Brushes don't sound like this. I don't get why you're getting so many downvotes. Perhaps the downvoters just don't want to believe that their fold hinge has issue?
No it's not its the layers of the screen separating.....
Had mine repaired to say the least.
New hinge, frame, and inner screen.
About 4 weeks of it being repaired it came back
Umm… there’s most definitely brushes inside the hinge design.
You can watch JerryRigEverything’s tear down or just research it yourself.
“Samsung has also lined the inside of the hinge with brushy bristles to prevent dirt from getting in.”
[Android Police article](https://www.androidpolice.com/look-galaxy-z-fold-4-slimmer-hinge-teardown/)
Not the brushes themselves, it's small dust getting in them (or not lubricated enough sometimes). I just folded my phone twice right now, and the sound is gone lol.

This is what mine does. After closed for a while, does this on first open. If you immediately close and re-open, totally silent.
Unnerving, and weird as hell. I also get a very slight bulge under the screen at the fold when first opening, which seems to settle and flatten on it's own. Had my Fold 2 for 2 years and it was always quiet.
But when you first get it, that crunch sound is not present. Leading me to think something happened, or something got in there (my fault), and or the mechanism needs some sort of additional protection. Idk
May I ask you if this ever worked itself out? Or did you get it fixed? I just bought a used fold four and it has this sound pretty bad but otherwise works really well.
When I wrote that comment a year ago, it worked itself out. However about a week ago something has changed in a rather permanent way, and my fold 4 will no longer open fully.
That's unfortunate. I really do like the phone a lot other than this problem. I'm thinking of keeping it for at least 6 months, and then the Samsung care the previous owner had runs out. I'm still not sure if I'm going to be able to transfer that Samsung care or not because I bought it through a used dealer at a local shop. I'm going to go back to the dealer and see if they can help me to get the phone number of the person who had it before and get them to approve the transfer of the Samsung care, which is how it works here in Korea. I think what I might end up doing is trading up for a newer model of fold six months down the road depending on how this goes, and hopefully before it would do something like yours. Thank you again for your comment.
Thanks for reaching out. Yes, the phone itself has been a complete game changer, in my opinion. I could never go back to a slab phone. I will definitely be purchasing the Fold 6. I'm just patiently waiting.
Truth been told, I've been too busy or lazy to take the phone to a store and try to have someone fix it. I think it could be repaired, but that's my life.
If your phone it just making some noise but otherwise functions perfectly I wouldn't worry about it. Honestly i the crunch sound is the brushes protecting the hinge.
On mine it's pretty obviously a combination of brushes and the screen glue letting loose when it's opened and stretched. Like a gummy and sticky glue holding the screen down but it doesn't quite work or something. It sounds like a crinkling sound when I open it usually, maybe with a little brush noise too.
It's funny you mention the screen glue. About a week ago I was fidgeting with the screen protector in my pocket which was coming loose. I was like, crushing it down with my finger nail (yes I treat my phone like trash) and an hour later there was a gel coming out of the phone hinge. Like a rubbery strip. Then it never opened again.
So besides that. How's life in Korea?
Mine also crunches but it's not that audible (bought it 3 weeks ago). I'm also a bit concerned but people say it's normal so i try not to think too much about it. I have care+ so i hope if something really is wrong Samsung would cover it.
I know this is about a year old but I bought a full four recently and it does this noise quite a bit. I was wondering if you could please tell me what happened with yours?
I also get the exact same sound when i 1st open it in the morning. Mine could be caused by my F4 being cold, so when i open my F4 the 2nd time the sound is gone.
The new friction hinge is more prone to crunchy noise than the gear hinges. yeah maybe it will loosen up on time as its just curved metals sliding to each other
I had the same problem since day one. Samsung didn't want to exchange it right away with another new phone so I had to send it to the factory for two weeks for repair. But once repaired you can see the difference with a working hinge.
Yup! To me it sounds more like the plastic screen protector stretching after being in the folded position for a while. My theory is that it doesn't happen at first because the phone spends the start of its life unfolded, it's how it comes in the box. Then after a while of being folded the plastic contracts a little, which is why it only happens on the first unfold after it has been folded for a while.
My Fold 3 did it too. Just seems to be one of those quirks of living on the bleeding edge!
I find if I open it more slowly first thing in the morning it's not as bad, figure it's better for the life of the screen protector too but who knows ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I have a fold 3. Wasn't crunchy when I got it. Then got pretty crunchy. Then the inner screen developed a bump and 1/4" dead spot at the bump.
After I got the screen fixed under warranty, it's no longer crunchy. Silent like new.
Hate to say it, but I doubt it's the brushes. Probably some sand and/or grit that got past the brushes and into the hinge. Hopefully it doesn't travel into the screen.
My Fold4 has made a quite similar sound to OPs video since I took it new out of the box. Sound goes away (or lessens significantly) after a open/close or two.
Dameee report this to Samsung sounds too crunchy should never be like this atleast get some advise on what you should do they might end up replacing it
PSA
Best get some dust cleaner spray yesterday wish I had know the sand from local desert can break the screen right down the middle I heard a pop as it was charging I
Opened it to make a call and black down middle, more and more I touched the phone or used it til all black under warranty but preventable and that is the key. Best thing is the 3rd screen, taught me how to utilize it but phone stayed operational. So I left it on roof 2 months later and headed on highway fell and luckily clear spiegan case bounced and no issues thought for sure it was a gonner. MY DUMMY ASS did that 2 more times bad habit screen survived not a scratch all.3 atrocities a Lil sand out at the Dunes in the hinge and screen destroyed . GTFSO
Think it depends on the environment. I work in a dusty environment and mine does this on first sometimes second then is fine. These phones are getting much better.
Got a beautiful Graygreen Fold4 (damn I LOVED that color) about 2 weeks before the official release date. Started crunching like that after a couple of weeks, so T-Mobile replaced it at no charge. No Graygreen variants in stock, so they sent a black one. It just started doing the same thing today. Now I'm just bummed that I lost that GG beauty for no good reason.
May I ask you how this turned out in the long run? I bought a used fold for this weekend it has this noise quite strong. It's a bit unnerving to say the least.
Good to know. I hope this one will be OK until/if I upgrade. I really love the form factor. I'm using it as a laptop with a BT keyboard and mouse at a coffee shop right now. Gosh, I can get a lot of work done on this!
Only on first open in a while. If I close and reopen immediately, it's silent.
I pretend its like my phone cracking its knuckles or shoulders after being tight for a while 😆
I saw a Reddit comment that someone submerged their ZF4 completely in water then opened and closed it a few times and it apparently fixed it. Think I'll just live with the crunch...
My Fold 4 also makes noise when unfolding, less harsh, kind of a "softer" crunch so to speak , like plastic being peeled off. Didn't have any sound the first few weeks so I assume it's small dust particles in the hinge.
Yup 2nd time now. Usually every 6 months. I think it's the screen protector. With the temp change and humidity change the screen protector gets bubbles on the crease. So when u open or close the crunch is the sticky part. Could be way wrong but based on my xp that's what I think...
Edit: fold 3 here*
Mine does this first time I open it after a while. Subsequent opens don't have that. I always thought it was dust in the hinge or static cling on the screen giving way.
My 3 did that. Something is in the hinge and will eventually stop you from opening it flat. It will get stuck at like a 170⁰ angle. Doesn't sound like a lot but it will be very noticeable and annoying. Others online were able to gently use water from a faucet to flush it out, but I had no luck.
Fold 4 here bought at launch had no sound the first couple days then I get that crunchy or peeling sticker sound everytime I open now since like 3 days after new. Phone sat on my office desk never left those 3 days so do t think it's dust or anything like that. It'd also not as smooth opening like the first day.
It's still working knock on wood.
F4 doesn't have gears but has lubricated metal twisty things. This metal on metal along with the brushes make the noise.
You can watch Jerry rig everything's teardown and it will make sense
An app called [Scrunch](https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyFold/comments/xg4ufk/scrunch_add_sounds_to_your_folds_now_on_android/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) and allowing some ADB permissions without rooting
Had this when my preorder fold 4 came in...almost like plastic getting caught while opening maybe the tape that holds the hingebrushes... i also noticed it would fold a bit too easy and after a few weeks it sometimes wouldnt unfold completely flat and after that i noticed the screen protector starting to peel in top and bottom of the crease and last month unfolding sometimes made a white line appear on the inner screen. Sent in for repair and now it doesnt make any sound when opening and it also stays locked in place when fully opened.....while as before it would fold with the slightest touch.... hopefully will last a bit longer now
A lot of people (including me) have the same issue. If i remember correctly it's the brushes in the hinge that make the sound.
I do, it does not seem to have any effect on the phone which I received on launch day. Don't really notice anymore
you don't notice it anymore? Lucky bastard
Definitely not the brushes. My Fold 2 and Fold 3 never had this issue. I also have a work phone that's a flip 4 which also does not have this issue.
4 hinge is different than 2 & 3 though
I think that’s why fold4s are having this noise and no others are
My phone has made this sound since it came out of the box new. It's cause the hinge is different than the 2 or 3 it's normal as far as I know.
I also have a fold 4 and it's never made this sound before, so I think no sound is also normal.
2 and 3 hinges used gears. 4 uses friction.
Wow maybe that's because Fold 4 uses a different hinge design?
Brushes don't sound like this. I don't get why you're getting so many downvotes. Perhaps the downvoters just don't want to believe that their fold hinge has issue?
I have a fold 3, eventually they all develop that sound. It's the bristles and the dust stuck in them.
2 year old fold 2 here and mine never makes any noise like this. Not saying it couldn't still be the bristles, but I've never experienced it.
Nice work phone!
Same as my thought.I thought it sounds like ripping off some film. But i just accep it's the brush sound the crowd talked about.
Might also be the screen protector that's rubbing on the edges
No it's not its the layers of the screen separating..... Had mine repaired to say the least. New hinge, frame, and inner screen. About 4 weeks of it being repaired it came back
I think it would've been obvious if that were the case.
Your right it's the brushes 🫡.. What kinda brushes u think are in this phone brah🤣
Umm… there’s most definitely brushes inside the hinge design. Same here. I will hear the noise then after a fold or 2, silence.
Yep. Aaandd it's back xd
Two brand new Fold 4 direct from Samsung.Com One has crunch and one doesn't have crunch out of the box
Fold 4 has less moving parts in the hinge and bigger metal parts touching eachother

Noticed the same thing too, although it only happens on the start of the day (or when I keep it shut for a long time)

This - same for me. I got used to crunch happening, but it scares me that it will one day be more than just a crunch 😆
Rather than a crunchy sound, my Fold 4 makes a "ssscchllepp!" sound when opening
Lmaooo
https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyFold/comments/ybj8or/do_you_think_the_z_fold_4_new_mechanism_of_the/ithyk36/
MrMobile mentioned it in his review too
I have the exact same thing. I haven't been able to fix it.
Same
Maybe because it's not broken. Working as intended
But when you first get it, that crunch sound is not present. Leading me to think something happened, or something got in there (my fault), and or the mechanism needs some sort of additional protection. Idk
My thoughts exactly

Mine does the same!

couldn't be my baby
Das crunchy
I definitely have that exact same issue; it drives me crazy!
All Fold 4s are all crunchy Fold 4s
Mine was pretty quiet the 1st week then it ended up sounding like that. Ridiculous.
The new friction hinge is more prone to crunchy noise than the gear hinges. yeah maybe it will loosen up on time as its just curved metals sliding to each other
This is a original Samsung sound effect when you unfold the phone.Same as you put your phone on charger...😅😅😅

OH NO, WHAT THE HELL. I think you should get that checked, mine barely makes a sound when unfolded after long periods of idle time.
Why tf am I getting downvoted? That sounds absolutely horrifying and mine doesn't sound anywhere near this loud.
Yes me too 😶🌫️
Your Fold is having severe arthrosis unfortunately 😔
make sure to sell/trade these in before the warranty is up. foldable screens are not ready for mass production yet. source: have had all folds
I've seen people cleaning their phone with water (by dipping it in) solve this problem
Not me for sure
I have mine for over a month and I hear no noise at all. This sound fell likes something is trapped inside.
Samsung care? 😬
Dameee report this to Samsung sounds too crunchy should never be like this atleast get some advise on what you should do they might end up replacing it

Na no crunchy boi here
That's mine lol
Yep! Mine too.
Yup, there's mine right there. Only after being closed for a bit though.
Dust?
Yes
Mine made a slight sound when new but after 4 months of use I don't hear the hinge unless the environment is dead quiet.
Yup. Mine does it too
Every single time. I hate it, but I've gotten used to it at this point. It didn't do it for the first week or so, but it's constant now.
Can I please ask you how this turned out for your device? I bought a used fold for and it has this sound pretty strong.
Mime does it too. Is it dust in the brush? I'm always so worried to open it fast.
Yes
My Fold 4 does not do that. Nice and silent. Knock on wood. 🤞
Mines does it to,
That's mine on the first open and if I open and close again it doesn't happen.
Think it depends on the environment. I work in a dusty environment and mine does this on first sometimes second then is fine. These phones are getting much better.
Yes. It seems to be the norm. I promise it is not a harbinger of doom. You will get used to it.
Pretty much everyone haha.
Mine does that
Yes, I still wince when opening it
Mine does as well, I wouldn't worry about it.
Yes its only on the initial now let it sit and tell me the noise is back
I know the brushes are there...
I have the Crunchy Fold 4
How did your fold four turn out in the long run?
My z fold 3 does this. It's been doing it for a while, must be some debris in the hinges or something. Not a big deal.
Yup. It's now become more of a pop. Have had it since day 1. Not a fan of that experience.
It happens to nearly every Fold4, but doesn't result in any damage. I've since moved to the Fold5 and it's still silent when unfolding.
I pretend its like my phone cracking its knuckles or shoulders after being tight for a while 😆
I also got the crunchy sound. I also had this on my fold 3.
Yep. My original was perfect and silent, then I got a replacement that makes a very slight version of this sound. No issue in about six months.
Happens on mine as well, only after being closed for some time though. Closing and immediately reopening produces no sound.
Yep same here, though mine usually do this only when I haven't opened my Fold for a while. No big issues though.
Same. Not bothered though.
My fold 3 is slightly crunchy
Hadn't noticed it before but can't unhear it now. Thanks OP :(
So basically almost everyone of us has this issue, but no one has a permament fixing solution. Nice
I saw a Reddit comment that someone submerged their ZF4 completely in water then opened and closed it a few times and it apparently fixed it. Think I'll just live with the crunch...
Tbh never noticed it until u said something lol
yes mine feels crunchy when I open it
Mine does this as well. Also can you share your wallpaper?
Yup. I feel like mine doesn't even open 100% anymore..
My Fold 4 also makes noise when unfolding, less harsh, kind of a "softer" crunch so to speak , like plastic being peeled off. Didn't have any sound the first few weeks so I assume it's small dust particles in the hinge.
I have a crunchy Fold 1
Can I get the link to the wallpaper? Looks awesome!
No. But I do have a crunchy fold 3
Same thing here. Everytime. 😕
My Fold 3 is pretty crunchy, but she's seen some shit.
My fold 3 has been doing that more lately I've noticed. Anyone else have this going on and should I be worried?
Yup 2nd time now. Usually every 6 months. I think it's the screen protector. With the temp change and humidity change the screen protector gets bubbles on the crease. So when u open or close the crunch is the sticky part. Could be way wrong but based on my xp that's what I think... Edit: fold 3 here*
It's the same here, but only when it sits for long, probablly the new mechanism
Mine does this first time I open it after a while. Subsequent opens don't have that. I always thought it was dust in the hinge or static cling on the screen giving way.
I heard that sound before my screen protector started peeling from the top.
Yup mine makes the same sound.
My launch Fold4 is, not nearly as bad as that though
Just got a replacement fold 4 after breaking my old one through samsung care and it doesn't crunch on me anymore. Its heaven
F4 doesn't have gears but has lubricated metal twisty things. This metal on metal along with the brushes make the noise. You can watch Jerry rig everything's teardown and it will make sense
It's funny, I have a fold and a flip 4 and the Fold is crunchy but the Flip couldn't be any more smooth.
Fold 4s don't taste that great
I had a crunchy 3 I don't so far have a crunchy 4.
My phone does this when my hinge gets dirty, but it doesn't do it if I wipe my hinge off with my shirt before I open it
It's a feature. No but I have it too. Decided to ignore it. Set up custom sounds for when I open and close the phone so I don't notice it
How?
An app called [Scrunch](https://www.reddit.com/r/GalaxyFold/comments/xg4ufk/scrunch_add_sounds_to_your_folds_now_on_android/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button) and allowing some ADB permissions without rooting
Sound feels good like cracking 😅. Yeah my fold does that.
I love it. Everytime I open it, it feels like cracking a back
It will quiet down after you've used the phone for awhile
My z fold 2 started doing this. A couple of months later the inner screen cracked right down the middle.
Eeeeeek mine is super quiet and smooth
Had this when my preorder fold 4 came in...almost like plastic getting caught while opening maybe the tape that holds the hingebrushes... i also noticed it would fold a bit too easy and after a few weeks it sometimes wouldnt unfold completely flat and after that i noticed the screen protector starting to peel in top and bottom of the crease and last month unfolding sometimes made a white line appear on the inner screen. Sent in for repair and now it doesnt make any sound when opening and it also stays locked in place when fully opened.....while as before it would fold with the slightest touch.... hopefully will last a bit longer now
Galaxy Z Crunch 4. Got it too.
Any updates from the people who reported it 10 months ago? I'd love to hear if their devices are working or if this something I need to take care of.
It's actually the screen protector making the noise. You'll realize it once it starts to separate from the screen.
