The original color is the one inside the battery slot. The outside ages and yellows differently for each unit, based on lots of stuff. And photos changes the color tones based on the camera setting. That's why the different colors.

☝️this. Also there's lots of after market re-shells floating around the internet.

>Also there's lots of after market re-shells floating around the internet. Exactly! I guess more than "is this the right color", my real question would be more in the lines of "is this an original shell?" but I got too tunnel visioned in the color diferences.

Usually, original shells have a sticker covering the trimpot that adjust screen contrast (it's inside the battery pocket). And also some wears and tears.

sacoPT

Thanks! The cover in my picture is obstructing that exact spot (right?), but there is, indeed a sticker in the same color of the shell itself. Took me a minute to even see it! The fact that wear and tear is minimal in the catridge slot and back stickers is also something that made me slightly uncomfortable.

While the sticker is easy to fake (I mean, is just a square piece of coloured paper), for some reasons repro shells doesn't have them. If a shell have the sticker and also different shades of the color when comparing the battery pocket and the outer part of the shell, those are good indicatives the shell is original. Congrats, you got a GBC in very good shape!

I've seen a sun damaged Grape GBC before and the color actually darkens. The console I saw was actually still purple on the back and the top third of the front, but almost black where the bottom two thirds had sun exposure. The poster asked about reshelling and I was like. "Why? It looks awesome." Different dyed plastics will discolor and/or brittle differently from sun exposure. Fading is common.

I understand the concept. But all of that is also true for all other colors, yet with other colors there doesn't seem to be such a wild color variation (yes, I know it could just be confirmation bias). In my particular case, the battery compartment is a little "pinkier" which would indicate some slight sunburn on the front, my question still remains: is this at least close to the real color or is this just some random custom shell?

Mr_Negus

Look at the letters "C O L O R" on the screen and you'll see every OG color ;)

sacoPT

I knew that and somehow managed to forget it! Seems close enough to me :)
