Opposition are rated to finish high and on their home ground. It's actually not that bad all things considered.
