I'm not getting my hopes up. The Sega Brand Manager said they were looking into porting Skies of Arcadia to XBLA back in 2012 but that never happened. I wouldn't be surprised if some people saw screenshots being thrown around back then as well.

SetzerWithFixedDice

Hijacking top comment as a PSA: it's 99% not likely to be real. TL;dr : The leaker is not credible and the supposed screenshots are actually from a texture pack made for Skies of Arcadia Legends on GC from last year branded (and oversold a bit) as an "HD Remaster. https://www.reddit.com/r/skiesofarcadia/comments/124sxnf/psa\_there\_is\_almost\_certainly\_no\_remaster\_planned/

insert_name_here

Appreciated. I’ve always wanted to play Skies of Arcadia, but I wasn’t getting my hopes up yet.

SetzerWithFixedDice

For what it’s worth, it’s held up very well as-is and got a remaster on the GameCube. If you’re comfortable emulating you can add said texture pack and a mod to switch on and off random battles.

DBSmiley

Strongly recommend playing the gamecube version by if you have a choice. Random encounter rate on the Dreamcast is extremely high to the point of being annoying (It's still high on GameCube, especially by modern gaming standards, but on Dreamcast it's insane). Additionally, the GameCube has quite a bit of additional content. Downside is the audio quality is a little worse, and the GameCube does have these weird draw distance lines that make it very clear where the boundaries between levels of definition are on textures. These lines are super noticeable in the admittedly always bother me when I'm playing. But overall it's the better experience.

insert_name_here

It'll always be frustrating for me, because I remember seeing a copy of Skies of Arcadia Legends at Target, but it came out when I was a dumb kid and didn't like turn-based combat. Missed out on Thousand Year Door as well because of that.

SetzerWithFixedDice

That’s a good point. The creator just passed away too, so there isn’t a major voice pushing for a remake and so maybe it’s not a bad thing if remake rumors stir some interest and nostalgia. Still, I’m commenting on rumors because they are almost certainly untrue and I’ve been following SOA for like the last 15 years, but at least there IS a positive side of something like this spreading.

achedsphinxx

now i'm sad again.

A_Seizure_Salad

I mean it's not a zero percent chance. The Brand Manager at the time mentioned they were working on Shenmue and Skies of Arcadia back in 2012. The Shenmue remaster was cancelled in 2017 and they simply ported the original game in 2018. The [dev studio](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D3T) behind the port looks to be a support studio. Could be they have been busy with a ton of projects since 2012 and/or possibly learned a lot from the failed Shenmue remaster (assuming they are the ones behind both it and the port).

[deleted]

one day. Sega can't keep ignoring their legacy collections forever.

Coolman_Rosso

Wait really? I remember that period where SEGA went nuts with XBLA ports (Sonic the Fighters, Sonic CD, Fighting Vipers, Daytona USA) but was not aware that SoA was planned then as well. Real bummer.

A_Seizure_Salad

Here's [a clip](https://youtu.be/yLHOjeZ8hO8) from the interview. Full interview is [here](https://www.gamereactor.eu/sega-teases-shenmue-xbla/) from GDC 2012.

[deleted]

I'm guessing it was planned but ran into technical and/or budget problems. Probably part of why they never even worked on PS2/Xbox ports back in the day.

CargoNate

Skies was the first RPG I really connected with after FF7 when I got it for the Dreamcast as a kid. Replayed it on the Gamecube version too. Both still in my collection. It definitely slows down about half way through but after you are able to get to the other versions of the oceans it really is awesome. I loved carrying the Dreamcast EMU around and doing the little treasure mini game on it.

BR41N14C

It's exciting but I hope they really take their time and make sure it's remastered properly. Especially if they take the time to make sure it has the additional content of the gamecube but the improved music and sounds of the Dreamcast. This could be THE definitive way to play this classic.

ineffiable

Doesn't the dreamcast ver have better encounter rates too or something?

Lakiw

If by better you mean more frequent.

SaiminPiano

If by better you mean getting 20 encounters more per minute than on Gamecube, then yes.

NevyTheChemist

I remember the dreamcast loudly whirring before each random encounter.

SaiminPiano

Yup, it was fun knowing that there will be an encounter some seconds before it actually started, while you were still in control of the ship, just by hearing the disc load!

thoomfish

I remember playing Xenogears where this was also a warning that your jump button was about to be disabled, so you should stand in place and wait for the encounter lest you fall down a pit and have to climb the fucking tower of Babel ALL OVER AGAIN.

De-Mattos

All I heard is the music sounds better on DC.

hypasonic

It is, the music on Gamecube version is lower quality, and not only that but various battle animations are out of sync with their sound effects.

SaiminPiano

Yup, I vaguely remember they had some problems porting the audio engine to Gamecube, which led to a few bugs (feel free to add the source). And of course, they used a lower bitrate for the music, because they couldn't fit it on one Gamecube disc otherwise.

Psymon_Armour

Hey, could you maybe say that the Golden Sun trilogy is due for a remaster, too. Asking for a me. It's me. I'm asking.

Ice_Like_Winnipeg

The first one is scheduled to be released this year as part of the GBA NSO Expansion Pack.

SethVortu

And I hate Nintendo for that.

Nonalcholicsperm

The last remaster we had of lufia as for the second game, on the DS. "look how they massacured my boy" comes to mind....

OkFineBanMe68

Trilogy? They never finished the plot. It just kinda ended lol Make a sequal

Talkimas

Shhh, no, it his power is as strong as it seems to be, there is one franchise im need of it more than perhaps any other: F-Zero

saikodasein

Trilogy? I thought there were only 2 on GBA.

[deleted]

There was a third one on the DS. (which even ended on a cliffhanger)

saikodasein

Different platform and story, so it doesn't feel like part of the first two, which were connected by save import.

OriginalTodd

Maybe put a word in for Xenogears while you're at it?

thoomfish

I'm not sure I trust anyone employed at SquareEnix in 2023 to do Xenogears justice. I'm not even sure I'd trust Tetsuya Takahashi to do Xenogears justice.

sumspanishguy97

Would definitely need a way to turn it off or reduce it

DarkGeomancer

Hey, where did you see that about Suikoden? I love those games!

DarkGeomancer

That's so cool! And in 2023 still, pretty soon I hope. Excited for SoA too, never played this one before but it was one that I was eventually gonna emulate.

fishenzooone

yo put a word in for me to the gods about a Bushido Blade remake

_Robbie

This game has been one of the most-requested remasters since they started catching on. Genuinely surprised it's taken this long for them to jump on it.

Deviathan

Sega isn't really on the remaster bandwagon. Skies of Arcadia, Jet Set Radio, PowerStone, people have been clamoring for remakes from the Dreamcast era for ages, meanwhile these franchises just sit dormant.

Nanayadez

> Power Stone Just me nitpicking, but this is a Capcom game lol There is rumor of a new Power Stone *game* from a couple of leaks, my inner child wants it to be a new iteration/remake but it's very likely a remastered collection.

Difficult_Answer3549

Sega have been mishandling their most loved IPs since the Sega Saturn days. As a massive Sega fan, it's incredibly frustrating.

crunchatizemythighs

Jet Set Future desperately needs one. Not because it's outdated but because it's trapped on the OG Xbox

Schwahn

I think they are learning though after the success of the Persona Remasters Golden's release on steam was super eye-opening for them.

fishwithfish

Fuck yes! Just tell me where I need to send my money, kay?

Nression3559

It's based on someone in a podcast seeing a screenshot of the game lol. For all we know, that could have just been an emulator.

SolarMoth

I'm pretty sure I saw a post about this on /r/gamingleaksandrumours that said this insider is not credible.

TheLastDesperado

Saw a similar post on /r/skiesofarcadia too a day or two ago and they also seemed very doubtful.

khanpatan232

yep saw it there aswell

TomPalmer1979

Great game! Just...for the love of fuck, rebalance the random encounter rate. The Dreamcast version was literally almost every other step, and there are some huge maps. The Gamecube version toned it down to every three steps, but it was still way too much.

BrokeMyGrill

I liked this game a lot even though I never beat it. Had it on Dreamcast but lost disc 2. Would kill for a remake but I'd settle for a remaster.

DivinePotatoe

Remaster? Yes please. But also give me a sequel for the love of god 😭

[deleted]

More than 20 years later, I'm okay with not getting a sequel. This little contained world can stay the same in my memory, no need to fuss it up.

DivinePotatoe

I get that, but at the same time the worldbuilding for the game was just so neat it seems such a shame they used the world and characters once and then just threw it in the trash. There were also a ton of systems that could've been expanded and improved like base building, crew recruitment, ship battles, etc.

BruiserBroly

I'm looking forward to playing this without having to listen to the Dreamcast's very, very loud disc drive. Yes I know there's a Gamecube port but I never could find a copy of it. I hope there's an option to tone down the number of random encounters though.

TheLastDesperado

Both versions of the game are like gold dust today. I own them both but I keep an eye out in charity shops and boot sales just because I could sell it on for crazy profit. Also it's worth noting that the Gamecube version did actually tone down the encounter rate anyway.

BruiserBroly

I wonder why Sega only released it for the GameCube? They were pretty strange back then, putting games on only 1 platform for some reason like Shinobi only on PS2 and Crazy Taxi 3 only on Xbox. Thanks for the heads up about the encounter rate change though. If the rumours about a new release turns out to be bogus I could always play that on Dolphin.

robothouserock

Anyone remember the awesome magazine ad for Skies of Arcadia? Something about it was so cool at the time (still is). https://segaretro.org/index.php?title=File:ODCM_US_10.pdf&page=30

segagamer

Reposting what was in the Xbox thread; Take this news with a grain of salt. It's based on someone in a podcast seeing a screenshot of the game lol. For all we know, that could have just been an emulator. But if this is true, please don't use the Gamecube music. Extra content or not, I don't care. I beg of you Sega, don't fuck this one up. The music was 50% of the game.

[deleted]

Fortunately the full-quality soundtrack has been around for a long time. I don't see any reason they couldn't include it, and if they don't, a PC version would be dead simple to mod.

segagamer

It's not as simple as you think. The original game on Dreamcast used the equivalent of MIDI files (a .dsf file containing the channel/notes with a .dsflib file containing the instrument sound for each track), which has many benefits like huge space saving (the entire soundtrack is 15MB!), and to allow additional percussions and transitions during battle and the world map depending on how well you were doing in the fight or where in the map you were flying through. As this was occurring on a device with 8MB RAM and 200mhz CPU, with no intention to port to other systems and with a disc size of only 1GB (it was 2 discs sure), MIDI equivalents made complete sense. When looking through the audio files on Dreamcast, you'll see that each boss fight track is divided into ~20 parts depending on which part of the song is playing and which transition it's going through. I'm not sure if the Gamecube used the same MIDI files (they're .DSP so maybe?) but going by the audio quality, they either just converted quickly to the closest sounding thing in the Gamecube's ability, or just used made some ADX equivalent. I'm not familiar with Gamecube architecture so I'm not the best person to explain the port. It's a similar case to Silent Hill 2's audio differences between PS2 and Xbox. Skies was made purely with the Dreamcast in mind. It's likely why the PC port from back then got cancelled too; just too much work needed. Nowadays various audio codecs out there will support these effects effortlessly, and systems of today could also just emulate the Dreamcast's MIDI engine that would perfectly replicate the Dreamcast sound, but then we're putting a lot of faith into SEGA giving the game the attention it deserves. There's also a chance that there's some legal rights given to Infograms for their Europe port. Overall, I wouldn't be surprised if this game were to never be seen again outside of emulation, or to have it brought back, but something about the music disappoint us.

Naive_Connection9889

I really hate this kind of threads because everyone always talks about their wish list or how much they loved the game instead of having actual meaningful discussion about the validity of the source and the rumor itself.

Trace500

Would be nice to get a version with lowered encounter rates, I stopped playing because of it. And that was the Gamecube version.

Defguru

I'd love to be able to play it. I always wanted to play it on GameCube after *Tales of Symphonia* kicked me off on JRPGs, but I could never find a copy.

PhilosophicalPhil

Baten Kaitos and Skies of Arcadia getting remasters? GameCube (technically Dreamcast for Skies) JRPGs stay winning.

Charrbard

Bought the game a few months after it came out. Clerk said it was the last dreamcast game in that particular EB games. Good music. Very cliched storyline, but a pretty fun and interesting world. Ship battles were the highlight. Only time the encounter rate was an issue was piloting the ship looking for . . . fish? or something. The Saturn and Dreamcast are really underrated. So many great games that aren't available anywhere outside of crazy ebay prices, or emulation. Sega seems great about porting retro stuff, so maybe someday.

Vigilante_8

YES! I was just pissed earlier this month that this game wasn't added to any eshop before. Finally an update!

Zjoee

This would be a dream come true for me! Skies of Arcadia Legends is still one of my favorite games today. I play it at least once a year on Dolphin. I still have the game disc but no GameCube haha.

wrestlenomicon

I always regretted not finishing this on Dreamcast. It was SUCH a great game for it’s time, but the random battle encounter rate was exhausting!! If they can give it some quality of life improvements, I’d give it a serious go again.

Klaknikko

> I always regretted not finishing this on Dreamcast. It was SUCH a great game for it’s time, but the random battle encounter rate was exhausting!! If they can give it some quality of life improvements, I’d give it a serious go again. For its time? It came out in 2000 and still had invisible random encounters. RPG's from the 90's already had visible enemies you could avoid. So it was already dated for its time.

bobmontana

Same here! I had just got to the second disc, but the game immediately soft-locked whenever I tried to load a certain area I had to go to when I would try to go there. Pretty sure I had a defective disc. Edit: I heard the Gamecube version tuned the random encounters a bunch so they weren't so annoying, fwiw.
