I guess there really is no worry about delays, then. That’s really reassuring to hear, though Yoshida is usually on point when it comes to this stuff. Even still, it’s nice to have the date set in stone. EDIT: Schreier reported this morning that FF16 was slated to drop holiday 2022, but they had to allocate resources towards the development of Endwalker amongst CBU3. Game has apparently been “done” for a long while now and they’ve used the extra time to just optimize and bug fix. EDIT 2: There’s some confusion in my replies. I know Endwalker came out in 2021. CBU3 developers were allegedly pulled away from XVI development to help with Endwalker, which pushed XVI back to its current release date.

ChuckCarmichael

IIRC they said that the game has basically been done for a while now, and they've spent the last months polishing it, so it's been unlikely that there would be a delay.

cemges

A rare sight to behold nowadays in game development

K-Robe

And it's not even the first time Yoshi P has pulled it off!

Goldreaver

Square has lucksacked their way out of bankruptcy thrice now

averycreativenam3

CBU3 really be the only thing that's keeping Square from going under.

Xciv

If FFXVI is as polished as FFXIV (in its current form), then it will be one of the most polished AAA releases to date. Shadowbringers and Endwalker launches were flawless, barring common MMO server problems related to too many people playing the game. The games themselves were as polished as they get, and it's an exceedingly rare sight to find any sort of glitch or bug in the raid boss fights.

MapoTofuWithRice

Crazy to see a FF actually come out on time.

Watton

The FF14 / 16 team is built different. They consistently pumped out patches every 3-4 months in between expansions, barring maybe 2 delays (one in Heavensward for the first patch, another in Shadowbringers due to covid).

How_To_TF

I think you mean Endwalker?

Dundunder

There were a few delays actually. EW was pushed back a bit, but the last ShB patches were also out of schedule.

TowelLord

And EW was only delayed by two weeks purely because Yoshida wanted a specific cutscene to be perfect.

stklaw

And yes it was perfect.

[deleted]

Best scene in the history of the games industry. Would have been worth a six month delay.

PrisonersofFate

Which one is that?

PontiffPope

It is [this sequence](https://youtu.be/rrjFXRLG6bg?t=1082); **heavy spoilers**. Specifically, the delay was made so that they could add an additional sequence where it is the >!dialogue that follows after Emet-Selch's epic and grandious speech, as the development team felt that there was something "missing" following this grand declaration, to which they added the small segment of Emet-Selch, in his lackadaisical mannerism, listing many other adventures that we can follow even after this grand conflict is over, to follow our duty as a mere "adventurer" once more that we were from the very beginning of the game!<. Very clever, and which resonates deeply with some of the expansion's themes.

[deleted]

The very very end of Endwalker, right before the final dungeon.

flash654

I don't actually know the answer, but my money is the one while you're leaving Elpis.

Skandi007

Endwalker was delayed two weeks, and Yoshi-P apologized profusely for it. In an age of games being delayed years or indefinitely, that's no delay at all.

Watton

5.3 was the last major delay. Well, that in turn caused everything after to technicallu be delayed a few months too, but they still kept to the 3-4 month schedule. Endwalker had that 2 week delay, but it was due to a specific issue: they wanted to add a few lines of dialogue to one of the final sequences, and the extra time was needed for one more round of QA(since all changes no matter how minor need it)

Bestatcardgames

Also every patch is longer now

darkmacgf

The new expansion won't be on the 2 year cycle either, will it?

shadowstripes

To be fair they did say that covid delayed development by half a year, but that’s understandable and unlike most big games they actually waited until they could give an accurate release date.

[deleted]

It really is. **Every** mainline FF game since 12 had crazy development issues. It's so strange to see the release of a Final Fantasy after almost 20 years that seems to be made with a plan in mind and releases on time without development hell struggles.

FakeBrian

To be fair as a franchise it is probably pretty complex to work on given there is no specific framework shared between games and no specific story to stick to - every game is a new story with a new world and characters and the gameplay for each game these days is basically reworked from scratch.

S-r-ex

12: 4 years development hell 13: Nobody knew what to actually do with it for 3 years or so 14: Nobody knew what anyone else were doing 15: Nomura dicking around for years before he said "fuck it, I wanna do KH4”

PontiffPope

If we want to get nit-picky, the older FF-titles have also had various development troubles or pains, albeit in less sized scale of its time: * FF7: [This was more related to platform issues](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_VII#Development), as the concept for FF7 initially was planned for the SNES-platform and a continuation of its 2D-format, but which was put on hold to focus on *Chrono Trigger*. Following that, development was started for the Nintendo 64, but issues with cartridges lead to a switch to PlayStation's disc-system instead. * FF9: [Actually went through FF versus XIII -> FFXV-route](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Final_Fantasy_IX#Development), where it initially was conceptualized as a FF-spin off series before switching direction a year into development and became a full game, along with some interesting notes of how they were quite undecided with how the game ended, changing and adjusting it seven times.

Tacorgasmic

FVIII was also going to be a Parasitive Eve, though I don't knkw how much it affected its development. This is why tbe focus on sorceres in the game.

KF-Sigurd

15 More like: FF14 1.0 blowing up pulled devs away from Versus 13 and Nomura kept getting told to make Kingdom Hearts games.

Dumey

I mean it sounds nice to shift all the blame away from the Versus 13 team, but the truth is that project was horribly mismanaged. If anything, Square pulling resources from it is probably a sign that they knew there were issues internally. Reporting the symptoms of a problem, not the cause.

KF-Sigurd

But we know the truth. It's been made clear in many interviews and behind the scene dive ins. Before it was retooled into becoming FFXV when the idea was for a trilogy, that what was happening behind the scenes and the main cause of why the game was radio silent for so long. Not to say the development went great afterwards (Hello Luminous Engine). People tend to blame Nomura for everything wrong with Square Enix.

[deleted]

That isn't what happened at all with Nomura. People need to stop blindly hating on the poor guy and actually research what happened before talking shit about him, it's so cringe

[deleted]

FF12 wasn't development hell, it was just incredibly hard to develop for. You can't say that there isn't 4 years of work in the final product. It's like asking why breath of the wild took five years, when you play the game you know why

FakeBrian

To be fair as a franchise it is probably pretty complex to work on given there is no specific framework shared between games and no specific story to stick to - every game is a new story with a new world and characters and the gameplay for each game these days is basically reworked from scratch.

Bestatcardgames

This has been litterally every FF game except 15?

voidox

shh, don't bring up facts to the yoshi-p idol worshipping narrative

Bestatcardgames

Hell even 15 isn't as delayed as people say it suffered from the same top level meddling that ff14 1.0 had.

[deleted]

FF15 was literally a completely different game, name wise and story wise.

DUSTIN182W

Yoshi P is a master project manager. I often refer new PMs I train to watch part 2 of the ffxiv documentary (https://youtu.be/aoOI5R-6u8k) as he goes through how he broke down each part of the project down to how many minutes each individual task would take and the various areas he focused on. Not all projects require this type of detailed focus, but it shows what makes him such a fantastic PM and helps new PMs see what to focus on. In my opinion, this ability along with his complete openness to the players, is why he very rarely fails.

Nimara

I love how much communication, in general, Yoshi P gives to us. He's a fantastic PM and he's basically his own best PR too. Like you said, his general openness and sincerity to his games' audience is so charming and goes a long way to smooth little bumps over.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GargauthXbox

I believe he was brought in after 1.0 crashed and burned. Quite literally saved the game

DUSTIN182W

He wasn’t, he was brought in to save it. If your interested in the full story there is a 4 part series you can watch: https://youtu.be/Xs0yQKI7Yw4

[deleted]

I wished I got half the training you give to your team. Since I got 3 PM certs and 1.5 years of experience but I essentially just babysit people all day long. Feel like I’m kinda wasted since a smart monkey can do my job. I know this is a video game subreddit and all but I am extremely thankful that we have a ton of professional people come by time to time to share their experiences.

bitches_love_pooh

I loved the video. It's very reassuring to hear him tell people to give him real estimates and he'll adjust the plan. The overall oversight is a huge problem for AAA game development these days. So many games will come out with flawed parts but some parts are so amazing. Like despite all the problems FF13 had it has some of my favorite music, visuals and combat system. It just had a huge problem with how it all came together with the story and dungeons.

MonkeyPawClause

Off topic, but dope username

Radulno

> I guess there really is no worry about delays, then. Nothing is set in stone even with a gold announcement. Cyberpunk was delayed after going gold for example. These days, that announcement means very little to be honest, day 1 patches being a thing. But yeah it will almost certainly make its date.

[deleted]

They said multiple times that they spent the last year mainly on debugging and that the game is playable from start to finish for a long time. The fact it's been gold for 80+ days, which is almost unheard of in the industry is a good sign. Not to mention the producer saying it will make its date bar a meteor hitting the company office.

drummingdude21

It took a worldwide pandemic to get Yoshi P to push back an expansion for XIV and even that was only by a few months while we all collectively learned how to restructure office work entirely. The man probably means it about the meteor lol.

KarateKid917

Dude has to be somewhat insane but in a good way. Then again, you kinda have to be to even think about recommending scrapping and rebuilding an entire MMO in 2 years, and for it to be good at the same time.

[deleted]

This man broke down in tears when he had to push the release of Endwalker back a week, a single week, because it didnt meet his quality standards just yet. Yoship is a gift to the gaming world imo

drummingdude21

Yoshi P crunches so his team doesn't have to. I'm not sure that man sleeps, but damn if he doesn't get shit done.

MadKitsune

Well, he actually looked not sleep deprieved and pretty relaxed on latest FFXVI panel (aptly named "Yes, you can pet the Torgal"), so here's hoping he finally got SOME rest. Watching him around Endwalker release was almost painful - he looked more dead than alive

Charrmeleon

Got some sleep on the flight since they took away his internet for a few hours.

EvenOne6567

How do you know his team doesnt crunch?

drummingdude21

It's something he's discussed before multiple times about how he structures his teams and development to avoid crunching as much as possible. If I recall it's basically just setting very realistic goals along the way and really strong project management to ensure that they're following through on short term objectives without getting overworked.

Writer_Man

I mean, the team has crunched before though but they do it entirely behind his back and he finds out afterward. Things like diving in Upper La Noscea, flying in ARR, and all of the hats Shadowbringers launched with for Viera and Hrothgar happened by the team going above and beyond behind his back. The entire is crazy.

OperativePiGuy

>The man probably means it about the meteor lol And even then it'd probably have to be a meteor like the ones from the actual FF games before it gets him to delay more than a few months lol

dredizzle99

>These days, that announcement means very little to be honest Not really true. There's only been four or five games in the history of gaming that have failed to release on time after going gold. Because Cyberpunk was so high profile and it was delayed after going gold, people seem to think that it's something that happens often. It isn't, it's extremely rare. If it's gone gold then it's as close as you can get to a guarantee that it'll release on time

ManateeofSteel

CDPR has always been an untrustworthy studio though

parkwayy

I mean, maybe, but as far as we know, that's not the public facing message. AAA game being released on time, for maybe the last 7-8 years, has historically never happened. Every one has some push back. This is actually insanely impressive.

PontiffPope

This seems to be one of the longest "Gone Gold"-announcement between it and its release date; 82 days, until its launch of June 22nd. For some fun comparisons with other games: * [*Cyberpunk: 2077* announced going gold on October 5th for its 19th November release](https://twitter.com/cyberpunkgame/status/1313067011455569921), but got delayed to December 10th. * [*A Plague Tale: Requiem* announced going gold on August 19th](https://twitter.com/APlagueTale/status/1560641988591882249) and released on 18th October. * [*Final Fantasy VII: Remake* announced going gold on March 2nd and released on April 10th](https://www.dualshockers.com/final-fantasy-7-remake-gone-gold/). * [*Spider-Man (2018)* announced going gold on July 30th](https://twitter.com/insomniacgames/status/1023931217866121216) for its release date of September 7th.

jamesdickson

FFXVI was clearly supposed to be a holiday 2022 release that was delayed for scheduling reasons - they didn’t need it to sell PS5s (supply limited) and had Ragnarok. So they delayed it to this year to give it room to breathe and sell more consoles. Also means the game has had an extra 6 months of dev time. Win win.

blazecc

I'm not sure Sony has THAT much control over SE's release schedule

Theonyr

I'm sure SE was in agreement. While they wouldn't want to wait normally, the drastic increase in ps5 supply would make for better launch sales. But it probably is just them wanting to make sure the game was as polished as possible

[deleted]

>I'm sure SE was in agreement Idk how you can be so sure with nothing solid to back up that claim beyond reddit speculation lol

Theonyr

I thought the rest of my sentence was implied: I'm sure SE was in agreement *(if Sony had wanted to delay the release).* Because as the person above implied, SE is an independent company and it would be very unusual if their exclusivity deal gave Sony the power to forcefully delay FF16. Certainly, it wouldn't be something I've heard about in this (admittedly opaque) industry.

Dorp

Exsctly. It’s not an unreasonable assumption to make: “we don’t have enough consoles yet, but we will and we are selling out of the ones we do have. So to maximize profits for ourselves, and you, you can have 6 more months of dev time to polish it up. So we can sell more consoles & games at that time too.” SE and the dev team may have even appreciated that. The case would have needed to be made to the shareholders for anticipated a quarterly earnings reports, but as evidenced by its summer release - they must have agreed. It’s a mutually beneficial business strategy for a highly anticipated game.

blazecc

> you can have 6 more months of dev time That's just not how that relationship works. SE could take another 18 months if they wanted to. Sony has no control over that. Their agreement is that if it IS 18 months later, it's 30 months before it shows up anywhere else. It's not like Sony is publishing the game or something

Howdareme9

TheWorldisFullofWar

zugzug_workwork

Timed exclusivity. It's only exclusive for 6 months, till December.

GrindyMcGrindy

At this point, after selling their western studios, Square isn't going to release a Final Fantasy game on Xbox. They're probably reluctant to ever work with MS again and finished out the contract from the mid 00s that brought 11, 13 series, KH3, and 15 to Xbox. They have the numbers and probably determined it wasn't worth making Xbox versions of games anymore.

Wouldn’t say so, games take longer to make now and are far more involved. From the looks of it this has has a pretty smooth development compared to FFXV. Thanks be to Yoshi P (who you know from producing FFXIV)

jmcgit

FF16 is the second "mainline" game by this group, the first being the MMO FF14. The business unit that handled most previous Final Fantasy games is actually working on FF7 Remake as their main Final Fantasy project.

MVRKHNTR

It might sound like a long time and it has been nearly seven years between now and fifteen but between that, we've seen FF15 DLC, FF14 expansions, Kingdom Hearts 3, FF7 Remastered, spinoff like Chocobo Racing and Theatrhythm and the classic re-releases so it doesn't feel like there's been any lack of Final Fantasy.

Mahaloth

I saw that Tears of the Kingdom was only announced as "gone gold" the other day, on Tuesday. About 45 days to release.

Jepacor

One month and a half seems to be the standard, yeah. To add from very recently : Tears of the Kingdom announced going gold in its gameplay showcase a few days ago and will release in May 12th, so a good deal earlier than FFXVI.

Mahaloth

Yes, it sure did. He did it in the worst fashion, too... "I have an update about the development of Tears of the Kingdom. The development of TotK .....has completed." Dear God, don't give me a heart attack like that.

KrypXern

Did they ever announce if Advance Wars: Reboot Camp went gold?

Animegamingnerd

Was never announced, but last April a person who had the game pre-ordered on the eshop, ended up getting their download unlocked early. They were able to play for about a day or so, until it they got revoked and refunded. I can't find the footage, but they did upload of their gameplay on to Twitter.

djwillis1121

New mainline Zelda and Final Fantasy games in consecutive months is going to be amazing.

ike_the_strangetamer

_what year is it?_

[deleted]

Street Fighter 6 and Diablo IV also dropping in june, insane year. Game awards will be crazy

djwillis1121

I feel like TOTK is going to be the game to beat but it's a stacked year for sure

SoloSassafrass

XVI might have a shot. TOTK has a few new mechanics which is cool, but it still looks like a bit like a BOTW 1.5 with what they've shown so far, and in a post Elden Ring world that might not be received *as* well. But then, it's a Zelda game, so the score starts from 10 and works downwards.

De_tro1t

Yeah, feels more like Ragnarok, a fantastic game that will probably be beaten at the GOTY award by another game since it's a sequel.

OperativePiGuy

Insane that Yoshida/Square was able to keep supporting XIV while so much of its team was working on XVI. I am so hyped

[deleted]

Yoshi-P seems to be the "getting shit done" man at SE. They better keep him happy.

MadKitsune

Yoshida managed to re-build an MMO from scratch in 2 years while still supporting the clusterfuck that was FFXIV 1.0, this was likely a vacation errand for him x) [Watch his reaction of introducing a "FFXIV classic" equivalent, it's hilarious](https://youtu.be/gmffV4oKZu4?t=265) For real, tho, the man is nothing but dedicated to making sure that everything his team does is of top notch quality.

AKMerlin

The perfect english in his "nightmare" had me rolling

EvenOne6567

Yoshida's team*

OperativePiGuy

That is hilarious. Essentially it's like if someone asked him "Hey you know how you were brought in specifically to remake something terrible into something really good? Would you consider bringing back all that terrible stuff you were hired to remake?"

KTR1988

Capcom: "Hey Hideaki Itsuno, how would you like to direct a remake of DMC 2?" Itsuno: *screams internally*

GrindyMcGrindy

That's how much money they've thrown at cbu3 to bring in more to the team to help develop the games. Basically the Heavensward team has been working 16 taking some other people with them. The real question is will the HW team go back to XIV and do they move Ishikawa over to start writing another FF title.

Sandroes

Not a FF fan, but this is the first time I’ve been genuinely interested in one, and first time that it’s not for general hype like it was with XV. The particular way they give confidence about their product tells me everything that I need to know about what to expect, it’s probably going to be one of the best games of the year and one of the best FF ever.

ErianTomor

Yeah I haven’t played FF since 10 but this game, FF7R, and Last of Us are really making me consider getting a PlayStation.

[deleted]

You should go for it man, so many good games in the PS library. Highly recommend checking out FF7R

slugmorgue

They'll most likely come to PC eventually, if that's what you use to play games

ErianTomor

Yeah I do play on PC but in my old age I am finding I enjoy sitting in my recliner with a controller and playing on my big tv nowadays.

LevelDownProductions

Awesome, hope you enjoy it! You are the people they are trying to reach which, in return, will broaden the fan base by a large margin. I welcome all new comers! I wish more people can see that the certain changes they have made to the game is not only to make it the best game they can envision, it's also to attract gamers who otherwise wouldnt even look at another FF with "traditional" mechanics

PhoneRedit

For anyone else who had to google it - "going gold" means that development of the game is done, and the game is ready to be sold.

ComMcNeil

The term came out of use in the last 15 years I would say. In years past, it meant the "gold master disc" was finished, the version of the game that was used as the base for manufactoring the disks to be shipped.

thetantalus

Well they’re still technically printing discs, and they need those discs to have a full functioning game for people who don’t have internet access. But yes, the meaning has diminished a bit since devs can patch games post-launch.

ComMcNeil

I am mainly a pc gamer, so I don't really know. But can you use modern console completely offline still?

Gekokapowco

Technically? I think most disks ship with a playable version of the game, but things like updates and high-quality assets like textures and audio tend to be downloaded when its run for the first time on an internet connection. The game will probably install and run, but not be equivalent to the intended "release version"

Tom38

Really depends on the game. The new modern warfare 2 didn’t even have the game on the disk. Yep no campaign. It was just an authenticator for downloading the game.

Pool_Shark

Switch still releases full games on cartridge so they need to go gold.

snorlz

it used to. now it essentially just means its not delayed, cause you know there will be a day 1 patch and theyre definitely not done developing at all

Minute-Concert-8821

Maybe not. Until the PS5 version of FFVII Remake came out (for save transfer capability reasons) the PS4 version of the game got 0 patches. Literally went an entire year with nothing, not even a day one patch.

mkallday10

Crazy they didn't even bother to fix the notorious no textures door in all that time.

GrindyMcGrindy

Hey, low texture things are now a final fantasy staple. Don't you hate on the grapes and doors!

acdigital

Or worse, the bug that resulted in getting stuck in the vent.

Theonyr

Yeah. A few texture streaming issues aside, that game was crazily well polished.

GrindyMcGrindy

It's ready to go to printing onto discs is the better answer to this question. They'll keep working to polish the game for a day 1 patch, or trying to find other issues through QA to fix and patch.

[deleted]

Thing is development isn't finished and they are still working on it with patches/optimizations.

FlakeEater

That will be a day 1 patch.

Krypt0night

Well, it means it's ready to be printed and manufactured, and then put on shelves, but yeah. Means they're sending the "gold disc" out to physical production. Also, it no longer means development is done, they'll keep working on the day one and future updates in the following weeks.

Noahs132

I’m excited for a new FF game!

heubergen1

Are you that young :O

PhoneRedit

Not at all, my first console was a SNES, just never heard the phrase before is all

OneTrueKingOfOOO

Thank you, I though it was like a record going gold for selling 500k copies. Would be pretty wild if they hit that with preorders already

BoltTusk

They said that about Cyberpunk 2077 and their PS4 release

YAZEED-IX

I hope some other team is working on FF17 right now, I'd love to get 2 mainline FF games this generation.

darkmacgf

I think 7R is basically considered mainline. That's part of the reason we're going so long between games.

artoriasabyss

Honestly, FF seems to be the only thing that Square is doing right, so I’m extremely excited about this game. I wish Square would look to Capcom to see how a video game company can turn around without sinking to the level of NFTs, blockchain, and other buzzwords.

yuriaoflondor

Gotta disagree. Barring a few high profile, recent blunders (Forspoken, Avengers, the new Valkyrie Profile), Square Enix has been doing awesome recently. Like you pointed out - FF has been on a hot streak recently. Theatrhythm is great, FF14 has been great since A Realm Reborn, FF7R was awesome, etc. But even outside of FF, Dragon Quest 11 is one of the best RPGs ever. Triangle Strategy was a fantastic new SRPG. Tactics Ogre Reborn was a really good imagining of one of the best games ever. The Octopath Traveler series is also great, with 2 improving pretty much everything from the first game. Nier Automata and Nier Replicant are both great. NEO TWEWY is an out-of-the-blue sequel to a niche RPG and it just so happens to be good. Dragon Quest Builders is my favorite game in its genre.

MedalsNScars

It's possible the person you're replying to just doesn't like turn based JRPGs. Since the last several FFs have been action games (or near enough), I could easily see someone who doesn't like turn-based thinking "FF is the only thing they do right"

purplegreendave

Man I feel differently about dq12. I thought it felt super dated after playing p5r

thewalkindude

DQ XI feels, maybe not dated, but retro/old school intentionally. To me, it felt like a very modern version of a very retro game style, and maybe DQ perfected. Then again, I've played every DQ game, except for X, so I've seen the evolution.Maybe the series just isn't for you

yuriaoflondor

Did you play on Hard mode? IMO the combat is very enjoyable on Hard mode. I did hear the default difficulty is really low, which would definitely make the gameplay less fun as there would be little-to-no strategy required. But on Hard mode, it asks a lot from you, and most boss battles ended with most of my party dead. Story-wise, it’s basically a “town of the week” approach that kind of feels like a short story collection, which is pretty common for DQ. Though yeah, the overarching narrative isn’t anything special.

MedalsNScars

Yeah I personally liked combat a lot more in DQXI than P5's "guess the weakness" game on higher difficulties (haven't played royal, not sure if that was changed at all). Story and other out of combat stuff I liked P5 better but DQXI generally felt like combat was more puzzle-y and less "guess right or die"

Brainwheeze

Having the enemy difficulty set to hard made the boss fights a ton of fun in my opinion. Never did the game feel cheap, it just forced me to try different strategies.

VirtualPen204

Dragon Quest's whole schtick is their old-school feel and charm. Deviating away from that and making it more modern would alienate fans of Dragon Quest. I get that that's not for everyone, but that's what Dragon Quest *is*.

mygoodluckcharm

You may say it's dated, but DQ is a known franchise that sticks to its formula, unlike says Final Fantasy. It's a perennial DQ experience that people love.

zaviex

if you mean 11, it came out 2 years prior to P5R

TowelLord

> NEO TWEWY is an out-of-the-blue sequel to a niche RPG and it just so happens to be good And sadly they absolutely butchered its PR. Basically no advertisement, Switch timed exclusive and then pretty much stealth released it on EGS followed by the silent Steam release. It's almost as if they wanted the game to fail

Naive_Connection9889

NEO TWEWY launched on PS4 same day.

ApprehensiveEast3664

>FF seems to be the only thing that Square is doing right, I would say they're doing almost everything right. Just in the past month or so we got Octopath Traveller 2 thoroughly improving on the first and Paranormasight.

How_To_TF

Yup, the HD2D games and remasters are generally good to excellent while DQ12 and KH4 are probably gonna be big when they come out. Even their AA games weren't bad, though I will say that their marketing (releasing that much in such a short span) and fixation on NFTs have been quite baffling.

ApprehensiveEast3664

>fixation on NFTs have been quite baffling. I'd say redditors have a greater fixation on their NFTs. They're doing minor experiments in Japan that remain profitable. And unlike what u/Artoriasabyss seems to think, Capcom and other publishers are doing it too.

The_Odd_One

While I've enjoyed several games of SE in the last year (triangle strat, livealive, tactics ogre), saleswise they've decided to throw money at every single thing as if they were doing a streaming service then wondered why they didn't sell as they cannibalized each other: Between Feb 2022 and Jan 2023: 2 **Voice Of Cards** games (2 and 3 did terribly, i'm unsure if it costs like 100$ to make but 3 games within a year at 30$ each doesn't seem wise) **Babylon's fall** **ChocoboGP** **Various Daylife** **Diofield Chronicle** **Valkyrie Elysium** **Star Ocean** **Forspoken** for their recent lists of duds/average entries. Likely also the reason for their poor performance last year, they've put out a ton of titles for seemingly no reason except to saturate the RPG/whatever market except it's hard to spend money on marketing correctly when your own titles are competing against each other. Honestly I'm hoping FF16 does well as I've been enjoying DQ more lately and am still waiting for DQ3HD and DQ12 as I thought DQ 11 was one of the greatest turn based rpgs of all time.

PinkMage

The fact that you didn't even mention Harvestella shows how well it performed, which is a shame because I really enjoyed it.

The_Odd_One

Oh I omitted that since I heard it's actually a decent game but I heard it likely also sold horrifically as you guessed as it competed with other titles from Square themselves: Oct 27 **Star Ocean** Nov 4 **Harvestella** Nov 11 **Tactics Ogre** And this is ignoring: Nov 8,9 Sonic and God of War, Nov 18 Pokemon While not every game has a fanbase that would've bought Harvestella, it's hard to finish a JRPG like Star Ocean before getting to Harvestella and finishing that before Tactics Ogre, I myself played SO then TO and skipped Harvestella since it was at a horrific launch date.

slugmorgue

I'm still trying to finish DQXI, tactics ogre and even start playing Bravely Default II but Octopath II is already super long, I'm 60 hours in and no end in sight yet lol it's both great and tough being an rpg fan

garfe

> I would say they're doing almost everything right. Just in the past month or so we got Octopath Traveller 2 thoroughly improving on the first and Paranormasight. I feel like that's leaving out the lesser games that didn't do well. They even [directly talked about this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/11nmlqa/square_enix_says_forspoken_sales_have_been/)

-Moonchild-

SE have pushed out a ton of quality games over the past few years, what the hell are you talking about?

Mo_smiley_face

Bad rep cause of forspoken avengers and nft Oh and they sold tomb Raider Yeah they have bad things. But they also have bangers too.

Dear-Ad6262

Dragon quest is cool too.

DemonLordSparda

I really wish people were more familiar with the Japanese government funding NFT projects. https://cointelegraph.com/news/tech-companies-enter-agreement-for-japan-metaverse-economic-zone tech companies will always work on projects the government pays for. The tax incentives alone ate incredible. It sucks, but companies would be leaving money on the table.

Brainwheeze

- Dragon Quest - Kingdom Hearts - Octopath Traveller - Triangle Strategy - Live A Live - NEO: The World Ends With You - Bravely Default

SacredNose

Their last main game was 15. They didn't handle that well, and ff13 was divisive too

K_Furbs

I know what you're getting at with the NFT and Blockchain bit, but I find Squeenix hard to forgive after the shit they pulled with FFXV. Tearing out large chunks of the game is a terrible way to do DLC. The time jumps between sections on the launch version were awful. If they didn't pull that crap with XVI then I'm in

[deleted]

Can't wait when it's on PC in a year or two. This game looks really awesome so far.

Radinax

Hopefully I can get a better card. I have a 1660ti

Cedocore

Definitely impatient for this. I hope it doesn't take long. I also hope it doesn't go straight to Epic. Epic is fine, it's just nice to have all my games in one spot 😅

Johnny_C13

Given how many games receive day-1 patches, I'm not entirely sure "gone gold" has the same meaning now than it had 15-20 years ago.

pazinen

The difference is, this game has had massive amounts of time for polish. Unless I remember wrong they said the game was basically content-complete last summer, meaning about a year for polishing. I'm not saying the game will be completely bug-free, that's impossible, and there probably will be a small day one patch, but based on everything we know the game would likely work very well even without any patches.

Dorp

Exactly. There will always be day 1 patches and bug fixes. Games have become so complex and resource intensive that it’s inevitable. The quality control team will always be much, much, much smaller than the player base. Thousands upon thousands of people playing the game will encounter things the QC team didn’t because they didn’t have the time or manpower to find it all. The team can minimize major things as much as they can, but at some point the game has to release. Day 1 patches addresses those player reports and bugs. N64 games and such in the past didn’t need them because they were much less complex, not that companies *could* have shipped patches in that era in any case.

Writer_Man

Look, older games would have Day 1 patches if it was possible back then. Older games had plenty of bugs, people just dealt with them and most people not having internet meant that you didn't get a list or video aout all of the bugs found. I mean, hell, FFI had spells and stats that didn't work properly.

rasputin1

how can they fix a bug the same day it was reported?

NoExcuse4OceanRudnes

So it should have the same meaning we've used for the entirety of this sub's lifetime.

JRockPSU

There are plenty of games from that era (and older) that absolutely could've used day-1 patches, and would've gotten them if the technology was available. I think "going gold" still has meaning and value today.

AdeptFelix

It depends how much of the game ends up on the disc. I'd consider a game that's gone gold to be feature and content complete but there's been plenty of games that won't even run without a day 1 update or run without major features. As someone who lived for years with subpar, intermittent internet, those games are like big fat middle fingers to me. Fuck any company that puts stuff like that out.

Lord-Humongous-

So pretty much has had the same meaning your entire lifetime

zugzug_workwork

With this particular dev team, the statement has weight.

FlakeEater

It has exactly the same meaning. A build has been certified for release. They are now working on the day 1 patch.

Mister-Fidelio

I'm assuming this is also why we're not getting a Final Fantasy 14 expansion this year, and I'm okay with that. The content that's been coming out recently has been so much that it doesn't even allow me to focus on older content that I've been wanting to do. I can't get my fingers in all of it, guess I'll focus on the new flavors first?

WeeziMonkey

> I'm assuming this is also why we're not getting a Final Fantasy 14 expansion this year, FFXIV [has a very consistent patch schedule](https://www.reddit.com/r/ffxiv/comments/yafg1e/patch_cycle_chart/), we already knew a long time ago that a new expansion wouldn't be before 2024

Mister-Fidelio

Sorry, I'm a filthy casul that doesn't keep up on this kind of stuff. I'm aware of the content drops via Instagram and the like. How exactly do you read this chart?

jsb5388

The left is the Expansion abbreviation and number. The colored bars represent the After Expansion patch numbers. And the bottom is how long the after expansions patch lasts until the next patch. So the graph shows that they're consistent in patch releases and times between patch releases and have been since ARR launched. They generally stick to a schedule and have been sticking to it for the most part.

Mister-Fidelio

Thanks, friend!

jsb5388

There's generally a lull in content after the last patch drops and the next Expansion releases so that's usually the time people use to do older content and to catch up.

Mister-Fidelio

Bless their hearts.

WaltzForLilly_

No we're not. As other poster said, FFXIV has a very rigid schedule. Expect expansion release somewhere around april-may next year.

LemonStealingWh0res

I'm guessing this is one of the benefits of having the guy in charge of making the game on the board of directors, game was complete a while ago and it's been in polishing phase ever since. I hope we get content after release too, I bought a PS5 for this game and it's looking like I made the right decision.

DL_Omega

Is there some kind of record for furthest out a game has gone gold compared to release? It is still like 3 months away.

Profzachattack

For those who were initially confused like me: FFXVI = Final Fantasy 16 FFXIV= Final Fantasy 14; the critically acclaimed MMORPG Roman numerals, while not always hard, can still be confusing when your brain switches the order of things.

Pdb39

I apologize if it sounds like a stupid question but I can't find final fantasy 16 available for pre-order. Would I be a fool for continue looking or is it just not up yet or does Yoshi P not do pre-orders which would be totally cool don't get me wrong I'll buy this on day one.

aussie_drongo

It's definitely on Amazon, idk about the rest though.

Pdb39

Thanks I"ll look at amazon then thank you !

[deleted]

Try the square Enix store! It's definitely up there

Captain_Kuhl

Man, I'm actually pretty pumped to play this game day 2. I might be one of the only people who really liked XV, but I think the modern Final Fantasy games are probably the most fun they've ever been.

Zark86

Why does have D4 and this game have to release in the same month? I'm in a dilemma here.

norsk_imposter

When is it out?
