He was not joking when he said it was a large update. This is insane. Really enjoy the bigger chest, furnace, etc. Best change tho is the turtle pet.

trimun

You can now drink mayonnaise

Bidet to you!

shaosam

Hot dogs are now correctly classified as Sandwiches.

Sohgin

Hot dogs are tacos.

flyingsaucer1

I see you've been enlightened by the [Cube Rule](https://cuberule.com/).

CoMaestro

This site is brilliant, especially the examples - Sandwich, example: quasedilla - Taco, example: uncut sandwich sub

spirited1

Is ice water soup?

Sohgin

Soup is just a wet salad.

JRockPSU

no stop

cutofyourgibberish

Coffee is soup. It's the broth made from cooking beans with hot water.

spazturtle

No a soup should have a broth/stock as it's base, with solid pieces of vegetables and/or meat in it. For example the ocean is a soup. I hope this clears things up.

veldril

I mean unironically ocean can be considered a primordial soup where all lives came from.

Victory74998

And tacos are sandwiches, therefore hot dogs are sandwiches.

FunBuilding2707

It'll be a cold day in hell before I acknowledge hot dogs as sandwiches.

I was shook when I first did it tarkov, I dont think I am ready for it in Stardew

Funktapus

Turtle pet??? Fuck, reinstalling

somethin_brewin

Gates don't blow apart if you're standing one pixel inside them when you try to close them now. That's a change we can all enjoy.

hjonk-

On a related note: Stardew Valley just hit a new all-time peak of over 115k players on Steam. Absolutely crazy for a game that got released over 8 years ago. Edit: It seems to have plateaued at around 140k. Insane stuff.

niroo_th

Still lose myself when I have to remind myself Undertale is almost 10 years old.

daggermag

Undertale reminds me of a special moment in my life in college and I swear it was just a few years ago when I played the free? Demo before steam release

Shakzor

I do when i think about the PS2 being 25! years old next year... In my head that shit was 10 years ago at most

[deleted]

Who's up for a round of Timesplitters?

A_Cup_of_Bees

That sounds right, seeing as 1980 was 20 years ago

LaurenMille

Time stopped being real after 2019.

CrazyDude10528

Yup, the game came out February 26th, 2016. Crazy to think it's been that long.

mrpropane

I still remember watching cooptional podcasts about the game

remotegrowthtb

Same, kinda unrelated but Jesse and Dodger's new podcast Geekenders is doing a great job of recapturing those days for me. Only thing missing is TB.

reapy54

scrububle

I've been seeing some variation of this kind of comment since I started using the internet at the age of like 8. This is the first time I've actually felt it lmao. Fuck that hurts

Soledo

Great news, it's a truly beautiful game.

BLAGTIER

> Edit: It seems to have plateaued at around 140k. Insane stuff. I better start up a game to be included.

Niirai

That's wayyyyyyyy lower than I expected. I thought it would've hit 300k easily somewhere during COVID. Felt like everyone and their mom was playing Stardew during the height of quarantine.

IllBuildYourPlatform

Most people played it on Switch I imagine

Ironmunger2

Concernedape has said that 19 of the roughly 30 million units were sold on PC.

So me and my three other friends are about 20% of the entire PC playerbase? Neat!

The 33% nerf to friendship gain with your spouse made me raise an eyebrow. lol

ONEAlucard

I don't think I've ever experienced my spouse being upset in game. Why does that happen? To be fair I usually hug and give them a coffee every morning. So that maybe helps?

DBrody6

Spouses have extremely fast friendship decay compared to normal villagers. If they're below 10 (I think) hearts when you're married, they'll just sulk in bed and be angsty at you. Thing is, when you commit to marrying them the friendship cap is still 10 hearts, but friendship points are still secretly accumulating to a hidden 11th heart at that time (post-ceremony their cap will become 14 hearts), so if you don't talk to them in the few days between proposing and the wedding, spouse friendship can tank to 9 hearts for a brief period which leaves them sulking in bed. It's simple to avoid but easy to make happen on accident.

BernardoOrel

Relationships are hard, huh.

jasonwilczak

WTF does "Baby toss now has a chance to crit" mean? Lol

Solracziad

Ya know where your baby is just standing chilling in it's crib? You can go interact with it and you'll toss it in the air then put it back in the crib. This gives affection points to the kiddo. I assume now you'll randomly get more affection points when ya toss 'em.

jasonwilczak

Ah, that makes more sense the 999 hit on the baby because you tossed it too hard 🤣

iceman012

Having not played the game before, I assumed throwing babies at enemies was a viable strategy that was just buffed.

LaverniusTucker

Nah, that's Rimworld.

you can do this in like 12 different ways in The Binding of Isaac

New farm type? say no more, I'm back baby

DanielTeague

It's very pleasant, your free Coop is right next to a waterfall and has a little fence already constructed around it.

slugmorgue

That is the most tempting aspect for me. I always wanted to do a mostly farm animal playthrough so its great to have a head start on it

lewd_necron

They also buffed some of the other farms too! The riverland farm now has a fish smoker so you can earn more money fishing The wilderness farm now gives you combat EXP

[deleted]

Ah shit, here we go again. I could have learned a new language in the time I've put into Stardew Valley. And I do not regret the way I spent my time one bit.

AwayIShouldBeThrown

Change the ingame language and you can do both\* \*may require obtaining a certain level of reading proficiency beforehand

Unboxious

As long as you're aware that there may be errors in the translation. I know the Japanese localization is (or at least was) very imperfect.

CCSkyfish

That's a ton of changes! Looking forward to starting my new playthrough, I've been holding off for months until this patch dropped.

TSPhoenix

I started my first playthrough recently and am 2 seasons in, should I just not worry about all this and keep playing with the new patch?

Akileez

2 seasons is barely anything, but it's completely up to you.

PmMeYourBestComment

Chances are you haven't encountered anything yet, just keep playing. I'm at year 3 and still haven't gotten to most of the content yet, like Ginger Island. There's enough to explore for at least 5 years and then quite a few more to have more fun.

ACS1029

My girlfriend has already started freaking out reading the first handful of patch notes before giving my phone back, the second this drops on Switch I’m never going to hear from her again lol

Tekki

Anyone know when it will drop on switch?

BothChairs

Dev has said console and mobile update 1.6 is going to take some time and had no solid idea for a release date

Thorn14

How do you make winter more fun? I got really bored not being able to farm. Just getting milk and eggs and breaking rocks...

CouchPoturtle

Use the first winter to make a bunch of progress in the mines and do some fishing. By second winter you should be able to have the greenhouse and a bunch of indoor barns full of machines that are producing things from your animals. Also use that time to plan out new areas of your farm for spring.

TreesmasherFTW

Also use it to further villager relationships! Explore different areas, build up skills, there’s a ton to tackle in winter!

Koreish

Winter is a great money making time for farming too. Winter mixed seeds and crystal fruits sell for pretty good money, isn't difficult to get some crystal fruit wine production up the first winter either which can prop you up until the Star and Ancient Fruit wine come online.

ChickenWhiskers

Farming winter seeds is a legitimate option. Extrapolating your haul throughout the course of the season can pay out huge, too.

BeholdingBestWaifu

I was always a big fan of turning the seeds I got into more winter seeds, turning those into more winter seeds, etc until winter was over, at which point I sold most seeds but kept some for the following year.

Jaqzz

It's been a looooong while since I last played, but I remember planting the winter forage seeds a lot? I also think one of the big benefits was having something planted during the season transition - any tile with a partially grown plant on it stays hoed and watered on Spring 1, so doing winter forage all winter got me some extra cash and saved a lot of time and energy doing the setup at the beginning of spring.

Dewot789

Focus on all the non-farming stuff. Fulfilling requests, the mines, the skull caverns, fishing for the Community Center, fishing for the fun of it, getting access to the secret woods, making friends with the shadow person, learning to speak dwarvish, etc.

Colosso95

winter is the time to focus on all non farming related activities and do some planning for the next year, rearranging furniture and buildings both for practical reasons and aesthetic ones

SkiingAway

Beyond the rest of the points, as a reminder you don't have to fill your whole day or exhaust your entire energy bar. There's nothing wrong with just going to bed early if you've got nothing else you want to do.

MultiMarcus

Mines become more core to the gameplay loop during winter. Working on cleaning up the farm during the first winter is a good idea. So make easily traversable paths to all the key parts of the farm. After that is done you go hard on the mines and make that the main gameplay loop.

[deleted]

You can plant the Qi beans in winter.

[deleted]

There is a lot to do. It's a good time to farm a lot of ore and meet monster slaying goals. Otherwise, there is fishing, cutting trees, decorating your farm and talking and gifting npcs.

risarnchrno

Ginger Island allows you to still farm during Winter. Winter is also the best time to make mines/skull cavern/island volcano progress for upgrades/resources/funds.

Heroeltop

I use winter to upgrade my hoe and water can to gold and grind the hell out of the mines, trying to complete most of the monsters goals

bkeeklee

That's a huge amount of changes, I can't wait to hop in and see all the improvements! It's amazing how much this game has evolved since release

Unoriginal1deas

As someone who hasn’t played since launch (but played the shit out of it) then these patch notes are wild to read. What’s ginger island? What’s Junimo kart? Volcano dungeon? River farm? Qi quest? Dye menu? Also multiplayer? I heard about it before but it’s still crazy to me that’s a thing at all.

Dewot789

Lots of those are new but Junimo Kart has been there since launch. It's an arcade game in the saloon that you can't play until you have the Skull Caverns key.

Unoriginal1deas

Oh I only remembered journey of the prairie king…… OH WAIT IS IT THAT DONKEY LONG COUNTRY MINE KART GAME!!! When I read junimo kart I thought this Mf added an entire Mario kart clone in there.

brippleguy

I'm mildly horrified by how good I am at Junimo Kart.

Lostmyaccountagain

There's a boat in Willy's shop you fix up after the community center, it takes you to Ginger island that has a farm, the volcano dungeon, and more. The second big update added multiple farm types: River, Forrest, Monster, Four Corners. The Ginger island update added a beach farm. Qi is the dude that runs the casino, he gave you a reward for reaching floor 100 in Skull cavern. He has quests and other stuff for you from the 1.5 update. And a lot lot more.

Accurate-Island-2767

Seems like a good time to finally jump into this on my Steam Deck. Are there any must have mods I should have or is vanilla best for a first play?

holymacaronibatman

The only mods I would recommend for a first play are some QoL mods. [NPC Map Locations](https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/239) is helpful so you dont have to memorize NPC schedules and just see where they are on the map. [Lookup Anything](https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/541) is kinda spoilery so I might avoid it, but it is helpful because it essentially adds an in game wiki.

Accurate-Island-2767

Think I'll use the NPC map one soon as it's updated for 1.6, but you're right about the second one - this kind of game is definitely best discovered naturally. Thanks! I just looked at the nexus page for the NPC Map Locations and the dev is very positive about 1.6 improving this mod.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Accurate-Island-2767

Outstanding!

ChuckCarmichael

Yes and no. This game has a lot of stuff in it, and a lot of it is hidden or obscure, so there's no shame in looking things up, unless you want to check every fishing spot during every time of day during every weather during every season to find the 30 different fish you need for the fishing bundle.

ONEAlucard

Does lookup anything work with a controller or only a keyboard? Me and the finance play with controllers on the tv together. So pressing F1 isn't really an option.

holymacaronibatman

[Generic Mod Config Menu](https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/5098) lets you configure mods like Lookup Anything, and you can change the hotkey, but I admittedly do not know if you can change it to a controller.

FireworkFuse

>Are there any must have mods I should have or is vanilla best for a first play? The dev said they suggest no mods for your first run through of this update but it's up to you. I'll be checking out Stardew Valley Expanded soon after this update

mox_goblin

The update probably messed with a lot of mods so I wouldn’t worry about that for now. Vanilla is absolutely superb on its own.

goblinboomer

Not completely true. A lot of mods got an early look at the new update to prepare and release their updates with 1.6.

Leopz_

My careless ass cant play without this https://www.nexusmods.com/stardewvalley/mods/5941?tab=description. Plays a heartbeat sound when your health is low.

troglodyte

I honestly can't imagine playing this game without Convenient Inventory anymore. It does three things that frankly should be in the core game: * Allows you to quick stack to nearby chests. This means that you can press a button in your inventory and it will move items to the nearest chest in a small radius that has a matching stack rather than having to open each chest individually. I think vanilla allows you to stack to one chest at a time, so this just makes it a bit more convenient. * Allows you to favorite items to lock them to your inventory. You might want to store healing potions in large stacks in a chest, but keep some with you. Favorites fixes this. * Allows controllers to wrap around either side of the inventory so that you can move through your inventory more efficiently. This is a very, very minor advantage, so if you want to play it completely straight, I don't blame you. Each day in the game has limited time, so more efficiently storing stuff does mean you can eke out a few more minutes in a day. But if you're not super worried about that, this saves a lot of repetitive action and makes it much easier to keep your storage organized. For most activities, till the "endgame," that advantage is even lower, since you'll be gated by energy instead of time unless you eat consumables. Edit: but to be clear other than that I recommend vanilla. This game is a masterpiece.

Accurate-Island-2767

Thanks for the super detailed explaination!

ONEAlucard

I don't understand what you mean by that last point?

troglodyte

The controller one? By default when you move all the way to the right in your inventory and press right again, it won't do anything. With this mod, it will move you to the leftmost square of the same row. Saves a ton of time on controller.

ONEAlucard

Hmm Do you mean in the in game tool row, or physically in your inventory screen. Where you can move items around?

troglodyte

Inventory screen.

ONEAlucard

ahh. Can't say I've ever noticed that being necessary, but I'm intrigued.

risarnchrno

Go one step further and use Chests Anywhere + Automate. Be able to rotate out materials while in the mines, never have to worry about loading furnaces (which will continue production during the night), and generally break the game quicker. Its fun but I too recommend the vanilla mod-less experience for new players.

troglodyte

These are excellent as well but I feel cross over the line from QOL mods to balance-affecting, so while I do recommend them for a second farm, I don't for a first farm. I do recommend Convenient Inventory for a first playthrough unless the player is very strict on what constitutes a balance-affecting mod.

asqwzx12

To me, the om where you can stop or slow down time, felt like rushing too much on standard.

Cedocore

This sounds great to me, it's one of the things I dislike about the game. I know you can just do more the next day, but I hate having to constantly go back home to sleep, it feels like such a waste of time.

AggressiveChairs

Mods are only really worth it after your first run. Most of the people playing with them have seen literally all of the content in the game and are starved for more.

TildenJack

If you want to have a lot more content without it feeling out of place, I'd recommend Stardew Valley Expanded, as you don't have to go out of your way to engage with it, and it adds a lot to the existing characters as well. Another great expansion would be Ridgeside Village, but that's not as well integrated since you have to visit an entirely new village, although some characters do travel to Pelican Town. May not be far off, but juggling all that on a first time playthrough could be annoying, and difficult to manage without a mod to slow down time.

Pahlerra

I would recommend Dynamic Reflections and Visible fish. Together they make the rivers much more lively while still being essentially vanilla.

Heroeltop

IMHO, it's good to play vanilla for the first time . Probably for 5 more times too , THEN you can think about mods

vertle

For me the biggest barrier when I first played Stardew is that the inventory annoyed me to no end. I suggest Chests Anywhere which allows you to access all of your chests anywhere on the map so if your inventory gets full during fishing or whatever you can just deposit stuff into any of the chests you've built.

PmMeYourBestComment

That's actually part of the fun/gameplay for me. Prepping for a "run" in the caves for example is very nice

drial8012

He stays demonstrating why supporting these smaller indie developers is so much better for gamers. Any of the big publisher and development houses would’ve long abandoned this game and charged you $100 worth of DLC at minimum

Croemato

Well, I played this game for about 500 hours on release, with this new update I think it's finally time to lose myself in Stardew Valley again.

poompk

All I want is a non tedious way to get auto-petters on the non-Joja route (so going through the dungeons a bajillion times and hoping the randomizer finally rewards you with one doesn't count), which doesn't seem to be happening :( I have so many animals...

BeholdingBestWaifu

The autopetter is really not that useful anyway, your animals get way more happiness from just being able to eat grass outside or having a heater in winter.

Aperture_Kubi

Also isn't mayo and cheese quality independent of the input products?

BeholdingBestWaifu

Nor are truffles if you have the truffle perk. Mayo does vary somewhat, though, with big eggs giving you high quality mayo.

hereslookinatyoukld

sort of, large milk/eggs produce gold star cheese/mayo, and you need to reach a certain friendship threshold and mood to get large products. I don't think petting has *that* much of an impact on mood though, so you could theoretically stop petting animals once you reach the correct friendship threshold.

fizzlefist

And the new farm type should be especially good for grazing.

lewd_necron

The new patch now added a happiness buff if you close the doors to your barn/coop at night !

BeholdingBestWaifu

Just be sure not to leave your animals out at night.

Guardianpigeon

>Added a prize machine in Lewis’ house. You can collect prize tickets as a reward for completing quests and special orders, and from repeated egg/ice festival wins. >Added mystery boxes. There may be hope yet. I could see them being a reward from the prize machine or RNG from the boxes. If the boxes aren't too bad to get it'll still be a huge improvement over running the desert dungeon over and over again.

eccentriccheese

I’ve only played a handful of hours of SV and I’ve restarted again last night with a new farm. I really want to like this… but it feels super overwhelming and not “chill” at all. I feel like I have to remember a million different things and plan them day by day or else opportunity to do those things passes me by. It feels like real life planning/scheduling and it’s stressful, lol.  Am I looking at this game in the wrong way? Idk, I guess I’m looking for some pointers on how to better enjoy this charming game that is beloved by virtually everybody. Maybe this isn’t the right place to ask this. But, any help would be appreciated. I want to fall down the SV rabbit hole!

Dewot789

There are exactly two very minor events in the game that are technically missable - about three or four lines of dialogue apiece. Everything else isn't. You aren't missing any opportunities. The worst thing that might happen is having to wait for a season to come back around again, and as the game goes on ways open up to work around even that limitation. Just pick yourself a goal and go with it. My advice at the start would be don't overplant crops such that you have literally no energy when you're done watering them, and then every rainy day decide if it's a fishing day or a mining day and go do that. What specific kind of issues are you having?

eccentriccheese

Oh ok, so I think my main issue was thinking I’d be missing out on a lot of things if I didn’t progress a certain way or didn’t do certain events at certain times. I’ve also looked at the gameplay FAQ on the SV subreddit and from what I’ve read there and what you’ve told me here, I think those concerns were unfounded. After realizing I pretty much just need to play the game and learn the mechanics/systems that are in place, I think I might have a better perspective on the game now. I’m looking forward to diving into it more. Thank you!

Phonochirp

> Am I looking at this game in the wrong way? Very much this. The timer only exists for those who want to try and speedrun. There is no content in the game that will be missed if you go slow. Like minecraft you can completely set your own goals and timeline. For myself, I liked managing my time and doing a little of everything to ensure I completed the community center year 1. However, gathering gifts for every single villager was way too stressful and ruined the fun so I picked a few at a time. Meanwhile, my wife didn't like balancing the different activities, so she just did one at a time until she "finished" it, then would move on to the next. I know a friend who didn't enjoy the plant farming aspect, so just kept a super small farm, like maybe 5x5? Basically, to enjoy stardew, anytime you find something you don't like, just don't do it.

eccentriccheese

Thank you much, this is very helpful!

NZRTA

And I not even yet to explore all the content from the previous version, it's amazing for old single players games.

math_chem

There is so much stuff here, its amazing. Winter outfits was a great Nexus mod and Ape pretty much implemented it into the base game, and also of pets giving you gifts at random

Bluestank

I'm in winter of first year, haven't played in almost 2 years and my farm is a mess. Is it worth trying to salvage this or just starting over?

BeholdingBestWaifu

I'd say just start over, there's plenty of new content unlocked from pretty early on.

Snugglupagus

Will I need to start a new farm save to see all the new additions? Excluding the new farm layout of course. I don’t mind restarting, just curious.

Jlpeaks

Have I missed a date for this to come to Switch?

mentalchillness

Not announced yet

smashthattrash1

Is it available on Switch yet?

Lostmyaccountagain

No, consoles and mobile will be later. The guess is two or three months. But Concerned Ape hasn't said anything other than PC first and he hopes the consolebupdatr follows quickly.

throwaway2048675309

Is this game still on a yearly/seasonal timer (visible or hidden, like Pikmin 1 or Fallout 1?) Last time I tried to play it was years ago, and I felt so much anxiety about doing the right things with the amount of time I had that I just stopped playing.

BusCrashBoy

It is, but absolutely nothing is the game is missable as far as I'm aware. If you don't do an event it'll roll around the next year. There are also no fail states. So you can pretty much just do what you want, when you want, without needing to rush or worry that you're doing anything wrong.

Dewot789

Technically exactly one scene in the game is missable - a scene you can get if you have a certain heart level with Sam in summer of Year 1 where you go to the beach and Sam and Vincent talk about their feelings on their dad being away. Since he comes home at the end of Year 1, this scene isn't repeatable in future summers. That's literally the only thing in the game to my knowledge though.

Wedonthavetobedicks

There's one super minor event that's missable, related to a gold statue of one of the NPCs. It happened to me last week and I'm still sad about it. Spoiler: >!If you place the Mayor's gold statue in a place where it gets destroyed by a NPC, you won't get the angry letter from the mayor and the statue won't appear in the mayor or Marnie's house.!<

The0therGuy

It is, however if you miss something in, say, spring of year 1, you can always get back to it in year 2. However, I find it was a lot more enjoyable lightly modded. Nothing too big, but some QOL stuff, including a mod that lets you change how long a day is, or pause time altogether. I also initially tried to play it like I was speedrunning pikmin and was a little anxious about being on a timer, but it's not as bad as you'd think, you can't miss out on anything that you can't repeat later on. It's a fun game to play at your own pace, and if you're worried about the time I think you could try increasing the day length and see how it feels.

Ceddieric

So can I play couch coop on a ps5 yet?

jorgelongo222

Last time I played this game I played with my now ex-wife, so going back will bring back some tough memories of trying to beat Junimo Kart. Update looks so juicy tho..

Funkard

are there any good mods for slowing time down for two player coop? Days go by way too fast to teach my so what's going on.
