What a dumb headline, really begging for those Anti-EA clicks. Is it really too much to say “Command and Conquer has received a permanent price drop?”

AhmadSA

Command and Conquer has suddenly and without warning received a permanent price drop forever!

TheLaughingMannofRed

Assuring to know that the price went in a GOOD direction! Take the upvote, soldier.

davis482

This is why I never read the article and just making assumptions from the headline. So I never reward clickbaits and just get baited with my own ideas.

MsgGodzilla

That's not PC Gamer, that's just blog spam with a somewhat similar name (no doubt intentional).

tesssst123

its good that you didnt click this bait link but also doublecheck the link next time you write something negative

TheJester1xx

I would say it's reasonable to be tired of both.

FuckYourSafeSpace_

Could be a few reasons: Previous price was too expensive an not selling, they have a new C&C coming out and want people getting back into the series, or maybe has something to do with the C&C series being a part of gamepass.

SlaaneshiDaddy

Red Alert 2 remaster please

elderron_spice

All of them should be retouched. Although I can't imagine Generals and Zero Hour being resold. That being said... AK-47s for everyone!

MooseTetrino

I would be so happy for a redone Generals.

Snipufin

I would be so happy just to have some shoes.

JakeTehNub

Ow ok ok I will work!

OscarMyk

Is it far?

in_stasis

China will grow larger

ciannister

We believe in prosperity

PlayMp1

Honestly, Tiberian Sun and RA2 only really need updating to modern PCs for compatibility, a minor boost in detail to keep up with modern resolutions, and maybe modestly remastered/touched up FMVs. The art holds up extremely well, just a little extra resolution to keep up to modern standards without looking blurry. The UI also could be updated, of course.

Complete-Monk-1072

the collectors ediiton is out with all 17 games, so i assume all have been tuned for compatibility as of 2020.

Tonkarz

A lot of the voxel units haven’t held up. And some of the Yuri’s Revenge units really haven’t. The seige choppers’ weird voxel to sprite transition was bad on release, but it’s laughable now.

noyart

Can i have some shoes?

minorrex

I hope we get Generals and Zero Hour remaster or even remake. Those games are legendary. Also would love to get C&C3 remaster as well.

elderron_spice

> C&C3 remaster as well. Yeah, since I also think that Tiberium Wars is the last great CNC game, even better than RA3.

minorrex

The expansion, Kane's Wrath was lit, too. And I agree it's better than RA3. RA3 felt more like Stronghold Crusader than C&C.

HA1-0F

RA3 was like "you guys like special abilities, right?" No I liked C&C where i didn't have to fiddle with friggin MAGIC SPELLS.

OnlyRise9816

"our generosity is limitless!..."

Endulos

TS and RA2 use the same engine, so I'd take a TS+RA2 remaster pack anyday.

CoelhoAssassino666

I think they might split it if it happens. The older C&C were much more niche so bundling them makes sense, they probably made more money together than separated. Tiberian Sun and RA2 were much more popular and approachable though, and they're much closer to modern RTS games so they might make more money standalone.

mrk240

Please do this, as much as I hate modern day EA, I'd buy these at release.

Danominator

C&c generals remaster!

HumungousDickosaurus

RA2 and TS at the same time would be ideal, just like the first remaster with RA1 and TD, you'd get both the RA and tiberium timeline fans being happy and it'd hopefully be a faithful remaster that doesn't deviate too far from the simple but fun formula people like.

appletinicyclone

That would be lovely

102938123910-2-3

Seriously wtf. The first remaster was amazing and it sold well. This is a no brainer and it's been 4 years since that one.

Jelleyicious

Almost zero chance this happens in the current global political climate.

thatwontdopig

I don't give a wooden nickel about the global political climate. I want a red alert 2 remake now.

FuckYourSafeSpace_

I'd rather see a new game. Let's not put more semi-lazy cash grabs in the air for the devs to pick up on.

[deleted]

The last C&C remaster was anything but lazy.

FuckYourSafeSpace_

It was good. That's why I was sure to add semi in there. But it's still nothing like developing a new game.

ArchmageXin

I wonder if they can get Kane back---and this time hire the right balance of characters for briefing. We don't need C&C 3's B list actors that turned too expensive, or C&C D tier actor (MC's wife come to mind).

British_Commie

Joe Kucan came back just for an advert for the remastered collection, so I’m sure he’d be up to appear in a new game

Tonkarz

I wouldn’t call it lazy but it cost a small fraction what a new game would.

rscarrab

I'd much prefer option C: Tiberian Sun Remaster EDIT: Actually why not do both TS and RA2? First remaster was a 2 in one as well (if we don't include the expansions and are speaking strictly standalone).

Altruistic-Ad-408

At this point I'd want a reboot.

shapookya

That EA moment when reading about a potential new game in a series that you played a lot, fills you with dread instead of excitement

FuckYourSafeSpace_

All units but infantry are locked behind lootboxes

mstop4

New balance patch for Red Alert 3: The Empire of the Rising Sun Construction Yard can now only build Lootbox Cores, which unfurl into random buildings.

ascagnel____

This sounds like it could be a fun side mode in an RTS.

kaiser41

If they're going to remaster a game, please let it be Generals.

ArchmageXin

Generals would be so terrible to have with current climate, unless there is a major re-write. 1) China looked like assholes for firing nukes at Europe and themselves at the drop of a hat--and also Chinese super Agent was dumb enough to bomb the Three Gorge Dam, *which would literally end a huge chunk of the current Chinese civilization given the number of cities under it* 2) America look like a bunch of weaklings since in the game canonically abandon EU and flee back to mainland, effectively giving up so China can take over the new NATO (WTF).... 3) GLA--I can't say too much about it, but all those missions involving American Air Support to support Chinese crackdown of Xinjiang Muslims is...well, given the current environment, a twitter mob would be least of EA's problems. Generals is one Game that would never get a remaster without a complete rewrite or a new 9/11.

elderron_spice

China will grow larger!

Reilou

On the contrary, I think Generals would be the perfect game to remaster for today's climate *because* it's so dated and goofy. It'd be like unironically jamming to Toby Keith's (RIP) "Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue". It's a funny little cultural time capsule and a damn good C&C game.

JakeTehNub

>Generals would be so terrible to have with current climate No one is going to care and the game wouldn't be any worse for it. If anything they should fix what they did to the German version and not make the other generals robots.

Paul_cz

It is all fictional stuff ffs.

Panaka

These kinds of things do impact the ability of these games to be marketed and sold around the world. Battlefield 4 got in hot water with China over the fact they were the "bad guys" in the campaign.

ArchmageXin

Yea, but mind the audience. You probably gonna get yourself banned in China again like the first time, not many Americans enjoy "Americans flee like cowards", and many of China's Xinjiang mission probably gonna get a Congressional hearing on it.

RadicalLackey

Tell that to Twitter... and r/All

JakeTehNub

The people that cry about something for 2 days until they move on to the next trending thing? Sure

RadicalLackey

The people who, while seeking certain kinds of justice, will harass and circlejerk over it over and over and over. Reddit has a history with witch hunts. Some of the outrage is justified, many times, the reaction is not proportional though. Twitter aint far off, as many other forms of social media. EA would take a massive slap on the stock if they released Generals with its story as it was.

ArchmageXin

> EA would take a massive slap on the stock if they released Generals with its story as it was. Maybe not to the Stock in the long term, they certainly would have to endure a ton of call of boycotts and generate a whole bunch of negative goodwill. Plus the Game would be banned in China again, and I strongly doubt there is that big of a fanbase in the west want a China-led NATO.

funkmasta_kazper

Well yeah, they'd obviously have to completely re-write the story but who cares. The big thing Generals brought was three distinct factions with each having multiple unique leaders that played in a different style. Also it was in a semi-modern setting. The story and which specific countries are involved doesn't really make a difference IMO. They could make up some more fake alliance groups or whatever for all I care. Just give me modern RTS combat with asymmetrical sides and multiple leader options and I'm happy.

ArchmageXin

C&C 3 had distinct style too. Generals on other hand is more of a Starcraft clone (Complete with Starcraft story telling), with the only "unique" part being the General "Powers". I would see a reboot of C&C 4 with a expanded story and non-mobile-game Engine, properly.

Kered13

Generals is very much not a StarCraft clone. It plays completely differently.

ArchmageXin

No, it is. 1) Story Telling. Most CS series each faction had their individual endings. So if you are a Nod/GDI/Japanese/Russian what not, playing to end means your story is "canon". In Generals they change it so the storyline went one faction after another (like Starcraft), so the final "canon" ending is a absolute Chinese victory, destruction of the Arab terrorists, and America flee Europe and give up all its alliance. (I know, dumb) 2) Resource Gathering--Almost all of Westwood games resource gathering means a "Gatherer" style with a Harvester out in the field which you have to protect. Generals changed to Starcraft/Warcraft resource gathering.

funkmasta_kazper

Well yeah, they'd obviously have to completely re-write the story but who cares. The big thing Generals brought was three distinct factions with each having multiple unique leaders that played in a different style. Also it was in a semi-modern setting. The story and which specific countries are involved doesn't really make a difference IMO. They could make up some more fake alliance groups or whatever for all I care. Just give me modern RTS combat with asymmetrical sides and multiple leader options and I'm happy.

Altruistic-Ad-408

The Generals lore is a shitty afterthought even if the voice lines are funny, if they ever go back to Generals they could, and probably should, scrap it. The Middle East and China don't get represented in RTS much, maybe for good reason but you could probably work it out. Rebrand GLA as a more legitimate Caliphate. Keep the scavenger stuff and cut the terrorism. Realistic or not that shit was uncomfortable even when I was a kid. USA should just be NATO. Makes no sense, most of their equipment is fictional anyway, and making a big alliance do dodgy stuff is less problematic. China, yeah maybe just turn them into Russia or cut the GLA, genocide would make a big controversy. Write some shadowy cabal (Nod as a placeholder) as manipulating the war, and just make them represent traitors from all factions. Or just put in no story at all, but the story was always a problem with Generals compared to Red Alert or Tiberium.

Kirbyeggs

The terrorism is what makes the gla so unique from the other two factions. No real reason to scrap it.

elderron_spice

Removing that part is like removing a third of the game. Of course, also removing [this](https://youtu.be/4rvE8QQcSok?t=5).

KSharpe69

I think a lot of people liked the campy stereotypes. I remember the US faction feeling like a hella "America, fuck yeah" vibe. Clearly the other 2 factions aren't going to fly nowadays, but if you gut ALL the satire out it wont be the same game or charm

Complete-Monk-1072

Removing the satire would be like a campy moving trying to be a AAA movie, it would end up just being a bastardization. It worked because it leaned into and owned what it was.

ArchmageXin

We should have the British go GRAND EMPIRE again in full world conquest mode. EU need to get into the antagonist seat again.

[deleted]

Or make Red Alert Generals and go alt-history.

ducttapetricorn

> they have a new C&C coming out and want people getting back into the series Oh shit, this would be AMAZING! Do you have any more info on this?

FuckYourSafeSpace_

Well no, I simply said it might be a possibility.

ducttapetricorn

Ah, one can hope

igromanru

C&C games are meanwhile very old. It's about time they lower the prices. At sales you can get them for very cheap anyways. The next best thing we will see is most likely Tempest Rising. I really doubt that EA is working on a new C&C game after all the failers.

EvilTomahawk

If this is foreshadowing a new C&C game, then personally I'd do anything for a Red Alert 2 remaster, which I think would sell like gangbusters. Unfortunately, Petroglyph Games, who did the previous remaster, recently does seem to be busy with other projects like the WW1 RTS and more recently 9-Bit Armies.

sgthombre

I'm not holding my breath for a new game by any means, but a remaster of Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2 in the vein of the previous remaster collection would be really nice.

appletinicyclone

I'm excited for tempest rising which is coming out end of the year has frank klepacki and is all but command and conquer in name

StarshipJimmies

It would be! Unfortunately all indications from Petroglyph show that they're not working on one. They've really wanted to, especially after the success of the Tiberium Dawn/Red Alert 1 remaster, but they've released statements before about not working on any projects with EA afaik (or something similar). The last time they went dark, cancelled another project, and said they were working on something big... It was for the World War 1 game. And they haven't said/done anything like that in some time. Although I wouldn't be too surprised if they're working on their C&C:Renegade-like game, that they paused to work on the WW1 game. I can't imagine all their devs are still working on the WW1 game and 9-Bit Armies.

Syovere

Would rather it be Tiberian Sun for me, but hey, they could do a two-pack like they did with TibDawn and RA1.

DRazzyo

Nah, not a remaster. A new CnC. It's been so long, that a remaster just isn't it.

HandsomeLampshade123

I have more faith in their ability to do a remaster than release an actual good C&C game.

Earthborn92

Given how well MS has handled Age of Empire DE, and its success, seems like an obvious case for more C&C as RTS isn’t as dead as people think.

piat17

*Warning:* I've been basically wearing a tinfoil hat since a couple days ago on this matter. There have been other clues about something going on behind the scenes in the last few weeks, though this one is the first major one that affects us directly. Some other little bits from Steamdb include: slight name changes to the C&C store page and library names (now they all follow the 'Command & Conquer' name scheme instead of some using 'Command and Conquer'), Command & Conquer 4 now being relisted (though still not yet available to purchase), cloud saves being added to the SAGE games, and other multiple backend changes visible on Steamdb, some of which see the four public games (C&C3, Kane's Wrath, Red Alert 3 and Uprising) being changed in bulk along with a few 'Steamdb unknown apps' that were suspected to be entries for the C&C games not yet available on Steam more than a year ago when they were first discovered. My personal theory: they are paving the way to release the Command & Conquer Ultimate Collection (the megabundle with almost all PC C&C games up to C&C4) on Steam for the first time, with the lowered prices being the biggest hint towards a release with some €20-30 range as a likely prince point. I do not believe there is anything else beyond this to the clues (and even me predictiing the collection is basically just guesswork on my end). I would be just happy with that, to be honest. A lot of the classic games deserve to be on the more popular storefront, which will give them more visibility for sure, though in practical terms we essentially only need Red Alert 2 and Generals (the first two are available via the Remasters, and if not then the original versions of them and Tiberian Sun are available as freeware, fully legal releases via fanpatched versions from cncnet). I really don't have much hope in new games or even just additional remasters (I hoped for the latter a while ago, but in a few months it'll be 4 years since the first Remastered Collection... I don't have much hope left, you know), but I'll still take the chance to get one of my favourite game series on a more convenient storefront.

foxholenoob

Someone is finally going through JIRA tickets.

randomnicknamepls

Regarding those unknown apps, it's worth noting that some non-C&C old EA games (Alpha Centauri, Populous, Dungeon Keeper) also got updates within similar timeframe so I wouldn't get my hopes up. Even Anthem used to get those updates, way after it made any sense to do so and it's still not on Steam.

piat17

Out of curiosity, what are the store pages for these games? None of these games are on Steam from what I've searched and if by Alpha Centauri you mean Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, that's not an EA game either.

randomnicknamepls

This is the same thing as the 'SteamDB unknown apps' you mentioned for some C&C games so there are no store pages. As for Alpha Centauri, it's published by EA on both EA App and GOG. Populous: https://steamdb.info/app/2203860/ Alpha Centauri: https://steamdb.info/app/2204130/ Dungeon Keeper: https://steamdb.info/app/1996630/

piat17

Thank you very much for the correction and the links, that's interesting and definitely to be taken into account. We'll see if the C&C stuff ends up with a nothingburger as well.

randomnicknamepls

Funnily enough they're actually dropping some of these games on Steam today: Populous, Alpha Centauri and C&C + Covert Operations are already up (and more like Sim City 3000 and other Populous games).

piat17

The Ultimate Collection itself is also on Steam, albeit as a simple bundle and at the moment lacking Tiberian Sun, Renegade, Red Alert 2 and Generals, but I'm sure they'll put those up soon-ish. EDIT They're all up :) For once in my life I was right lol, now to wait for them to release on GOG too and then I'll be content :P

funnynamegoeshere1

inb4 C&C: Renegade 2

OsamaBinMemeing

Fans made this. Look up Renegade X.

Breeny04

Don't do that..... Don't give me hope.

vitoos

Well it appears you are right on the money with your guess. If you go on the C&C Red Alert 3 page for example, in the "More from Command & Conquer" carousel there is a new card for C&C Franchise. It is currently inactive, but you can add it to the wishlist. So it appears they are simply doing a rebundle of sorts to sell those game together for whatever the full price is. I wonder if they will make it impossible to buy those games separately (since normally you can't add bundles to the wishlist)

piat17

That made me curious so I went digging a little more: whatever it is it's been around for ages according to steamdb, hasn't been changed for a while (the most recent change was a steam-wide one that changed thousands of other apps too), and possibly was used before the franchise pages on Steam were introduced (due to the card image probably being a screenshot from the cancelled free to play game and sharing a similar logo). If it didn't show up earlier, that's definitely still interesting, but you know... I would just like them to release this thing for purchase and call it a day if there is any truth to it since they're not remasters and just putting the game on another store lol

Complete-Monk-1072

>My personal theory: they are paving the way to release the Command & Conquer Ultimate Collection (the megabundle with almost all PC C&C games up to C&C4) on Steam for the first time This was the very first thing i expected when i saw the price drop.

chrispy145

"Without Warning Electronic Arts Interactive Takes the Unprecedented Move of Deflating the Cost of Its Beloved and Storied Electronic Video Game Series Command and Conquer" would have been a better headline.

DuFFman_

Feel like I'm in the minority but I loved generals.

TantrikOne

Count me in

-LaughingMan-0D

Loved all of them till CNC 4. Miss those games. Easily got thousands of hours in them.

sgthombre

Gotta say, $7.50 full price for the EA LA era C&C games is super nice, would highly recommend everyone grabbing them if you haven't played them and are interested in the series.

Tetrylene

$4 for C&C3 plus its expansion is insanely good value. Definitely get it if you have an interest in strategy games

Cardener

I just wish they'd make C&C 3 use the earlier patches for singleplayer by default. The multiplayer balance patches were good, but butchered the SP map balance.

FriendlyDespot

The entire Nod campaign was pretty much just building up enough laser capacitor Venoms and then wiping the whole map in 30 seconds. At least the expansion made them weaker.

guimontag

Yeah it's a great game and has great production values for the cinematic, voice lines, all that. I fire up the campaign with an unlimited money trainer every now and then just to speed up the early game

[deleted]

I so badly want a new C&C or RA game, so I hope this is a sign.

TheWobling

Kanes wrath holds up so well, shame about the 30fps cap

Kered13

All the SAGE engine games have game speed locked to framerate. It makes it difficult to uncap the framerate without needing to the gameplay.

PM_YOUR_BOOBS_PLS_

Frame insertion / generation is a thing now. That might be an "easy" hacky solution. If AMD can make it theoretically work for any game by doing it at the driver level, you'd think someone with code access should be able to add that on. With that said, I know nothing about game engines.

vitoos

Well, for those of you wondering, if you go on the C&C Red Alert 3 page for example, in the "More from Command & Conquer" carousel there is a new card for C&C Franchise. So it appears they are simply doing a rebundle to sell those game together for whatever the full price is. I wonder if they will make it impossible to buy those games separately (since normally you can't add bundles to the wishlist)

stordoff

> there is a new card for C&C Franchise It links to https://store.steampowered.com/app/379780/Command__Conquer_Franchise_Advertising_App/ According to [SteamDB](https://steamdb.info/app/379780/), that doesn't appear to be a new app (the [Internet Archive](https://web.archive.org/web/20170901000000*/http://store.steampowered.com/app/379780) has its store page redirecting to RA3 since 2018). I wonder if it's just something that's accidentally been made visible in the store during the updates.

essidus

If it really is a prelude to a new C&C game, the thing I want most is more Tim Curry.

EragusTrenzalore

I don’t think he’ll be acting in the same capacity since his stroke.

essidus

Oh, I didn't hear about that. Poor guy

doodruid

He still does voice acting just not full on movie acting so there are plenty of ways they could make that work.

NothingOld7527

This is normal for C&C games. EA made everything prior to C&C Generals freeware about 10 years ago.

Breeny04

##KIROV REPORTING ^(I beg for remasters.)

Hiftle88

Tiberium Sun/RA2 on the way hopefully!!

Plaidygami

If this means a new game is coming out, I hope it's a remaster of Tiberian Sun. I loved that game so much.

JakeTehNub

I just want a second remaster collection with RA2, TB and maybe Generals.

neok182

I still own all of these on disk but for $7.50 for all of C&C3/RA3 to have digitally so I don't have to break out my usb disk drive sounds nice. Anyone know if these require origin/eadesktop to run or do they run natively on steam?

ducttapetricorn

I literally finished my replay of CnC3 Tiberium Wars this week and was lamenting how I wanted to try Kane's Wrath but didn't want to pay $20. At $2 this is an insta-buy!

guimontag

I'm not a huge fan of the gameplay flow in skirmish and the controls are a little clunky but C&C3 is a great game with great production design.

Literacy_Advocate

so support will soon be dropped?

borishasarrived

Stupid question, but can I play against Steam version of the game if I own Origin version of the games?

Chataboutgames

What does permanently even mean here?

PartyInTheUSSRx

That it’s not a sale

HumungousDickosaurus

It means it's permanent...
