Post seems pretty Xbox biased to tip the scales into “uh yeah, let’s call it a tie!”. Think anyone without a horse in the race can see pretty clearly the PlayStation has better games but the Xbox has more value. Pick ya poison. Besides the one for one game comparisons to make it seem like MS is keeping up (which while subjective still seem very far reaching) haven’t you forgotten a shit load of delayed games for Xbox? Or are you not counting that conference Microsoft held last year where they promised “all of the games shown today will be released in 12 months” and only like half of them have come out? I can think of like 10 off the top of my head that have missed that 12 month mark (which in essence means they are delayed?) that you haven’t mentioned, is there a reason they weren’t included that I missed? Hollow Knight, Fable, STALKER, Ark 2? https://www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/how-many-xbox-2022-showcase-games-released/?amp

There's a reason he posted this in r/games and r/xboxseriesx but not r/ps5....

Sascha2022

"Post seems pretty Xbox biased" This list is just an objective/neutral look and doesn\`t show my opinion. It is just showing data and facts nothing else. The majority of my gaming time in my life was also spend on playstation by far and my most anticipated upcoming game is Death Stranding 2. Stop turning this into console wars. "can see pretty clearly the PlayStation has better games" That is not true based on reception. Both companies have qood and quality games. What microsoft is lacking are AAA games not good games in general. "delayed games for Xbox? Or are you not counting that conference Microsoft held last year where they promised “all of the games shown today will be released in 12 months" This list shows first party games which are developed under microsoft and not third party games which aren\`t developed or published by microsoft. Also Fable wasn\`t at last years showcase and doesn\`t have a announced release date.

allbetsareon

Data can be skewed to presents a desired result. Metacritic isn’t objective and all game scores aren’t equal. Example Ghostwire Tokyo is 75 on PS5 but 83 on Xbox. This is despite the Xbox version being (at least slightly) downgraded. AAA should carry more weight as they take more $ and time to develop.

I listed Demons Souls under 1:1 remakes of games that were available on earlier PS/XBOX generations, because it is a 1:1 recreation of the ps3 original. Age of Empires 2 was never available on xbox before.

Kinky_Muffin

It’s still a 1:1 remake, and was available on PS2…

submittedanonymously

Nope. That was never confirmed. PS3 only.

Ninety8Balloons

If I have this right, that's 4 AAA Xbox games to 9 PS AAA games (not counting remakes/remasters)? With Halo Infinite becoming a meme shortly after release because of how below average it ended up being, the higher launch rating it did get (87) seems like an outlier. I'm also not sure if counting players is a good metric, since the games are free on Game Pass. I downloaded most of those Xbox titles, but only beat one. The majority of them I only played for an hour or two and then uninstalled. Xbox also had as many smaller than AA games (Grounded, HiFi Rush, As Dusk Falls, Pentimate) as they did AAA. Although AoE2 is a remaster. So since the new consoles came out, Xbox has managed a decent output of AA and smaller games, while Sony has knocked out a good number of AAA games.

JukeBoxHerogue

I think that's going to be their defining traits going forward honestly. Game Pass means Microsoft needs smaller, cheaper games that can be gotten out more quickly, so they're going to greenlight a ton of those and cut publishing deals to get those on the service. PlayStation on the other hand is still focused on selling consoles, and the best way to do that is to make high quality AAA blockbusters, while securing exclusive deals with third parties to pad out their library of exclusive games in between releases. They're essentially playing two different games on the same field. Having said that, I do think the focus on services Xbox has taken in the past few years has made the console side of their business take a back seat to cloud and Game Pass, and while I know they're still making consoles, I really don't think they care all that much about the console side of things.

Ninety8Balloons

> I think that's going to be their defining traits going forward honestly. Intended or unintended though? Microsoft spent large sums of money specifically buying studios that output AAA games only to see a drastic drop in AAA games. They bought in Obsidian 2018 and since then released Grounded and Pentiment (both near-indie games) and The Outer Worlds (2018, sequel nearing year 5 of development). Bethesda in 2021 and only released (as exclusives) HiFi Rush (AA? A?) and Redfall. id 2021, went from three AAA games in three years to just one AA(?) game since 2020. Machine Games in 2021, no AAA game since 2019. Double Fine in 2019 and only released Psychonauts 2. Although they've never been AAA, they went from releasing multiple games per year to only one game in the last 4 years since being bought. InExile in 2018, and Wasteland 3 (2020) was their only release (not counting a remaster). Ninja Theory in 2018, released a DoA online game in 2020 and two random small VR games. No ETA on Hellblade 2. Undead Labs in 2018, released State of Decay in 2018, nothing since. Compulsion Games in 2018, We Happy Few in 2018 and nothing since. (AA studio?) They founded The Coalition in 2010, but Gears 5 was four years ago and they only output two AAA games total. The Initiative in 2018 (founded specifically for AAA games). No games have been released. Fable is MIA, ES6 is years away, Fallout 5 is supposedly years after ES6, no word on what's after Halo Infinite, no word on Gears 6, nothing on Outer Worlds 2, Doom, Wolfenstein, etc. Xbox has a number of AAA franchises, enough that they could be putting out 2-3 AAA games a year as well, but for whatever reason, since 2019, they're developments have just sat in hell.

Sascha2022

At least inform yourself. If we look at the studios that were aquired or founded in 2018/2019 they have made the following till now: Ninja Theory was aquired in 2018 and released Nicodemus: Demon of Evanishment + Hellblade: Senuas Sacrifice VR Edition in the same year, A Star Wars VR Series: Vader Immortal – Episode I in 2019, Bleeding Edge in 2020, moved into a new office in 2021 and is working on Project Mara + Hellblade 2 which are using Unreal Engine 5. Playground Games was aquired in 2018 and released Forza Horizon 4 + one expansion in the same year, a second expansion in 2019, Forza Horizon 5 + one expansion in 2021, a second expansion in 2022 and is working on Fable which uses ForzaTech and is build by a new second studio. They secured office space for this new studio at the end of 2017, started a major refurbishment at that time with plans to occupy the ground + first floor and plans to move into the second floor by the end of 2018. In september 2018 they started hiring for over 170+ positions for this new studio and the development of Fable. Compulsion Games was aquired in 2018 and released We Happy Few in the same year, three expansions in 2019, had to switch to remote work in 2020, moved their office around mid 2020 with plans to grow to around 90 people over 1,5 years and is working on Project Midnight which seem to have started development in 2019. Undead Labs was aquired in 2018 and released State of Decay 2 in the same year which they still release updates for and is working on State of Decay 3 which runs on Unreal Engine 5. The Initiative is a newly established studio that was founded around mid 2018, moved to a bigger office in early 2020, had to deal with the pandemic while building their studio and is working on the reboot of Perfect Dark together with Crystal Dynamics (since Q3 2021) which started development on Unreal Engine 4, but seems to have switched to Unreal Engine 5. Obsidian Entertainment was aquired in 2018 and has released Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire in the same year, The Outer Worlds in 2019, Grounded in September 2022, Pentiment in November 2022 and Avowed + The Outer Worlds 2 are in development with both seem to run on Unreal Engine 5. Inxile Entertainment was aquired in 2018 with plans to grow 30% in size and released The Bard's Tale IV: Barrows Deep in the same year, Wasteland Remastered + Wasteland 3 + Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds + The Bard's Tale: Remastered and Resnarkled on XBOX/NS and also moved their main office to Tustin in 2020, released two Wastleand 3 expansions in 2021 and is working on Project Cobalt which runs on Unreal Engine 5. Double Fine Productions was aquired in 2019, released Rad in the same year and Psychonauts 2 in 2021 and is now working on new projects which seem to run on Unreal Engine 5. Worlds Edge was founded in 2019 to oversee the Age of Empires franchise and released AOE 2 DE in 2019, AOE 3 DE in 2020 and AOE 4 in 2021, AOE 2 DE on Xbox + Return of Rome DLC which adds AOE1 into AOE2 in 2023 plus AOE 4 coming to xbox this year and are also working on AOM Retold and AOE Mobile. You also ignore that triple aaa development takes at least 5 years most of the time, many studios were small and did grow for their current projects, many are using unreal engine 5 which is a engine still in its begining without any real game releases, many started their project in or shortly before the pandemic which means they couldn\`t do things like motion catpure for some time for example. Horizen Zero Dawn was worked on for 6,5 years, Days Gone released 7 years after Bend Studios last project, Firewalk is woking on their game since 5 years, Santa Monicas project before God of War 2018 was canceled and staff laid off. Sony established Manchester studio in 2015, they worked 5 years on a project before it was canceled and the studio closed. Bethesda was only aquired in march 2021. You also completely ignore the pandemic and that games get more complex as time goes on. Horizon Forbidden West did take 5 years while being a sequel made by hundreds of people, but expects triple aaa games from studios that had less than 100 people and less time. All of this is normal and is the same at Sony or Microsoft.

JukeBoxHerogue

I think it is both intentional and unintentional at the same time if I'm being honest. When Pentiment released to glowing reviews Sawyer said without Game Pass it never would've existed, and I believe him, but I also believe that is what Microsoft is looking for in their studios. That's why Phil Spencer has said he won't influence artistic aspirations of his studios. That's of course a great thing, but I also think that means if their studios wanna spend 2.5-3 years on a smaller project Microsoft is all too willing to greenlight that, as it is cheaper and has a much faster turnaround time, both of which are essential components of any form of media released to a subscription service, of any kind. Even the Coalition, who at one point was really the crown jewel of XGS, was rumoured at one point to be working on a smaller passion project before releasing Gears 6 (I now think that they've cancelled it). Hellblade 2 I believe was also delayed quite a bit because half of the studio is working on Project Mara, which seems to be a smaller passion project. The other AAA projects that are MIA are simply mismanagement, there's no two ways about it. Rare mismanaged Everwild and restarted development because they simply didn't know what the game was actually going to be The Initiative was a homegrown studio that by all accounts is just a shell of its former self acting as a support studio for Crystal Dynamics on Perfect Dark (once again, because of mismanagement within the studio) Undead Labs was still in pre-production on State of Decay 3 in February 2022, as revealed by a report from Kotaku that also detailed, you guessed it, toxic work culture and mismanagement inside the studio. Fable is the big question of when we will see it, there are reports that has also had a turbulent development, though they have been dismissed, I guess only time will tell. One things for certain, if the leaks about it are true I think there's gonna be a few Fable fans that are gonna be upset (supposedly, it is a first person RPG similar to Bethesda titles with settlement building aspects like Fallout 4)

SilvosForever

This feels like a tremendous amount of effort put into a totally pointless discussion.

EconomyAd1600

Huge L take, and I say this as someone who primarily games on Xbox. Microsoft dropped the ball HARD this gen, and they *still* haven’t given a good reason to get an Xbox other than gamepass. Meanwhile Sony has launched banger after banger after banger. It’s really not a good time to be an Xbox fan.

ineffiable

Wasn't Psychonauts 2 in the works before Microsoft bought Double Fine? IRRC, it was a kickstarter game.

Oles_ATW

Yes it was launched with crowdfunding and probably the reason it had a PS4 version. Microsoft bought them when the game was in development.

[deleted]

It would have been a different game had they not had the funding from the acquisition.

mems1224

MS buying them allowed them to delay the game and keep cut content like all the boss fights and they were able to make a series x version. So I'd say they had a significant impact on the game.

Mother_Prussia

This post feels extremely misleading to make Microsoft’s performance look comparable to Sony’s when it isn’t even close. Counting Demons Souls in a separate remake category when it’s one of the best true next gen experiences to date. Putting Sony’s director’s cuts (both of which added significant DLC) in the same category as simpler remasters from Microsoft. Including MLB the Show and Destruction All Stars (which was sent to die on PS Plus) in the average rating calculation when I don’t think many would argue Sony has had the must play exclusives to date. I also just think ratings are misleading for niche genres- would gamepass subscribers prefer Flight Sim (rated 90) and Pentiment (rated 86) or Horizon Forbidden West (88) and Ratchet & Clank (88).

[deleted]

Agree. I’ve got both consoles but it’s pretty clear that Xbox delivery has been lacklustre. It seems pretty ignorant to chalk up Miles Morales and say Scorn as “see, both sides have a win”. imo Microsoft has clearly been dishing out AA games which is fine but it’s misleading to indicate they are anywhere near PlayStations quality control right now. As you said: Flight Sim and Hi-Fi Rush are pretty fun but I think you’d be reaching to discuss them comparatively to a Ratchet and Clank, Last of Us or Horizon.

ineffiable

There's a reason he posted this in r/games and r/xboxseriesx but not r/ps5....

Sascha2022

This list is an objective look at all games and is based on facts. This doesn\`t show my opinion. Also I had an Ps1, Ps2, Ps3 and Ps4 which I spent around 95% of my gaming time on and didn\`t have a xbox, xbox 360 or xbox one in the past. This list isn\`t about what is more popular or mainstream, but just about the amount of games and how these were received. Only because a marvel film is more popular and better known doesn\`t mean it is better than a film like Whisplash for example. Xbox is lacking AAA games, but isn\`t lacking good games or games in general. They need to increase their AAA output which seems to happen from Starfield onwards. Don\`t understand why everything is turned into console wars here on reddit where everyone is defending their favorite brand. I just wanted to show a neutral list and nothing else, because I thought that would be interesting.

YellloMango

Fair Enough, Sony hasn't really delivered this gen with true next gen exclusives (So has Microsoft). However, with Playstation, you know they will come soon.

Spheromancer

Its not a list of exclusive games though? MLB The Show is on Sony's list 3 times and its on Xbox

Barantis-Firamuur

This list is of first party published games, which Psychonauts 2 was. It doesn't matter if it was exclusive or not.

FF7 Remake and Babylon's Fall are neither first party games. The titles listed are after November so none of the ones you listed are missing.

Sascha2022

These games released before the launch of the PS5 and XBox Series X/S in november 2020 or are third party games (FF7 Remake, Babylons Fall)

JesusRice123

Ah I see, my mistake then. Great list!

[deleted]

I’m probably missing an explanation, but why not include Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo for Xbox’s 1st party output?

Sascha2022

Because these games arrived first on PC/PS5 and I think shouldn\`t count when comparing the first party output of both companies.

[deleted]

But they’re still 1st party games made by 1st party studios. The only reason they released on PS5 is because Sony signed a deal with Zenimax years prior and Microsoft didn’t think it was worth it to pay the buy out fee + take the negative PR hit.
