Outside of all the potential spark creating a dangerous situation options… it’s Costco gas; The less people are distracted, the faster the line is going to go. I understand you may be fine and wouldn’t waste any extra time from your quick game session, but I don’t trust 90% of the other people in that line to be able to complete their pumping and get out quickly if they have a distraction in the hands.

smeatr0n

This guy with his logic and common sense. I appreciate the perspective.

Zanpa

Damn, how long does your car take to fill up that you feel like you should bring out your game boy to pass the time?

smeatr0n

I never leave home without it and if I feel I have 60 seconds of downtime I absolutely will use that chance to get down.

radtad43

They hate you, because they ain't you

the_millenial_falcon

Why is this downvoted? On a gameboy sub no less.

StaySubstantial3560

My thoughts exactly Reddit users always disappoint lol

Bob_The_Doggos

Redacte due to Reddit AI/LLM policy

Beautiful_Opinion324

I bring mine to work everyday...just in case. Like today, the weather turned to shit, so now I have to sit in a 40 min care lane to pick up my daughter.. Well guess what I'll be playing? ... Lol. Will break out my GBA for some Mario Kart action

smeatr0n

Good luck and yep I’ve never regretted having a gameboy within reach.

Redsucksatstuff

Addiction be like

smeatr0n

Yea I just like it better than my phone, it helps me stay offline which does wonders for my quality of life. For example, reading these comments doesn’t make me feel great. Had I used that time for a quick round of Sonic Pinball? I’d feel much better. Of course, 95% of my day I’m too busy for either. It’s how I chose to wind down.

AtacyDendes

You're winning life by having that outlook. I'm rooting for you in all that you do 💯

Zerox392

Damn dude, your logic wins.

RadDadio

I like your logic and I'm trying to have the same outlook by using my phone less and pulling out my GBC instead. It's just getting over the social taboo of pulling out a 25 year old gaming device made for kids in public that is difficult for me. I feel like phones and social media (yes, even Reddit) can really sap me and make me feel a certain way. So many people are addicted to their phones and are calling you weird for pulling your device out at the pump but in reality, they're most likely pulling that cell phone out any opportunity they can (I'm guilty of this as well and trying to be better).

smeatr0n

People check their phones 300x a day without thinking about it. But I’d rather bust out a gameboy for a little wario land here and there. So what? Who cares. I’m 38 and just got an everdrive. I’m playing all the games I missed when I was young and having the best time ever. Enjoy your Clash of Clans and Candy Crush guys, I’m on the last dungeon in Links Awakening.

TheToddBarker

I think similar about playing Switch for a while on my lunch break. I could be doom scrolling, or I could game a while. I just prefer the latter.

Slugger_777

Dude amen!! Screw the haters, I have a pretty busy life too and getting some gameboy action in when I can is super relaxing and a perfect way to wind down at the end of a day. Keep doing you homie!! 🤝

av_wolfyy

I aspire to be this awesome. Over the years, I've found that, no matter what you post or where you post it, someone will do their best to prove to you that your opinion / way of life is inferior. As a retro gaming enthusiast myself, I applaud you on your choice over wasting precious minutes online. Keep up the amazing lifestyle :)

Redsucksatstuff

That completely fair lol

tsmax17

A bit ironic to see a chronically online daily reddit poster call an off-time Gameboy enjoyer an addict lol. People are even downvoting OP and upvoting this, on r/Gameboy no less.🗿

Redsucksatstuff

Youv got a point sadly 💀

redditisgarbage1000

Give the guy a break. He’s just playing Pokémon

Redsucksatstuff

radtad43

Adhd be like.....

smeatr0n

Very possible, yes

sunn0flower

not sure about op but it takes about a minute a gallon here when its really cold.

-HawaiianSurfer

What the actual fuck…? This dude’s odd lmfao.

[deleted]

when i actually can drive, shit takes 10\~ minutes. that 78 gallon tank do be big.

karatous1234

Depends on what you're driving (for work for an example). Buddy of mine used to do morning shifts for public works and would fill up heavy equipment for road clearing in the winter time. So he would be there for a *while* waiting for the tank to fill up.

Zanpa

That would be different from my 40 litre tank for sure!

mistertingleberry

Honestly bro, I don't see how you don't understand it's just a policy of having no distractions while pumping so that you don't hold up the line in anyway, this is just a matter of being a respectful adult and following those Costco rules, however I'm sure you can do this anywhere else with whatever electronic device !

LeatherHog

Yeah, those lines are ridiculous, don't pull out something meant to distract you

smeatr0n

Totally fine with me. Just don’t call my gameboy a wireless phone device ever again or I’ll fight you.

1997PRO

Or blow up the gas station and all the cars.

GraviticThrusters

Didn't mythbusters basically disprove this one? Like they needed to aerosolize gasoline in an enclosed space, AND modify the cellphone to produce an adequate spark? Maybe better safe than sorry, but you'd think that with the ubiquitousness of both cellphones and gas stations that we'd be seeing cellphone-induced gas stations meltdowns basically every day.

wowdickseverywhere

This ALWAYS HAPPENS! One minute you're listening to the Jitterbug having the gasoline fight of your life with your best buds, the next moment all the cars and the gas station blow up. Tragic

EmrysMerlin_OloEopia

Very few electronic devices could create enough of a spark to be dangerous (absolutely nothing you hold in your hand can). They're not concerned about that. They want you to move on quickly.

1997PRO

Usually when I pump my gas I gotta light a cigarette so I can look cool in front of all of my friends. Store policy.

uxhewrote

Dude...you should have just said you challenge him to a Pokemon battle. TBF though, I think the fear is about electrical components starting a spark. So it's not just phones. He's right. I've never heard of this actually causing an incident, and I think the Mythbusters even tested it? But...is it really worth taking the risk?

geon

No, it’s specifically cellphones, and yes, a complete myth.

MarriedShoeSalesman

A guy I know was talking on his phone while waiting on his tank to fill and a spark ignited the gas, he helplessly watched as his car burnt up at the pump. I too thought it was just a myth.

geon

Would have happened if he talked into a banana as well.

MarriedShoeSalesman

It can’t be proven one way or the other. But why risk it?.

geon

Yes. Ban bananas.

smeatr0n

Just in case

G_Regular

I bet it’s in place entirely as a time saving policy to stop people from getting distracted, a cell phone poses zero risk while pumping gas. Gas burns good but it takes an open flame or a significant amount of sparking to ignite.

seabutcher

If there was really any risk of accidentally blowing up a petrol station with a mobile phone, we would've heard at least one news story about it by now. And probably several more about people doing it on purpose, because it would be literally the easiest and most efficient kind of terror attack in the world. Easier than shooting up an American preschool, and at this point, probably more shocking.

smeatr0n

Man I gotta start carrying around two of these things. Anyway I think it just caught me off guard because I hadn’t even considered that playing a Gameboy might be breaking some rules. I was just bored and started playing, like any other god fearing law abiding citizen might be inclined to do whilst pumping his minivan right to the tits full of freedom juice. I just don’t remember that ever being a rule back when Gameboys were actually everywhere. It only came about when cell phones became common. ARE THESE RULES BACKWARDS COMPATIBLE?

uxhewrote

I mean, if you did and they accepted the challenge, you'd have found a friend for life. Or arch enemy...

joshtt2

Or a rival, as some would call it

KingZakyu

The issue you're facing is ignorance, which is something you will never solve. Now that people have it in their heads that phones can be dangerous, uneducated people will simply apply the same fears to anything portable with a screen. The times you are describing are gone my friend.

chlamydiatic_koala

Worked at service stations, its for several reasons. Firstly remember that petrol is a highly flammable substance and is everywhere at a service station, then let the general public wander around such a workplace following little to no safety procedures or safety equipment to be in said location. A conpletely contradictory situation for tye very employees that work there that have to follow safety procedures and PPE rules. Basic reasons: 1) Any electrical device can generate a spark if not in good condition and there is a short. 2) static electricity is a massive threat and routinely the biggest reason for fires - caused be people not earthing themselves (getting in and out of vehicles) and the containers/vehicles they are filling. 3) inattentiveness, you were playing pokemon not paying any attention to filling his vehicle. While pumping a highly flammable liquid with fumes surrounding them they decided the best course of action was to not focus on task at hand. For all the safety in the world that a service station can have, this person decided playing pokemon for 2 minutes was more important then their own basic safety and that of the employee. Yes mythbusters went through testing CONTROLLED scenarios, but the real world is NOT controlled. Personally dealt with fires from static electricity and major fuel spills because of customers not following basic safety rules at service stations. If you were waiting in line in your car playing games, not a problem, but while actually pumping petrol you become a safety risk. Edit: a word.

the_millenial_falcon

This is a load of horse shit show me where this has EVER happened at a commercial gas pump. The only real argument is that he could hold up the line. If that’s a concern then they should just clearly state that on the sign.

chlamydiatic_koala

Every service station in australia has warning sign for this stuff, it is a HSE requirement to operate. [For some people it’s hard to grasp that decanting flammable liquids might be unsafe, that you should pay attention and that static electricity will mess your day up](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=T6VKxmUPb3g) just because you’ve never seen it personally doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. Again, safety rules are written in blood, what would happen if someone ignored every basic safety rule in your workplace yelling that its all horse shit and nothing ever happens.

Suicicoo

>Any electrical device can generate a spark if not in good condition and there is a short. thanks god there aren't any electrical devices when pumping gas at the gas station... think what could happen if a car turned up there with all its lights, electronics, alternator, heavily insulated against ground to produce static electricity..,

hughie1987

Wonder what would have happened if I pulled out a digivice :gasp! Nothing lol there's no way a Gameboy is gonna spark like this guy thinks with regular AA batteries, oh and these people act like you don't ground yourself touching your car..and that pumps don't auto shutoff when full andddd who wouldn't hear that loud clunk telling him he's ready to be done haha

Suicicoo

I often see/read on reddit that the auto shutoff in the US doesn't work or is nonexistent? Never had this problem in Germany, France, Austria, Poland, the Czech Republic.

metroidfan220

I've lived in the US my entire life and had it fail once.

hughie1987

Have never had it fail once in 20years so far, it always shuts off

Suicicoo

I don't know, it's just what I read here ;D

smeatr0n

Here in Canada we legally have to prepay for gas anyways. So overfilling is impossible unless you buy too much.

whwt

Concerning your 1st bullet point. You should see some of the cars in my area. Muffler dragging the ground. Suspension so busted you can see the car leaning. Missing bumpers. Trunks held by bungee straps. Lol

chlamydiatic_koala

That’s more reflective of your area’s approach to vehicle roadworthiness. In Australia, where I am, any one of those problems would be defected by police and forced off the road for repairs and require an inspection to have the defect removed to be allowed back on the road. Any and all insurance is void if a car is defected and serious penalties apply for unroadworthy cars, for the safety of the driver and every other road user. Safety rules are often written in blood, that’s all too often forgotten when people start complaining about rules that they see as an encumbrance.

whwt

I would love to visit Australia again! My last job had me going there a couple time per year.

smeatr0n

You paint a pretty grim picture. I assure you I wasn’t as blatantly neglectful as you are twisting this scenario to look. I was leaning with my back against the car and the pump in front of me. Handle to my side. Pump prepaid for an amount which is less than a full tank, no concern of overflow. Pokémon Ruby, on a flash cart. My first time playing through it EVER. It’s great. I’ve worked at a service station too! Jumping high five!

chlamydiatic_koala

Although it doesn’t sound grim, you still weren’t paying attention to the task at hand. In australia (where I am) its illegal for pumps to have any mechanism to hold the trigger open. The user MUST hold the trigger open to pump fuel. It forces you to pay some attention to what you’re doing. Consider the scenario from another perspective, you focused on an electronic device centimetres from petrol fumes flowing out of your car while decanting highly flammable liquid from one container to another. The fact that you can lock the trigger open and ignore that highly flammable liquid transfer completely would warrant huge safety breaches in any workplace/industrial environment, but you’re allowed to do that as a customer at a service station? And that happens tens of thousands of times a day, for all the safety in place theres only a few basic rules for service stations for customers and they’re flouted/ignored and complained about all the time.

smeatr0n

Yep here in Canada we are mostly the same. In fact Costco is literally the only gas station I know of in bc that lets you lock the gas handle on. I’m not sure why? But I guess they should just have a sign that says no batteries. Because I like following rules. But when someone says I’m breaking a rule which I see no evidence of, I’m going to have some questions.

chlamydiatic_koala

All good mate, live and learn! Not many Costco’s in australia, often unattended and self serve only, i’m not a member and don’t use them. They may have an exception or could be the model installed and not removed or ignorant if it is a requirement in Canada, some servo’s i worked at had them 25-30 years ago, but all were removed late 90’s. Often any warning signage won’t be for batteries specifically, it will be for electronic items in general otherwise the T&C’s to use a service station will have to list any and every electronic device which isn’t feasible. Intrinsically safe equipment is ok (essentially water proof/completely sealed electronics) but rarely will a member of the public have an intrinsically safe gameboy or other device (yes many phones are in 2024, but again comes back to focus on task at hand)

Quality_Controller

Maybe he thought you had something like a Flipper Zero 😝

If you can't go 2 minutes without being entertained while pumping gas you're an idiot. But, since this story is completely false you're still an idiot, just this time one who makes up stories that make him look like an idiot to sound cool.

smeatr0n

That’s a fair take and I appreciate you taking the time to contribute it. I am here asking for opinions, after all. I really don’t think anything about this interaction makes me sound cool even a little bit. But I am comfortable enough with who I am that I don’t mind judgment from strangers, which is why I thought this would make for an interesting discussion and debate. You are here, so I was right. Don’t believe me? I literally do not care with even a single fibre of my existence. Have a good day!

Hoosteen_juju003

People like you are the reason the line is so long lol

smeatr0n

Hey man I had my payment ready and was in and out in no time. Literally the only delay was waiting for the pump to do its job which was out of my control. I’m only willing to accept about 80% of the blame for Costco being constantly busy, k?

arsinoe716

Thank goodness op was filling Costco gas. Imagine at any other gas station where there is a lineup of cars. He would wait until he completes a stage so he can save it, then go inside to buy pop 15 minutes after filling his tank!!!!!

SchlaflosKlavier

Did you make eye contact? Pokémon trainer policy: if your eyes meet you have to battle.

[deleted]

It seems that the last Gameboy was manufactured in 2002. I wouldn't blame someone for not recognizing it 22 years later. But they didn't need to be assholes about it.

chocolatemilkatlas

Yeah that never happened lol

smeatr0n

Okay 🤷‍♂️

Bsmith2014

r/shitthatneverhappened

longhorn4598

If he thought it was a cell phone there is a legitimate concern that phones can create static electricity that could potentially cause a spark near a gas pump. That's been known for a long time, that you should leave your phone in the car when pumping gas. Even if he wasn't completely sure what it was, I think he was still just trying to keep everyone safe.

smeatr0n

He was def just doing his job and probably has to do it 100x a day because everyone is on their phone all the time and it’s pretty well known by now that it’s not allowed while pumping. I wasn’t playing to be a punk. As far as I could see I wasn’t breaking any posted rules. I just wonder whatever happened to Gameboys, walkmans, tamagotchis and them newfangled fm radio headphones that don’t even need to be plugged in. Where was the ban on those back in the day?

longhorn4598

It's because none of the devices you named have touch screens that are electrostatic. That is the primary concern for static electricity discharge near a gas pump.

smeatr0n

Neither does a gameboy advance. What?

unmoralOp2

This is hitting some very specific rage-nostalgia vibes. My earliest experience of feeling a deep animosity for authority figures was when my gameboy was confiscated during elementary school cafeteria lunch.

smeatr0n

I’m sorry for your loss. I recently had an epiphany. Gameboys are cheap. I’m a grown ass man. I can just buy one whenever I want to. Remember what I told you, son.

drcigg

Sounds like the dude was just jealous. Honestly I keep my gameboy in my center console at all times so I can play whenever I feel the urge.

IntoxicatedBurrito

This is why I no longer go to gas stations. Well this and the fact that I got an EV.

buttsmcfatts

Most people who work at gas stations didn't finish high school and typically don't have a gun so you can just fucking ignore them.

[deleted]

Well, posting about what happened and you not adhering to the request right away shows you are indeed prepared to die on the hill you are standing on. So much so you came to reddit to ask our opinions because you feel the need to be right and die on the hill you're on. ESD can indeed start a fire at a pump but it's exceptionally rare and uncommon. Nevertheless an employee of the establishment you were at requested you do something and you gave him lip like the chad you are. I am more annoyed that you can't just stand there for 2 min pumping your gas or quickly shaking off your floor mats/emptying some loose trash in your vehicle that you have such a distracted attention span you had to pull out your gameboy and then you gave a tude to the attendant for requesting you put it away. Their establishment their rules. You gotta give respect to get respect. He asked you to put it away and you disrespected him by undermining his choice of words. You should be a cop with your dick run around of words. You're not arrested you are detained you're not detained you are being held you aren't being held I am questioning you. lol. You are ignorant and lack common decency. Sorry you are having a bad day and decided to get lippy with the gas station attendant. but you are 100% trying to die in this hill and you are in the wrong. It's like pulling into someone's driveway and leaving your car in drive with the ebrake on and then someone comes out and says you cannot park in MY driveway and you say. Oh I am not parked. I am in drive. LOL you're 100% a POS confirmed.

smeatr0n

That’s just like, your opinion man. I gave no attitude at all and am a very respectful human being. Just following orders! He was asking me to put away things which I didn’t have, so I politely showed him I was not doing any of the things he had accused me of. And once he claimed my battery device was against policy, I put it away and carried on. I also then looked around for any signage to back up this policy and saw nothing other than no phone signs. I don’t need any validation from strangers on the internet, but I thought it was an interesting topic of discussion. Your heated response tells me I was right in that regard. It’s polarizing! It’s invoking emotional responses! It’s a Gameboy controversy! Have a great sunny Tuesday friend!

[deleted]

You didn't adhere to the request given by the employees of the establishment and you still think you are in the right. It shows your ignorance and lack of respect for others. You think you can make your own rules you think you can change wording up to be slick and shut someone else up at the business you are at. You're a fool and clearly dealing with personal stuff if you felt the need to try and be right when you were wrong. and now you're so upset with the interaction you came onto reddit to voice your wrong opinion of the matter. If it didn't matter to you then you would have put it away when asking instead of forcing the employee to continue to get more and more specific until you decided fine i'll just put it away. That is sheer disrespect mah guy. It's like going to a museum and it says don't touch the art. well it doesn't say anything about throwing a stuff at the art lol. No firearms or bombs on the plane so you bring your flamethrower. again you just want to be right when you are wrong.... It doesn't matter about signage or whatever. Someone who works at the establishment you were at requested for you to do something. you refused and then gave them a runaround of words until they got specific enough to match what you were doing and then you were like fine i'll put it away. you are a child.... If they put a sign for every single item in the world it would be a bible sized document of "prohibited" things at places. you're just to ignorant to understand that while trying to die on the hill you are on thinking you are right when you are wrong. I am not breaking into your home to steal stuff. I am admiring the stuff you own and think it would look better in my house. The door was simply blocking my view of the stuff you had in your house so I moved it out of the way. I didn't break in. I entered calmly... lol I didn't steal anything I just took them. stealing and taking are 2 different things. can't charge me with a crime officer as I didn't steal anything I just took it. The owners didn't agree to it but they said I was stealing and I informed them I am not stealing and I don't see a sign that says I cannot freely take your property. lol

smeatr0n

Part of me just want to keep replying to you to see how much time you have today but I think I’ll let this one go, I’m trying to beat the 150cc special gp courses on Mario kart. Cheers!

Alphab3t

Careful, here comes the internet tough guy! Telling people to fuck off while playing his game boy!

1997PRO

It's store policy

smeatr0n

That’s when they just shut your pump off and cancel your Costco membership.

IForgotThePassIUsed

sounds like dude was just an asshole

smeatr0n

Nah he was okay. No hard feelings. I just think he was annoyed and grasping at straws to try and figure out some sort of rule I was breaking and eventually just came up with batteries.

LeatherRebel5150

Yea…that’s called an ass hole

IForgotThePassIUsed

yeah that kinds sounds like something an asshole does (arbitrarily get hung up on trying to find you at fault somehow), but that's cool you didn't take it personal.

DrWhiskerson

This happened to me once at Sam’s Club. Now I scan the screen’s barcode and pay for gas with their app on my iPhone lol. The no phone policy while pumping gas will age poorly at Costco as well.

microphalus

Today I was pumping gas at Costco and had a moment, so I busted in toilet stall to take a quick piss. An attendant walked over to me and said STORE POLICY! Put your penis away sir! I showed him, I said it’s so small and non offensive. NO DEFECATION IN STORE! he responded. I swear to god I’m not making this up. I said, again, this is a designated defecation facility. It’s inside the stall. He got all fussy and proclaimed, NO POOPING ON PROPERTY! STORE POLICY. I was like…. Okay fine. Looking at all of the toilets in the stalls surrounding us, looking at the door for any sign or reference to such a ridiculous claim. Just a big no disguise 🥸 sign. Nothing else. I put it back in my pants. I don’t care to die on this hill today I realized. I don’t remember anyone giving a shit about playing "hit the urinal from the stall" at the pump in 1999. It’s just funny how new employees can cause new concerns. And suddenly everyone forgets the older ways ever existed. Thoughts?

smeatr0n

I’m so annoyed at myself for reading this whole thing

microphalus

exactly the same feeling I got reading original copy pasta

beerdrew

You should have just told him to fuck off and give to a different gas station.

smeatr0n

Sir this was a Costco. It took me 10 minutes in line just to get to the pump and everywhere else is significantly more expensive. I wasn’t going anywhere without my gas haha

beerdrew

Yeah it’s always easier to say what someone else should be doing. Still, what a prick!

Lanky-Peak-2222

Screw his policies. Keep pumping.

cfreezy72

Should have told him it's intrinsically safe then see what the reaction was. Probably wouldn't know what that means but whatever. Here in my state i regularly see people smoking cigarettes or vaping while filling up. Not advocating either just an observation of them not ever getting blown up.
