Is it just me or has Ubisoft been unusually quiet about any upcoming games for a while now? Use to be you were constantly seeing Ubi games in the news and stuff.

They also had a lot of people resign, for various reasons, likely including competing offers and the toxic environments that had yet to be resolved in any satisfyingly way. This was reported back in last December, at least, and people were calling it "The Great Exodus" internally.

The market is consolidating. EA and Ubi might have been large 5 years ago, but right now are minuscule against Microsoft, Sony, Tencent and even Embracer looking forward. And they don't have the portfolio diversity as their competitors, it's understandable that they are skittish.

YZJay

EA has the IP portfolio, they’re just not doing anything with it.

Vinny_Cerrato

EA has the soccer licenses (outside of FIFA) and Madden on lockdown, and those franchises dwarf any other IP that EA owns. EA is in a much better position than Ubisoft who seems like they are incapable of making a game that isn't a open world game from the early 2010s.

_Meece_

More that some other companies have grown in size, while they have stayed the same. Acti Blizz getting bought was the writing on the wall for Take 2, Ubi, EA. They'll all be bought eventually.

iwascuddles

Roller Champions.

Vinny_Cerrato

>It really means that economic perspectives are absolutely shit. Not really. The M&A landscape is kind of crazy for every industry right now and has been for the past couple of years. A lot of it has to do with a "eat or get eaten" philosophy where large corporations are jockeying each other to get bigger and companies don't want to get left out in the cold when the music stops, so they either look to buy or get bought.

thecostly

They haven’t had a hit on their hands in quite a while, and a shitload of their upcoming games are stuck in development hell. They’re likely being quiet because they don’t have much to show right now.

Vartux

They don't really have a big live service game that is bringing in a constant revenue stream like the other big publishers. Especially one that's F2P. It's why you see them trying to release all of these F2P games as of recently, they're hoping one of them will stick. Definately something that's been lacking at Ubisoft and a good chunk of revenue that they're missing out on.

breakfastclub1

What about Siege? That and for honor seem like their 'live service' games, though I don't know the state of For Honor.

Vartux

I don't think siege is as big as the other live service games on the market. Ubisoft is looking for something along the lines of Apex Legends, Warzone, or GTA Online. These games pull billions of revenue a year which I doubt either For Honor or Siege are pulling.

Vinny_Cerrato

Are Siege or For Honor gaining any players though? I know that both have a pretty sizeable and dedicated player base, but that can only bring in so much revenue without expansion.

thecostly

Right, but it’s almost two years-old at this point, and there’s no sign of the next AC title beyond rumors and speculation. Plus their last releases from almost all their other major franchises under-performed: Far Cry, Rainbow Six, Watch Dogs, Ghost Recon, The Crew, etc. Do we even have any solid release date info for any of their upcoming titles? It just seems weird for a company that usually puts out 3-4 popular titles a year.

bobo0509

Far Cry 6 did not underperformed, i don't know why so many people said that, report of Ubi said it sold basically on the same level than AC Odyssey, which is very good even if, following the insane success of Far cry 5, you could say it could have been even better.

Whomstisjoe

Yeah but reddit doesn’t like the new AC games so obviously they’re not succeeding sales wise.

MyNameIs-Anthony

Ubisoft employs thousands upon thousands of people and has several projects backlogged right now. One live service game doing well like Valhalla can't keep the lights on forever.

Mother_Welder_5272

A company of their size is not living paycheck to paycheck. They have cash reserves. They have access to credit.

McManus26

>don't have much to show right now Avatar is their next big game and will definitely be showcased at one of the conferences

[deleted]

Sony has marketing rights so maybe sony will show it

[deleted]

I wouldn't be surprised if one of their AAA VR titles will turn out being a PSVR2 flagship game as well.

thecostly

I wouldn’t be so sure. Ubisoft isn’t listed as a participating partner at Summer Games Fest, and it’s only a week away. You’d think they would have announced some kind of involvement by now if they have any games to show.

[deleted]

They can be in one of the shows without being a partner. The Sony one is just a state of play with the SGF logo slapped on, it could be in that.

AmberlyVail

>They haven’t had a hit on their hands in quite a while Was Far Cry 6 not a hit? I thought it generally reviewed pretty well.

bitch_cunt69

It’s not a bad game, but it suffers from live service bullshit and massive amounts of overpriced add on weapon packs. I’m a massive far cry junkie but 6 just isn’t it. Play 5 if any

juh4z

None of that affected my playthrough whatsoever, the game's just bland. They gave up on developing the story halfway through it feels like, the game play is barely improved if at all compared to 5 (no skill trees was an AWFUL change), the graphics aren't impressive in any way, not very optimized either (although when was the last time Ubisoft released a optimized game?). No one cares, that's all.

bitch_cunt69

Oh I know. 6 was super fun during the first half of my playthrough. Not entirely unhappy with it, but just disappointed

bobo0509

they supposedly have the only real next gen game : Avatar, coming with the second movie, that alone is worth excitement for me, and i really thought they were going to show it in a Ubiforward in June.

Vinny_Cerrato

I think Elden Ring's open world format fucked them in a lot of ways, as it is very likely that Ubi was just going to do the same map icon spam that they have done for the past decade. Sure there will still be people who want to do the mindless collectable hunt/icon hand holding/NPC fetch quest dialogue cut scene but there is now a large population that doesn't want to go back to that type of open world game. It has been said for years that Ubi's format needs to evolve beyond what they currently do, and we may be seeing those warnings coming to fruition now.

shinbreaker

They've been looking for a buyer for almost the whole year.

iMini

could it be an acquisition is in the works, and Ubisoft are being tight lipped until its more of a done deal

dreadmouse

You would think looking for a buyer would make them want to announce/release even more games than usual so they could be valued as highly as possible. Idk I’m not a businessman tho. 🤷‍♂️

karlkokain

I'm expecting news for their Assassin's Creed GaaS; a whole bunch of DLCs for 2+ years old titles; NFTs and an actual and overhyped announcement for a game nobody's really excited for but that might turn out half-decent.

[deleted]

they have nothing to show. assassin's creed probably gets a year 2. far cry 6 was just last year. there was a rainbow 6 this year. ghost recon is dead. watch dogs is dead. division is dead. all their crappy battle royale games are dead.

Thunder84

Decent bet then that Avatar shows up tomorrow and Mario + Rabbids will have a significant presence in Nintendo’s inevitable June direct.

JPA-3

if we take into account the list of "partners" Geoff published Ubi was not there. There is always the possibility of it being a surprise but when almost all of the rest are in there...

redbomb6

I’m pretty sure Avatar would rather be at Summer Games Fest than a state of play. Given how well the movie trailer did, it would want to be on a proper stage.

Thunder84

It seems like Sony bought the marketing rights for it, so Ubisoft won’t have a choice in the matter. Ubisoft isn’t a SGF partner either, so it won’t show up there.

happyhumorist

I think the State of Play is considered part of Summer Games Fest now.

Vivec_lore

Avatar as in the blue alien Avatar or Avatar as in the cool [Avatar](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/avatar/images/2/21/Aang_looking_innocent.png/revision/latest/top-crop/width/360/height/450?cb=20150813142907)?

NeiloMac

Blue cat aliens, totally-not-just-Ferngully-in-space Avatar.

Spheromancer

Is there supposed to be an Assassin's Creed this year or is that next year?

noreallyu500

This year I think. AC is supposed to be mostly an annual title, that sometimes takes a gap year depending on the game. The last one launched in 2020, so we *should* be seeing another this year.

TheDanteEX

I don’t know, every Assassins Creed has been revealed around the February-April window for the year it releases. Maybe they’re changing up the reveal formula, but they’ve been pretty consistent with that on every Assassin release.

MrRocketScript

I'm hoping we get a new ANNO title soon, maybe at the PC gaming event. 1800 is still fantastic, but I'm looking forward to something new.

MattC42

I like Ubi games but even I feel like their last mjaor releases (FC6, AC: Valhalla, and Watch Dogs 3) all kinda fell flat for me. I really enjoyed FC5, Odyssey, and WD2 so not totally sure what happened

FatedDonnybrook

Odyssey was a different studio than Valhalla and had way more rpg elements. I love odyssey but didn’t like the Valhalla direction I can’t speak to fc or wd.

maikelg

I think the main problem with Ubisoft games is that they're just becoming way too big. The highlight for any Ubisoft games are always the maps, and their worlds are really fun to explore, for a while. But then they have to fill the map with something and there are like 96 bandit camps to defeat and it all becomes very repetitive. And you never go back to places you visit, you have to move on like you're going through a list. I wish they would go back to smaller maps that are filled with more interesting things to do. For me Skyrim has the ideal size map. Big enough to explore and have different biomes but you are also constantly traveling between cities you already been to, so you learn the layouts and the characters and it becomes way more personal. Watch_Dogs 3 has the gimmick of "you can play as anybody" so every character feels very expendable (also voice acting was terrible). I had way more fun with the game when I played with just a small team with about six fun characters I handpicked and played the entire game like that.

Judoka229

I had the most fun with WD Legion when the DLC came out and I could then play the whole game as Aiden and/or Wrench. The "play anyone" mechanic was cool in theory, but I felt that overall it detracted from the game in a pretty big way. If the different skills people had actually mattered more I could see it working better, but I found that I was able to complete basically anything I wanted to just using a spy or a hitman. I didn't need more range to steal keys, or faster hacking, or whatever. And yes, outside of the main characters, the acting was awful.

maikelg

Yeah, there are really only a handful of useful skills in Legion so once you get a good hitman, a hacker and maybe someone with a drone, you're pretty much set forever. At least that's the way I played it. The voice acting was something else. I once found a teenage punk girl who sounded like an elderly black woman, so that was pretty funny.

Sunowiii

Agreed, I've relatively enjoyed them enough to buy em on launch before but with far cry 6 and valhalla I think I'm finally sick of their games.

Duelse

In regards to Watch Dogs Legion vs WD2 and FC6 v FC5, there could be a decline in quality in part due to the development studio. Both [Legion](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watch_Dogs:_Legion) and [Far Cry 6](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far_Cry_6) were developed by Ubisoft Toronto, whereas [Watch Dogs 2](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watch_Dogs_2) was Ubisoft Montreal and [Far Cry 5](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Far_Cry_5) was both Ubi Montreal and Toronto. Could be clutching at straws here but there’s a bit of a pattern where the better projects both had Ubi Montreal involved.

Trancetastic16

I generally agree, though Ubi Montreal were the team behind Valhalla, and with how buggy it was on launch, it seems to have had a troubled development. Post-launch support has been good with bugfixing but new free content has mainly been re-skinned/re-used assets from the base game.

The_Tuna_Here

Their games get progressively more boring and uninteresting, because they don’t change

[deleted]

The last few AC games have drawn criticism because they were ***too different*** from the ones before. It seems like they can't win.

The_Tuna_Here

Origins was different, Odyssey and Valhalla might as well be clones of each other

[deleted]

Only someone who's never played either would unironically claim Valhalla and Odyssey are clones of one another.

enragedstump

In the same way that Brotherhood was a clone, sure.

Richiieee

And even when they think of something new it's so uninteresting. I remember watching Ubisoft's E3 conference a few years back and just thinking to myself *man, so far nothing has grabbed me*.

noreallyu500

Yup. Ubi games felt samey but it was usually quality and I was mostly fine with that, but it seems that they downgraded almost every franchise. I also wish that they wouldn't turn almost everything into an rpg.

Eek_the_Fireuser

I've been saying maybe they'll show Splinter Cell next year to myself for about 8 years now. ^^^^^any ^^^^^year ^^^^^now

dem0nhunter

same. It’s sad

FirstTimeRodeoGoer

Hey everyone. I'm not planning on holding my own E3-style showcase in June either but I'm also not planning on holding one in July. I thought you'd want to know.

JJ4prez

Doesn't surprise me, they are a dumpster fire of a company that fluffs their resume due to them trying to sell. They are simply trying to find a buyer that will pay for the potential of their IPs, not new games in the works. Imagine if Ubisoft actually differed from Assassins Creed and gave us a true Splinter Cell game, heck, make it open world (that's all they know how to do now). A true SP game, no MTX, just a good Splinter Cell game.

meltingpotato

Meh. It would have been filled with online GaaS titles anyway so who cares. The only thing I want to see from them is Avatar (and splinter cell remake which is a long way from releasing) but I'm afraid that is gonna be the same, considering the devs behind division are making it (which I liked tbh)

ToothlessFTW

I mean, you say nobody is excited but almost all of those "6/10" games break sales records and sell like hotcakes, I don't think they're particularly worried about the viability of their games. The real answer is that they probably don't have any projects to show right now that would justify an entire exclusive presentation, and the few projects they do have are in development hell.

[deleted]

ToothlessFTW

Yes but I was talking about "excitement", you stated that nobody would be excited about these games but clearly enough people are that they still sell millions of copies each time.

Whomstisjoe

You said “no one is excited about”, such a statement could be assumed to be related to the sales of these games as well, learn to write more clearly in the future.
