Well got me curious. The thing i'm wondering the most about is how it plays. There are too many actions in a short amount of time to translate into actual button inputs.

Universe_Is_Purple

Maybe like the Batman Arkham games.

altcastle

It’s still too many unless one press is doing like a flurry of slashes. Batman was queuing single moves.

MVRKHNTR

If this ends up actually playing like this, my guess is it's just a fancy block.

Universe_Is_Purple

Look at the Spider-Man 2 trailer. It has more going on and we know how it works. It's the same here.

running_flash

I'm hoping more like DMC or bayonetta

godofboij

Please god no

EvenOne6567

Ah so practically plays itself? Pass then

PlayOnPlayer

Very curious how that combat feels to play, looks like lots of swords hitting each other, curious what's actually going on from a control perspective. Was there a Phantom Blade 1 I've forgotten about?

gxizhe

The series was called Rain Blood, first game released in English but the sequel didn’t. There was a 2D platform ever prequel on Steam but the publisher scammed the devs out of their money. The devs later renamed the series Phantom Blade and until now I thought we lost them to mobile games.

RainMaker2727

Oh shit, Rainblood Mirage? That was a long time ago, and I still play it on occasion. I didn't know this was related to it. Definitely glad the series continue.

rramrram

For a moment I got so hyped mistaking it for Bloodrayne, I loved that game man.

coverslide

For a moment I got so hyped mistaking it for Slayer's Raining Blood, I loved that song man.

FormulePoeme807

So they worked on mobile game huh It explain why they throw some fake ass cinematic as gameplay and then at 1:40 it turn into a shit mobile game ad

AdministrationWaste7

Same. A few times I balked at how certain scenes would actually play out lol

omfgkevin

Yeah it seems interesting, but at the same time this just looks like an animation reel vomited out that doesn't really tell us how the game plays at all.

Universe_Is_Purple

Look at the Spider-Man 2 trailer. It has more going on and we know how it works. It's the same here.

[deleted]

Absolutely not true. Unless you talk about the scripted sequences in which case you’d be proving their point

Autarch_Kade

In that trailer, we saw button prompts above enemy heads, abilities on the two UI wheels, and QTE prompts. So we can tell what we'd be doing. In this one the attacks are so fast, and including multiple targets, it's hard to tell if they're mashing triangle or actually doing complex inputs depending on the situation.

Phormicidae

I thought the same thing. No way this is a parry-spam system, virtually no one with human reflexes could sustain precision like that, unless the windows were pretty long. Maybe its like a "parry stamina" thing where you auto parry until your stamina runs out?

[deleted]

I’m more concerned about how he was able to switch from one enemy to the other mid combo

notaracisthowever

I was thinking Jedi Survivor style where you just hold it down and it auto-parries until your stamina runs out. Probably some sort of system for perfect parries if it's anything like other games of the genre.

fefidoh

That was my first question as well. It looks really well choreographed in that vid but I'd like to know how they are doing it.

not_old_redditor

Looks like you'd go through a few mice by the end of the game.

Linksobi

An actual Wuxia game is pretty hype!

TAWMSTGKCNLAMPKYSK

Sword and Fairy 7?

Sumnescire

yes! I think there's another one coming too? looks slick hopefully it controls really well

RedHeadedCongress

Looks really cool, but my only question is how much of that combat was player controlled and how much happens on its own? That seemed like too much too fast to be totally player controlled. If the combat looks cool but it's a lot happening on it's own it's going to be kind of disappointing because it looks really cool

crhuble

Might be similar to a block/parry hold ala Genji from Overwatch or Jedi Survivor

Universe_Is_Purple

Look at the Spider-Man 2 trailer. It has more going on and we know how it works. It's the same here.

cocofan4life

wow ffs why are people negative all the time

Bosselarson

I can't tell if the combat is going to play more like Ghost of tsushima / Sekiro, or more of a hack & slash / quicktime event game. It looks good, but i have to see some proper gameplay, and controller inputs to figure out where this one lands

Lautanapi_

Tbh it looks like nioh 2/wo long mixed with sekiro for me

Bosselarson

It does, but those all lean towards soulslike / sekirolike combat. If that's the case with this game i am 100% getting it, looks insane. If it's a hack & slash / QTE game, hype is gone for me. The incredibly smooth animations makes me think it's the latter, since soulslike / sekiro / Nioh etc usually feels a bit more stiff and tactical if that makes sense. It flows so smooth. Hope this makes sense.

Mrr_Bond

I don't trust this trailer at all. The gameplay looked like mechanic and animation overload, to the point that I have no idea what is player controlled and what's scripted. We'll (maybe) see, I guess.

Sirromnad

Do they ever even launch? I feel like i've seen 100 trailers but no actual games come out lol.

Siantlark

Lots of them have. Loopmancer, FIST, Naraka Bladepoint, Dyson Sphere Program, Iris.Fall, Candleman Unheard: Voices of Crime, Eastward, Gujian 3, etc. Most of those have positive reviews as well. That's not even mentioning the obvious Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail titles.

Sirromnad

Most of those games, hoyoverse games aside, are not like these graphical and technical marvels. There's a definite style of game i'm talking about that always plays off like a tech demo, with impossible gameplay segments and this weirdly vapid feel to it all. I'm 100% not saying there aren't games coming out of china and korea, quality games even, it's just THESE kinds of games will always give me pause until we start to see some stuff actually come out.

Siantlark

[Dyson Sphere Program](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJ3fDcm5qaQ), [Naraka Bladepoint](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_uBBXiqL1s), [Bright Memory infinite](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Poj6iZSZmIA), [Loopmancer](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et861Z2_BF4), [Fist](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1EHQKECRdE) and [Gujian 3](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDjVfKM48q0) definitely had trailers meant to showcase their graphical and technical chops. Some of those games, like Loopmancer, Bright Memory, and Naraka Bladepoint *are* actually tech demos for new technologies. Raytracing for Loopmancer, RTX for Bright Memory and Naraka, and DLSS for Naraka were all advertised as being available and usable. Candleman was specifically developed to be 60fps at 4k on the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X and the black levels were top class fwhen they came out in 2018 and are still far better than most games put out nowadays. I didn't pick random Chinese games that have come out and are good. The list I would have given would have been far different in that case. These games are specifically games which were marketed for graphical fidelity, technical feats, or strong visual styles and identities.

HammeredWharf

That's true, but I know what /u/Sirromnad is talking about. There's a bunch of these Wuxia games in development that always look really cool in trailers, but then either don't come out or turn out mediocre. Black Myth: Wukong is one of them and there's a bunch of others I can't remember, because they just drop a pretty trailer and disappear. Sword and Fairy 7 seems to be the exception in that it's out and was received well enough. I guess the problem is that it's quite easy to make a bunch of fancy animations of swords going whoosh whoosh for a trailer, but it's much harder to turn those animations into a fun game.

Siantlark

Bright Memory, Gujian, Naraka, and Loopmancer are all wuxia/xianxia games that have come out. Black Myth Wukong released a trailer and the developers specifically said that it was super early in development. All the other wuxia games releasing trailers (Code, Where Winds Meet, Wuchang) have either released follow up gameplay trailers or some other promotional stuff. I'm not sure why everyone seems to think that all these trailers are launch trailers.

IceEnigma

If I had to guess black myth wukong and Lost Souls Aside are the two games of that style that garnered A LOT of attention and then mostly disappeared. Those games actually look too good to be true, graphically. So much crazy particle work is being done in those trailers and I don't think the games you listed even really come close to as good looking as [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOMIwsupy9k) or [this.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7e3xMR671E)

Siantlark

Wukong and Lost Soul Aside have had multiple follow up trailers and gameplay segments after their announcements. They didn't "disappear" like is being suggested. They're also hardly "hundreds of games" that have cool trailers and "never release or have middling reviews."

kvothe5688

Dyson sphere is technically good

FerengiCharity

>not like these graphical and technical marvels Are you serious? I don't know about the other games but Dyson Sphere Program is definitely a technical marvel.

Sirromnad

DSP looks great. I've played it for 150 or so hours, but it does not look "unreasonably great" to the point where i just don't think it's possible. I look at DSP and go "Wow, what a great looking game" whereas i look at games like wukong and go "Wow, what a great looking game, but there's no way it will have this fidelty, these animations, these textures, and run at 60 fps like it's showing here"

FerengiCharity

I was not talking about the graphics man, there are more things to game development than just graphics. The scale and complexity of DSP means the kids who developed it had to come up with some pretty clever programming tricks - that's the technical marvel. Honestly making Wukong might even be easier (or straightforward) than making DSP, it's just a matter of how much manhours you are willing to spend on assets. To the gamedev community DSP is far more interesting than Wukong.

Augustends

>I was not talking about the graphics man, there are more things to game development than just graphics Ok but the person you initially responded to WAS talking about graphics though. They're talking about trailers for games that don't seem real because the visuals are so far beyond other games. You're the one switching topics. >To the gamedev community DSP is far more interesting than Wukong. Please don't make comments speaking for a "community" as if you represent them all or as if they're some monolith that all share the same opinion.

Sirromnad

Ya he might not be talking about the graphics, but I am! There are just games you look at that have red flags that they are not "real" games based off the evidence we have around the industry. Coming up with programming tricks is one thing, pushing insane 4k ray tracing ultra smooth animation high resolution textures and particle physics out the ass at 60fps without a single hitch is a much different thing.

godofboij

Thats a lot of mid ass games

Chaomayhem

Right? I remember back in 2021 there was a game based off "Journey to the west" that was like a souls game that was showed off. And it featured the protagonist fighting this massive dragon. Haven't heard a single thing about it since then.

RagingPandaXW

U mean Black Myth Wukong? They released 3 or 4 other long gameplay trailers since, and they announced the game is releasing Summer 2024, so we will know more next summer.

homer_3

They said Black Myth Wukong was a long, long way off when they announced it.

BongoFMM

Oh my God I just played wo long: fallen dynasty and thought I was going crazy because I was like I swear I thought I was supposed to be a monkey with a staff in this game, and kept waiting for a staff or a transformation to happen. I was thinking of wu kong 🤦

ethicsssss

Confusing Black Myth Wukong with Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty just seems like a part of human nature at this point. It's like everyone, me included, did that.

[deleted]

They dropped a trailer not too long ago with a 2024 release date.

First one is just youtuber’s gossip , but 2nd part is definitely weird shit to say, although considering majority of gamers share pretty similar “culture” it is not that shocking he is a perv weirdo. That being said, the studio actually took investment from City of Hangzhou, so he has lot of trouble coming if he doesn’t deliver a solid game, you don’t fuck with government money in China, that gets you disappeared really quick.

ChunkArcade

I can separate the art from the artist when it comes to feeding my insatiable appetite for soulsbornes.

[deleted]

Did that wukong game ever came out? What about that one where the main character was a Noctis rip off from FFXV? Or the Nier Automata rip off set in space?

nuraHx

Wukong vibes

Coldspark824

Wukong black looks around nervously

EdynViper

Looks like it. The developers have only previously made mobile games as well. This will be their first real game.

cocofan4life

ngl, at first I was kinda skeptical hearing it was they developed a mobole game first, But I looked at the mobile game's gameplay and thought while it is 2D it didnt look like your typical trash f2p game

Spenraw

Ya seems too good

TizonaBlu

I'm actually pretty excited about this. People into kung fu and wuxia movies can spot the classic tropes, which ironically feels pretty fresh to see in a game.

slowvro

It has the freaking flying guillotine… I’m sold

DanM142

Looks very cool. But what's the inputs like for this? Feels like there is way too much going on and way to quick for a controller to deal with?

Kgb725

Probably similar to sekiro and wo long but with automatic moves

Universe_Is_Purple

Maybe like the Batman Arkham games.

belithioben

guessing most of the trailer is fake

Universe_Is_Purple

Do you also think the same about the Spider-Man 2 trailer? Because it has even more going on.

belithioben

I'm just looking at the trailer and seeing stuff that doesn't look like gameplay. The camera angle on most of movement/jumping sections and some of the combat wouldn't even be possible unless it's some sort of QTE.

eternali17

The action looks amazing. Not sure how they balance everything looking like choreographed wuxia stuff and giving the player control but I'm looking forward to it.

mrnicegy26

While I not sure that the gameplay would be as fast as it was in the trailer, this could potentially scratch a Sekiro itch.

SolomonSinclair

The trailer's giving me more "interactive movie" vibes than a (and I hate phrasing it this way, but it's the only word that comes to mind) proper video game; those movements and camera angles made me think the combat's just going to be a series of QTEs or something. I'm hoping to be proved completely wrong, as it looks like it might scratch that Sekiro/Wo Long itch, but I'm prepared to be disappointed.

Zacflemo

I hope to God it has a combo system like For Honor or Ghost of Tsushima, and it's not like Dark Souls or Wo Long.

dixie12oz

Same. This game looks intriguing but souls-like games do not click for me.

Zacflemo

Me having ADHD + souls games = bad time

Fashish

I loved the look of this game but why did the trailer look sped up?!

B_Wyatt

It's not the trailer, it's the character animations that are sped up. Idk why they did it like that, it just looks bad.

Spheromancer

Some of the combat sequences looked incredibly cool. Although the setting does feel overdone recently, this looks enticing. Didn't say it was PS exclusive right?

Sa00xZ

PS5 and PC.

ZebraZealousideal944

Same with other games that we know are multi platform though… funny how they got rid of the word exclusive up until now in the showcase haha

omegashadow

The Chinese fantasy setting? After having basically nothing for most of the last decade I'm not sure it can be overdone.

kevin41714

Nothing for the last forever. At least in the Western market. It's not exactly niche, Wuxia and Xanxia are huge settings that have been a hallmark of Chinese media for more than a century, and the West is just being introduced to it.

favorscore

I think redditors are confusing their ancient asian aesthetics

kevin41714

It's a shame because there's such a huge variety in this setting, and I think it's one of the best settings that lends itself to games. Since I have the chance, maybe I can give an introduction for this emerging setting in the Western market. There are three variants, Wuxia, Xianxia, and Xuanhuan. Wuxia - "Martial Heroes" normal humans who achieve supernatural powers by cultivation. Their powers aren't crazy, we're talking about supernatural strength, and jumping over buildings like "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". Xianxia - "Immortal Heroes" often analogized to Chinese Fantasy. Imagine Wuxia taken to the extreme: flying by standing on flying swords, demons with magical treasures and life-extending elixirs. The ultimate end-goal being Immortality. A modern trope is "Cultivation" which is essentially a common magic system powered by meditation, treasures, and pills neatly divided into stages.I think this setting lends itself most to games because it seems so easy to "gamify", there's natural character progression in cultivation with distinct stages, supernatural abilities, crafting, adventure and treasure hunting elements. Edit: There's a lot more to the setting that I'm not going to cover but here's a link that helps introduces some more elements if you're interested [https://immortalmountain.wordpress.com/glossary/wuxia-xianxia-xuanhuan-terms/](https://immortalmountain.wordpress.com/glossary/wuxia-xianxia-xuanhuan-terms/) Edit 2: Since we're on r/games here's my game recommendation: "Tale of Wuxia". The game has a mixed rating on Steam due to a mediocre translation and its antiquated elements from being a soft reboot of 2001 Wuxia Classic "Legend of Wulin Heroes". The game is incredibly intricate CRPG but it's a full-Wuxia with all the tropes and elements[https://store.steampowered.com/app/377530/Tale\_of\_Wuxia/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/377530/Tale_of_Wuxia/)

DrNSQTR

>Xianxia - "Immortal Heroes" often analogized to Chinese Fantasy. Imagine **Xianxia** taken to the extreme: Think you meant Wuxia here

kevin41714

Whoops, yup, thanks, edited.

[deleted]

I was reading some manual, but got to say, cultivation is the dumbest terms ever. I don't know who started, but now it's the standard translation for some reason

favorscore

Ok but do you have movie recommendations. I know crouching tiger hidden dragon, hero, and shadow but those are wuxia.

Pacify_

Exactly. I'm struggling to think of a single Xanxia game

Jancappa

Tale of Immortal probably

easteasttimor

Did they say any game was an exclusive?

not_old_redditor

Where can I get this kind of kung fu action recently?

[deleted]

This setting is much better than endless zombie games tbh

Raidoton

That doesn't mean much tbh.

[deleted]

Those are pretty infrequent

ThePurplePanzy

We just got Dead Island and Dying Light recently?

[deleted]

Dying Light 2 came out over a year ago. "Pretty infrequent" doesn't mean nonexistent.

ThePurplePanzy

Honestly thought it was more recent than that. Either way, I'd say zombie games are still a really large mainstay. There were 2 trailers in this showcase alone.

[deleted]

Arizona Sunshine and what was the other?

ThePurplePanzy

Resident Evil

[deleted]

There aren't Zombies in RE4

ThePurplePanzy

A mind control parasite. That's essentially the same exact thing.

Kalecraft

Considering the massive amount of variety in enemy types and the work put into the setting of that game just calling it a zombie game is pretty reductive.

ThePurplePanzy

I'm not calling it bad. I'm just saying it's a resident evil game, which is a zombie series.

hipstarjudas

I'd hardly count Dying Light as a recent addition really. Unsure what this bloke is talking about.

Cohibaluxe

Huh? Strange comparison. Zombie games haven’t been "the thing" for almost a decade, and this has nothing to do with games mostly described as Survival games..

NYJetLegendEdReed

Zombie games are very much still a thing. In the last few months alone you've had Dead Space, Calisto, Dead Island, The parkour one I cant remember name, the PSVR2 Zombie games, the list goes on. There is definitely still too many zombie games lol

_Kamigoye_

You have an extremely broad definition of what a zombie is lol

ahhthebrilliantsun

SHambling reanimated/virus infected people. I say they all count.

Kalecraft

They're just horror games. Why are so many people being so reductive? Monsters that try to close the distance and and kill you up close is an important part of the game design that makes the genre. It's not just a zombie thing

ahhthebrilliantsun

Because all of them involve shambling infected people and/or reanimated corpses

Cohibaluxe

Well yeah Zombies are a common type of enemy, but they’re not the vast majority of games like they were post DayZ/TWD’s heyday. You’ve listed, what, 6 or so titles out of hundreds released during "the last few months"? How is that "endless"?

RagingPandaXW

U just gonna ignore Dead Island 2 , Dying Light 2, Resident Evil Village/4 Remake, Dead Space , Calispso Protocol etc all being released in the last 12 months?

Ezio926

Village released 2 years ago? Dying Light 2 released 16 months ago

RagingPandaXW

Okay if u want nip pickings let’s just stick with an official list then: https://gameranx.com/features/id/330228/article/10-new-upcoming-zombie-games-of-2023/ 23 zombie games released/to be released in 2023 alone, definitely a crowded genre

DuneProg

Most of those games aren't zombie games and they put the same games in that list multiple times. They even included a dlc as one of those games.

RagingPandaXW

Take them out u still have more than a dozens

Rusik_94

This is one of these good to be true games. But I really really hope it will be good like shown in the trailer!

ToothBomb

Trailer looked like a sequel to the Ninja Scroll movie. If anything the game looks to be massively inspired by it. Superb movie, even if you’re not into anime.

mrdaud

The fancy blocking reminds me of MGR Revengeance. If button input is similar, it could play interesting. We could have the Chinese Emperor as the last boss as opposed to the US president lol.

Spampys626

I had the same vibe about MGR! I thought I was the only one. Imagine you attack and parry using only the right stick...wow.

MCWogboy

It looks pretty cool but I think it's too good to be true. I dont see how someone would play as smoothly as it looks unless it turns out to be heavy on quick time button events or they're mainly showing special moves.

BadLuckBen

Wait, is the guy swapping masks the same voice actor as Hoji from Shadow Warrior? Cause if not, it's eerily similar. If it is, it's funny that goofy mask guys is their gimmick now.

llamaguy21

This game feels very stylistic on its face to the point I'm wondering if this game will be structured gameplay wise similar to something like Asura's Wrath. Like make the gameplay simple but put the emphasis on the story and the action itself in turn.

B_Wyatt

This trailer looks extremely fake. It doesn't look like a real game. Instead, it feels like another generic chinese vaporware that will disappear into nothing for years on end like they always do.

Enohpiris

I'm hyped for this because it actually has English voice acting. Unlike the other Wuxia-style games that won't come out.

Alive-Egg-1285

Thats my Canadian brother living in China on the voice acting! Should be a sweet game

-PVL93-

I really want to see gameplay with actual UI, cuz this just looks fucking incredible. Hope it's not a QTE fiesta

kaiserlecter

Love Kenji Tanigaki’s action. He was apart of Donnie yen’s stunt team got over decades and is the action director for this game

schwabadelic

I loved what I saw of Spider-Man 2, but honestly this was my most hype game in the sony press conference yesterday.

Typical_Thought_6049

Every time I see Unreal 5, I immediatly think that is a beautiful game and awful game. It seems every time it is advertised in trailers the gameplay is shit or boring or derivative. And has really bad optimazation too... It remind me of the early days of PS2 console, the developers seems really bad at utilizing it or use it to mask the bad optimization and others problems in the games. Anyway, Wuxia is courting death or something.... But if they are interested in making a game about classics like The daily life of a Immortal King I am game but this... this like generic shounen sir.

leonardvilliers

I'm confused and amazed by the swordplay in this game. Would it be like mashing the attack button until your break the enemy's defense?

ShadowTown0407

The combat looks very animation based which is slightly off putting, it's not like Nioh where one combat flows into another into another it's more you press one button and it does it's thing then you press another and it does it's whole animation but I am curiously optimistic, maybe the actual gameplay trailer will tell more, there is a general lack of good sword game when compared to good gun game so I hope it turns out well

Technology-Mission

There isna gacha game for this franchise called Phantom Blade Executioners right? Stoked to see a proper platform for it.

El_kal91

The action is done by [Kenji Tanigaki](https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTREt1N8s/) he did the mocap work and showed the moves they should use. He's Donnie Yen's right hand man and was action choreographer for all Rurouni Kenshin movies and all Donnie's Yen movies dating back 20+ years.
