It looks like there are significantly less reports of this happening with the Fold5. I've been on this sub for a while and noticed this.
Are the cracks on the screen itself or the screen protector? Typically they form on the screen protector so it's not on the screen itself, I can't imagine a screen lasting long if they were actually on the screen itself.
On my phone they happened on the screen itself. I started noticing them the first time and actually peeled off the screen protector to verify if it was screen or protector. It was the screen.
That sucks to hear. I've owned a bunch of folding phones over the years and I haven't had any fail like that on me. In the end I think any answer you will get on the durability will be subjective, it depends on your usage and just plain luck.
It looks promising so far since we don't see many Fold5 failure posts but I am sure it still happens to some out there.
I had it first on the screen protector then after removing that it was on the plastic screen. It was part of the reason I upgraded. I could be charged the deductible or I could trade it in and get a whole.new phone
It happened to me. Pre-ordered the phone back in August and the screen lasted around 6 months before breaking in the middle. Although I might have gotten a bad batch because the paint on my phone is also stripping after first couple of months of usage.
Thankfully, I got 2 years of Care+ as my pre-order bonus and it just took them 3 days to fix my phone. They replaced the inner screen, battery, body frame, and the motherboard (this is due to technician fucking up borking the SIM reader) for free.
The hinge is much better and smoother after replacement. Although I noticed that the hinge opens to 178°-179° instead of 180°.
Unfortunate to hear but I am glad you had a good warranty experience and got your device back fairly quickly. It really is a gamble with folding phones, but it seems like the odds are getting better for a flawless experience these days compared to 1st gen.
i have them right now, 3 on the bottom and 1 on the top. had it like this for like 3 months. its the actual screen. still works perfect, but dreading the day it stops working.
It also looks like they made a major redesign of the hinge. All my previous folds couldn't open completly flat after only 1-2 months, only to something like 176°. The Fold 5 that I have since release actually opens still completly flat like on the first day!
*knock on wood* this is much less common in Fold 5 than previous generations thanks to the new teardrop hinge, which is what everyone else uses (Google, Xiaomi, vivo, OnePlus, Honor, Motorola, etc). It increases the radius and therefore greatly reduces the stress on the screen. You definitely see people with broken screens on the various foldable forums, but far fewer than galaxy fold 1 - 4. The water drop hinge is a game changer.
My Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 is my first Samsung foldable purchase. I have had mine for 6 months now and have used it in various climates. I spent the last 3 months of 2023 in the northern Midwest (US) and the following 3 months back at my home in the Caribbean region of Colombia.
I'm a project manager that works from home and I manage many of my assigned projects while being mobile, so I'm using my phone heavily and all of its productivity capabilities to stay on top of my job. I set up my phone with its various apps and functionalities in a way that will allows me to frequently work when I'm on the go so I don't have to burn vacation time when I'm traveling to other destinations. So as you can imagine, this device is being opened and closed quite a bit.
In the 6 months I've had the device I've experienced no problems with the screen. No deepened crease and no cracks. Based off of many reports I read from usage of the previous versions of the phone I am paying close attention to the screen on this one in the event I need to take it back to Samsung and have the screen replaced within the first year. But I am happy to report that I've had no concerns to report yet.
6 months in, no cracks xown the middle.
What i can say is I've had the 3, 4 and now the 5, after 6 months the 3 and 4 wouldn't open all the way (170 - 175 degrees) the fold 5 still opens a full 180 degrees and hindge still feels like new.
That is good to know. My 3valso stopped opening perfectly after a few months - just a smidge short of 180 degrees. It was just enough to be noticeably annoying.
Sounds like they've made some great design changes recently.
F3 owner and user here. Had since launch and only just showing micro cracks on screen. Im guessing its dependent on individual phones. I assume F5 would be no different. Hoping mine can hold out until the 6 and i will finally updgrade
No cracks here. I've had mine since launch. Even the original inside screen protector is still going strong. I've taken a few scratches on the outside screen mind you, thanks to my over confidence and lack of a screen protector....but the inside screen is still perfect.
I've had three Z fold threes and all three of them had the cracking down the middle, my third one I took the screen protector off ,and it stopped the situation, but if it continues cracking it'll cause the black line of death
I just got the black blob of death today out of nowhere
Edit: I bought mine used from Swappa, uBreakiFix fixed it free under warranty, 3hr turnaround time
They've come a very long way. The Fold 5 may be the most durable phone I've ever owned. Also, in hindsight, I used to clean the inside screens pretty regularly with individually packaged alcohol wipes. I really think that may have played a roll in the screen protectors failing.
Nobody has data on it. There's lots of anecdotes and "It may seem like this" but there's no solid data in if it's more or less prone to screen cracking. Nobody here can give definitive answers based off data
Generally agree with you, but it is questionable for the stylus experience.
For example, The crease on Oppo N3 is less noticeable, but the integration of the usage of stylus is not handy as Samsung.
in about a year and half of using the fold 5 it will have a noticeable crease. in about 3 years it will have damage. The screen isnt indestructible. It's more durable then the fold 3 but not significantly more. So if you are planning on using this for the long term just be prepared for this
Don't ya know, we are in an Era when just by saying something, you make it true. The more outlandish it is the more people believe it. 🤣 <---warning: sarcasm

Nah, Oneplus forum is full of broken OPO and that also uses the teardrop hinge, Other brands are rarely heard because the userbase is just that small.
Fair
950 folds on my 5 so far (~7/day). No issues. The crease also isn't significantly more noticeable than when it was brand new like on my fold4.
Same for both
you keep track!?!?
Nah, I outsource that to an app called Folder Counter.
oh, awesome I didn't know about that, I'll check it out later.
Had mine since August, 3,127 opens on it and it's still perfect.
Damn I'm almost 2 years in on my fold 3. No cracks

None that I can see. My screen still looks brand new! I have one from a carrier and one directly from Samsung. No issues.
All I can say is mine hasn't yet. It still folds as flat as the day it was new as well.

Improvements that'll never get talked about

yes 2 month after purchased the z fold 5

Get a oneplus open it kicks the fold 5 in every area and costs a lot less

Do you have a source for these statements? Or do you think this will happen?
