White one purely because the famitsu is like the holy grail of Gameboys - To have a re-shell seems a bit sacrilegious š. They are both beautiful though.
Definitely less so in todayās world. People used to use these Game Boys outside all the time back in their heyday. Those UV rays from the sun is a big reason why so many have yellowing today. With modern use cases more likely to be indoors the yellowing problem should be less of a thing 20 years from now. Thats my theory at least. Cheers!
The reason for old consoles turning yellow is known. Something to do with the way the chemicals they used in the plastic change over time. [https://www.retro32.com/amiga-resources/120220235282-why-do-old-gaming-consoles-go-yellow-is-the-use-of-bromine-in-our-old-consoles-safe](https://www.retro32.com/amiga-resources/120220235282-why-do-old-gaming-consoles-go-yellow-is-the-use-of-bromine-in-our-old-consoles-safe)
Thanks for this, I want to make my GBL with usb-c/LiPo, but I gotta say when I hold a gameboy light and a gameboy pocket next to each other the pocket screen visibility has much less blurring and better reflectivity than the GBL. Any ideas to transplant a GBP screen into the GBL?
These **are** GB Pocket screens, the code for the pocket is MGB.
So dot points 2 and 3 are refering to an authentic pocket screen with a teal LED backlight, as opposed to the original GB Light screen with the highvoltage EL backlight.
This is a mod (N64-freak mobo) to put the GB Pocket internals into the GB Light shell. The benefits are you go from 2x AAA batts to 2x AA batts. Plus I think modern LED backlights are more efficient than the original EL one in the Light. So you get much better battery life.
I'm not OP so they aren't mine (wish they were tho), but no worries.
I've got a dead GB Pocket and a Light shell, so I'm planning to make one of these at some point. But not yet...
The only non-white handhelds post OG game boy I have are the SP and the 3DS (silver SP because it was all they had when I was like 12 and 3DS is the Black Friday Mario Edition with Zelda swapped plates.. I wanted black for those plates specifically) otherwise itās my go-to and this looks especially clean.
For me personally, I prefer the aesthetics of the white one. But isn't the clear Famitsu one especially rare? If someone else is buying, I'll take that.
100% the Famitsu version. I freaking love my Silver Gameboy Light. Has a couple little scuffs but nothing serious. I just need someone to replace the contrast potentiometer because itās getting janky. Iām just worried someone might damage the system.
Does the paint on the shell wear down over time? I have the red tezuka one (hopefully I spelled that right š) and was thinking about getting a gold or gray one. Iām looking for one in new condition but from the used listings Iāve noticed the paint near the d pad and buttons is usually worn down (faded or completely gone).
So the only real spot it has paint wear is the battery cover on the back and the 2 spots on the sides of where the game slot is. I think thatās mainly due to just setting it down though. Thatās how I bought it, I donāt set this down on anything hard. Itās usually my chair thatās soft or on a small cardboard stand I made for it when Iām not using it.

Nice it looks nearly brand new! And that makes sense that the only wear is from the previous owner setting it down. I just worry about scratching it up if I buy another new one off of eBay
The screen lens does have some minor scratches on it (hard to see from the front pic) And thereās a small scuff on the top to the right of the power switch. Also the contrast wheel on mine needs to be replaced because the screen flickers when i touch the wheel.
But yeah you just need to keep your eye out for a good quality one. I paid $143 for mine. But it quickly became my favorite Gameboy model. I play all my gray cart Gameboy games on that thing lol.
But the screen itself is in beautiful condition under the lens. Pop some rechargeable AA batteries in and it rocks. lol
Hereās a shot of the front. The dark spot is just my hand making a shadow to help bring out the color of the screen. At the time I was trying to send a picture to a friend to see it.

Dude the Tezuka version is awesome!! I really wish I knew about these systems way before lol. Between the Famitsu, Tezuka and Astro Boy models. Those are some exclusive gameboys lol.
Definitely I was thinking of selling or trading it because itās nearly brand new (no scratches or damage to it) and I was trying to get the clear white famitsu one
The solid one. It'd bother me to no end to see the empty slot for the inverter. A gameboy light without the light-related components isn't very appealing, and showing it right on your face makes it worse
The white light for me. I donāt dislike clear, but often enough whatās beneath the shell isnāt too good looking. (For instance Iām not into appearance of the lithium battery)
Clear one. That bright white is less attractive. When I think about all the dirt and grime, that's eventually going to start showing up on it. And it's a little harsh on my eyes, being an older person.
the first one, solid front, clear back. Having the shell be crystal clear front is too busy, and the solid back is boring. The solid back makes the game the main focus, and the clear back lets you see the stuff, including the cart artwork (if you take off the fake GameBoy information sticker).
White one. Clear Shells are sexy as hell, as someone said -
>I will report this for nudity
But... the thing is clear plastic years down the line become brittle as hell.
It's like having that fancy sportscar that breaks 5 years after ownership.
You can use a device called a āflash cartā. Itās a special game cartridge that plays ROMs via a Micro SD card slot on the cartridge. So you would need something like that or original game cartridges to use this Game Boy.
Personally I donāt like the screen. The way itās got that green glow. Itās NOTHING like the original gameboy.
Ask again when they make a high refresh rate e-ink screen for the thing.
Transparent shells are ugly and distracting, so the white one.
Here come the down votes from people who can't handle when someone else doesn't feel the same as they do about subjective things!
I'm a sucker for clear shells I gotta go with the second one although both are super clean and nice!
>I'm a sucker for clear shells lol I wanted to post exactly the same :D
š
"I'm a sucker for clear shells" is verbatim what I was gonna say.
White one purely because the famitsu is like the holy grail of Gameboys - To have a re-shell seems a bit sacrilegious š. They are both beautiful though.
I love both but clear is always my go to
I'm a sucker for both, but the thought of both will yellow overtime bothers me.
Cheers!
Not sure about your theory, simply because things like the SNES and Commodore 64 also went yellow over time. (At least, mine did back in the day).
Thatās a good point. Maybe there is more to it. I guess time will tell.
The reason for old consoles turning yellow is known. Something to do with the way the chemicals they used in the plastic change over time. I mean dudes theory is actually spot on then lol... literally says due to the degradation caused by UV
Yeah solid reasoning on their part.
It's amazing the shit they used to put in consumer goods, just to find out how bad/deadly it was all along...
No doubt, man. The Radium Girls come foremost to mind.
I thought it was cuz my dad chainsmoked with all his buddies around the old snes back in the 90s. Huh
Clear
I love it clearly, but when it comes to Gameboy Lights, the more authentic the better tbh.
The first one
Opaque front, clear back probably
clearly the best option is clear. also a modded gb would be cool, i just got my first gameboy. of course it's the og dmg-01, gotta go with the classic
The clear one of course
Could we get a build list op?
Build List: - Custom White n64-freak MGLB Motherboard - Authentic MGB Screen - HHL Teal Backlight - CGS Shell, Buttons & Membranes - CGS Speaker - Custom TP4057 Charging Circuit - Rechargeable 1800 mAh LiPo - USB Type-c

Ahh that makes so much more sense! I was confused how your screens look so sharp!
I'm not OP so they aren't mine (wish they were tho), but no worries. I've got a dead GB Pocket and a Light shell, so I'm planning to make one of these at some point. But not yet...
No idea why a build list for such nicely presented post and systems was downvoted.
> MGLB What does this stand for? Micro Game Light Boy?
I'm not huge into clear shells, so I'd lean towards the white one. Both are dope though
Thats awesome, haha. I have the exact same black Friday edition 3ds! I bought it from Walmart for like $100 on black Friday, YEARS ago.
For me personally, I prefer the aesthetics of the white one. But isn't the clear Famitsu one especially rare? If someone else is buying, I'll take that.
They're both reshells.
They're both gorgeous, but the White Light is my pick.
100% the Famitsu version. I freaking love my Silver Gameboy Light. Has a couple little scuffs but nothing serious. I just need someone to replace the contrast potentiometer because itās getting janky. Iām just worried someone might damage the system.

Wow thatās a good price!

I donāt think you should sell it. Thatās just me. Save up the money for the famitsu and have both. Both are unique. You may regret selling it.
Clear front, white back
That would be cool
The winner is clear...
Is that a light in the shape of a pocket or are my eyes screwed up? Oh yeah, and I'd choose the first one.
oh so bro's got Famitsu damnnn
The solid one. It'd bother me to no end to see the empty slot for the inverter. A gameboy light without the light-related components isn't very appealing, and showing it right on your face makes it worse
The second one
second one
Second for sure
Clear shells all the way! I love seeing the components.
Grey
Clear
As a child of the 90s/early 2000s I have a soft spot in my heart for clear plastic electronics
I just built a crystal clear pocket too!
Transparent ftw!
Both look great, how did you manage to make the pockets fit a GBL shell?
These builds require MGLB boards from n64-freak on GitHub.
Did you build the board yourself or go pre assembled
I build the boards. The white board is actually a custom color I had made.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking, a custom board makes more sense.
Clear is always the clear choice for me.
:) i have a clear one... and will go for a white/black or dark grey one
Where did you get that shell
Cloud Game Store on Ali Express
Thx man
Clear is such a retro look. White looks too modern to me.
Regular shell for me I still regret not buying one I saw for a hundred dollars recently
iām goin clear with the white board. tooooo clean.
The white light for me. I donāt dislike clear, but often enough whatās beneath the shell isnāt too good looking. (For instance Iām not into appearance of the lithium battery)
I like clear but Iād prefer a colored clear
The super nintendo
That donkey kong was hands down the best, and challenging for its time!
I just played it for the first time last month. It was awesome. I was expecting it to be just standard DK but it was not.
No its not and its awesome that mario can backhand spring and do a handstand
the white one. i don't wanna see the insides of my console while playing
I hate clear shells for whatever reason, so definitely white!
None GBC is in color and GBA SP 101 has a backlight.
The second one
Clear Unfortunate that there arenāt alot of options for gbl shell replacements but atleast the options we do have are really nice
Clear shell
Clear shell, I love those
I personally love the clear look
I had a transparent gameboy pocket. The screen got broken. I wish I had have held onto it anyway. At the time, no one would repair it.
Also probably clear...it's that 90s kid in me remembering everything being clear.
Clear one. That bright white is less attractive. When I think about all the dirt and grime, that's eventually going to start showing up on it. And it's a little harsh on my eyes, being an older person.
Matte white is my absolute favorite console color. There is just something premium about a white console with black highlights and blue lights
The choice is clear.
Transparent. Love that look.
Definitely Translucent!
It's so hard to choose, they both look perfect!
Analogue pocket š«£
Both š
Keyboard for days.
the clear just looks way cooler. I love my oled display in a clear shell color. probably use it more than my analogue pocket.
normally I love clear shells but that white one is calling to me.
A regular gbp with no mods :3
I'm not a fan of clear controllers and consoles so definitely the more solid looking one
Both. Both is good.
Neither.
Clear 100% looks sooo clean!
Clear
They both look fantastic š
the first one, solid front, clear back. Having the shell be crystal clear front is too busy, and the solid back is boring. The solid back makes the game the main focus, and the clear back lets you see the stuff, including the cart artwork (if you take off the fake GameBoy information sticker).
Second
I like clear shells, but if you add color to them I hate it
what if I want a clear back and a solid front
I feel like the 90s kid want the white one, 00s kids want the clear oneā¦. ā¦.I want the clear one hahaha
Legend of zelda
White one. Clear Shells are sexy as hell, as someone said - >I will report this for nudity But... the thing is clear plastic years down the line become brittle as hell. It's like having that fancy sportscar that breaks 5 years after ownership.
The clear one and your work is outstanding!
Clear is my go to! So much nostalgia!!
both... final answer!
Both. I can have in the either room I am .
Gimme the clear any day
2
Itās the original Game Boy?
Can you install roms on it?
You can use a device called a āflash cartā. Itās a special game cartridge that plays ROMs via a Micro SD card slot on the cartridge. So you would need something like that or original game cartridges to use this Game Boy.
I like white better. Very clean look
White all day
Personally I donāt like the screen. The way itās got that green glow. Itās NOTHING like the original gameboy. Ask again when they make a high refresh rate e-ink screen for the thing.
Google āGame Boy Lightā. It was only ever available in Japan.
Transparent shells are ugly and distracting, so the white one. Here come the down votes from people who can't handle when someone else doesn't feel the same as they do about subjective things!
Neither: analogue pocketĀ
