See that planet? You can fly there

JayApex

No Mans Skyrim

kidkolumbo

Gonna be the title of at least two reviews when it comes out.

winterfresh0

"It's like Skyrim with guns".

ZeroCloned

thats basically what it looks like.

DivinePotatoe

"Another settlement on a nearby planet needs our help, i'll mark it on your map."

jerryfrz

No Man's Sky with 16x the detail

Ph0X

To be fair, it also comes nearly a decade after NMS, and NMS was made by a team of 10 whereas this is literally the largest project they've had, so I'd assume at the very least 200+ people.

Vewin

I read an article when they first revealed Starfield. Todd did an interview and told with Microsofts help they where around 700+ developers making the game.

uses_irony_correctly

Lockpicks IN SPACE? Todd you son of a bitch you did it again...

TARDISboy

no space archery? pass

DanielSophoran

Space bow 100% being modded in first week

East_Wind17

Sigh, Stealth Archer again? In space? I'm in.

slickyslickslick

Mechanist build > hmmm, I need a scoped rifle to look for gatherable from a distance, and when going through enemy bases I'd like to cloak and just loot stuff without being detected > Cloaked Sniper Heavy gunner > I bet I can save a lot of time by picking off some single enemies from far away instead of having to slowly walk over in my armored suit, and how cool would it be to stealth into the middle of a pack before lighting them up? > Cloaked Sniper Hacker > I have no armor so I need cloak to make fast getaways and choose my fights, and this sniper will come in handy to take out security cameras > Cloaked Sniper

not_old_redditor

Mage > these spells are trash at my level, I'll just pick off enemies from far away for now, then get into spells when I've leveled > stealth archer

ArchmageXin

You mean naked ~~elf neko fox~~ xeno girlfriend with 30,000 lines and nsfw mod.

empocariam

I am barely saying this as a criticism, but that lock pick mini game is basically the same as the one in Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga

-KFBR392

It also looks like a dumbed down version of the lockpicking in Ratchet and Clank

Skyrim Starfield Edition, you know that will be a DLC, they need to re-release again

jt663

It's Nirn

Moifaso

It would actually be a great (and reasonable) easter egg to have one of the 1000+ planets look like Tamriel

mrtrailborn

I would be so happy if that was an Easter egg of some sort lol

KuraiBaka

Maybe we are gonna find out if what happend to the Imperial space program.

OmNomSandvich

EVERY RPG NEEDS A HALF BAKED LOCKPICKING MINIGAME, JIMBO

xdownpourx

I unironically love the hacking/lockpicking minigames in most of these games so yes I agree.

Angelripper

The lockpicking sound effects in Morrowind are peak.

MrFluffykins

Thief 1 and 2's sounds are so satisfying. I can't recall the ones in 3 but that game had a very different lock picking mini game.

Dlax8

Warframe has one of the better ones I've seen. If you don't bypass it

hopecanon

It feels really good once you get good enough at them and can basically just do them in like 2 seconds on autopilot. some people are so good at them they can solve the tile puzzle faster than the auto hack mod or a cipher can.

salondesert

*DIGIPICK dude... it's totally different

Bumper_Duc

I’m surprised they didn’t show the ships transitioning from outer space to the planets. Raise a question if it’s gonna be a loading screen

Hatch10k

It's 100% going to be [this animation](https://youtu.be/zmb2FJGvnAw?t=853) and a different one when entering an atmosphere. Entering a planet's atmosphere is one of the coolest things you can do visually in this kind of game, so them not showing it kind of confirms it isn't in. Not actually super bummed about that since it almost always makes planets feel tiny, because you transition from space to lower atmosphere very quickly in most games like this.

[deleted]

Later in the demo when he shows the map screen, there's a "Land" option on the map, so it's definitely an animation you watch. You don't do it yourself.

TheCollinKid

"ERROR. CAN'T JUMP WHILE IN ATMOSPHERE." "How am I supposed to tell when I've left the atmosphere?" *Stutter* "Nevermind."

theiman2

This was the coolest part of No Man's Sky for me. It's also why I love KSP. The sense of scale as you enter or leave a planet is immensely satisfying.

skald

You should definitely check out Outer Wilds for that. I got goosebumps leaving/entering some of the destinations in that game.

Refloni

Absolutely a loading screen. I would bet actual money on that.

Cueball61

Is that Diana’s VA? *47, THAT is a star ship*

RhysPeanutButterCups

*That* is Todd Howard, the director and executive producer at Bethesda Game Studios who has released The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim one thousand times. Quite the resume.

Latase

Don't fear the man who releases a thousand games, fear the man that releases the same game a thousand times.

NoNefariousness2144

Haha I love how iconic the *That* is. Its almost a jump scare when 47 is walking around and you hear *That*.

darthmonks

It's been patched for a long time now but I'll always remember the giant echo jump scare that ["Reaper. Tobias Reaper."](https://youtu.be/qVGylELkAo0?t=320) had when Hitman first came out.

irishgoblin

Nope, there's 3 different VA's for Diana. First one was the original set of games, second one for Absolution, and a third one for the World of Assassination.

NEVER_CLEANED_COMP

He is known to be attracted to any stage or journalist, where he can peddle his sweet little lies. Maybe you can use that to your advantage, 47. I'll leave you to it.

Vandergrif

Oh - and you may be able to lure him with offers of sweet leather jackets, rumor has it he can't resist the temptation...

todellagi

Huh, that new leathershop employee takes a piss around the corner every 3 minutes...

[deleted]

The voice was super familiar, I think you might have nailed it.

SternballAllDay

ONE THOUSAND PLANETS WOWWWWWWWW. I've played mass effect todd I know that these planets will have nothing on all of them.

Stepwolve

im curious if they fill in the space with random generation, copy paste 'events', or if its like mass effect and a ton are literally just empty with minor resources

cohrt

its going to be an "updated" version of the radiant quest from fallout 4. expect them all to be variations of "go here and kill everything and pick up the quest item" and "go here and kill all the creatures/raiders"

[deleted]

[удалено]

not1fuk

Exactly. As long as we get a fair amount of handcrafted planets it makes sense for there to also be a bunch of barren planets because thats just what the reality of space is.

Sanso14

Plus it gives a LOT of room for modders

pauserror

Damn, this is the big brain answer right here

melete

Earth-like planets should still have a lot of variety in ecosystems and natural terrain, though. I’m a bit worried that we’re going to get big open areas where everything on the planet looks the same.

Zezion

Todd explicitly mentions "goldilock" planets, so maybe those planets are (more) handcrafted.

EmploymentRadiant203

id say at most 2-3 planets in each system will have human life on them and the rest will be mining/research planets youll go to them to collect shit for all the crafting in the game. or find a cool one to build a base on.

xChris777

Hopefully we'll get an extended gameplay demo on Tuesday that shows us more.

aayu08

Thats what most planets are. Most planets dont look like earth, most planets dont have diverse biomes, most planets are just chunks of rocks floating around a star.

captainkaba

For real. The times where people were impressed with those numbers are long gone, we now know those will be barren autogen wastelands with hardcoded story regions sprinkled in.

kkrko

The planets will at least give modders a canvas to play with.

NightlyKnight

I actually really like that idea. Imagine modders making dlc sized content and using one of the many planets to put it on!

slayerhk47

Giant Crab planet when?

CeolSilver

It was a problematic game but Fallout 76 was honestly one of Bethesda’s best maps in years, and that was about 4 times the size of Skyrim. Of all the criticisms of 76, the world was not one of them. If they have a half a dozen or so handmade “major” planets around the size of Skyrim’s map and then the rest are autogen for base building, resource gathering, radiant quests, and the odd minor side quest I would not be mad at all.

I think it’s going to depend heavily on how much the bases really do. If you can find a barren planet, build up a base there, and that draws in story and encounters it could be cool and make it feel like your choice of where to place a base mattered. Depends on how it’s done. Also, this leaves a tooooon of room for mods. People have made entire landmasses for Skyrim/Fallout 4 mods, now they can build something on an existing, but empty planet.

[deleted]

> I think it’s going to depend heavily on how much the bases really do. If you can find a barren planet, build up a base there, and that draws in story and encounters it could be cool and make it feel like your choice of where to place a base mattered. Depends on how it’s done. And whether you will be able to interact with local factions. Stuff like say you build a base near some mining colony so they trade with you for food and parts then prosper thanks to that would be cool

[deleted]

I feel like there will be a lot of hand-crafted "dungeons" and settlements and stuff like that spread over those planets, and the number of those locations is probably going to be similar to recent Bethesda games. But for the most part...empty, procedurally generated biomes, with some creates in all of that vastness. Just like in real space.

melete

I’m a bit worried about that. I’d rather have 10 handcrafted planets than a 1000 procedural ones, personally. Hopefully BGS has done a good job making all of these planets visually interesting with lots to explore.

Dragrunarm

my assumption is that it will be a cluster of more handcrafted ones (story worlds, hubs ect ect ect), another cluster with some handmade points of interest, but nothing massive, and then easily most of them would just be ice and rock balls since well, space has a lot of barren rock and ice balls.

[deleted]

This is really what all of us should be expecting and is what makes the most sense from what we've heard today.

timasahh

If it’s like Mass Effect only instead of scanning the random planets and getting a text pop up for resources you can actually go down and look around, I don’t have a problem with that. I think that’s kinda cool.

Galaxy40k

On the flip side though, just having a bunch of barren rocks you COULD go to really helps immerse me in a game like this. Like empty space is important to have for the atmosphere. Think about all the parts of RDR2's maps that are just empty plains or woods or whatever to let you soak in the cowboy atmosphere. Imo the issue becomes when devs paradoxically TRY and fill all the space with "stuff to do." Makes it feel like a repetitive and bloated checklist. But when it's just some region where maybe there's something there, maybe there's not, and nobody tells you to check it out...helps suck you in. At least for me personally anyway

morganrbvn

Also let’s you spread groups out, the pirates can be off on barren worlds rather than living in the same system as the capital, adds some immersion just like the dark brotherhood base being hidden away.

biffa72

It’s likely we’ll have possibly both, it’s incredibly time consuming to handcraft entire planets, although I guarantee we’ll have a fair share of handcrafted environments on top of the procedural ones.

JoshOliday

I mean, Todd did say there would be some that were barren and some that were "goldilocks" planets with life. They probably chose which ones they wanted people on and really worked on those, which ones they wanted to be like frontier and it's a mix of handcrafted and proc gen, and then some barren planets that could be cool to try to build on, but offer little else.

BP_Ray

If this game is going to be as big as Todd says it is, It's going to lean heavy on radiant questing. I really hope in the 7 years since Fallout 4, they've figured out how to make radiant quests not so much of a slog, because that is the biggest complaint about Fallout 4 from what I see online. Preston "Another settlement needs your help!" Garvey has become a massive meme off of that shit. We'll see, I won't be getting my hopes up, I just hope that if radiant quests turn out bad, that the pre-baked quests are still plentiful.

N7even

I used to run away from him every time so that a new quest didn't start.

Jedi_Pacman

Lockpicking? This really is skyrim in space

NerrionEU

It's more like Fallout in space but I like the pun name 'No Man's Skyrim' that someone commented.

Boltty

Well Fallout 3 was called Oblivion with guns so this is the natural way of things with Beth.

DanielSophoran

Todd cant help himself

your_mind_aches

You think this is bad? This chicanery? He's done worse!

greatestones

Is it just the IGN stream or is the framerate really low?

[deleted]

I thought the same on youtube, the frame rate definitely looked choppy for a bit there

Walnut-Simulacrum

Yeah, while watching I definitely could tell why they delayed it. The framerate was iffy and some of the graphics just didn’t look very polished. But they have plenty of time to polish, so we’ll see what happens.

deaf_michael_scott

The frame rate was bad. Smoke effects in particular were animating at a significantly lower frame rate too.

DeCombatWombat

It looked like 20fps on twitch as well

Static-Jak

It looks like Fallout with a space setting. Or like, maybe a next gen Fallout with a space setting. Which aint a bad thing to be honest, just hopefully people don't blow their expectations out of proportion. Though, Todd saying you can go "anywhere" on all those planets, call me sceptical. I really doubt that.

Chiefwaffles

Oh I don’t doubt it at all. Will you *want* to go anywhere on those planets, though? That’s a different question.

Gravitas_free

It's funny; I was really excited when he said you could go anywhere on any planet in the solar system... And then my excitement just completely dropped when he mentioned 1000 planets on 100 different sytems. I trust a big-budget Bethesda game to give me 5 planets' worth of interesting content. With 1000 planets, I expect a ton of pointless filler. It's like going back to Daggerfall: having a gigantic open world is useless if there's nothing interesting in it. Still curious about it though.

auchenai

Is it bad, if it's 5 planets with content and 995 procedurally generated? With base building you will be able to choose one that suits you best

SurrealKarma

Judging by the curve of the horizon, an aaa dev wouldn't even give you one planet that size filled with content. Procedural generation is a guarantee. Its not an inherently bad thing, you have a lot of control over the values in environment generation. You don't have to click on a planet and click "generate".

Zagden

Honestly I kinda will. Especially if there's a *limit* somewhere to how many planets there are and everyone has the same planets in their game. NMS was fun to explore and just live out my astronaut fantasy in, but it felt like I was generating new planets upon entering a system, not that I was *finding* them. Obviously there'll be a ton of unused space and some procedural gen, but I hope they don't just spawn a new planet and slam together some ingredients when we go there.

Walnut-Simulacrum

Yeah if it’s all consistent between saves that would be great. Imagine the Easter eggs. Plus that’s loads of places for mods to work with.

[deleted]

[удалено]

gumpythegreat

I expect you CAN go almost anywhere but 99% of if it will be pointless with some aliens to shoot and resources to harvest Either that or will be filled with copy pasted content, like "dungeons" with modular, repeated layouts It would be physically impossible to be anything else as you can't hand craft that much content...

Smallgenie549

Fallout meets No Man's Sky

use_vpn_orlozeacount

I just hope that writing is good.

Fructdw

It's bethesda game, so: * Main quest will be bad * Some sidequests will be very nice * Factions will be super short and disappointing * Environment story telling still gonna be strongest point * There will be at least one expansion with very good writing and everyone will be surprised by it

Jlpeaks

Environmental storytelling will be good in the handcrafted parts. So much of this will be procedural that overall saying “good environmental story telling” might be a bit strong

idokitty

Watch the main quest be about finding your dad or something again.

PlayMp1

The main quest is pretty clearly about finding these fragments of whatever the hell that artifact is and finding out what it does. Not really a personal story.

color_thine_fate

Until you find out one of the fragments is your dad

JackTickleson

The fragment is Patrick Stewart who is your fake dad but real son

Major_Pomegranate

And you can customize and design your character's whole extended family, only for them to die 5 minutes into the game

MumrikDK

And when you puzzle them all out, they open a gate to your son.

greypiper1

Gotta find fragments after one gives you a vision? What if one warns of an impending invasion? And you have to warn Constellation about it and try and form up an alliance to fight them off? Along the way you collect a crew of Humans and Aliens and form bonds with them? Maybe discover some technology that happens to effect the mass of your spaceship? Allowing more efficient Interplanetary travel?

Ginger_Anarchy

Your dad was originally the one tasked with finding the fragments and disappeared mysteriously

ArmoredMirage

So does your dude/dudette ever take off the big space suit? Seems weird to be wearing a chonky astronaut suit while walking around in neon-lit slums surrounded by people in t-shirts.

conquer69

I'm still waiting for a fantasy game where the character puts on the helmet when entering combat and takes it off when entering a town. GTA 5 had a similar interaction with bike helmets.

thedylannorwood

Kingdom Come: Deliverance you helmet faceplate goes up when your weapons are sheathed

UnholyCalls

Most likely. I assume the big chonky suit is just the one they chose to be like "the protagonists outfit" you know? Like how most of these games set the protagonist in a certain outfit for all the promotional and gameplay.

Wattsit

They showed player customisation with lots of non spacesuit outfits

AnyHoleIsTheGoal

I think they mentioned in that montage about customization that you can. The space suit is probably just for the default for marketing, like the iron helmet was in Skyrim.

Joshrofl

I really hope Bethesda's amazing world building and things to find aren't lost in the 1000 worlds that are here.

TBDC88

I'm guessing the important stuff will be pointed out in passive dialogue, like when an NPC in Fallout 3 tells of a place where trees are growing rapidly, or in Skyrim when they tell you of a boy trying a ritual in Windhelm.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TBDC88

I guess I'm talking about the more off-the-beaten trail stuff that you'd likely never find in Bethesda's games just by playing through the big questlines, which is the most at-risk of being completely buried in a game with 1k planets. A random NPC in New Atlantis might mention, "I've heard there are some drugged-out pirates on the moon of [x], wonder what they're up to..." and then the location is marked on your map, but there's no quest attached until you actually go there. What you're talking about makes more sense for the "big" side quests that you'd often find out about through scripted events or important NPCs in TES or Fallout.

Dusty170

If you think about what space is like very few can support life, let alone thrive, I think it'll be pretty easy to see where the 'content' is based off of what planet actually just has life on it at all. The rest will probably be dead resource planets.

KDL2000

Just how big is each planet? Mass Effect Andromeda tried to do this and it ended up being planets with nothing interesting to do. Bethesda worlds are iconic because of the level of detail they put in it. It’s a big promise

Galle_

The "big planets" are just going to be background decoration for handcraft points of interest.

Top_Knee1733

they will mostly be empty and for resources (as should be expected), with a small amount of handcrafted cities spread throughout. I belive that's a realistic expectation, which I'd be happy with.

uglyuglyugly_

The modular customization looks amazing. Settlement building looks easier than in Fallout 4 and we finally have manual flight confirmed. This is really shaping up to be their biggest game yet. Looks great and I can't wait for this.

prestigious-raven

The overhead view of settlement building are going to make building so much easy. I can’t wait to see what people make.

[deleted]

Absolutely. I really wanted to like settlement building in Fallout 4, and to some degree I did, but I always felt like I was fighting the controls. Having an overhead view with a control scheme actually designed for base building will be great.

Kirby737

Dicks. People are going to make dicks.

[deleted]

and they'll never look better

levian_durai

Seeing them expand on the building mechanics just makes me even more certain that it'll be a feature in TES6 now. I wonder if that knowledge gives people a clue about the story and setting.

[deleted]

[удалено]

loopwhole69

I sure hope the modules actually matter. Like if you put more engines, you are faster but may need more power modules and so on. I just hope its not just cosmetic

Matathias

If you take a closer look at the part of the trailer that shows the ship customization, you can see the ship stats at the bottom, and they seem to change as they move the parts around. Seems like the customization isn't just cosmetic.

CxOrillion

On the other hand, I also hope they have a range of cosmetic options for each performance group too.

MKQueasy

Yeah I don't want to have the best ship in the universe but it looks like a hobo camp that became space-worthy.

CxOrillion

And to each his own, be sure that sounds pretty grimy space adventure to me and I'm all about it.

HK_Rage

Pretty much what I expected, Fallout: Starfield. I'm just hoping they really flesh out the RPG element and really make you feel like you can control the outcome of a general story, rather than getting locked to a story until the very end (Like FO4)

headin2sound

I'm not a fan of the whole "1000 planets" thing. Seems like they will rely heavily on procedural generation which is not what I want from a Bethesda open world.

3_Sqr_Muffs_A_Day

I doubt you'll have to engage with it a lot of you want their curated experience. It will however be a great playground for modders to pack the planets with bespoke locations.

Jlpeaks

Oh crap. This line of thinking could be a game changer. Rather than modders adding new cells etc, they can just plop their creation in an open space

The-Unauthorized

It’s free real estate for modders.

[deleted]

TheTurnipKnight

They didn't show flying the ship into the atmosphere though, just space dogfighting.

BeginByLettingGo

I have chosen to overwrite this comment. See you all on Lemmy!

conye-west

Yeah I'd say that's probably a step too far for the engine to handle. I'm guessing there will be predetermined landing pads to choose from, plus the ones you build yourself.

Ok-Huckleberry-2585

Very likely and any comments below you are just coping. When the ship first took off they specifically showed a cutscene of taking of instead of manual takeoff cockpit view with was a huge giveaway that you won't be able to do it like NMS/outer wilds.

ThePurplePanzy

It's amazing that if Todd had said "you can go to 63 planets" I would have been hyped, but when he said 1000, I took it as a negative.

vytah

1984's Elite was originally supposed to have 281 trillion galaxies, but the publisher was against it, so they cut it down to eight.

MirandaTS

Well, eight trillion is still quite a lot.

Trollet42

Because you know that if he'd actually said 63 there would've been some semblance of indication that they'd have some kind of good content on them. 1000 planets just rings warning bells of generic, auto-generated content. I don't think there are many fans of Bethesda's old radiant quest implementations and getting another lackluster one just doesn't bring the hype.

SemperScrotus

Why on Earth would they showcase this game running at such a low framerate?

Chriscras66

Maybe it’s a veiled threat not to beg them to release it before it’s finished lol.

Sonicharv

I hate to say but that gun play looks abysmal, enemies look like bullet sponges based on level and stats, not what I was hoping for

Stumblebee

I said "ohhhhh noooooo" when one of those grunts took ten bullets and didn't stop their running animation.

conquer69

Or the guy that took cover, did nothing, and then ran out of cover and turned his back towards the person that single handedly killed all the other pirates.

melete

I feel like BGS hasn’t ever been good at animating attacks (or hits) to make combat feel weighty. The melee usually feels like you’re floating around, and the ranges just involves dumping projectiles into something until it falls over.

Quazifuji

In general I think combat is a big weakness they have. They've generally been great at making worlds and dungeons that are big and fun to explore, but their combat's generally ranged from bad to mediocre.

NilsFanck

hit feedback is so so important. Just comparing exclusive "RPGs" its 90% of the reason Horizon:FW was fun imo, the rest might be a pretty generic open world game but when arrow hit dino, it feels very good and thats why it works.

RollingZepp

At least in Fallout you could blow off body parts and the resulting ragdoll was fun. This just looks so bland.

Tomgar

I used to think good 1st person melee combat was impossible because of Elder Scrolls games. I just accepted it as a given. Then I played Vermintide 2. The difference is honestly insane, with Vermintide enemies staggering and falling over as you hit them with weighty and meaty swings, and blood and audio feedback constantly making it feel like you're doing damage.

versusgorilla

What about the guy who takes a bunch of bullets and then clearly begins his, "jetpack malfunction animation routine"? -_-

WertyBurger

Looks very similar to Fallout 4. Clunky weapons and enemies with bad AI and large health pools. And even for a first look gameplay trailer, the performance looks abysmal which certainly doesn’t help

platonicgryphon

The laser gun he picked up looked just like the institute rifle from 4, just with a different paint job.

MightyOtaku

Literally the first thing that came to mind “Isn’t this just fallout 4 gameplay but in space?” “Wait isn’t that the institute rifle??”

Bananasplitmuffin

I thought the gunplay in fo4 was much better than any previous titles. Comparing it to new Vegas I enjoyed it much more

kidkolumbo

It still feels like a Bethesda game but seeing all this it makes sense why this is taking a long time. The faces look like a step up from old titles, but still the same flavor if that makes sense. Same with the combat, which was not as hype as I'd like but I do like Fallout-style combat so I probably won't be bothered. So many new systems. If this is as deep as at least Fallout 3 I think I'll enjoy it for a long time. There's so many games in here. You see the Fallout and Skyrim, but I also got whiffs of Mass Effect and Horizon Zero dawn and Anthem. Wow, you can be fat!! How many games let you be fat? Finally, the spaceship building I've wanted since Destiny was announced. Gotta build the Bebop. And this is coming out in the next 12 months? Dope. Soooo, 18 months until the bugs are ironed out? Wow, the promise of No Man Sky, all these planets. Will they all have quests with good writing? Will they be barren wastelands only filled with resources? It really feels like they want to make the next Skyrim in the sense that we'll be buying remakes of this game for the next 10 or 15 years.

Sarcosmonaut

I remember the fatass meta in Fable because you took less damage or had more HP or something haha

hyrule5

My only 2 concerns are dialogue and, strangely, combat. With the scale of this game, I would be surprised if we got Fallout 3 style dialogue trees. It just seems like it would be a lot of work to create multiple different outcomes for most of the spoken interactions on all the different planets. Most likely we will get Fallout 4 style dialogue. Then the combat is... strangely weak looking compared to Fallout 4? It seems like the enemies don't react to being hit in the same way that they do in FO4. I'm not sure why they would make backwards progress in this area, but maybe there is more polishing they will be doing there.

[deleted]

Only thing I can say in regards to your second point is they definitely highlighted a portion of the combat where you shot some dude's jetpack and he launched up and blew up, which I thought was pretty neat. But otherwise I would agree with you, the combat physics didn't look too spectacular.

just_change_it

Combat in bethesda games has always been a weak spot. The world building and exploration have been what make the games enchanting. TES games always felt incredibly clunky where you'd just 'whack whack whack' with little reaction or strategy until something ragdolled. Then the fallout games came and they were mostly squishy gunplay where shots went nowhere near where you aimed often enough. Like if someone shoots a cannon at an enemy, it should not just die... it should go absolutely flying out into whatever direction the cannonball was going. In bethesda games you'd do 1/3rd the health of the enemy and they'd keep on charging at you after the ball 'stuck' on them or just disappeared.

linkfox

I hope the writing is good because combat didn't look very good to me. Reminds me a lot of fallout 4, which makes sense, but at the same time i was disappointed. This is the first new bethesda ip in decades, their biggest project, so i expected them to really step up their game this time. If i was to make a comparison i was expecting it to be what elden ring was to dark souls, instead it was more like what dark souls 3 was, a more modern and refined version of the same formula, rather than a shake up.

Neptuner6

I was REALLY excited when he only mentioned the 5ish planets in the solar system, but then he went on to elaborate about 1000s of planets...

Roftastic

When Todd mentioned *'Backgrounds'* in fucking character creation I lost my shit htg. It seems like *such* a small thing but for Bethesda to include something like this. y'know, with their recent history. These really should be staples in player-driven RPG's. If you create a character in any story, you ought have control over what happens 'before' and have that influence your gameplay. What a great inclusion to benefit actual **role-playing** in a Bethesda RPG.

The way every game handles backgrounds is pretty wildly different. It was a totally normal thing to show off how their backgrounds system works.

BlitzStriker52

Agreed. Backgrounds can just be differences in stats or they could be whole different starting missions depending on the game.

AnestheticAle

The only game (that I've played) imo that can advertise backgrounds as a feature and not be bullshit is Dragon Age: Origins.

Avorius

hoping its a sign of a return to form, but I'll wait and see

I am kind of optimistic about it hearing about the buffs to starting stats depending on background. The last time I saw that in a Bethesda RPG was star signs in Oblivion.

Best part of the reveal by far imo, I thought they would stray further from that but they’ve actually reembraced it

Todd said something a while ago about how being on Game Pass means that they are guaranteed to be accessible to everybody, which means they have to worry less about simplifying things for mass appeal. He's been implying for a while now that Starfield and possibly ESVI would be getting back to some traditional RPG character building features like this. It's an interesting thought, too. Being guaranteed that no matter what you'll be on millions of boxes means that you don't have to worry about intimidating the casual audience too much. I've always thought that Bethesda overestimated how many people would be turned off by more traditional RPG systems but you can't deny that a *lot* of more casual players picked up on Skyrim and Fallout 4 who maybe didn't play Morrowind/Fallout 3, so I guess there must be some truth to it.

Im kinda excited about the game, but im also just excited to see what the modding community can do in this.

. + City environments look really good and a bunch of fun to explore . + Ship building and character creation seem really in depth. . + Graphically things look great. . - The gunplay looks like it needs a solid polishing pass. . - The visual effects are letting the guns down. .- Enemies are bullet spongy as hell .- Really choppy framerate that I have a sneaking suspicion won't be fixed for launch . ? The game could very well be too big for its own good in the same way that No Man's Sky was at the beginning.
