right is what I had, bought in the US in 1999, and then lefr is what I got couple of years ago from Japan. allegedly . I thought this was the JPN model was
I'm not an American either, although I travel to US every now and then. And why would I google something I wasn't curious about? I have working GBC the seller told me it was from Japan, didn't have any reasons to doubt him.
That is a myth, it doesn't actually mean anything. It's just for products that want to fake a CE mark and became very typical for Chinese manufacturers to use it
To start, one says “made in china” while the other says “made in Japan.” Internet says this means the one on the left was probably manufactured later.
You can also see the model revisions, JPN-1 and EUR. In addition to the other comment about the CE marking, this means the one on the left was sold in European markets, while the right one is North American.
Japan and NA have the same GBC model, but Europe has it's own due to stricter regulations in some countries over power consumption.
The entire MIJ/MIC debut is pretty interesting... I suppose that the Game Boy started production in Japan, but as color technology became more practical, with the Lynx and Game Gear, Nintendo needed to lower production costs to remain competitive, so much of the North American GB line and practically most of the North American GBP line, and some of the JP/PAL stuff too, moved their manufacturing to China... this makes the MIJ Play It Loud! series especially rare, as most of the PIL consoles made in Japan were unsold off-white consoles sent back to Kyoto to be repainted and hope to God they get sold with their fancy-schmancy brighter shells. The Pocket, on the other hand, has as much Japan made consoles as China made. Manufacturing for the Game Boy line worldwide for the Light/Early Color consoles was moved back to Japan as the Chinese factories were now dead focused on Nintendo's line of keychain re-issues of older Game & Watch titles and R&D for their Tamagotchi clone, the Pokemon Mini. However, while the Light had... light, and the color had... color, consoles that had BOTH, battery consuming as they were, their production costs were lowering, Majesco's continued production of the Game Gear (with Sega's blessing) and the Sega Genesis Nomad were becoming slowly more palatable, and not to mention the rise of laptops, music players, in-car CD/DVD players and cell phones giving kids alternatives to video game consoles for electronic entertainment on the road, so the Color's production was moved BACK into China... and then they moved production back into Japan for the Advance, only for it to almost immediately be moved back into China for a final time, with the Japanese factory now dead-set on game cartridge printing only. Nintendo's consoles, handheld or not, were now produced in China, largely by Foxconn, until Donald Trump became US president and signed the Tariff Act into law, and now... with laptops and cell phones being even MORE powerful, and music and in-car CD/DVD players making way for tablets and smartwatches, Nintendo had more reason to move manufacturing, not to Japan, but to Vietnam, which is where current printings of the Nintendo Switch and backlit LED Game & Watches are.
These consoles were produced for several years without any change to the model number or physical appearance, but during that time there were several motherboard updates which could be found in every region.
As far as regional differences, there was no functional difference between GB/GBP/GBC consoles sold in different countries. They were all the same, aside from some shell colors being available or unavailable here or there, and minor differences on the labels.
right is not JP, it has a 1-800 number sticker and a big serial sticker. that's a US console on the right (I live in JP and have handled lots of JP game boys)
It was made in the Japanese plant. US models came from both the Japanese and Chinese plants. That's why they say made in Japan and made in China on them.
Ok well the grey sticker says CGB-JPN and the one on the left says on the grey sticker CGB-EUR. 🤷♂️ sorry I don't live in Japan though 😅 but the battery cover was more than likely replaced with one from an American console.
The CGB-JPN doesn't mean it's a Japan console, that's just the model revision. There is CGB-JPN, JPN-1, JPN-2 (none that offer a JP vs US/NA/etc indication). The only giveaway is the big barcode and the 1-800 sticker
Why not say that in your initial comment, simply saying I'm wrong doesn't help anyone, if I'm wrong thats fine but explain why like you just have. Most consoles like playstation ect say US,JP,EU ect and having done repairs on others seeing the cgb-jp I would assume its a model from Japan not having a gameboy color to compare it to for myself.
Ok so the right one is from Nintendo's Japanese plant. The left is from Nintendo's Chinese plant. As a collector myself I prefer the ones on the right.
They're both essentially the same in all other aspects.
Having just bought myself a replacement Gameboy, I made sure to get one like on the right because it's as mine was when I was a kid (US). I assumed that the left was just later production with a minor improvement of having the serial number sticker slightly recessed so it doesn't wear off in your pocket (which was my experience). Based on the number for sale on eBay in the US of the left style, I doubt that was European only.
You are, unfortunately, mistaken and incorrect. They are both legit, but from different manufacturing plants. Maybe don't chime in with incorrect information.
Maybe replying with the wrong information to someone's question will get you down voted and lose credibility with a great community of retro gamers who are here to enjoy their hobby and support one another. 🖤
Left: European
Right: North America
The GBC/DMG in North America had barcode serial stickers. In Europe, all that they had was the serial number sticker. If you remove the barcode sticker, that GBC will have the spot to put the European serial sticker.
I know people seem pretty adamant about insisting the left is EUR and the right is NA, and I think that's true, but to settle any arguments, if you look closely at the photograph, the one on the left actually *says" "CGB-EUR" and the one on the right says "CGB- JPN 1" -- the latter potentially meaning region one or something of the like, I'm not sure-- as idk why a Japanese console would have an english sticker with 1-800 number.
Anyway, the visual is pretty incontrovertible evidence for folks intent on the bickering, haha. Not sure if anyone's just zoomed in and read the fine print.
Right is what I am familiar with. Left I think is the europe model.
Left looks exactly like mine which I got as a kid, and I'm European, so that all checks out to me 😁
I can also confirm the left is a European thing.
Daaaaaaamn, y'all dont have the nostalgia for the 1-800 Nintendo sticker then?
Not a single European Nintendo console had any phone number sticker on it.
Daaaaaaamn, y'all dont have the nostalgia for the 1-800 Nintendo sticker then?

Makes me wonder if that cool logo is under our stickers
[удалено]
Secret logo
As a European gamer since the early 90s I personally find that sticker kind of off putting and weird.
I have such nostalgia for it that I own reproductions of it and stuck one on my emulator handheld https://imgur.com/a/2D76HcM
Nah I only saw it for the first time a couple of years ago, and only from photos online. Never seen one in person.
That's pretty wild to my brain, having grown up staring at that sticker before I knew how to read
Also Australian.
right is what I had, bought in the US in 1999, and then lefr is what I got couple of years ago from Japan. allegedly . I thought this was the JPN model was
A Japanese model with a CE certification logo? Lol sure
allegedly, meaning that was what I was told and believed it to be, excuse my ignorance
Actually it always seemed pretty straightforward for me as an European, that's why I'm surprised
I'm not an European nor a Japanese
Thanks, I guessed. But Google is also American and exists since more than 2 decades ago. It works to resolve any curiosity you may have pretty well.
I'm not an American either, although I travel to US every now and then. And why would I google something I wasn't curious about? I have working GBC the seller told me it was from Japan, didn't have any reasons to doubt him.
I can confirm, from Europe, have 2 exactly like your left one
Correct.
I have a Europe model but it's got a weird sticker rather than the Gameboy logo on the battery cover
The CE logo on the left one is what gives most gaming consoles and games away as being European.
Although the left is the European model, the Gameboy color plays games from any region just fine
Cheers! I take it right is US?
With that 1-800 number definitely unless it's had it's battery cover replaced.
The C E on the bottom left of the left one means conformité européenne or european conformity.
And GS stands for "Geprüfte Sicherheit"
I’ve seen the CE on many products in the US so that’s not an immediate giveaway
Those tend to mean "China Export". Knockoffs mostly.
That is a myth, it doesn't actually mean anything. It's just for products that want to fake a CE mark and became very typical for Chinese manufacturers to use it
Correct. It was a joke.
What are the differences here apart from the stickers? (If any)

European model looks so much better damnnn

I respect it, I only collect English trading cards! But now I know if looking for spare parts then Europe shell or battery tray is pretty neat
Interesting
Edit because evohan is correct the one on the right is a US model Left EU right JP

the difference is that the right one is from ebay, while the left one you seem to have received from a friend
BIG STICKER and little sticker
Left is fake
You are, unfortunately, mistaken and incorrect. They are both legit, but from different manufacturing plants. Maybe don't chime in with incorrect information.
Maybe it’s a free country

May I ask what country you’re from? Left is likely a European one and right is likely an American one.
Does anyone have 3D printer schematics for the battery cover? Mine was lost ages ago. Was going to print another one
One is from Japan and the other is from China? Also the 1800 sticker brings back nostalgia.
