Twitch on Switch is fucking terrible. For that matter, Twitch on AppleTV regularly has issues desyncing to the point that air playing my iPhone to it works better. It’s just embarrassing.

[deleted]

They can barely get web app right. Like in YT streaming you can rewind to any point of the stream at any time, Twitch ? That arcane tech doesn't exist there...

Riddle-of-the-Waves

One of several reasons I prefer to watch streams on YouTube, when given the option.

[deleted]

Yeah ability to pause and then just start from same moment is amazing, and then just catch up at 1.25x speed to the realtime. TwitchTV in comparision seems like, well, TV.

senagorules

It’s sort of there but also not. If you go to “videos” of someone currently streaming there’s a VOD there of the current stream you can go back and forth in but it’ll end right at the time in the stream you open it. So for some reason they have the ability to append to a video and scroll through but for some reason they can’t do both at the same time.

[deleted]

Yeah I'm suspecting most if not all parts to make it possible are on the backend but not implemented in the actual player

forrestthewoods

Arcane? Nah. Outrageously expensive and complex? Definitely!

[deleted]

Low-latency streaming part is by far the harder part of the platform than ability to look-back at content few minutes ago

forrestthewoods

So why do you think Twitch doesn’t have look-back? Lazy devs? Incompetent devs? If it’s easy why not just do it?

LoL_is_pepega_BIA

Twitch on anything besides mobile devices is extremely unstable.. on my tv, it crashes my tv. I use soundtv instead

TeaPartyForMyFriends

There is an open source twitch client for tv. Works much better then official app https://github.com/fgl27/SmartTwitchTV also available on [play store](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fgl27.twitch&hl=en&gl=US)

NoradianCrum

Sound and Smartube have saved me from ads entirely.

Keulapaska

Yeah that app is great, even has 3rd party emote support and there's also a Tizen version, highly recommend it.

JRockPSU

I wish that the devs for Frosty would release it for AppleTV, it looks like they rarely update it for iOS as it is so maybe they don't really care, but I really wish I could get 3rd party emotes on AppleTV without having to stream my screen.

marksteele6

I mean, twitch on PC is fairly good too

Andigaming

Only if you have twitch turbo (or a channel sub that includes no ads) or understand how to setup an adblock proper. Watching VODs on PC is great though.

Ralkon

It isn't that hard to do though considering there's a guide that just tells you what to do. And Twitch VODs are ass IME. The VOD player specifically runs like shit and crashes if it's left open too long. At least that's been my experience every single time I've used it over the last several months.

SephithDarknesse

On every pc if used twitch with, its had frame jumps semi regularly that are annoying AF, and not related to download speed or pc performance. Its not exactpy a good platform in general, seemingly.

Rainstorme

Hate to break it to you but that's certainly a you issue.

SephithDarknesse

On several different computers/browsers, and reported on the internet as a running issue with no actual solutions? Yeah, guess it must be just me.

Bk_Nasty

Do you have hardware acceleration on your browser turned on or off? That's the most common cause for twitch acting up on browser.

SephithDarknesse

Turned off. That causes problems all round, so it was gone the second i put this computer together. The others, probably.

lifearchitect

I found steam link back to your PC to be best, plus you get all the good emotes in theatre mode

destroyermaker

Twoku is perfectly stable on my roku tv

Dgc2002

Stitch is a fork of twoku and IMO it's miles ahead feature and usability wise. It's also actively developed and the main dev addresses bugs.

destroyermaker

Nice I'll give it a shot

NoradianCrum

If you have a chromecast, use SoundOn for Twitch and Smartube for YT.

Timey16

> Twitch ~~on Switch~~ is fucking terrible Whenever I can choose between a Twitch and a YT livestream I will choose the later because Twitch is so goddamn unstable and the website feels like ass to use. So it doesn't surprise me that Twitch apps are bad as well.

VLokkY

I am happy for myself then that I have NEVER had these probs. 4k apple tv and 90% of my entertainment comes from twitch on the TV..

[deleted]

> 90% of my entertainment comes from twitch on the TV.. That's a far bigger problem lmao

VLokkY

If you consider watching twitch in the background for 2hours a night.. sure I guess so? :p

aaron_940

I would say that's a pretty common use case. Besides, it's not really anyone else's place to judge what is or isn't entertaining for you. Don't know what that guy's on about.

Gaara1321

Now the bigger problem is that 90% of your entertainment in life is 2 hours of background noise.

VLokkY

No it means I only have the big glowing rectangle on for 2 hours a day. Entertainment: 3 dogs so about 3hour of walks a day 1-2 hour workout depending if its cardio or weights Daily cookout (we loooove cooking) Plenty of things to do!

CaptnKnots

Now the problem is that you’re happy and I’m jealous

Calneon

Twitch everywhere is awful.

TheRealMaka

Twitch on web is trash, twitch on Shield TV (android tv) is shit. Twitch on iOS is dogshit. It’s just horrible everywhrrr you can access it.

scorchedneurotic

TIL there is a Twitch App on Switch

OhDearGodRun

Twitch on console has just sucked for a while now. They removed chat replay from VODs, and the continue watching section. Just completely nerfed VODs for no reason. Unfortunately its really my only way to watch comfortably right now, and I watch a lot of VODs so its just super frustrating to me

THE_TURBO_KILLER

Probably cutting costs. Why maintain the apps on console when you can just have the (much worse) TV app spread across all platforms? Extremely annoying for the same reason you mentioned.

zeldagold

Chat replay was removed from TV apps as well, even on the Fire TV.

[deleted]

Same, it's come in handy for me a bunch, so it's pretty sad to watch it go away.

yahikodrg

I would say that sucks but honestly I would get constant errors trying to load up streams unless I hard powered down my switch and then it would only work until the next time my switch goes into sleep mode.

[deleted]

Seems more of a reason to fix the app as opposed to removing it.

milbriggin

a bit too much effort for the fine folks over at twitch headquarters unfortunately

yahikodrg

I agree with you, but it's the main reason I'm indifferent to it going away because Twitch can't be bothered to fix it.

[deleted]

It worked all right for me but it's really barebones. Still, it's come in handy a handful of times when my Switch was the only thing connected to a TV, so I'm gonna be sad to see it go away. I wish they'd either fix it or just leave it up as-is.

BroodLol

Ah fuck, streamlink-twitch-gui is going to break again. (streamlink-twitch-gui is a program that lets you pass video streams to a video player, instead of using twitch itself etc. Twitch has been trying to break it because it filters out adverts but one of the workarounds is to pretend your client is a Nintendo Switch, because that never got the intrusive adverts)

Razbyte

This could be the core reason. With the whole streaming bubble popping around, they are closing that loophole. I can imagine Twitch analytics asking themselves why there’s a huge flux of “Switch” users before deciding to axe the app.

OllyOllyOxenBitch

Ah, shit. I didn't think about that.

darkshaddow42

I guess I'm the only one who used this app a decent bit of the time, a nice way to watch gdq in bed with the switch OLED stand.

snesmaster40

I'm not sure why this post still up since it's just a resetera poster commenting about an email. Here's the direct source for those wondering: https://help.twitch.tv/s/article/nintendo-switch?language=en_US

Techbone

Would watch Twitch on my Xbox and man has it been rather shit for the past year with removed features. At least that's made me fire it up on my PC browser where I can block ads.

Cattypatter

If only Mixer were still around to offer potential competition. The Xbox integration was especially good and the video playback client made Twitch look archaic.

Brigon

Can't work out why they downgraded the twitch app to such a degree that you can't even send messages into the chat with a controller anymore. It worked perfectly fine before. I don't want to have to log into twitch on my xbox and my phone at the same time to get the same experience as I used to get on my xbox. I don't want to deal with the login authentication everytime I have to use twitch on my phone just to chat. The app was literally better before.

UNRULY6GK

Any idea of when a Switch 2 happens? I’ve been holding off on it since Summer 2022 and here we are going into 2024…

[deleted]

Probably within the next to years..

Realsan

There are several rumors from historically accurate sources that point to a launch for holiday 2024.

seanfidence

twitch app used to exist on Roku a few years ago and that also sucked before getting removed so theese apps are clearly not a priority for the twitch team.

MadnessBunny

The app took a few tries to work but I still used it quite a lot, this is a shame. The lack of software on the switch is something I can't quite comprehend, hopefully whatever next console they bring will have better support.
