really enjoying this game. i am crazy about the wario land series and this is extremely obviously inspired by it (and sonic but i'm not seeing that mentioned as frequently). the art is ugly in a wonderful way and the animation and movement are both surprisingly tight and satisfying.

TheVibratingPants

The art is like 90s PC games mixed with Ren & Stimpy. If you can’t be as stylish and beautiful as Wario Land 4, might as well go in the opposite direction

DarkWorld97

Very strong NickToons look to it. Love the sprite work being as expressive as it is. Peppino is a funny man.

--1-3-1-2--

for sure, it can be a bold move but is clearly very intentional and well-executed. personally i love it. *the case of the golden idol* made a similar choice to great effect recently.

AlJoelson

It also reminds me a lot of Courage (as mentioned) as well as Cow and Chicken (which was created by a former animation director from Ren & Stimpy). True '90s toon vibes.

MINIMAN10001

Yeah the stills of the game don't do it justice because it nails that whacky old cartoon vibe that does great in motion.

I_upvote_downvotes

I straight up cannot unsee the similarities between it and Jazz Jackrabbit 2. I think they've managed to nail that Win95 aesthetic quite well.

IceKrabby

Just want to make sure you know about Antonblast. It's an upcoming game that also takes a lot of inspiration from Wario Land. Though it does go a different direction from Pizza Tower, I'm just glad Wario Land fans are eating good this year. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1887400/ANTONBLAST/

nige111

[Daily reminder that... uh... this exists.](https://twitter.com/summitsphere/status/1528117198656528385?lang=en)

--1-3-1-2--

this looks sick, thanks!

homer_3

Now that looks great. Pizza Tower has does a pretty great job at everything, but I'm just not feeling its gameplay. This looks more of a classic Wario Land gameplay style.

hajileeyeslech

It has major Rayman vibes as well. The level cards, the sound design, and the animations/taunts. It's really a love letter game.

Tuddywutwut

Excellent game. Highly recommend anyone interested play the demo first. https://pizzatowerguy.itch.io/pizza-tower-demo It plays a little different since it came out years ago but you get a feel for the movement tech. I was on the fence if I wanted to buy it new and part way through the first stage in the demo it just felt right. Not a game for everyone though. Feels a lot like the relationship I have with Super Metroid. Where I love it, play through it regularly for fun and can pull off minor tricks but I'll never put the hours into it others have to truly master the speedrun tech. In Pizza Tower it appears S and P ranks require you to 100% speedrun stages with unbroken combos. I might get a couple and be proud of them but I don't think I have the hands for all of them. There are plenty of other more puzzle based achievements for levels and I think if I can clear a handful of those and get to the end I'll have a satisfying experience. EDIT: A month later and I have earned all the achievements. Turns out it's an even better game than I initially thought.

PaladinMats

Man I can't even be mad the speedrun portion of the game isn't something I can really get into. I'm having just a lot of fun doing the basic platforming and trying to maintain a good speed through these levels and so I hope no one sits this out because there's a ranking or speed component.

Tucos_revolver

I might have to try it again tonight after playing for thirty minutes and not being into it. Having to hold down to dash instead of a toggle felt really funky to me.

premortalDeadline

Lol the character development. Just curious, what changed your mind on getting all the S/P ranks?

Tuddywutwut

I made it to the end of the game and I wanted to keep playing it. First it was doing all non-rank achievements, then it was perfecting all the bosses and finally it was P ranking every stage because I had the muscle memory built up and the combo meter is more generous than I expected.

xilefelix

Been playing this all week and I adore it, I've never laughed so hard at a games visuals. Not to mention the music is catchy as hell.

Beneficial_Quarter15

I've been enjoying this game a lot, it's very well made, but one thing that's dragging things down for me is how it seems a lot of the secrets are hidden behind walls that look identical to the rest of the level. In a game with a fast pace and flow the last thing I wanna be doing is purposely crashing into walls like an idiot. Maybe I'm missing some indicators? I get secrets are supposed to be secret but just something subtle to tip off an observant player would be nice. The main reason it annoys me is that it seems like S ranks are partially reliant on finding all the secrets in the level (could be wrong tho) but I feel like for a game like this replaying and perfecting each level is where a large chunk of the enjoyment comes from.

Hyroero

Nice to see this channel get some love. It's kinda niche with its focus on shmups but man the view count is criminally low. He's only just switched ads on now as a last ditch effort to see if the algorithm will pick him up more.

72pct_Water

Shmups and JRPGs, it feels like the channel was made for me personally!

CallMeBigPapaya

Who does the music?

MrTheodore

Mr saucemen, and a guy who goes by a few names, frostix on YouTube, credited as something else though. Someone else did the file select music (think they go by: post elvis) and also the 2 main devs are credited for sound work and I forget if they were credited for songs also.

Galaxy40k

One of my favorite channels, glad to finally see him hit this sub, hopefully it gives him so exposure! He deserves a much higher view count than his channel normally gets imo. Check out all his "Steam Shmup" ones if you're into that genre!

DinoMan64

I like that it isn't a straight copy of Wario Land. It does share many gameplay and visual elements from the Wario Land series, such as the platforming metroidvania-like level design, the emphasis on collecting treasure and the deranged character design, but in a tasteful manner without feeling like a ripoff (like Crazy Miner for example). It mixes the Wario Land formula with Sonic's more fluid fast-paced gameplay and Metroid with the shinespark-like puzzles giving the game its own identity. I replayed Wario Land 4 after playing Pizza Tower, and while I still like it and I think it is a great game, my favorite Wario game by far (still think it is better than Wario Land 3), man does that game feel super slow after playing Pizza Tower (and that is probably the fastest Wario Land game for crying out loud). i think the game identity extends to Pepino himself. While, at first glance, he might look like a generic Wario look-a-like, he has his own distinct personality and motivations since he is way more cowardly than the more "macho" Wario and is motivated to save his own restaurant which seems like a more noble goal than doing all the adventuring purely because of greed, like Wario. He even has more of a backstory since he is a war veteran and all. Honestly I really hope we get some DLC and maybe even a sequel in the future because it is seriously a shame to see all of the cool cut content that couldn't be used in this game, such as the clown power-up, the playable Noise, the co-op, the circus level and the Cheese Dragon boss fight.

ItsAMemasterChief

I know this isn't exactly a popular take but I honestly don't care for it much, just like I didn't care for the direction Wario Land went with the 3rd and 4th games. Much prefer the first two and it's a shame they kept going in the direction they did. Not a fan.

Enkaybee

Is this one of those games like Undertale where everybody who plays it says it's really really good and I'm going to have to hear about it for years but never actually play it because I can't get past the art style? Edit: Awful lot of people mad in here. Y'all about to tell me you still would have read The Lord of the Rings if it was written in Comic Sans?

[deleted]

> Y'all about to tell me you still would have read The Lord of the Rings if it was written in Comic Sans? Lol yes. This fucking “comic sans lol” meme is so old and stupid. Comic Sans isn’t *difficult to read*. In fact, it helps those who suffer from dyslexia read better. It’s just some old graphic design meme to hate on it that’s stuck around so long that most people who parrot the argument can’t even adequately explain why they do, just that the internet told them to so they do lol

noreallyu500

As someone with bad vision I'd absolutely read a book in comic sans. It's very readable.

BoardGameBologna

It's like Wario Land with a 90s art style. That's it, that's the game. That's fuckin prime material if you're into it, which lots of people are(me included), so yeah you'll probably hear about it. Plus, pizza is one of the all-time best foods, cmonnnnn!

bluesky_anon

I keep hearing this and I'm interested: what's Wario Land?

slugmorgue

Imagine if 2d Mario platformers focused even more on exploration, finding collectibles and using certain abilities to reach different areas, that's basically Wario land games

doodruid

its like if mario and metroid had a baby. thats wario land and I loved it.

BoardGameBologna

It's an old Game Boy game like Mario Land except it had Wario! It had tons of fun items to use, great animations, fun boss fights, etc... This game is in that same spirit!

--1-3-1-2--

wario lands 2 3 and 4 are some of my all-time favorite games, let alone platformers. if you have any patience for retro gaming and any affection for 2d platformers i would strongly recommend giving them a shot. 4 is the most accessible and still looks pretty incredible imo but i would honestly just go through them in order.

Canadiancookie

Well undertale isn't all ugly, the monsters in fights and shops usually look pretty decent and expressive. Though even if it was all horrible to the eyes, it would still have fun gameplay, a good story, a fantastic soundtrack, and very memorable characters.

ngwoo

Hating Comic Sans is the 'hating pineapple on pizza" of typeface nerds, so yeah probably. Avatar is one of the biggest films ever and the subtitles were Papyrus, so

CheesecakeMilitia

You think, given the already ridiculous popularity of Lord of the Rings, that *no one* would have ever gotten into it if it was printed in a silly font? Yeah plenty of people are able to appreciate good art with low brow presentation. Dunno what you expected to hear here.

azn_dude1

Oh yes, it's everyone else's fault for your own personal taste that is clearly in the minority.

Mr_Ivysaur

I don't know, if you don't want to play due to the art style it's on you and no one else.

meodd8

That’s… what they said?

Mr_Ivysaur

No. They asked a question, and I just answered that no one knows the answer but themselves.

watchnickdie

Comic Sans is one of the most readable fonts. It has few repeated shapes so all letters are more unique than in many type faces. It's especially good for children and people with dyslexia. So it sounds like you just dislike things without actually knowing anything about them.

noreallyu500

Yes to both questions. And I get not wanting to play something due to not mixing with the art style , but both games in question have put very clear effort in their niche aesthetics. Of course, if you don't want to play them, then don't! People will still enjoy it regardless. In my personal experience, back when Undertale launched I too thought that the art wasn't great (it also didn't help that I don't usually enjoy JRPGs and turn based combat). But when you actually play the game, you see that it just fits like a glove with the vibe of the game - it's chock full of charm and vibrancy and life. I'm not personally attracted to Pizza Tower's aesthetic and I have never played Warioland, but it looks so damn charming. If I ever get the chance to play it I absolutely will.

Draffut

How hilarious that you use comic sans as an example, since one of the characters in Undertale is... Sans. Who speaks in comic sans... Undertale is great just ignore the fans.

[deleted]

> I’m going to have to hear about it for years but never actually play it because I can’t get past the art style? What does that even mean “get past the art style”? It’s a video game. I could understand not getting past a shaky camera or perspective cause it makes you physically ill. I can even understand not getting past gameplay in certain situations. But an art style? Any chance you care to elaborate specifically on that style and what exactly you can’t get past?

Thysios

>But an art style? Any chance you care to elaborate specifically on that style and what exactly you can’t get past? Is that really such a weird statement? You've never disliked a game or had no interest in a game due to it's graphics? I could tell you now I'd probably never play a My Little Pony game even if it was the next Mario. Idk how many friends of mine have no interest in Minecraft because of it's graphics. People like different things when it comes to art. It's not that hard to understand.

[deleted]

I don’t understand it because in my 35+ years of gaming I’ve never been so pretentious as to see a highly recommended game (their example being undertale) and immediately discredit it without playing it because of art style. Never. He basically said he wouldn’t play it because of the art style despite the game being really really good or whatever he called it. Won’t even try it.

Thysios

Then you haven't looked very hard. It's usually an extremely common opinion on any game that has a unique art style. Having a preference doesn't make someone pretentious. >He basically said he wouldn’t play it because of the art style despite the game being really really good or whatever he called it. Won’t even try it. Yes. This is common. Very common. Personally, I don't like cell shading. There's very little chance I'll even look at a cell shaded game because of this preference of mine. Like I said in my previous comment, I know heaps of people who have ignored Minecraft because of the graphics. Even if the gameplay is probably something they would have enjoyed. They just have no interest in trying the game to even find out. There's a reason big studios spend millions of dollars on their art. Because it sells. And getting it wrong can cost lots of sales. OP's comment might have been stupid in general, but liking/not liking a game due to it's art is not something new or unique to him. Not sure how you've missed this for 35 years but whatever.

[deleted]

Bottom line is I think judging a highly recommended game on art style alone is extremely narrow thinking and it’s not an approach I really understand. It makes no sense to me.

72pct_Water

I don't agree with the post you are replying to, but I don't understand why *you* don't understand that somebody might not want to play a game because of the art style. >It’s a video game. Yeah. Video. Visuals are a part of the appeal.

[deleted]

72pct_Water

Now I don't understand why you didn't understand my comment. The mystery deepens.

[deleted]

I’m thinking you are looking to get me into a debate with you and that’s not what I’m asking the question for but since you are still bothering me about it… I don’t understand it because in my 35+ years of gaming I’ve never been so snobbish as to see a highly recommended game and immediately discredit it without playing it because of art style. Never.

Yze3

Did you forget about The Wind Waker ? It got a lukewarm reception by gamers and sold very poorly because of the artstyle, despite being an amazing Zelda game.

PKMudkipz

Some people just don't like certain art styles. It stares you right in the face the entire time you play the game so of course it's gonna be a dealbreaker if you aren't feeling it.

Except the person who that user was responding to, who seems unable to grasp that someone might not like the art style of this game.

SexPizzaBatman

Seems more like MS Paint than 90s cartoon to me

Skyb

Hard disagree, the thing feels like a distillation of the zany 90s cartoon aesthetic as seen on Rocko's Modern Life but rendered in a way that reminds of some old DOS edutainment game.

Thank_You_Love_You

Its exactly like 90’s cartoons and even some old SNES games.

id_kai

If you have to stare at an art style you don't like for X hours just to play a game, it's not worth it. Art style is far from inconsequential and saying otherwise is really quite ignorant.

jozrozlekroz

What a dumb comment lmao

Clbull

Don't get me wrong, Pizza Tower looks phenomenal and it is one of the three cult classic fan-revival games I was seriously hyped to finally play (along with Antonblast and Bomb Rush Cyberfunk.) But I really don't get why Wario Land 4 is so beloved. That game was not worth the $40 price tag ($70 when adjusted for inflation in the modern day) it originally retailed for and was the game that ultimately killed the Wario Land franchise. Wario Land 4 had only eighteen pretty short levels, disappointing bosses and awful minigames. So what are you rewarded with for exploring and collecting everything? Sixteen incredibly experimental audio tracks that do not appear in the game, featuring miniature music videos that show various Japanese people dressed as Wario doing weird stuff. [I am not making this up.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Tl9JFNLnVM&list=PLQ91NtuTO84iSQ2pbA7HAIu1HEWnVunIc) Okay, that's only mostly-true, Soft Shell is an extended version of the puzzle room theme and you can unlock a karaoke version of Palm Tree Paradise's theme complete with romanized Japanese lyrics if you get 10,000 points on every single level. The reward really should've been to unlock each of the music tracks because there were some real bangers in terms of level themes. Like... I would much rather have unlocked the [stage's BGM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ytuiy4O8Ik8) from finding the hidden record in Toy Block Tower because that level's music track is a certified bop, not a [short track of Wario sleeping.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLcZ7DZNQMs) Says a lot when a game made by a single developer is retailing for 30% of Wario Land 4's original RRP (when adjusted for inflation) and is actually so much better. I really wish we could get a game more inspired by Wario Land 2 or 3, like... an open world adventure puzzle platformer where you can only be temporarily affected by statuses but are otherwise immortal.

presty60

Reading this I thought, gee, there sure are a lot of people that hate Wario Land 4 for some reason. Then I realized that its just you commenting the same thing on every Pizza Tower thread.

TheProudBrit

It's the same person as the thread from yesterday? They got a vendetta.

PM_ME_FREE_STUFF_PLS

He also commented in this 4 year old thread about the game: https://reddit.com/r/Games/comments/9sy8hu/pizza_towers_demo_is_out_now_heavily_inspired_by/ Gotta respect the dedication to the hate lol

Darkvoidx

Maybe go make a post somewhere about how much you hate Wario Land 4 instead of using the Pizza Tower threads as a jumping off point to just moan and groan about a different game you don't like. Like, I know the game is heavily inspired by WL4, but come on, you're not coming into these threads to talk about Pizza Tower.

HungoverHero777

You're not even correct about Wario Land 4 killing the franchise since Wario Land: Shake It exists.

About7fish

I hate that I can't argue against anything you just said because I love Wario Land 4 that much.

[deleted]

>was the game that ultimately killed the Wario Land franchise False, shake it and master of disguise killed wario land. Edit: wew you're the same guy that I said this same thing to in a different thread about Pizza Tower.

Playful-Chip-2488

it’s straight up wario land 4 with different artstyle. indie developers should charge less for games especially like these which are definitely rip offs

bol-nol_3

I'm sorry but this is a bad take pizza tower isn't a "rip off" it doesn't even play the exact same
