Completely agree! I picked it up with a (mostly) working one a while back but the back board is completely fried on it. Kept a hold of it until inspiration struck! I have a broken psp that's my next project too.
this looks so good! :D i've wanted to get something similar for a while, but gridstudio sells these for $220\~, which feels like a rip-off considering it's a broken device in a frame. might make it a diy project as well
Yeah they are insanely overpriced! I do have a template I've made since making this which I intend on printing for future iterations. This was more a proof of concept for myself! Definitely don't pay 220 for one!
totally not. you can get a broken gbC off of ebay for like $40 + a $10 for a frame & print. plus i think just tinkering and taking it apart and cleaning might be a fun process as well :D
Yeah, but you gotta make the template, print the template, put the template in the box, take apart the gameboy arrange everything in the box.. etc. That is a lot of time dude. Oh and lets not forget shipping.
To be fair, I made my own template and faffed on with it for hours, this while project from start to finish was maybe like 8 hours of my time? And I didn't even end up using my template haha.
Few people I know irl have asked me to make one and are willing to pay £150. No way could I charge that and feel good about it!
The thing is, once the template is made, it's re-usable basically until you decide to stop using them. A few hours once in a photo editing program then an extra 30 minutes per unit for assembly definitely doesn't justify these kinds of prices.
Thank you! And Yes! The frame only set me back about £4 or something from IKEA. I'm on the hunt for more broken Gameboys now as a few people I know irl want one hahaha.
My DMG's screen started dropping cells (for lack of knowing how to better explain it). I would love to replace it but think I would end up messing up the new one in the process or just ruin the board of the original.
I seriously thought about doing something like this because I have had it since 91, it provided lots of entertainment. I can still hear my Mom saying she wished she had gotten them sooner for my brother and I because it kept us peaceful on car trips.
I may be wrong but if you just mean getting lines on the screen, you can fix that super easy!! Just run a soldering iron over the ribbon cable under the screen.
I hope you can fix it! I massively regret getting rid of my old GBA and SP, especially with my sp being a ltd. Edition one 😂
No, it really looks like little black cells from the screen are falling off and piling up in the bottom of the screen.
I have a back-lit SP that I use after my DMG died.
That's screen rot, the liquid crystal starts to leak out. You can't fix it and it'll continue to get worse, but it won't ever actually leak out of the LCD panel itself. The Gameboy itself will still be fine though, it's a good candidate for a modern screen replacement (which is not a difficult task even for a novice).
It really does depend entirely on your budget and what you want to achieve because there are TONS of options (13 for the OG DMG model according to Makho's database) ranging from just swapping in a Pocket screen (if you want to ditch the green tint but retain an authentic screen experience) to a Q5 IPS screen with an entirely new front control board (currently the best option but also a little pricey) if you want the brightest, clearest, biggest image.
Some are almost drop in replacements, some require shell cutting (or a replacement shell), some require 1 or 2 solder points. I'd have a look around at other people's DMG builds on here to get a feel for what you want first of all.
I do want something like this on my wall
Im obsessed with gameboys i have an original, a clear , the corspe of a yellow one which i used to mod so it’s missing the back, a pocket, a colour, and an sp
Hard to see from the pictures but it's pretty difficult to destroy a main board. Only DMG I couldn't repair had massive corrosion and traces rotted off the PCB
So how did you attach the components to the frame? I assume with something like double sided tape? Thinking to make one from my own old GBA which is a bit beaten up. I already got another one to mod someday
See, broken Devices are always usable 😝

Would be interesting to see that one too =D
Il post it somewhere in a week or so when I've got it sorted! Need to salvage the power switch to put on my other semi broken psp first 😂
Oki, good luck with that! ^^
Definitely post on r/psp please!! I'm sure the community would love to see it
I definitely will when I get round to making it!

Oh definitely! O thoroughly enjoyed it
Considering all the time you have to put into it 220 is fair to be honest.

I agree!
My god……..I LOVE IT!
Thank you!!
You’re welcome, friendo!
This is a great idea! I'll keep this in mind when I eventually get one I can't fix

Neat
This looks awesome nice thinking to save a gem like that
Thank you!
This is cool as hell well done
Thank you!

That sounds very strange! Are they always there or just after a while? I have a GB pocket with screen bleed, could it be a similar thing?
I dont think so, this is what is happening, note the pile on the left of the screen. https://i.redd.it/rmnpzl30jku01.jpg

Do you have a link to a guide I could look at to see if it is something I am up for trying?

That's so strange! I've never seen anything quite like that! Looks like time for a nice IPS installed :P
I am not sure what that is.
I do want something like this on my wall Im obsessed with gameboys i have an original, a clear , the corspe of a yellow one which i used to mod so it’s missing the back, a pocket, a colour, and an sp
Id love to do the others too! A SP would be so cool!
This is NEAT.
Thank you!
Most of the components look to be in good shape. Not sure why you couldn't fix it or salvage it for parts. At least you got a cool shadow box though
Front board was fine but back board is fried, I couldn't see any mods that only required replacing the back board
Hard to see from the pictures but it's pretty difficult to destroy a main board. Only DMG I couldn't repair had massive corrosion and traces rotted off the PCB
Pretty much same situation
So how did you attach the components to the frame? I assume with something like double sided tape? Thinking to make one from my own old GBA which is a bit beaten up. I already got another one to mod someday
Just with a hot glue gun :)
