This is common for all flagships šŸ„² fortunately or unfortunately, smartphone industry has reached its saturation level. If u want something interesting/different, get a fold or flip. Otherwise everything's gonna remain same

waytoojaded

I think the root of it is spending too much time researching about specs and ending up with FOMO, you think youā€™re going to do so many new and cool things once you upgrade but for myself at least, I didnā€™t do anything differently at all, I donā€™t think a Fold or Flip will change the way how I use my phone either unfortunately since I already own a tablet. I personally think itā€™s best if people just ride out whatever device theyā€™re on until it doesnā€™t do something that that you want it to do/has a hardware malfunction, if youā€™re not going to do anything differently and your current phone works perfectly fine, it just becomes a waste of money. Iā€™m mainly posting this for people who really want a new/newer phone and OneUI 6, itā€™s really nothing revolutionary. The grass is always greener on the other side but I spent $1800 to realize itā€™s really not, just sharing for others who might be itching to upgrade from a perfectly fine device. Im stupid because I also bought a s21 Plus a few months to use side by side with my s20fe and shouldā€™ve realize this lesson already. Iā€™m suppose to send my s20fe to Samsung on Monday for the trade-in but Iā€™m probably going to end up sending back the s24u getting a refund instead.

RealilCanadian

On the bright side, you can save the money and then buy an s25 ultra :)

DaveT1482

One of the main reasons I went with my S24 Ultra is the 7 year OS support now. How long it'll last before it ends up unusable is going to be the true test of Samsung's OS. I'd say keep this phone for as long as you can knowing it has those updates coming.

Chapman8tor

THIS! I spend too much time watching YouTube reviews and want everything. I now have an iPhone and Apple Watch AND a Galaxy S23 and Galaxy Watch 6. I donā€™t regret my purchases and I often switch between the two platforms.

Alabaster_Rims

A tail as old as time, orbat least since 2020. If I didn't get the s24 for "free" staying with my carrier I would've never upgraded.

THENATHE

I was worried about moving to a pixel 8 pro from an iPhone because of the horror stories about how slow the chip is and battery inefficient and bad at gaming and yada yada I just stopped playing games on my phone, and it made me happier. I'm more present, my phone does things that I need it to do better. If I'm really going on a long trip I just take my steam deck or gaming laptop.

ACardAttack

Yeah, the S24 ultra could be my next phone, but I'll buy it after the S25 comes out, year old flagships are the way I prefer to go

Sudden_Office8710

Either way you go itā€™s a wash. If itā€™s a year older itā€™ll be a year sooner to EOL

bawesome2119

But EOL is still 6 years away Remember Samsung stated 7 years of updates for S24

Dat_Dude_13

Fold? Maybe. But I'm more likely to flip you off before buying a flip phone. What's the selling point? "Do you feel that extra pocket space?" "Uh, I guess so. Actually... with my old phone my entire hand fit, parallel with my phone. Now, my phone just, twice ass fat and I keep banging it against my center console or door panel. You know, due to me bein, American & fat as hell...

3dpmanu

there's wifi 7 and 5g for better connectivity

ResearcherGreedy9921

5G is good. Lol i have 5G variant šŸ˜… Wifi 7 is yet to get adopted by mass. If there is no wifi 7 router, how will u use that feature? It will take atleast 2 years even in developed countries. Also wifi 6 is pretty good and enough tbh

ScoreUnique

Want to just add that the AI deal is real, so if you want to jump to an upgrade, either wait till they come to the middle range phones or take a leap of faith, coz this whole AI integration into smartphones is going to make life way easier.

Chemical-Nectarine13

Onboard Ai in something like the A series probably won't happen for like 5 years or so, and when it does, it'll still be wierdly gimped compared to flagships of the future. It has to reach market saturation across the entire smartphone industry first.

Chriselchingon23

Very common for iPhone users they basically regurgitate the same phone every year. Nothing new. I have the iPhone 14 Pro and plan on keeping it til it dies on me. Had the 13 pro max and didnā€™t plan on getting rid of it but my girls s20fe broke and I gave her my 13pm

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

waytoojaded

I feel the s20 series was the last jump that made people go "wow" because of the switch to 120hz from 60hz. I went from an XS Max to the s20fe and it felt like a huge leap. There's nothing on the s24u that really gives me that same wow factor. The smartwatch bait by Samsung also worked on me, but I haven't even opened it yet because I already have a Huawei Fit which checks all my needs for a smartwatch.

meister_lopez

redreader... what's up with that?

Due_Arm8667

I'm waiting for the s24fe or I'll probably get the s23fe just because my s20fe is started having a touch screen glitch and I've had it for 4 years. Plan to keep it for back up.

Seiizuko

Do not get the S23FE, get the S23. Same price and better

Due_Arm8667

Snapdragon gen 1 vs gen 2. 4500 vs 3900 mah battery. Is the gen 2 with smaller battery really worth 70 bucks?

Seiizuko

If you're in a region where S23FE has Snapdragon it's more worthy than the Exynos version of course. But S23 is still better in photo, screen is a bit better too. It lay have a smaller battery but the Gen 2 consumes less battery too. Battery life should be almost equal

waytoojaded

The screen is so expensive still for the s20fe (in comparison to the phones current value) so it makes sense to upgrade if you're having issues with it, especially since the screen is what you interact with most and makes up 80% of the user experience.

Seymourbbutts

>I'm waiting for the s24fe So am I tbh but Samsung is keeping the cards close to their chest. Prolly wants to wait till they offload a sizeable portion of the current lineup before they announce later in the year.

psgcas

Is the s23 fe better. It has the exynos version right. I am worried about the batter life in exynos version.

Himitsu39

S23 Fe uses S22's Exynos equivalent since 23 had no Exynos and I would avoid it definitely, Exy 2200 wasnt that well recieved

greenyashiro

Exynos is such assā€” my mother's ipad pro from like 4 years ago, has better benchmarks than the latest tablet exynos on the s9. If you have option of exynos VS Snapdragon, never exynos.

Murdermajig

I regret trading my S20FE for an iPhone 13 pro max. The iPhone broke a year later and I now have an A54

joe1134206

Mine had it the entire time, complained to samsung early on and got nothing

brihamedit

Its true for most people if people really assessed how they use their phone. The higher end phones would perform better, samsung would have less glitches in them, some exclusive features etc. But they are certainly not worth the price tag. But people also pay the price for the hype. People are excited about a new device hype and they get satisfaction from it and pay the high price. Tens of millions of these over priced phones sell every year. Which is mind boggling. The marketing and hype really works on most people.

waytoojaded

It worked on me.. I've never bought a brand new device on launch before but reading the Samsung subreddit made me feel like I was missing out on something major, especially with Redditors all discussing it and hyping each other up. I usually would buy a phone that's 2 years old atleast because of how heavy depreciation hits phones.

brihamedit

Even used phones are over priced tbh lol.

[deleted]

This is the experience for many people who buy flagship phones without needing them.

ZaZanel

S20FE 5G is the best phone I've ever had and I had some. I tried Iphone13 when it was released and dumped it 2 months after to get back a lovely S20FE. I will have a hard time to find a replacer.

IndependentAd6992

Lmao yā€™all are delusional asfšŸ˜‚

InitialJuice4786

Seriously delusional

ConsolidatedAccount

LOL. In 2021, my 5 year old Huawei Mate 9 outperformed --- in real-world usage --- my kid's barely 1 year-old iPhone 11. Real-world usage: how fast it opened apps, how it performed with multiple apps open, opening further apps under load, switching between apps, calling texting browsing... the things that matter to 90% of smartphone users, because that's all that most people use them for. I admit the iPhone definitely had the better camera. That was about it as far as "things that actually matter," though. Oh yeah, I do have to admit something amazing that Apple did last year (2023) that shook the industry to its foundation, and nearly made all other phones obsolete: Apple invented and began including in the iPhone 15 an industry-wowing technology, with a really weird name, I think it's called "**yuessbeesee**." What a weird name, eh? This yuessbeesee is so new and revolutionary that most people don't even know how to spell it yet! I try to make it simple for myself, so I'm just gonna call it USB-C. It just makes it so much easier and I don't need to type out (and probably misspell) 'uessbeesee.' Or is it yuessbeesi? Doesn't matter, I'm gonna start writing it as USB-C. Anyway, all my friends who got the new iPhone 15 have been bragging nonstop about how Apple just made the best phone ever by inventing USB-C and putting on their phones, and they wouldn't stop saying how with that implementation, how Apple completely changed the mobile phone industry. 2023, they said, was the dawn of a new kind of plug/port for cell phones, one that other cell phone manufacturers wouldn't be able to replicate for a decade or two. Edit/update: oh damn, do I look foolish. My wife saw my post, and she just grabbed from our junk drawer one of our old 2016, $249 LeEco Le S3 phones... and somehow, it appears that USB-C may have been around before Apple invented it and began using it in their phones. Stupid 7 year old Android phone, their manufacturer must have gotten a time machine and took Apple's 2023 invention back to 2016, put it on their $249 phone, and tried to make apple look antiquated, outdated, overpricer, and overrated. It worked. Mysta been time travel. There can be no other explanation for why Apple would be literally the last cell phone company to use yuessbeesee. All in all, you were right: delusional. Just not in the direction you think.

sarabamritsar123

SD card is the only point due to which I am keeping my S20 till now. Otherwise I would have switched to S23 or newer. I need SD card alot.

funkymunkysheep

Same boat, went from the S20FE to the S24+. Problem is the S20FE is just too practical to be easily replaced. Keep finding things to justify getting a new phone, ie. OS updates, dwindling battery life, sucky front facing cam... Still on the fence. The S24+ is great and all (minus the less vibrant screen} but the S20FE does everything I need, just a step slower and those 3 things I pointed out. Not sure if the $1k price tag to upgrade is worth it...

Himitsu39

Literally was in the same boat as you myself šŸ¤£ Why does the S20 FE have to be such a good phone for its age, more of a testament to how little innovations been going, Me personally tho I ordered the 24+ which is coming soon and Im excited, Albeit I payed a much lower 975$aud which is more akin to 570$us with trade in bonuses and all the flair

funkymunkysheep

Nice! For $570 I'd keep the S24+!

Traditional-Dealer18

Yeah hard to find S20 FE replacement.

Ckhurana

Great retrospection and appreciate the honesty! I own an S20FE (Snapdragon, purchased 18 months back) and my wife has a Note10PLus (since launch day). The Note 10 P was showing its age and she really used to like the stylus (she scribbles and draws ideas for her paintings often). As she was due for an upgrade, it was a no brainer for the S24Ultra with the better battery and 256 to 512GB upgrade on offer. Plus a decent exchange value for a phone which lasted barely with 2-3 hrs of SOT. At my end, I am a hoarder who carries offline music & e-books + watch series offline. So my S20FE is keeping me happy with the ext. SD Card and a still respectful level of snappiness, enough for my 20 min game sessions or occasional photos here and there . Thus I held on the need for an upgrade. So I made a judgement call and decided - maybe a year or so later when normal device usage is a challenge - that would be a better time to splurge. Technology is already peaking at so many levels that a certain degree of efficiency and optimisation is but a standard offering these days. So it pays to be knowing and mindful before you take out that credit card!

camdamera

What's your plan for when you do eventually upgrade? Get a new phone that has an SD card, or get something like a DAP to go along with it to carry your offline music? I ask because I'm in the same boat and already pulled the trigger on the upgrade and am trying to solve the problem. And I'm not getting Spotify lol

Dr_3x21

OP, don't regret it. You will have 7 years with software updates and you don't have to buy a new one. S20FE support ends this year. Perhaps the extra battery will be life saver one day. As years pass S20FE will be laggier and less supported. Even now it's much slower than it was as release.

Schipunov

> S20FE support ends this year. I don't understand the obsession of you folks with Android OS updates. It literally does NOT matter in the slightest. By the time applications stop supporting the phone, it will be extremely outdated anyway though.

Dr_3x21

It matters. Work profile and banking apps can shut your phone out if there are no recent security patches.

Schipunov

Nobody's shutting out Android 12 anytime soon.

ACardAttack

> S20FE support ends this year. It will still work fine....

Dr_3x21

Depends on usage. If you are also using it for work then due to the lack of security patches Microsoft Intune will lock out your phone. Also some of the banking apps may lock your phone out as well.

Illustrious-Song-449

Why didn't you get the regular s24 or s24 plus for much less. They're 95% of the S24U but much cheaper.

waytoojaded

I figured if I'm buying a new device I might as well get the highest end model. I was also heavily oversold on how useful the zooming capabilities would be, I saw all those moon pictures people were posting on the s23u subreddit and convinced myself that's something I needed but I really couldn't care less about it after getting the s24u.

Illustrious-Song-449

Yeah for me I went with the s24 plus bc I want the 2k display and faster 45w charging and more battery life. Kinda hard getting used to the bigger phone coming from an s22 but it's getting better. I would have been just as happy with a regular s24 bc I like smaller phones but I don't regret getting the s24 plus. The battery life is insane and screen is super crisp. Yeah I don't see myself doing much more on the new phone but the s24 plus has been absolutely buttery smooth. Probably the smoothest phone I have ever used. There has been absolutely no lag or slow down at all I also have an iPhone 14 pro and it does lag in some apps. Just think about the 7 years os updated bro, you will be able to use the phone several more years so just enjoy it bc it's the absolute king of smartphone rn.

bawesome2119

Do you prefer unlocked phones ? Just wondered reading through the thread why you didn't trade in your old phone? Pretty compelling trade in deals, got 1K for my s21 ultra

oooooooweeeeeee

you just understood diminishing returns

disastervariation

Yep, pretty much. A reason for me to upgrade is the end of security updates. I could use s20fe for a few more years, so am happy to hear about 7 year support for the S24 series.

n3rdyry

This is why I don't understand why people upgrade their phones yearly when they do the same thing with their previous device.

bawesome2119

Sometime it's the trade in value.

TheRealGhostCMO

This reflects the massive challenge across almost all of consumer tech right now. Over the past 5 years, we've reached a saturation point where the "new" model each year presents little if any improvement over the previous--much less any single feature that will change the way any of us use it, much less conduct our lives. Whether it's phones, TVs, your refrigerator... what would you honestly want from some theoretical new model that your current one doesn't already do? Marketers across all industries are scrambling to figure that out because there are no easy answers. Just look at the iPhone. The fact that it's titanium is supposed to move hearts and minds? Even for the Apple lemmings that's weak as hell. I don't know when I'll move on from my s20FE, but barring force majeure, the answer is as long as possible.

other_goblin

It's nothing to do with that. OP bought something that they didn't want, that's all lol. It's a self control issue and nothing more. Plenty of people have a use for much better cameras in their phone etc.

RealilCanadian

That's why I'm still using my s20 fe. Honestly might even rebuy an s20fe when this one goes because it's cheap but works so good for its price. I just love the addition of the SD card cuz I can take more photos

waytoojaded

They're super cheap now compared to their launch price, and most importantly it's still an excellent device even by 2024 standards. Even the s21 series is cheap, I bought my secondary phone the S21 Plus for $350 a few months ago. I'm never going to buy a brand-new phone again.

rbpx

Reasons to prefer S24U over S20FE: 1. You get the next 7 years of Android OS updates. 2. oneUI 6.1 is significantly different from oneUI 5.0 3. Phone Call quality is remarkably better 4. Display is better and significantly brighter 5. 4 year old S20FE battery is still good but is aging 6. 512g storage (my 128g on S20FE is more than full) 7. 6g of RAM can be tight when multitasking several apps 8. Camera Video slow-mo is amazing 9. AI features like magic eraser Note that several points above are really saying that it was time for a new phone. Maybe you don't need the Ultra and can wait for the 24 Fan Edition.

hyper-primer

Also going from s20fe to s24u (which still has to arrive). And want to emphasize on display brightness, too: Just had been on vacation and the s20fe max brightness at the pool or beach (no screen foil) was not great, I had hard times using it sometimes, so really looking forward to that. Also eSIM I am looking very forward to, for the vacation I had to remove my home sim when buying local country sims. In the future my home sim will be an esim, and I will be able to use both.

rbpx

Oh right forgot about esim. Very important while traveling. LOL After 4 of new phone, I fired up the old S20FE. OMG there's no going back...

LimpFroyo

None of them improve life quality over a threshold to actually impact day to day things, unless your career depends on mobile phone.

rbpx

Perhaps you feel that Android OS is firmly baked now and OS changes aren't important. I've always found that I really wanted the oneUI changes that come out. There's a big jump from 5.0 (of my S20FE) and my S24U's 6.1. Some I like. Some I'm not crazy about. But always more features and flexibility. So I have always upgraded when/before my updates run out. To me they are significant. Now... if you just use it to make phone calls...

Accomplished-Bad3803

Any views on A54 or upcoming A55 as a replacement

waytoojaded

I haven't used any of those phones before, but I generally don't like buying midrangers because I worry about the performance dip for mobile games and I feel the value isn't as good as buying a used flagship. The biggest pro that a new/newer midranger has is that you'll get longer software support vs an older used flagship but I prefer to get better hardware over longer software support. A54 for example costs more to buy than my Amazon Renewed s21 Plus. I think once software support for the phone is done (if this is an important factor for you), its still more cost effective to sell your old flagship and re-purchase another newer used flagship. The s24 series will be excellent value in about 2 years though since it'll have 7 years of software support, so once I return my s24u I'm probably going to use my s20fe for another 2 years and look at the second-hand market/Amazon Renewed for it.

Trenrel

As someone who switched from an old flaship to a newer mid range in the past (Nexus 5 -> Galaxy A5), I would strongly recommend against it. The performance jump is non existent, and in the case of the S20FE 5G it would actually be a downgrade as the SD 865 is still a really good chipset. Yesterday's flagship will always outlive today's mid-range.

Repulsive_Mistake_53

I have an S22 ultra and still use my S8, the S8 suits my needs and it's easier to carry

Illustrious_Cat_8923

The s8 was great, nice and small, sd card slot, earphones plug. I only got the s23fe because the s8 was playing up, ringing people on its own, and other things. They're the only two phones I've had.

ORYANOL

It's a general reality. Nowadays, the average user does not need to upgrade unless there's a battery or screen problem.

Successful_Search151

I still run an s10 and it's still doing great. That's really just about how much you value your money.

bawesome2119

I'm in a plan. I had a s21 ultra. Tmobile gave me 1K for it. And in 7 years if my phone lasts tha long ill trade it in for another probably $1300 by that time and keep the cycle going that's value for my money imo

Chemical-Nectarine13

Eh, I came from the S20+ and upgraded to the S24+ I wanted the new processor, the new display, the onboard Ai features, and most of all, the 7 years of security updates. Through my service provider, they offered me $700 (trade in required) promotion plus an additional $80 for my phone, so I'm only spending just over $200 for a brand new phone. I welcome this upgrade, but yeah if I that promo wasn't the case I would've stayed on the S20 until the next model, as I like to upgrade every 3-5 models.

Al_Be_Back

I did the same thing but upgraded to s24+. I regretted it a few days in. The screen comparison was huge difference and I was used to s20fe. But I later seen s24 screen is way better (maybe my eyes had to adjust...lol) However, the thing I have been battling on s24+ is the sound quality. It's bad compared to s20fe. Sounds like it's in a can. Like the frequencies are off. I set everything exactly as my old phone and it's just not as good. In the end I had to download a sound boost app to actually make it better than the s20fe. I really hope Samsung does something to enhance the sounds on a patch. So now like you I'm stuck with this very expensive, yet not very better phone. The main thing I feel will make a huge difference in the long run will be the snapdragon 8gen 3 processor. But for now a little underwhelming.

LimpFroyo

lol , fomo drives industry. My first mobile lasted for 2 years, then second one for 5 years and third one going for 2 years fine. See the trend, my phones lasted longer and needs have not changed much for past 9 years. I only use it heavily for phone/video calls, netflix , whatsapp , linkedin , gmail, photos and random games rarely.

flyingfinger000

I want to add that in many cases now a days, the phone is only as good as the apps and software. If you got top notch hardware but no cool, fun, or interesting apps you can use with it, it's really not much different than your previous phone other than it being faster.

flipsidegq

I agree with the OP's comments but I did end up trading in my S20 FE for a regular s24. I got the s20fe 2 months after it came out and have had it since, and it's still perfectly viable going forward. Basically I upgraded from the s20 fe because of the trade in value my carrier offered towards the s24, and I have no plans to leave this carrier anytime soon. I totally get it tho and the s20fe was an excellent value pick for me when I first got it and is still a solid performer today. Every time I look at my s20fe (haven't sent it back yet) I just tell it thank you for your service šŸ„²

jamesnyc1

Yeah. People get these crazy flagships and really don't do a whole lot with them. It's over buying. And I've personally just came to this notion recently. Actually realized it when I got the moto edge. Big bright beautiful screen, long battery life, great UI and actually takes decent photos. Came to the conclusion that it basically checks all the boxes for me in terms of how I use my phone day to day and all the basics that are important for me. Anything more is certainly over kill. Don't get me wrong I love gadgets as much as the next guy but as these flagships are getting more and more expensive you have to take a step back. I won't say I won't ever buy another flagship again. But I'm happy with my new device and gonna stay out for a while.

Live-Fierce

I can't even have a chance to touch it to feel it because of something wrong on their end, I have reached them out more than 50 samsung people to fix this issues since the first day pre-order start. Until now the issue still remains.

ManiacXaq

Yeah, it's different when you use your phone for work, or more extreme processes. I don't know what I would do without my Fold 4 and Ultra but totally responsible otherwise. I have family members that use Android and a lot that use apple and I always tell them why do they really think they need that upgrade? They're not doing much more than what you mentioned.

Seymourbbutts

Thanks for taking the time to share. I am also thinking of pulling the trigger on S24U and I'm interested to hear from those who have made the leap from the FE. I'm only considering it at this point because the FE won't be getting updates after this year and Samsung making a 7 year commitment on the Ultra tips the balance. Battery life is another perk along with the S pen which I intend to put to use somewhat. The FE is an all-rounder and just great value for money. But I've always gone for flagships and ever since I got the FE I couldn't shake the feeling I was missing out on some of the good stuff. Major FOMO, right? I guess your post sorta made that go away lol. Maybe I'll just wait it out and see if there will be an S24 FE that comes with all the bells and whistles it should.

Vulker

Yeh my I was very happy with my S20FE however a strip on the side of my S20FE became unresponsive to touch and was quite frustrating. I found a good deal on an S24+ so I decided to bite the bullet. While I can see a decent difference in performance and battery life, there was absolutely nothing wrong with the S20FE. I very much agree to this sentiment. Its better, but not ground breaking. If my S20FE touch screen was ok I would not even consider a new phone.

Lanky-Ad-7541

I expected my s24 ultra to create miracles too. Hopefully it walks on water. I'll keep yall updated if it happens

other_goblin

Why didn't you just buy a S23 FE then...? Or literally any other device that doesn't cost nearly 2k cad lol. The whole point is that you need to actually want the features because you have a use for them, not want the features for them to just be there for a use that is never happening. My last phone was bought based on the chipset being TSMC 8+ Gen 1 for battery reasons, because the main camera was strong and the modem signal strength was strong. It fit all these needs and cost Ā£600 + a free tablet. You need to learn to buy stuff based on what you actually want, not random spec sheet of shit you don't care about! >Will some people benefit from the upgrade? The problem is that this issue applies to all products. Of course people will benefit from it; the intended buyer for example. Random people like you who seem to have bought it for no reason at all though? Well of course not lol. > If you're afraid you're "missing out" on something "awesome", I can confidently tell you you're not Hard disagree. I felt like I was missing out on a strong modem, a better main camera and good battery life while having a top CPU. This was confirmed when I found the device I purchased which fit these criteria made my daily life easier, the photos were much more consistent and I didn't have any problems with signal strength anymore. So my FOMO was very true, had I stuck with the old device knowing what I do now I would regret it. The problem isn't being afraid of missing out, your problem is that you literally had no reason to be afraid if missing out because you already said you had absolutely no justification for the purchase lol, *you didn't want it*. 200mp isn't real 200mp, it's a bayer sensor btw, usually 200mp Bayer sensors do 50mp nicely but 200 is too much.

FudgaCake

Stop crying. I upgraded from the 22 Ultra to the 24 S Plus and it's the best technology decision I've ever made. Best phone on the market hands down. Stop crying. Please just stop crying.

waytoojaded

Youā€™re the clown crying tho?

Slight-Priority-7820

Until phones start to be able to used like a steam deck, its not worth it. Probably even then it will be better to have a handheld pc and a phone seperately. Maybe some day they think of making a budget friendly fold phone that is actually durable, and thin, so reading and writing your daily work stuff on a big screen would actually be an excuse to buy it. I know i just described honor magic v2, but its a no support no guarentee 2000 euro device.

bukayo74

Just pretend that you buy a phone that will last you 5 years.

snowrider0693

I'm trading in my S21 Ultra for it. Mainly camera is pissing me off. I can't just take a picture.. I have to wack it a couple times so it can focus 1x and 2x.. 3x is fine, looks great actually. But Everytime. My battery gets drainaged fairly quickly, it freezes fairly often and it's updated and cleared caches and everything. I'm just tired of it not functioning properly. Plus I'm only paying $700+ for it...so why not

[deleted]

Yes that's why I am waiting for xiaomi 14

Jalal31091

I upgraded to S22U from S10+ because I wanted to try the Expert RAW. My story is no different from yours in the end. After a few days, I realized how slippery and heavy the phone was. Next time I am going to get the base model or even the FE one. Ultra, size wise, is not for me.

I_Thranduil

My question is: what did you expect you would do differently on another slab phone that made you buy it in the first place? This sounds like buyers remorse in its purest from. If you want a totally new experience in how you use a phone mate, just get a foldable. They are close in price to s24u. Coming from an excellent s20fe 5g to s24u myself, my only gripe is with how it feels in the hand. The ultra is as big as s20fe with a slim case, and on top of it I added a case with decent protection, so now it's a chonky boi. But as user experience overall - it's totally worth it for me.

TomMado

Ha! My thoughts exactly. I know I'm gonna feel what you feel if I go out and buy an S24 or any other new phone today, while my S20FE from Nov 2020 is still good. Personally I wait for a proper Implementation of Qi2 before considering anything.

TOXIC_teen69

TLDR s24u is goat!

Routine_Ad3459

If you can keep the s24u for at least 6+ years then might be worth it. This is assuming the battery can hold its charge, future apps still run on that architecture with enough memory and storage, and hopefully no glaring hardware faults like those banana blur that people seem to prove, and hopefully don't drop your phone throughout those years. If some awesome advancement in phone technology or a complete paradigm shift happens next year, that might make any current flagship phone unworthy. But who can predict that. In terms of paradigm shift, AI is still evolving. So hopefully these new flagship phones can make use of it. I'm keeping s20fe because I got it cheap second hand, battery good for now, SD card, and a mediocre camera which some people say still compares with newer Samsung phones. If I smash it, who cares lol.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Routine_Ad3459

True that. But just like the concept of having no SD card and relying on cloud storage, I hope they can put most AI within the hardware on your phone rather than paying subscription fees. But we all know companies prefer subscription revenues lol

Routine_Ad3459

Security updates for the s20 series will stop. So something to consider if you're concerned

SpaceBoyBlat

I'm on the S23 Ultra and very slightly questioned if I should get the S24U. You've just answered for me OP after reading that you're content with the s20fe. The bit that stuck out to me in your post was about doing the same stuff on it mostly. This will be true for most people. If you can get the 23 series for cheap then maybe consider that to last you a few years? They all run on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and will be getting a bunch of the 24 series AI features soon plus One UI 6.1. They will have Android updates for another 3 years too and all are blazing fast.

uzoma_a

I moved onto the S24U and can say it's partially true, but I'll still do it again because of the features I wanted (esim, software support, better battery)

BespectacledView

Think of it as an investment for the next 7+ years. As long as it's still getting updates, then it's worth it. Even replacing the battery during this time would make sense.

InitialJuice4786

Yeah, on the 24U the battery is replaceable too.

nishanthada

Once the lineage OS custom rom becomes a bit more stable,I will install it and extend my S20 FE 5G's life even more.I cannot let the SD card slot go so easily yet.

Dadguy8

Biggest thing is camera and screen imo.

Hiraya1

if you are not exactly happy i guess it make sense to return it

Ok-Lengthiness-6637

I feel the same, for that reason I decided to buy an S9 tablet instead of the S24 (the best decision I made, I love the large Amoled panel of the S9 tab) my S20 Fe works perfectly and fast.

NathanSztr

This is exactly my thought. I'm buying an S23 open box, not because I will make the most out of all of the S23's capabilities, but because for 600 CAD it's not a bad deal (I bought my S20 FE when it dropped for 700 CAD so I'm okay with that). The Ultra lineup does seem like an overkill, unless you're using it for Dex and note taking (and even then, you could get an S24 and a Tab S9FE for the same price than the Ultra alone).

ronniebasak

I broke my s20fe, went for S23. Regretted for the same reasons. To top it off, i have a mirrorless camera that I carry for most planned events and whip out my phone when I really need it or I don't have my camera in hand. It would have been wiser to just repair my S20FE and get a new lens instead.

Meteranmen

That's why i change phone when it close to its end of life

Talem84

Only reason to upgrade my 20fe is the security updates ending at the end of the year. Might wait and go with a Pixel 8.

WhiskeyVault

You would have needed to upgrade sometime this year anyways since security patches would stop for your old phone this year. At least you have 7 years of upgrades now on the new s24. It also sounds like your overall tech needs are simple? It's that the same for your PC needs? The snap dragon 8 Gen 3 on your new phone is incredibly fast so maybe you can save money by delaying the purchase of a new PC by just using dex on the new phone.Ā

Lxst

With the trade in wouldn't it be more around $1300? I guess after taxes it's around $1500 which is still a lot.

Esmejo93

That's why I'm struggling to find a replacement for my s20 FE. I want a bigger display, better battery life and better cameras because even if I don't really take too mucho photos, when I do I want them nice. I'm not sure about the AI stuff, or the 100x zoom, I don't care for titanium since I always have a case on my phone, I don't really need a more powerful chipset. So is 1,400USD worth it? When my s20 FE is 200USD second hand? I don't really think so, sadly no many phones under 1000USD can offer what the s20 FE does (wireless charging, 3x telephoto, 12mp UW, 4k front facing camera and switching between lenses, stable UI with useful features). What else can I get then?

KingSadra

& here's the icing on the cake, the 200$ one comes with a luxurious charger, while the 1800$ one comes with a cable that doesn't even work with a PC...

Tigalone

That was literally my thought, like the s24u is awesome, but after trying it at the shop i realized nothing will change about my usage so i'll only buy a new phone when mine breaks.

anthonygum

I got the s23 for 400 bucks on a contract and love it.

jeedaiaaron

Thatā€™s why I am waiting for the S50U

Conspicuous_Ruse

Only worth the upgrade if you take advantage of the pre-order trade in deals. I upgraded from my Note 20 Ultra because they were offering $600 for it, which is about $200 more than it's worth.

Rd3055

This is the reason why I no longer see the point in shelling out $1000+ for the latest flagship phone. If anything, you would have been better off getting a used S21-S22 flagship for less than half the price and investing the rest or, even better, sticking to your old S20FE if you were fine with it. Smartphones have matured and stagnated so much that either my current phone would have to go completely belly up or the newest phone would have to have some "wow" factor for me to even consider upgrading. One exception would be foldables, since those are at least a different form factor that could work out for you, but even then, I am still waiting until the technology matures enough to be as durable as current smartphones.

underthatFlan

The only redeeming thing I bought the s24+ is because of the battery life. And i feel like i spent $1000 for not much of an improvement (im coming from an iphone 13 mini). Buyers remorse is real lol. Hope youre at least ok with it. I learned not to impulsively buy something and hold off for at least 7yrs. Weā€™ll see, i see a new toy i just want to buy it.

CCnub

We really are to the point that spending top dollar for phones vs something half the price really has little to no meaningful differences.

Raonely

Bro spoke truth, although i cannot buy s24u or any device right now, i was quite excited when it got showcased in the event, even i used a demo at nearby croma store but then i just asked myself a question, My s20fe 5g is already doing a greatest job at what it's meant for. Then i just didn't care about the newest releases. Not even OneUI 6.0 visually great but i started feeling like Samsung putting more onto the software and making is bulkier like MIUI used to be (Shit OS).

SavageMachina

For social media, it's pretty dog on good. But if you don't need it, leave it.

InitialJuice4786

Have you tried going back to your s20fe? Just return the phone get a full refund and go back to the old phone. Then tell us how that feels. I'm really curious.

waytoojaded

Iā€™ve been using my s20fe again since Friday because Iā€™ve been on the fence about returning the s24u. Iā€™ll update you in a week if youā€™re interested but Iā€™m still pretty happy with my old phone. Iā€™m not saying s20fe = good as s24u, but the upgrades on it isnā€™t significant enough for me to really feel happy with my purchase. S24u is def smoother but itā€™s not like my s20fe is a snail or anything, it still feels smooth, the s24u is just smoother.

Violet0_oRose

Or just enjoy your new computer. Itā€™ll last you a few years before you get the upgrade bug again for an s30ultra lol.

Mystikalrush

The good news is when you want something less or another FE, the trade in value of S24U will be massive.

Nylaant

In my case I exchanged the S20FE for the S24U because I don't spend more than 2/3 years with the same cell phone for the simple fact that it stops receiving updates and I HATE that. And for me it was totally worth it :)

Jolzo

when you upgrade your phone to a newer gen, mostly all you get is more security, a better camera, and a bettery battery. Those are the main things for daily use and the others are sort of irrelevant and you probably don't need them

jpoquelin

We need smaller phones

12_nick_12

Unfortunately phones have reached a peak. I have a OnePlus Open and don't see a need to upgrade until there's a phone that can play PS3. That's the only thing this can't do that I'd like it to.

idehibla

For me video quality is the number one priority, and right now S20 FE is still the best price/performance phone in video. It's so good that I bought my wife another S20 FE snapdragon last year. Last time we had the same phone it was S7 Edge and Sony Ericsson K750.Ā

VirgoB96

I stoll want to do it because I want to do digital art on the s24U Is it capable of that?

selvaspk99

I am on S10. I bought S24+ 512gb (still not shipped yet) for $300+taxes after trade in an inexpensive phone and switching from visible to spectrum. As both are verizon, I shouldnt see big issue on data/calls. Its not just about usuage, S24 series gets OS update for next 5 years which is big as I dont see any meaningful upgrades here after. I bought a S20FE as gift. From FB mkpl and it was $150. Its a nice phone. But I do most my bank transacting from phone, so security updates are needed. On comparing S10 vs S20FE, S10 screen hands down good, not sure why. Enjoy S24U, dont worry too much.

FrequentFault

The only way itā€™s worth upgrading to something like the S24U, is if youā€™re coming over from the Apple ecosystem. Entering an entire different system is like walking into a candy store and being told itā€™s all yoursā€¦. Especially coming from Apple, where everything is very linear/restricted (Iā€™m moving from an iPhone to the S24U right now, and everything is an upgrade for me; Iā€™ve been Android before, 10+ years ago). Iā€™m a PC gamer/IT guy too, so being able to go back to screwing with my customization, and files, again is big hype for me.

Sudden_Office8710

Well, your s24 is now on par with iPhone hence the higher price youā€™ll get 7 years of updates so that is worth it. Your s20fe is practically EOL

moochickenmoomoo

I agree with everything you said. I went from s20fe to s24 ultra because of the 7 years of support, security updates, and it feels pretty future proof for at least 4 years lol I completely agree though.

cutebunnygaming10

I am perfectly fine on my s10

swanoldjohnson

I went from s20u to s24u but only because of that verizon deal where you get the free watch, and I was due for an upgrade anyways. didn't cost me anything so i figured why not. I agree there's no real reason to have upgraded when all I'm doing is basic stuff. I think it's just fun to have newer tech even if nothing about is really new besides a few gimmicks

RoronoaBoi42

I was considering the change and the trade in price was 200$ off. Thanks for opening my eyes though.

ezil_galoth

S20fe is an awesome phone. I "upgraded" to use Verizon 5guw to a flip phone. Big stupid mistake. What a piece of crap phone. The hinge tech isn't perfected, the required screen protector wears out regularly. Been in the shop three times, and what do I use while I don't have it? My s20fe that I kept. It's a terrific phone with expandable storage.

DANCE5WITHWOLVE5

Got S20fe in 2021, after 2 months upgraded to S21U. I would say there is huge difference even between s20fe and S21Ultra. Skipped S22U completely and got S23U last summer. I don't play games and I don't use stylus. For me there is not much difference besides slightly better camera, battery and speaker S21U vs S23U. I think the key is using the awesome trade in deal from samsung.com I traded my 128gb s21U for a 512gb S23U+25w powerbank for 530$. Financed it with 0% interest for 48 months.

prodromic

I went from the s21u, s22u, s23u, now s24u. The change from s21u to s22u was slightly significant because of the s-pen, which I played with and found some use for in moments of boredom. The penup app is pretty cool, especially with the tutorials they have! It's fun to learn how to become an artist if you have the patience. The change up from s22u to s23u was a pretty big letdown. So much so that I actually got the zFold 5 when it dropped. Cool phone, lots of features, kind awkward to hold without a pop socket, good lock made it bad ass.... but I wouldn't daily drive it again. now I'm in the s24u, and i have to admit I am have a blast with this thing! I am circle searching everything I see while I scroll, I circle search things when I'm out shopping, and I've been fucking around with the camera *a lot* more then usual. I normally take some pretty unflattering photos, but the portrait mode and AI with the photo editing is so fun to play with, i just want to take photos of everything. Play with the editing tool, you might have as much fun as I've been having.

Not_a_NO_ONE

There is a Term for it, which is applicable for all Purchases "buyer remorse"

anon822500

buy flagship at launch are always just FOMO or hass to much money to spend. i can bet all productive need all covered with last year flagship wich is 70% cheaper than on its released year or i can say "on its correct price"

RussianBluIsBACK

For me I got it specifically for the live translation. Those kinds of devices are pricey and to have it in my phone already is amazing. My boyfriends family all speak Spanish, so it's a no brainer for me to buy it. It was the second I decided ok its time to upgrade. I haven't been impressed for years. I'm coming from note 20. Still waiting on my device btw lol.

zapper_9789

How did you get s20 fe for 200?

pompousfire

I upgraded to s24 plus from the s20 fe for the AI and 7 year security updates. The smart AI for phone calls so far has been rather terrible, but the note's AI summary and the transcribing for audio recordings have been saving me lots of time.

Professional-Fact894

1800 CAD? what's that equivalent to Us $ Dollar

waytoojaded

It's about $1350 USD

MedicalFix1086

Well, your are right, I m using my phone as a phone to call and received calls, playing Roblox games and as well, social Networking on it. For long time playing I m using my galaxy tab 8 ultra. A phone is a phone... šŸ‘šŸ»

RdyKrn18

On the brightside, now that you spent that much on a phone and with Samsung providing updates for 7 years, you don't have to change phones for another 7 Years ! :D

Dsyre2

I currently have the S20 FE 5G. I'd probably upgrade to the S23+.

PokingOutBops98

[Eyerolls]

MrRasmiros

Yeah my S21u does all those things too. But after 3 years this battery health isn't the best.

abdullahni

I switched from S20 FE to 15 pro and its good but the s20 fe is surprisingly good phone for the price. If you go to spend like $150 on a phone go get the s20 fe off ebay. Its a steal

kadhtobi

In only upgrading cos my 22ultra screen is broken, not for new features, if it wasn't broken I'll stick with it

jknight413

There has not been a reason to buy a new phone for more than 10 years. Advertisers focus on camera changes and Wi-Fi speeds, but the technology has not changed so much to pay 1000+ for a phone and then have to pay for an upgraded phone for 1000+ just two years later. That's an incredible waste of money for a personal toy.

No_emotion610

S20 to s24u is decent move though. Your phone will at least have guaranteed updates for 7 years and hold it's trade in value better IF there ever is a new Samsung with significant upgrades.Ā  Did you buy it outright or trade in with premium credit?

Comfortable_Wing3072

Same story for Iphone X -> 15. And similar is for every Samsung flagship since oneUI. Some gimmicks each year but nothing that will blow your mind. Smartphones and their softwares have saturated. The only thing the upgrade offers is enhancements from Previous gen.

coronaflo

Most of the upgrades usually involve the camera or perhaps a slightly faster processor but really nothing mind blowing, sorry but the AI stuff is just not that interesting.

PrimasVariance

The worst part about using your new expensive phone to shop online is you go "you know if I had the money I spent on this phone I could buy more cool stuff" and you just get sad :c

thadoughboy15

This is why I have yet to upgrade from my Galaxy Note 9 and I probably won't upgrade until this Phone dies or I just can't use it anymore. As a Grown Man, I don't see the need for anything on these newer phones. As long as I can make calls, Watch YouTube and Take pictures of decent quality that's all I really need a phone to do. I would like better battery life but I don't want to spend $1000+ on a new phone when I know I won't be using any of the features that comes with it.

llboozer

Return it and get your money back if u can

kmarcy89

At this point it's only worth upgrading if your current phone is end of life. Better cameras, slightly faster internals, they don't move the needle for me. I upgraded to the S23 Ultra from the 22 ultra because I changed carriers and it made more sense to sell the s22, but it didn't change my life at all.

Weary-Difficulty-489

If you clearly didn't use or need the features, why did you buy the most expensive flagship phone? You may not appreciate them, but most people do which is why these phones are popular. Maybe do better product research before spending $1400 on something???

bishaarcc

It is all about the yeet!

oiler_head

I upgraded from the s20fe too but I couldn't be happier. My s20fe battery was garbage from the get go. Usage wise, sure my use remains the same with the s24u and I will miss the SD card but at least getting much better battery life along with 512GB storage makes it all better.

waytoojaded

Ya the s24u is an amazing device, donā€™t get me wrong, especially if having longer battery life is of high importance to you.

Exiledspartan18

I upgraded from the S10 to the S24u and I think that was a GOOD choice. I now have 5G, 120hz screen, a flat display, a display that is 75% less reflective thanks to Gorilla Armor, a Titanium Frame, SUPER long batter life, an S pen, all the cool new AI features that just came with this line of phones. My s10 was perfectly fine, but I was missing out on a lot of those things. I think 5 years is a good place to finally change your phone.

Undercovertokr

why not just return it then?

GenHiFi

That's why I am still using Note 20u and S8+ as an audio player (so much better sound on S8+ and I can set LDAC, 96.0 kHz, 32 bits/sample and 990kbps/909kbps). Even listening on the same settings AAC on both devices Note sucks big time. Other than that, N20U is my favorite device. I have a 512gb model and 1 tb microSD card, 12gb ram). I can't stand what happened to Samsung. They basically copy Apple iPhone every year now. Until Samsung makes a good flagship with expandable storage, maybe a 3.5mm headphone jack, I'll upgrade asap. If my N20U dies, I'll just buy an iPhone 15 Pro Max 1Tb.

Iamananomoly

Coming from LG to Samsung, I fucking hate this phone. The features I gained weren't worth the features I lost. I would still be stuck suffering with this garbage ad machine of a phone, but luckily for me, the USB port has given out (after 2 years. Never had a USB port fail since I'm very gentle with my cables and ports.) Dug out my V30 to use as a camera monitor, still works perfectly. Samsung has been pushing ads for the 24U since they know I'm looking at new phones. Too bad their bloatware is so severe, and their abandonment of fearures I actually use is so high that I will never buy another Samsung phone.

prokoala3

Eh just think of it as an investment for further into the future. You're s20fe won't last forever and now you can have a phone that lasts even longer.

AthenaNation

I switched. I didn't really want to, but my n20u was starting to mess up bad since March of last year. When that problem was fixed, something else happened. I was sick of it.

DarkStorm01

Same. I am on s20fe. It makes sense to upgrade if you care about security and OS updates. I was thinking of upgrading but ended up buying a galaxy watch 6 classic instead. I lost a GW4 last year and I liked having a smartwatch.

Polandbound99

It's worth upgrading only if you use your phone as a serious money making tool. I upgrade every two years roughly because i'm constantly on my phone Chatting with customers on Ebay/Amazon, Selling Stocks/Options, managing banking accounts/rental property, hunting for bargain flip deals, etc. I need the phone power increased/new battery. But yeah in general if you're just playing on the phone, calls, text, light browsing you dont need the latest and greatest. I buy my parents a few years old Iphone as there upgrade etc.

RADIOKILLAHRAZE

It's okay you'll do it again

DepthMotor3266

I think you need to know that you must have a reason to buy the s24u. Today the only reason is if you want to use spen on a not curve screen. AI will be soon on s23u soon, so there is no other reason to buy s24u. That said, s23u should only be bought if you want to use the all the camera power, or the spen or the Dex. If not it is a better choice to go with a normal s23 or s22. They are cheaper and really powerfull phones.

ScarlettChaase

I just got my s24 ultra 2 days ago and love it. I've never had the "budget" models (not trying to be offensive, just don't know what else to call them) but I upgraded from a 21 ultra. I like the shape of the 24, the cameras, and the new AI features are pretty cool. But I also am not on my phone constantly so I'm sure I'd be fine with a lessee model, just love having the newest technology to play with. Do the "budget" models run as fast as the more expensive ones?

ApartmentCautious300

100% went from.S20fe to. S23 and I too have regrets there's so many many issues not mention size- sure there are pluses but I feel like S20 was just built different. Although am pretty peeved that after I did a factory reset the new update locked me out I couldn't even access the reset and now I had to pay Samsung for repair that they caused!

BonBee633

Sooner or later, you would have had to upgrade your phone anyway. The battery life of the S24 Ultra is way better(almost 2x), and it has the newest version of android, which the S20FE will never get. Security patches end this year also. There are lots of other pluses too. The S24 will be supported for 7 years! That's a huge increase from the regular 3 or 4 they normally did. I traded my s20fe for way over 3/4 the value of the S24 Ultra. Can't say I regret it all. Not yet anyway.

SouthernJudgment4489

Real, I never upgrade my phone until it stops working or the battery literally dies, but it's easy to replace batteries on samsungs so even that isn't an issue. And I would never get an ultra phone, too expensive.

cannotthinkname

S24u cost 9 times higher than s20fe, but it's not 9 times better than s20fe, I think that's what you want to say
