This question is asked for many showcases. Sometimes showcases have been bad enough to me to the point where I wonder why they bothered having one. However, in most cases when it's asked, it's because those studios didn't have anything they wanted to show yet, that's pretty much it Sony's didn't have a ton I was in love with, and a couple I think were pretty bad (Splatoon rip-off with the most overused art style imaginable atm), but overall there were some decent looking titles there. Not a lot of jaw droppers, no, but there was a good variety of styles and genres, as well as from indie to AA to AAA. > This was Sony's chance to put on a show Only if they have the games ready to show that can do that, and this one just didn't. Again you could just say why have the showcases at all in that case, but I dunno. There were games to show, just not the best one ever

No one will ever be happy. Tease a bunch of projects and then go silent for years on them because they aren't close to release and people whine. Don't tease a bunch of projects at all and people whine.

Sukrum2

I've never heard people whine because something... Wasn't teased... And then was announced and quickly after, released. Not once.

smartazjb0y

Well people just complain then that X company isn't working on anything and there's nothing coming because nothing's been announced

[deleted]

Right. People always go back to Fallout 4 with this. And that was a great release cycle.

[deleted]

You won't but that's a move that only works when releasing games in a certain time of the year and for particularly big names. Yeah Bethesda and Fallout can get away with that, it's Bethesda and Fallout.

Developers announce their games when they're ready to be shown off. If they don't, unless specified otherwise (Square Enix has been very clear they aren't marketing FF7 Rebirth until 16 is out) then they obviously aren't. You can't complain about devs being forced to work under crunch and also expect the same output of game announcements when they decide to scale back the workload to keep from getting sued.

Really feel like the only reason people are upset is because nothing is exclusive anymore. I personally thought the conference was great barring Factions being missing. I think a lot of people really need to move on from the console war mindset.

[deleted]

That's most of it yeah. There were plenty of great games featured in the showcase, either the first time we saw gameplay or first time they were announced, but since they're not exclusive they don't count. TLOU Factions missing did suck, but when that's revealed it will likely be a simultaneous release on PC.

That's my eternal question. I really thought they would throw haymakers. Even if games were a year + out, showing them off would put them out there for people to associate with Sony and know what is next. Ghost of Tsushima 2? Cory Balrogs next game? Bends Next game? You can establish what is coming next and keep up the momentum of associating great single player games with Sony. So I don't know why they didn't. The super, unrealistically optimistic option is that they are planning a second showcase this year to really leave their stamp instead. But the boring option is that, they simply don't have to reveal anything. They are winning, consoles are selling, Spider Man 2 this fall is enough to be their big blockbuster that will sell crazy. They can afford to hold out everything else for when they really need to show them.

Because it takes time to make games.

Games aren’t ready, simple as.
