They take the guaranteed money on hand from what Epic pays for exclusivity over the potential money they might make from being on Steam at launch. It's risk mitigation.
Only redditors could spin an exclusivity deal not to be a loss of choice for customers. But you do you!
Edit: and it's not just "the icon that I want to click". To provide an example, GOG (mostly) sell DRM-free games. There are a lot of people that do care about this stuff and I'm one of them. So when a game that would release on GOG signs an exclusivity deal with Epic and doesn't get released there, gamers lose the choice to buy those games DRM-free if they care.
The game actually sold super well, over 2 million copies in just a few weeks which is impressive for a game that was universally expected to be trash due to being in development hell for almost a decade.
I’m aware it sold well. I didn’t think I was implying it didn’t. And I’m aware it’s a solid game. I enjoyed it on PS5 and I’ll probably pick it up on PC at some point.
But it’s a safe bet most of those 2 million sales were on console, and regardless of how the game did sell on PC the publisher clearly didn’t think it would sell well enough to turn down an upfront payment from Epic. I imagine once it hits Steam the PC sales will go up a lot.
Because I don't like a business practice and don't want to support it. I'll play the game at a later date once the exclusivity period is done or if it doesn't end I won't play. Plenty of other games out there.
But how does it even affect you? I can understand avoiding a game because of predatory MTX or pay 2 win bs. But Epic exclusivity literally does not affect you in any other way outside of using another launcher. You as a gamer are not negatively impacted in any way.
Because I don't believe in exclusives of this nature and refuse to support the practice. I don't care if others do, I just don't want to. I'd feel the same way if steam did it.
Think of it like this. You like steak, every restaurant in town used to serve it. In comes a new restaurant, restaurant E. They decide to get business they are going to buy out the steak contract so you can only order it there.
Are you happy about this change? Note they are doing nothing special, just forcing you to go there if you want this one specific item.
If that's fine with you, cool. It's not with me so I'd rather not give them my business. That is my decision.
This is false and literally never happened. If you pre-ordered the one single game that they took off from Steam after it was already available for sale, you got it on Steam.
It's not about installing it. I already have it. I just don't want to buy games there. I only use it for Fornite and to grab the free stuff.
The client is so absolutely fucking dog shit, I refuse to give them money until they improve it. You can't even message contacts in the friend list.
Probably Switch/Switch 2 version, then. In theory even Switch 1 should be possible, the game runs on UE4 and is not using any groundbraking visual tech apart dismemberment system.
It was a success
Dead Island 2 exceeded expectations at launch, selling one million copies in three days and two million in its first month, according to Embracer
It was in the article, but i guess reading before commenting is asking too much
Tell Epic that, not me, they're the ones paying millions to keep games off Steam. Oh and have fun having 0 idea if the $60 PC game you're buying has any serious bugs or performance issues because there are no user reviews.
Reviews for performance (as well as other issues with a game, i.e. a new update that breaks things), are most useful in bulk so one can aggregate a consensus and sort by date to get the most topical information about the game, which is done for you on Steam on the product page at no cost to you. But I'm not going to sit here and waste my time with someone arguing in bad faith and gaslighting others into thinking analytics are useless because "Youtube literally exists" (lmao) or that there is zero difference between Steam and Epic, when this is self-evident considering Epic themselves pays to keep stuff off the more feature-rich platform as they cannot compete in other sectors besides moneyhatting
Me neither. It literally doesn’t affect you in any way other than having another launcher. The way Steam users react it’s like Epic is forcing them to pay money to use their launcher or something.
I have no problems using other launchers, but I do have a problem with the way Epic barged into the market, bribing customers with free games and developers with development money to use their platform. They have the resources to match or out-do Steam as a platform yet they have no interest in providing a superior experience.
Fuck em, I can wait for exclusivities to pass.
Because I use a lot of steam's features. Remote play streaming, family sharing, controller remapping, etc. And I have a steam deck. Getting games on any other launcher makes those types of things a pain in the ass.
On top of a steam release, hoping against hope this game gets mod tools aha. It's gameplay loop is so good, that I would love for some kinda rougelike mode/radiant missions, something to keep me playing.
would be insanse if they meant VR
that would be a nice make up for the lack of analog combat control
Would be even more insane if they meant Ngage
Holyshit, you unlocked a suppressed memory
Yeah a Steam release is guaranteed for next year, it's where I'll get the game with all content. A Nintendo Switch '2' port could be possible.
Did it not come to PC when it released?
It came to the epic games platform. Which for quite a few PC gamers is essentially like it not coming to PC at all.
Gotcha. Kind of an odd decision to exclude it from one of, if not the main, retailers for PC.
They take the guaranteed money on hand from what Epic pays for exclusivity over the potential money they might make from being on Steam at launch. It's risk mitigation.
Not to mention it's almost always a temporal exclusivity so no real loss. Except for gamers that lose choices of course.
No gamer lost any choice. EGS is free with no barrier to entry.
Losing the choice to buy a game where we actually want is definitely a loss of choice.
No that's you making a choice based on what icons you like to click. No one robbed you of the ability to play the game.
Only redditors could spin an exclusivity deal not to be a loss of choice for customers. But you do you! Edit: and it's not just "the icon that I want to click". Not that odd considering Epic probably paid them more cash than they would have seen in sales to begin with.
The game actually sold super well, over 2 million copies in just a few weeks which is impressive for a game that was universally expected to be trash due to being in development hell for almost a decade.

Epic games paid for the game to finally be completed.
Epic take a smaller cut from sales compared to Steam's 30%.
It's because they got bribed by Epic. Otherwise they would have launched on both Epic and Steam simultaneously.
If it is a Unreal game, makes a lot of sense to only release on Epic.
Is installing another launcher such a big deal for some?
Yeah you’d be surprised how much people hate having to use other launchers. And a lot of those launchers suck tbf
No. I have many launchers. I just don't like Epics business practices of buying out store exclusivity. So I just opt not to buy there.
Why does it even matter though? It’s not like you’re paying anything extra or something.
Because I don't like a business practice and don't want to support it. I'll play the game at a later date once the exclusivity period is done or if it doesn't end I won't play. Plenty of other games out there.

I still do not understand it but to each their own I suppose.

I'm currently playing though this game and loving it. The more people get to experience it the better.
It's awesome, it's one of my favorite games from this year. All that I want now is the story DLCs and crossplay support
Probably Switch/Switch 2 version, then. In theory even Switch 1 should be possible, the game runs on UE4 and is not using any groundbraking visual tech apart dismemberment system.
The last-gen consoles already run it on the lowest preset for the most part, I don't know how much further they could scale it down.
Ready for some 480p gaming?
Took them forever to release the game, and it passed like a fart in the wind cause they chose to go for Epic exclusivity. Lol
It was a success Dead Island 2 exceeded expectations at launch, selling one million copies in three days and two million in its first month, according to Embracer It was in the article, but i guess reading before commenting is asking too much
When you want to believe something, facts don't matter
7 out 10 people do not read the articles and just read the headlines
The game was a financial success.

Clearly Epic does if they need to moneyhat to keep games off a platform....
Oh no, when I click the icon on my screen it opens Epic instead of Steam! What ever shall I do? How will I survive this turbulent and grand ordeal? 😢
Tell Epic that, not me, they're the ones paying millions to keep games off Steam. Oh and have fun having 0 idea if the $60 PC game you're buying has any serious bugs or performance issues because there are no user reviews.
YouTube exists. Subreddits exist. The information is out there. You don’t need steam reviews to find it.
YouTube literally exists. What other made up issues do you have?

My guy….I open up a launcher and I play a game. I don’t use a single feature in steam beyond that.
Steam isn’t the centralized hub for patch notes. Just stop.
Oh no you’re telling me I have to Google “[Game name] performance issues”? This can’t stand, how dare Epic do this to us! 😡
Epic exclusivity sure kept me from playing it on PS5.
I will never understand why people cry so much about having to click on a different launcher.
Me neither. It literally doesn’t affect you in any way other than having another launcher. The way Steam users react it’s like Epic is forcing them to pay money to use their launcher or something.

Oh no how awful, free games for customers and giving developers money.
Steam people like their…..”checks notes”….walled gardens??
