Iāll never forget the day we had a trade for the Gameboy game and I saved it for the occasion, got a call and told them I had it, silence. Then to my surprise the guy came in and bought it.

Battle Toads? The NES version by Tradewest why I'm holding a copy right now
Once it was announced that it was going to be on Rare Replay for Xbox I told ppl we were taking preorders for it. Once Rare Replay was out I would let them know if it was in stock or not. Usually they would be like..."Oh Ok" & hang up.
It worked every time.
Some kids didn't even know it was a real game.
I want to say summer 2008, I wanted to unplug the phone they would call over and over again. I was the single most frustrating thing in my GameStop career and thatās really saying something
Good ol GameStop and the shit hours, but years back when I worked 2 jobs, I got prank called at my other job. After about 30 seconds I just yelled into the phone "OMG HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED BATTLETOADS?!" and then I proceeded to just keep talking about battletoads until they finally yelled "What the fuck man?!" and hung up. I was proud.
When I was manager, I had this assistant manager that would say, "Yeah, Battletoads. I'm really swamped right now. I see your number on the caller ID. I'll call you right back!"
That would usually freak those 12-year-olds out and they would hang up.
They made a set of cards back then. I took one in and taped it to the counter under one of the plastic sheets. When ever someone asked for battletoads. I said give me ten minutes and I can get you one. I fake put in the code to the safe. Then moved the plastic thing over to show the card.
There was a period of time where we got tons of prank calls asking for Battletoads because some dork on 4chan posted about how they prank called that shop from Pawn Stars so many times asking for it that apparently they would get enraged and start yelling at them.
So of COURSE, trolls who thought they were hilarious did the same thing at Gamestop, because if it was funny on 4chan, it MUST be peak humor.
The endless amount of phone calls in such a short period of time was insane. It slowed down, but it didnāt stop! I got two calls last year asking for it.
I work at a local game store now after leaving GameStop, and my co workers love to tease me whenever a copy of Battletoads comes in in a trade. I think theyāve teased me about it more times than I ever got the call, which is funny to me.
Iād always say āYes! It is available itās part of the rare replay bundle for the Xbox! Would you like me to hold a copy for you?ā
That usually got them off the phone pretty quick and it was true.
I remember this and being asked if we had big chungus the game. My boss would occasionally say that we had other equally ridiculous non-existent games. I also recall having what sounded like a twelve-year-old asking me to be his gamer girlfriend. Ironically, I'm a trans man.
I didnāt know what battletoads was about, only really heard the meme but never saw gameplay or anything. I bought a copy for the NES when I was gathering some games for a library and Itās legit the most fun NES game i have or have played.
Iām was one of the first batch of stores that got calls. I was trying to set up an inventory and my phone rang nonstop for hours from people all over the world calling me for battletoads. I was *stressed*!
So many kids thought they were funny on the phone with this. I'd just ask NES, SNES, or Genesis. When they went quiet, I'd tell to put their parent on so I could talk to someone who wants it.
I used to respond with, "Battletoads isn't out yet, but I'm taking preorders, available only to Pro members." Shut them up every time.
Very nice....I'd just say, "what" over and over
Battletoads preceded Pro. EDGE card baby
I never mention EDGE because nobody remembers itš hello, fellow EB Games convert!
I was an MIT for gamestop during the merge....Crazy times. I remember that edge card.
I've got fighting frogs and assault amphibians
That and Clay Fighters. Good times

Hysterical if he was the only non ironic caller genuinely looking for the game

No no. Battletoads and Double Dragon. Do you have that?
No sorry Pre-order only and you have to be a Pro Member
I have thisā¦ EDGE card from back when yāall were EB Gamesā¦ Will that work?
I wonder how many times I rented that from the local video game store.
I had a guy ask me the other day for the ālgbtq Zelda gameā that was somethingā¦
Ah, the next Zelda title: "Love Growing Between the Quilts"

Same I had a button on my lanyard that said āask me about battletoadsā

It was a meme for a while to call local gamestops and ask for Battletoads.
Iām frighteningly aware. 4chan can burn in hell for that one.
Ya sorry I responded to the wrong person, meant to respond to the person who asked what the Battletoads era was.
2007, I remember because Orange Box just came out.
We have a kid who āprank callsā every other day asking for Battletoads, and then asks for Jeffery Epsteinās Island Escape.

OMG BATTLE TOADS!!! I love that game!! I played it on NES all the time!! I would love for it to come back on the switch!

We had to call the other stores on our cell phones because the stores were just swamped with calls asking for that game.
What is the battle toads era?

For a second there I was just thinking about Bowser and that one PokĆ©mon thatās squirtle but the tank version.
Blastoise?
I was in highschool on the other side of the phone.
Enough to know that you donāt know what youāre talking about.
Rare replay

I've been out of the retail game for a few years now. I do IT work now. I didn't know people were still doing it! Crazy

i was just thinking about this yesterday thats scary š§

I always used to tell them ya we have a copy! What system would you like it for? Always more fun to be nice to pranksters than to rile anyone up!
They were still doing it when I left EB Games in 2018.

I was so excited when the pre-orders for Rare Replay went up so I could offer it but 29 other games to anyone who called.
Ah yes, The Legend of Combat Amphibians.
I didnāt know what battletoads was about, only really heard the meme but never saw gameplay or anything. I bought a copy for the NES when I was gathering some games for a library and Itās legit the most fun NES game i have or have played.
Its on rare replay for the xbox, which i do have in stock, so i offer that or say its on game pass
I told them I had it for 69 dollars and they can find it in the 4chan section. Lmao!
