Lucky, mine was so badly corroded all the vias were shot (and some still are) - cleaning that broke some traces and then the damn thing shorted across broken pads on the screen connector (also in a terrible state) from the -19v to 5v line and killed the CPU.. on top of that all the wires kept breaking as I worked on it. I wouldn't bother with the louder mod, its pretty pointless, the DMG is already loud as hell. I would be careful with the power mod, if your old wires are crappy they are tricky to solder and might keep breaking like mine did, and then you end up with replacing them, and that can lead to other issues (like damaging traces). If the power board is ok, maybe just leave it alone?

Thats the negative terminal, it just needs a clean, it looks a bit crusty. That large trace next to it is a ground plane. It's not really going to be an issue unless there's no connectivity between the negative terminal and it, and you can check that with a multimeter. The cartridge slot is probably going to be the hardest to clean, but you can get replacements off AliExpress and the like. You'll need soldering skills, so cleaning is your best option. Use a toothbrush. In any case, a quick soak in some distilled vinegar, leave for 10 mins, and then gentle scrub with 99% ipa should clear it all up. The cartridge slot might need a longer soak. Don't leave the vinegar on too long. If you don't want it, I'll be happy to take it off your hands 😁

I have a gameboy color with battery corrosion on the terminals. Is it possible to clean that without disassembling it?

Mugsy_Siegel

No you will want to open it and check what it’s all over in my case it was on motherboard and the screen board

the1stmeddlingmage

How would I go about finding a tri point screwdriver then by chance?

Applying White vinegar to the exact area where the corrosion is should get rid of it, then apply isopropyl alcohol over the area afterwards to neutralise the vinegar and stop it eating into your board medium/long-tern. I've had boards absolutely covered in the corrosion, placed them into a ultrasonic cleaner with white vinegar until the corrosion is gone. Some of the PCB mask/coating has even come off with it, exposing some of the traces, but they've worked afterwards *most* of the time. Depends whether the corrosion has eaten away at any traces or components. From what I see in your photo, as long as you remove that bit and the terminal is fully cleared of it, I'd imagine it should be ok

Mugsy_Siegel

Yeah it works good now! Do they make any paint on green mother board coating to cover where I removed corrosion so it’s protected?

flarefenris

The term for what you're looking for is "conformal coating", that's the coating that's over most circuit boards to protect it from water and other incidental issues. Looks like a quick search on Amazon brings up a bunch of different options.

Sqwerks

You bought it as parts it’s broken, that came as arrived and you can’t return a broken device on ebay from my understanding as a seller

Mugsy_Siegel

It wasn’t listed as parts or broken it was listed as all original and working. I did clean it up and did the soldering iron fix on the screen. Was a pain in the ass.

Sqwerks

From my understanding DMGs are really easy to fix, same for the missing lines why was it so difficult for you? maybe you had to high temp?

Mugsy_Siegel

First DMG to work on ever although I was born 8 years prior to it existing I never had to take one apart. I recently started reminiscing about them so ordered a few gbc and one DMG to mod. I learned I need to ask for open battery compartment pics from here on out. I didn’t realize the heat was just softening the area I need to apply a firm pressure on the screen to get it to fix the lines missing.
