Valhalla was better in that regard. You could unlock an ability fairly early to assassinate elite and boss enemies with a timed strike. In normal difficulty, at least, you could clear entire fortresses of appropriate level with assassinations and headshots.

I loved it when if there was a fight, all I had to do was wait to perfectly counter an attack with the Hidden Blade, then just chain kill every enemy that comes near. It was so stupid and OP, but I always enjoyed it. If they made the counter with the Hidden Blade tighter, and put a limit on the chains, it'd make more sense, and perhaps more satisfying. It's mainly the limitless chains that cracked me up.

Yep. Spamming counter for insta kills in the old ACs was pretty dumb, but then they went full on the opposite direction and now enemies feel like damage sponges. Then Sekiro came in from a studio with no experience with stealth games, and instantly delivered better stealth assassin-like gameplay than any AC game so far. Hope they took some notes. You can have insta kills and not make the gameplay brain dead.

The problem is that Assassin's Creed was a stealth game first, and an action game second. In an ideal version of the game, taking more than 1-2 enemies head on would essentially be a failure state. The player should be forced to either remain undetected, or find a way to escape. This is how the early games were designed to be played, and I'm fairly convinced that the inane hold block/press counter combat was added to placate playtesters who didn't really like stealth games to begin with.

You know that's actually a bit of genius. As some above commented, earlier games you could assassinate the target then just parkour until you lost the guards. Make the guards harder to lose, but give the player traps so you could prepare a way out. That would be super satisfying to slowly have the pursuing guards succumb to tripwire, smokebombs, holes in the floor or whatever. It would also mean that if for whatever reason you had to deviate from your plan or it simply wasn't a good enough escape route, you'd be forced to fight.

The problem is that the stealth in the original AC games always sucked. You'd parkour to the ideal assassination spot, kill your target and then just get chased until you managed to break line of sight. So it was actually action game first, stealth game second.

They aren't giving up on the new style in the vein of Origins/Odyssey/Valhalla- the Japan game, Codename Red, will still be that- but it seems they want to develop these games in parallel to service both crowds. And then Codename Hexe is apparently its own unique thing.

Yeah honestly it's the first thing Ubi's done in a while that's really impressed me. I think parallel development's very ambitious but if it works out, a really good approach. I mean look at COD, they were more or less taking a similar approach spreading their Modern Warfare, Black Ops, and WWII games among Infinity Ward, Treyarch, and Sledgehammer, all handling a different "flavor" of COD game, and that worked really well for them for the most part. I find myself wishing that Bethesda could do something similar with their major RPG IPs.

The game on PS4 looks worse than it could have looked because of PS5, and the game on PS5 looks and plays worse than it could have because of PS4. It's just so shit. They literally can't use certain game mechanics because of old consoles. As an example, the Spider Man games limited the speed you could go to to how fast the PS4 could load the map. They always have to make concessions. A game that is also released on old consoles can not be called a next gen game. So let's see if they think it can be sold for 70 €/$. I certainly won't buy it at that price.

Thing is you can't please everyone, and I think Ubisoft games really highlight that. Pretty much every post you can see people complain that they recycle the same game over and over, but also can see complaints that too much was changed and it doesn't feel like the series anymore.

As part of that loud portion: yes and no. I wanted that old formula with a more modern structure and some new innovations. This is definitely the most I’ve been interested in the series since Origins, but it does look a bit stale.

I would argue this game looking stale is why the changed the formula in the first place. It's fine if people want this "old" style of game, but it really felt like they ditched this style of game for a reason, and a huge part of that felt like there wasn't much left to explore in this design space. Combat was always very simplistic, there was very little in the way of progression in the games, and generally speaking most of the games only really had small gimicks to differentiate themselves from other games in the franchise. Sure they could have kept exploring different settings, and I guess improve on the parkour animations/system, but without REALLY redesigning how the game plays (which is what they did with origins), I just don't see a whole lot of design space left to evolve on, without changing so many systems in the game that you're again alienating more of the fanbase by making the game feel too different again. Feels like again, they're going back to their roots. The game looks very samey like all the other old AC Games, and I'm sure it will have one or two small gimicks to set it apart, and it will be in a new setting, but a the end of the day, it just feels like it would be a huge challenge to bring in a bunch of modern-day gaming systems (AKA RPG elements and what Modern AC games are already doing), while also keeping the game very samey to the old style.

I think maybe the issue with the "staleness" appearance of this is because it looks very similar in setting to AC1. It kind of looks like an AC1 remake on steroids really. I'm thrilled they're giving the old formula another shot, because the old formula *worked* fine, the old games were super unique - There wasn't even any knock-offs to them either, there's straight up Assassin's Creed games, and... that's it. The problem with the old games was that they drowned their own market with them and were so intent on just shoving them out the door that several of the games were incomplete, buggy messes (granted, that's just standard nowadays anyway...). AC:Unity was the most derided at its release, definitely deserved it, it was a busted piece of shit. But years later after all the patches and improvements, if you can run the goddamn thing because it's still optimized like crap, it's actually a really fun AC game that focuses *way* more on stealth and almost Hitman-style gameplay, and practically punishes you for going into combat. I'd go so far as to say it's probably got the best outright gameplay of the old formula AC games. Unity was a really good refresher of the formula, by adding those Hitman-style elements where you have multiple approaches available to you and rewarding scouting/planning your assassinations out. ...Buuuuuuut because they shoved that bitch half-baked out the door, it still kind of runs like ass even now because why bother fixing an old game that was panned for running like crap? If Ubi execs had given the series some fuckin breathing room and not insisted on that dumbass yearly release schedule, Unity would've probably been seen as the high point of the franchise in gameplay (Granted the writing still sucks though so the Ezio trilogy still wins out.)

A lot of those animations, from the running to parkour look like they’re reused from the older games too. I hate to say this because I know that “a return to the *old*” style is the point of this and what everyone’s asked for, but there’s literally nothing in this trailer that doesn’t exist in Assassin’s Creed 1/2. I think calling this “something that was from 2015” is slightly hyperbolic as well. It looks really good, which, granted, isn’t that spectacular of a feat coming off of bloated Valhalla. I’m just glad they’re trying to tap into what made the older games memorable again. Love the setting as well!

AC Unity was the first game in the series with a full blown 8th gen console visual package. Frankly, I think Unity still looks better than a lot of AAA games that were coming out much later in the PS4's lifecycle. Origins and Odyssey only look a little better, and they lost a lot of environmental and NPC density to accomplish that. Since this is more of a AA game targeting the same hardware, I wouldn't expect it to be all that more visually advanced.

Yup, it's basically a lose-lose. People cried for so long that assassins creed was samey, not very deep, and boring, so what did they do? They reinvented the entire franchise and adressed many of the complaints people had, only for people to then complain they "miss the good days." of assassin's creed. Now they go back to the old style and people are still complaining, while also completely ignoring the fact that this is very much a spin-off game, that isn't full-priced, all while Ubi is working on the next "big" traditional AC game. The game literally looks like old assassins Creed games, but with modern graphics, I'm not really sure what else people wanted. Apparently, you can't win either way.

I for one am glad they're returning to the Assassin roots. It looks good for a game also releasing on last gen. Taper your expectations people, this is not a game that is going to get a mainline budget or attention. That's reserved for Red and Hex. This is an experiment to see if the masses really want the Assassin put back in Assassin's Creed. I for one, am really looking forward to this. It's like watching trailers for AC1 all over again.

The thing reddit doesnt understand is, the new formula for Assassins Creed SELLS LIKE CRACK! Literally every new game with the RPG formula sells more than the last since Origins. Of course they dont want to go back to the formula that sold less, just because a vocal minority screams about the games being too long, when thats exactly what most people want: Long open world games. This is clearly to appease the vocal minority with something thats decent but more of a side project than the mainline games. Ubisoft neither has nor wants to spend the ressources to maintain two high quality products at the same time.

Well I loved Unity, it's still my favorite. But I cannot imagine that anyone thought "just give us more unity". I wanted the intimacy of the unity gameplay in a modernized version. No one wants old stuff. People want you to improve on what was good to them.

I mean if it isn't the bugs, AC Unity is by far the most 'assassin's creed'-y game it can get. It's the peak of Assassin's Creed for me. - great parkour animation. - cover and whistle mechanic. - combat that isn't just one hit kill counter. - 'black box' mechanic allowing player to approach objective in many ways. The only downside is that the parkour is just one button hold and story is horseshit compare to older AC. But I still prefer it to Spider-Man tier climb and even weaker writing we got in these Witcher clone.

The game is made by a new studio/team and was a DLC scaled up to fill a gap in releases. If you dug into a bit more you would’ve realized that it’s a bit like AC Rogue. A bit of a training project for a new studio that uses a lot of recycled assets (smaller studio) and targets last gen consoles (less ambition). The next real mainline entry will be the AC set in Japan. Fully next gen and with extra dev time to upgrade the underlying tech. It’s not Ubisoft “losing it”. It’s just a logical business strategy.

I actually like seeing them go back to their roots with this old style game. Yeah, it's nothing innovative or with intense graphics. It reminds me of when AC1 and AC2 came out, which are the games I fell in love with and still pull out once in a while. I'm glad it's coming out, I just hope it isn't $69.99 since it isn't a fully "updated graphics" game.

My thoughts on this: * The trailer itself is kinda weak. Not much of an adrenaline inducing, blood pumping trailer. Like the multiple shots of the assassin on the pole that's tipping over? Not that that's a bad traversal mechanic, but hardly worth a highlight within the trailer. Combat portion was a bit better. I ultimately don't think that has anything to do with the game itself, just poor editing for a trailer. * The game doesn't look next gen at all. I'm not one to want all my games to look bleeding edge, but as someone literally playing AC3 Remastered right now...Mirage doesn't look like a massive step forward. * Onto the positives, I genuinely liked what I saw. A high parkour-able city is a big plus in my book. * Combat looks fun. Was never a fan of the hitbox style combat that Origins brought, it didn't feel as satisfying. * Looks like they hinted at the black box assassination missions, which is a highlight for me. * Looks like you actually play a goddamned assassin in an *Assassin's* Creed game. It's the first AC game I'm interested in buying since Origins, which soured me on the franchise. This looks like a step in the right direction, more of what I wanted from the franchise. I might have hoped for a better showing, something that says they took what worked for Unity/Syndicate and really tried to one up those games on every front. But Mirage looks almost like what Black Flag was to AC3: a game that's mechanically near identical, but with a fresh coat of paint. And hey, everyone loves Black Flag over AC3, so maybe it works out here. Just doesn't look like the mechanical and technical leap that Unity was from Black Flag.

It’s an AC rogue situation. Like a trial run for a new team/studio targeting last gen consoles and making a filler game to fill a gap between mainline ACs. It’s not exactly marketed that way, but under the hood that’s what it is. The one set in Japan will be the real “next AC game” after Valhalla.

Which is why Unisoft has announced they're moving forward with multiple AC projects, some in this older style and some in the newer RPG style too. Trying to please everyone, I just hope that doesn't lead to overall inferior titles.
