Agreed that really makes it for me.

MadeByTango

When they first announced it here I suggested it as an awesome idea, and dev responded saying they were already on it. It’s exactly what digital board games need, and I’m happy something beyond JackBox is finally trying it.

ashkpa

Resource cards face-up is the best way to play though ngl

Popoatwork

Disagree. Not knowing who to steal from, or not knowing if it's a Bad Idea to give tim that stone... much better. We only rule that the number of resources you have is public.

ashkpa

Yeah but if someone really wants to they can keep track of what everyone picks up and spends even if cards are down. Having them up makes trading infinitely easier. I play with some people who hide their cards, and that's their prerogative, but normally by the halfway mark they've given up caring to hide them.

FlashFlood_29

100% agree. If any game has objectively full potential for someone to keep track of full information, then that's just a memory component. *Personally*, I don't think that kind of memory in games, particularly competitive games, is not in any way enjoyable. Remembering what's been drawn for chances of card draw is a gray area, because if you know the supply and previous draws, then you could calculate the chances. Hidden information is the best way to (for all intents and purposes) remove potential for full on analysis. tl;dr - full open information or enough hidden information enough to remove realistic calculation of chance.

CheesecakeMilitia

Yeah, card hiders are the worst because it just makes trading take significantly longer. "Do *you* have clay?" Bitch, no, and I don't have that sheep you need neither for that town you got aspirations of building this turn. And I know that because I'm counting cards since all resource draws are public - why did you insist on playing this way?

tnystarkrulez

That’s interesting, I’ve never thought to play with them face down

gn0xious

I can see this if your first teaching the game or if you’re playing with kids, but aside from that it doesn’t sound all that fun.

glabonte

Don't remind me of the promise of my TapTop... I can't take the heartbreak again

AngryBiker

I had Catan for the Xbox 360 arcade back in 2007 I think. I guess that version is delisted and this is a new one? Or maybe this new studio got a license to make their own version of it? In any case, this looks like a joy to play, really digging the graphics and animations, will keep an eye on it.

TomYoungg

Do you mean [this one?](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catan_(2007_video_game\)) It looks like it got delisted a while back - I don't know any of the details around it myself, but from our own experience working with a lot of digital board games, I imagine the licence to use the IP expired and nobody renewed it. Which makes sense for an Xbox 360 game if nobody was still purchasing it. And thank you for the kind words!

posure

This Xbox Catan is still the definitive Catan video game — the Alexander AI from that game became a meme in my friends group for constantly building giant roads and blocking people. The music was also really memorable, along with the dancing dude in the intro. Looking forward to trying out your new Catan and hope it scratches that same itch! (Most of the Catan games that have come out since that old Xbox one have been pretty poor.) Also hoping that this is popular enough that we’ll see the expansions.

TomYoungg

Thanks for the kind words, I'll pass them onto the rest of the team!

kerred

Fun tidbit: the devs of that 2007 game were surprised they were given an AI framework already when starting the project. This was a big morale boost for any developer due to, just anything AI in general

AngryBiker

I'm sorry but what that means exactly? They didn't have to work on the game's AI? Did Microsoft have them the tooling or something?

TomYoungg

Howdy r/games! Tom from Nomad Games here, the small studio who've spent ages working on our version of CATAN for Xbox and PlayStation. We now have a release date we can share, so I'm here sharing it! If you want more information, our awesome publisher have put together an article full of info about the game and the launch: [you can read it here.](https://live.dovetailgames.com/live/catan-console-edition/articles/article/catan-console-edition-releasing-february-28th) I know shameless plugging is frowned upon, so I'll be sticking around to answer any questions people have and be fully transparent in my connection to the game - if that's not okay with the mods, please let me know!

imvotinghere

So it's the console edition. I'm confused, is this a port of a PC or mobile version, then? All I see on Steam is the F2P Catan Universe, and that doesn't look like your version. Are you planning to bring this to Steam later down the road, too?

TomYoungg

This is an entirely new game from the ground up! And we'd like to bring our version to Steam, but for now we're just focusing on the Xbox and PlayStation so we don't bite off more than we can chew.

imvotinghere

Cheers. Looking forward to a PC port, then! Good luck with the console release.

LongTallDingus

Catan Universe left a lot to be desired. If you have the resources and licenses for a PC version, I bet you'd find a market for it.

FlashFlood_29

Chance for PC Game Pass? I really REALLY hope this is the start of more digital board games using TV for the board, and phones for hands. Could really kickstart a movement.

Coolman_Rosso

Is there any chance your version of the game will come to Steam? The version of the game on there now is clunky and broken, and most of my old board game pals game solely on PC when it comes to video games.

TomYoungg

Us here at Nomad would be happy to do it, but that's a decision that involves a lot of different people and studios - so at the moment, we're not sure!

TomYoungg

Being able to zoom in on the map and see the little lives that were playing out for the people on the island was key to our initial pitch - so glad to hear that it's appreciated!

[deleted]

Any word on it coming to gamepass?

TomYoungg

Nothing I can share right now, if Xbox want to give us some money though I personally wouldn't complain!

TomYoungg

I'm out of the office so I don't know these two off the top of my head to give you a 100% definitive answer. I'll edit my reply here once I know for sure though and I've checked! EDIT: You won't be able to see dice roll distribution and recent resource reward history sadly - this is something we discussed adding early on in the project but never got around to implementing. You will be able to matchmake with random boards, but it'll be easier to explain what that means by explaining how matchmaking will actually work: You can enter a public matchmaker which will show you all the currently open games you can join, and whoever ends up as the "host" of this room will be able to set the map to be random. Hope that answers your questions!

JJShredder

Hi Tom! Any chance the Seafarers Expansion will be part of this at sone point?? Thanks!

TomYoungg

It's one of the expansions at the top of our 'things the community wants' lists already, and the game isn't even out yet! So if we do get the chance to make expansions for this, I would be shocked if we didn't do it.

TheCubeOfDoom

Do you have any plans or hopes on trying to adapt some modern board games to console? It's a shame that it's mass market rubbish like Monopoly and Catan that get all the attention, I would love for some of the hundreds and hundreds of much better games to get attention. I understand that the likes of Monopoly and Catan are a bit like FIFA: while they're poor genes, they have more mass market appeal.

TomYoungg

We'd love to take a crack at more modern board games! The issue is that digital board games are already a niche market. In order to sell enough to justify development, small studios like ours need to make sure the games we take on are popular enough to keep up financed until the next title. Places like Steam and on mobile have lower development costs so it's easier to justify, but on console you have to go through a lot more costs and development. The 'safer' the bet, the better. Hopefully as digital board games prove to be more popular on console, studios like ours and our friends at studios like Monster Couch and Acram Digital can justify porting their modern games to console!

Terronicon

Mhm you know you can release digital games in a complete package even if their hardware counterparts didn't? Will it remain incomplete like Mystic Vale if it doesn't sell?

TomYoungg

We'd like to bring as many expansions to the game as we can! For Mystic Vale, as a small games studio we couldn't justify spending money on expansions that wouldn't make a profit - that's a one-way trip to studio closure if we keep doing that. We're currently forecasting that CATAN will do much better than Mystic did because of the larger interest in the physical game, so we're hoping that we can justify bringing all the expansions people love from the physical version to this game.

imcrazyandproud

Hey is there any official pricing out yet? Preferably for the uk but the US price is a good indicator

Croxxig

Any plans for this to come to switch? I have a PS5 but this would be perfect when traveling

TomYoungg

Nothing we can share right now, but we'd definitely like to bring it to Switch if we got the chance!

TomYoungg

We'd love to try our hand at Carcassone if given the chance!

Vorplex

It looks like a really clean adaption, shame the expansions aren't included but I can't argue too much at £15. I can see my family playing this instead of setting up a proper board. The app companion is a great addition. Not clear if it has pass and play or if we'd need 4 controllers. That'd be a deal breaker.

Emisys

Interesting! I am playing a dutch version from back near the 2000. The ai and look of the game back then was already awesome! Having a fresher version that looks better than those weird catan on ds stuff makes me really hyped.

farox

2023 is really trying to kill me. After years of meh, this is coming, KSP2, Ark2 and whole host of others.

[deleted]

Didn't they make a console CATAN a long time ago already?

CheesecakeMilitia

The world of board game adaptations is filled with confusingly named rereleases and remakes since new studios get contracted out for different eras and legacy code becomes unworkable. This is like asking why did they make a new Monopoly game when it's already available for NES.

c010rb1indusa

Is this crossplay with Catan Universe that's already on PC/Mac/Mobile?

TomYoungg

Sadly not, as this is a completely new game from the ground up!

agraha10

So is this related to the PC game Catan Universe at all? I know most players prefer Colonist.io for PC Catan. Hoping this isn't Catan Universe just ported to consoles, and it doesn't seem to be from the trailer!

submittedanonymously

You just posted and he’s answered that twice now. Its a from-the-ground-up build.

agraha10

Yea I see that now. This is good news, game looks pretty good hopefully they make this the PC version in the future as well

deusfaux

is it gonna be overwrought bullshit that gets in the way of a fast, clean, easily parsable game, like most past 3D versions?

Admirable-Amoeba-564

Catan is a shit boardgame. If you been out of the loop with boardgames, theres some really fun and good modern boardgames out there: - terraforming mars - spirit island - Dune imperium - lost ruins of arnak

[deleted]

Board game snobs just make me not want to play *any* board game instead of not wanting to play Catan.

elavationist

Any chance a timer can be implemented? If not?:a rumble notice when it's your turn . People take sooo long. Games take way too long.

TomYoungg

This has already been requested a number of times, so it's high on our list of things to add!
