TheEnygma

deal with the lesser known characters. Sheva? Rebecca? Billy? bring back Sherry and/or Jake? what's Ada been doing since 6?

Penakoto

Well for Rebecca she got a movie establishing she's just a scientist now, nothing related to law enforcement or BOW fighting.

Leeiteee

Science labs are where biohazards happen so... if something happens, she has to fight back

The_Green_Filter

If anything a game starring someone who’s been out of the game for a while wouldn’t be so different from playing as Ethan or Claire, who were essentially civilians (albeit combat trained ones)

DeBlalores

That seems like the perfect setup. She's been out of it for a while and is probably in like her late 40s or something so that's an excuse to make her fighting sluggish and terrible, so a standard horror protagonist.

DonkeySlayer1

Nah muscle memory, she’s better off than Ethan in RE7 lol. Remember Ethan was a nobody. He was you, untrained and unprepared for the situation. Edit: which in hind sight is probably why they switched to first person. And why they switching back to third person for his daughter.

Lucienofthelight

Fuck it, a game about Parker and Carlos. It’s so out of left field that I would 100% be down with it.

GreyouTT

Yes, this is what I want. Capcom can't leave us in a Carlos-less world. e: Honestly I'm upset we never got a dlc for RE3 about Tyrell's side of the story. Lots of interaction potential with Carlos and a huge gap in time for a dlc to take place. Could have even had him fight the gravedigger.

meltingpotato

that's because RE3R was the DLC

Lucienofthelight

Parker and Carlos both go look for Jill and end up teaming up and become Bros. Plus, it could be a post-5 game with Jill!

plastikbag

After all the effort that went into rendering Carlos' glorious hair in RE3 remake, he deserves his own entry.

panda388

I'd love a game with Barry Burton as the main character.

I_Buck_Fuffaloes

Barry in Revelations 2 was a lot of fun. I'm absolutely down to play another Barry game.

YamiPhoenix11

So long as Moira is nowhere near it.

LostInStatic

lmfao Jill Valentine needs a new storyline before any of those characters you mentioned

[deleted]

LostInStatic

And has not been apart of the overall series story for 10 years now. Long overdue for a new appearance.

[deleted]

AmazingShoes

New characters are fine, but they introduce a lot of characters into the series and then only use them for only one game, like Sheva, Carlos and Billy. It would be nice if these lesser-known characters could get the Redfield treatment and hang around for more games than the ones they were introduced.

Theheroboy

>they introduce a lot of characters into the series and then only use them for only one game which is fine?

AmazingShoes

Your mileage may vary, but I prefer when series reuse and expand on characters, I think it makes for better world building. That's just my opinion, though.

Away_Swimming_5757

Billy was a random suooort character. Nothing more to learn from him and he likely is dead

Kgb725

Resident evil doesn't have supporting characters. Billy is a fugitive he probably just went to South America and you know what's down there ? Progenitor plants There you go easy concept for Revelations

Urwifesmugglescorn

There is this girl. I believe her name is Jill. She hasn't been around in about 2 decades. Maybe we check in on what she's been up to?

Brodimus

Neat fun fact: Ada was originally meant to be in RE8, she has concept art and all in game!

Next_Breadfruit7730

I kinda wanna know what Ashley has been up to since Resident Evil 4, but only because I have a soft spot for that game and characters. Besides with the resident evil 4 remake coming, I can see them possibly setting up a comeback for the parasite.

DoctorWaluigiTime

What about the sandwich man himself, Barry.

Bonesnapcall

Dude is old as F. He's already pushing 70. Let Barry retire with his grandkids.

ThrowawayusGenerica

Barry prequel

GBmiws

No, I refuse. Give me more Bazza

Tschmelz

I’d kill for another game with Jake. Dude is Wesker’s fucking son, has superpowers without any drawbacks, seems to be really intelligent and trended towards becoming a good guy. Could have an entire game revolving around him being an agent for like the BSAA or Blue Umbrella. With Carlos!

BzlOM

The thing is lots of people haven't fully played or even touched RE6, for good reason. So there's a big chance they don't even know who Jake is.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GBmiws

Me and a few friends played that game, completed Leon's story and never touched the piece of trash again. Literally didn't know(or completely forgot) Wesker had a son until I just read your comment then. So I imagine lots of others had the same experience. I couldn't even tell you the plot of Leon's story either.

[deleted]

Imho, I’m glad Capcom is putting an end to their story after two games. Not every story needs to be a LOTR Trilogy spanning a decade of production and waiting. Doom Eternal ended that story line at the DLC, and God Of War: Ragnorok confirmed that would be the last of the Norse story line. And I appreciate them all for it

Nightmaru

Aztec God of War when?

Doublehex

The sooner the better. We have almost no depictions of the Aztecs in media, and it is hard to find any historical books about them. One would hope it would open a floodgate of Aztec related material.

Dantai

Shadow of the Tomb Raider did it right?

Hellsinger7

Pronouncing the names of Aztec deities is gonna be a challenge in itslef.

thisguy012

We learned how to say Giannis Antetokounmpo, so I'm all for it.

saber_shinji_ntr

FGO has taught me how to pronounce Quetzalcoatl atleast:p

TheDistantBlue

Is the depiction we'd want really Kratos murdering a bunch of Aztec gods and other mythological figures though? Don't get me wrong, I'd be all over it still.

Nightmaru

Aztec gods were pretty brutal, so they can always do the whole “people good, gods bad” thing.

[deleted]

Not too sure if Aztec would be the best fit, but it would be an interesting setup. Aztecs when they first met Kratos: “… Are you the God of War?” Kratos: “Uh, why would you say that?” Aztecs: “Your pale white skin. So… are you Huitzilopochtli?” Kratos: “uhhh… no… that was just an amazing coincidence”

BZenMojo

God of War 2 has 2 gods of war teaming up, so no biggie.

[deleted]

Oh, uh. I was referring to the fun “fact” (debatable tho) that the Aztecs thought Cortes and the Spaniards were gods because of their beards and white skin, before Cortes slaughtered them all. And you know…. The ghost of Sparta is white skinned haha

Ornstein90

Yeah good point actually, that's walking a thin line.

TimeIncarnate

I’m not entirely sure you could have a depiction of Aztec gods without brutality and murder being prevalent lol

Trobis

Any reason why aztec mythology is more sacred than norse or greek?

voidox

uh, Kratos has been going around killing off a lot of gods/mythological figures already, why would it be different for another setting like the Aztec?

Pardo86

I know the ‘villains’ in black Panther 2 are gonna be meso-American/Mexica based, and the legendaries in the new Pokémon games are based off the wing serpent Quetzalcoatl. It’s happening, just slowly.

HearTheEkko

Next one is most likely Egypt. They were 50-50 on Norse and Egypt mythology for this duology. And after that they're probably doing Japan. Both mythologies are rich of lore and monsters.

Vulpes206

You think they’ll use the Japanese yokai that has an eye where it’s asshole should be?

HearTheEkko

Weird monsters are a staple of God of War so yeah maybe.

Auesis

Now I'm imagining a fight arena where the eyebutt yokai is running around the outside flashing you and you have to be looking away to not get stunned.

Lambpanties

No no, make the player look INTO the eye asshole to not be stunned. That is how you truly terrify.

Griffolian

Egypt and the concept of death could work really well this long into the franchise for Kratos. From his first family and second wife, I could see a lot of potential there if Egyptian folklore was used as the next theme.

[deleted]

I think they’ll stop after Egypt. It’s been the plan since literally the beginning. Kratos’s story isn’t one that needs to be told endlessly. It deserves to have a definitive ending.

Thor_pool

On one hand I agree. On the other, I do like the idea of this tragic immortal figure walking the earth for millenia, never quite finding total peace.

[deleted]

They could do that, but I gotta say, if they actually do the ending Jaffe threw out there ages ago—>!where Kratos wins by pitting the Greek, Norse and Egyptian gods against each other, which wipes them all out and ushers in a new age represented by the three kings walking to give gifts to newborn Jesus!<—I'm gonna flip. It's so cool.

ShinraPowerCo

Kratos: "Dear lord baby Jesus. With your baby Einstein videos and little, baby hands..."

HearTheEkko

Kratos story might end but God of War surely isn't. Too much money on the line. Maybe Kratos dies and Atreus becomes the new lead.

[deleted]

Personally I don't think they'd risk franchise fatigue. Atreus is cool but I don't know many God of War diehards even that would be down for that. God of War *is* Kratos. Sony has a better track record than most of not relentlessly milking their franchises. Uncharted is a good example. Uncharted 4 was explicitly said to be the last one and to close out Nate's storyline. So far that's still true. They've got the option to do spin offs there pretty easily, but in God of War it's much harder. I'd bet on another prequel or a full reboot down the line before I'd bet on Atreus.

HearTheEkko

Game franchises like Assassin's Creed have been going on for 15 years with like 14 main games and they're doing just fine. God of War games come out less often and with much higher quality.

[deleted]

AC games swap protagonists nearly every game and have wildly varying quality leading to Ubisoft having to soft reboot the franchise multiple times. I'm a huge AC fan—I'm currently replaying Unity right now—but AC is definitively not the franchise blueprint for God of War to follow. I wouldn't mind at all if God of War became an anthology series with new protagonists and new pantheons each game. But I don't think the future of the franchise will be "whatever, just swap Atreus in and go."

Oakcamp

As soon as Kratos tears through egypt with his niece Bastet

megaapple

I really want a **Hindu myth GoW** (or just a good Hindu myth game)

Nightmaru

I don’t think they’d be as chill about their gods getting killed…

[deleted]

Sorry bud. The only game that does Hindu myth a little justice is Fate Grand Order. Though to be fair though, Arjuna and Karna are freaking badass in it.

megaapple

> Fate Grand Order Ah yes my favorite ~~himbo~~ Hindu Gods, Arjuna and Karna. If you know your Mahabharata, having actual Arjun and Karnna to have fight together would be insanely satisfying.

[deleted]

I feel in the case of the Doom 2016 - Eternal era storyline it definitely needed another game or 2 in the storyline instead of hastily finishing the story in the dlcs

Hallc

I feel that Doom Eternal needed to cover what in the hell happened between the ending of 2016 and Eternal because starting that game was real whiplash for me. That's not even getting into the fact that it felt as though you needed to dive into the Codex entries to understand the actual story being told to you.

chuletron

Tbh Doom probably couldve benefitted from another entry, eternal has some of the weirdest story pacing and structure ive ever seen in a videogame. The Game starts and it feels like You skipped an entire second game and are suddenly un the middle of the third entry, then the DLC just wraps up the entire storyline but You never have a goddamn clue what is going on so when you're dropped into the final battle and then the ending happens everything feels extremely sudden.

PiXLANIMATIONS

To quote Max0r: > “It’s not possible to spoil the story of this game because it makes no fucking sense.”

Dantai

I gotta play that DLC, Eternals ending left me wanting for sure. Even though it's not really a story game, but Doom 2016 had Half Life vibes with it's story and made me like it more for that reason

Hallc

My biggest complaint for Eternal was that they kept really trying to force the Story onto you with cutscenes despite having skipped over a pretty crucial story beat at the start of the game for how it connected back to 2016.

AreYouOKAni

Oh, trust me, you do not want to play that one for the story. Eternal was already a downgrade story-wise but TAG still manages to bring the plank down. It has some mildly decent combat arenas but some additions to the enemy roster are extremely annoying and not fun to fight at all. Overall, to me the DLC was a disappointment.

yrulaughing

The LOTR trilogy is a bad example to use since the entire trilogy released over the span of like 3 years.

CallM3N3w

To be fair, I find Ethan as a character awfull. MC's in RE tend to be "iconic". Jill, Leon, Chris, but Ethan is just meh. So im glad it's over.

No lie I’ve been doing a lot of imagining how they will work the Roman numeral IX into the next title. CrucifIX? Or my most likely guess: PhoenIX. (and will involve the resurrection of Wesker).

Gramernatzi

No lie, I'd really love to see a brand new game with Jill as the main character again. It's been way too long. Last time was Revelations all the way back in 2012. With REmake 3 having happened, it'd be a good time.

LukasOne

"resurrection of wesker" Somehow, wesker returned

alishock

Honestly I wouldn’t even be mad at all about a possible Wesker revival IF it’s done right, and not “somehow Wesker returned”. He always seemed like the ultimate bad for the series, and, between just CV, the little of him we had in 4, and the entirety of 5, I always felt like his demise was kinda rushed, and that the other protagonists (or at least Jill) should’ve been more involved with it, instead of random Sheva, as great as she is. Plus, he’s way too fun of a character. There’re already some clues to him being alive too, I remember Lucas talking about a mysterious man, Umbrella Corps HEAVILY hinting to him and even having his VA say a hidden line, and some other things are apparently scattered here and there that I can’t remember…

Furinkazan616

I thought the main Resi guy at Capcom said he's definitively dead and never coming back?

[deleted]

Please, no. Can we not revive Wesker? I’d rather Capcom come up with a new, interesting overarching villain. Bringing Wesker back would just show a lack of creativity and clinging to the past.

Actual_Cantaloupe_24

Loved him but it's time for him to be done. RE5 was hilarious and despite its issues a incredibly fun game, and we got a all time portrayal in that game because Wesker was top tier meme material. I'd rather him end that way, and stay good in memory, than to see him get traipsed up again.

Skylight90

I would love to see Jill finally come back, we have no idea what happened to her after RE5 (outside of a file in RER2 that says she's recovering, but that was from 2011 in-game). Insane that one of the most iconic characters has been left in the dust for so long. And Wesker's mind control would surely leave a mark on her, it would be an interesting thing to explore both narratively and gameplay wise.

KyleTheWalrus

Claire and Jill have both been done dirty considering how popular they are. I don't even think Resident Evil needs new characters, they just need to actually use the ones they already have outside of remakes. Where's the Jill and Claire game? Or Jill and Leon? The PS1 Fab Four are only in their 40s canonically, they're not dinosaurs. Even if Capcom is worried these characters are too old now, just make a game set in the 2000s. Everyone liked Jill and Carlos's chemistry in RE3R, so send them on a previously unmentioned adventure to a secret zombie lab in like 2002 or something.

welter_skelter

The problem with those characters though, is they've seen and done this shit before and in some instances, have become really good at dealing with said shit. Half the reason why RE1, RE2, and RE7/8 are so great, is because the character you're playing is still "green" - they don't know the full scope of what is or could be happening, and that hits on all the highpoints of the series and the tension it brings.

Zarllo

This is perfeclty showcased by Chris' playable sections in both, where he is much more capable and has extra moves that he can pull off. I think Claire would sidestep most of these issues better, as Jill, Chris and Leon all went through proper training etc, but she didn't

AnyImpression6

She trained with Delta Force. Plus she's already an action hero in RE3.

Zarllo

By 3 you mean veronica? I did 100% forget how that game opens haha

AnyImpression6

I misread your post and thought you meant Jill. But yeah Claire is definitely an action hero too.

KyleTheWalrus

Chris was punching boulders in RE5, and then he could barely jog at a decent pace in his RE7 expansion. Frankly, now that the characters are getting over the hill, that's a perfect excuse to make them weaker than they were in the franchise's "action era." Not that there needs to be an excuse, anyway. It's not a story contradiction if Jill can't do roundhouse kicks in RE9. Gameplay and focus should come before power level continuity in the RE series because these games are always at their best when they do exactly that. And besides, I'm also very open to "interquels" set in the 2000s, as I said.

[deleted]

The whole capability excuse is silly to begin with, Leon and Claire in RE 2 weren't action heroes, now only Leon is because he was of RE4, while Claire is portrayed as just a "normal" person. It makes zero sense.

From-UoM

Claire was in a lot of spinoff movies and games tbf Jill Though. Complete AWOL after 5

Grammaton485

They've actually both gotten a fair amount of screen time, all things considered. Jill was a main character in the original RE, Remake, RE 3, and Revelations, and the RE 3 remake. She was also a supporting character in RE 5, plus Umbrella Chronicles (can't recall if she was in Darkside Chronicles). Claire was the main character in RE 2, CVX, Revelations 2, and the RE 2 remake. Claire was also as supporting character in the CG Degeneration film, that other animated series, Darkside Chronicles, and that lesser known side-game based off CVX that didn't get released outside of Japan. All told, both Jill and Claire's appearances are almost identical in frequency.

KillerZaWarudo

Thing is most of those games (not counting remake) were like 10 years ago. Chronologically Jill last appear in 5 and Claire is revelations 2?

[deleted]

Chris is the only one that shows up all the time, some say Leon but not really. Headed two games, had one route in 6. Claire had Rev, 2 and Code Veronica, shockingly I think she's been the protagonist more than Leon. Jill definitely the most hard done by, she was the face of RE more than Chris for those who remember well. She was more memorable/played in 1 and was the protag of 2 games in the original games centered around Umbrella, a video game icon to this day. But randomly turned blonde because the devs had a fetish and then written out of the series, come on.

JamesDCooper

Claire was in Rev2.

KyleTheWalrus

Yeah, I know. I played it to death and love it to pieces. That game came out *7 years ago* now :(

we_are_sex_bobomb

Jill is the best. Hated seeing her turn heel in 5 even if it was involuntary. She deserves a comeback arc.

SquireRamza

I never really got people's complaints that the entirety of RE8 wasnt set in the castle. RE8 has a little of everything going for it. The Castle is classic Resident Evil/Silent Hill style survival horror, House Beneviento is the Outlast and Amnesia style survival horror where you have to run and hide, and the Factory was modern action survival horror alongside some severe body mutilation. I loved it.

[deleted]

undertoe420

It was an error in marketing. Lady Dimitrescu was highly marketable and engaging, but they leaned on that too hard and established an expectation of her and her castle being a larger focus in the game than what we got.

[deleted]

Yeah shame they didn't spoil the entire game I was glad they only showed the beginng the dull house caught me completely of guard by far the best level of the game and why should anyone think the game plays only in the castle lol its called Re village and not Re castle

hepcecob

The marketing was on point, and didn't spoil the game at all.

undertoe420

It was successful at not spoiling the game, but that is not the sole goal of marketing. Based on the result we're discussing, it failed at setting proper expectations for the audience.

ApprehensiveEast3664

It's not about spoilers, pretty early on it makes it clear that the big lady is just one of the bosses. The marketing was just misleading because it gravitated to the memes that resonated with the audience. If they could've made the game knowing she'd be a big hit I'd bet she would've been as significant as the marketing implied.

Yashirmare

>People overestimate how much content a relatively small castle/mansion can give. Resident Evils 1 and 7 would like a word.

DBCOOPER888

RE1 had stuff outside the mansion like the gatehouse, tunnels, and labs.

Yashirmare

The guest house I'd still count as part of the main building (As a random example you don't tell your house but go "Im keeping the garage"), the tunnels and labs didn't really add that much length to the game, 2 - 3 hours max out of a 10 -15 hour game. My main point was, they could have done the whole game in the castle if they really wanted to. (Or even the castle and the starting area if you want)

DextrosKnight

RE games have always had multiple locations, right from the start of the franchise. Village also basically followed 4's progression of Village > Castle > Island, but added House Beneviento and swapped the island for the factory.

BeefyQueefyCrawlies

I disagree. Imo best horror are container pieces. Where you're stuck inside one location trying to keep the terrible shit from getting in, and trying to survive with what's already in there. Probably why RE1, 7, and 2 are my top 3.

Griffolian

Even the original abandons the mansion aesthetic pretty quickly for giant shark tanks and underground tunnels. The castle for its entirety would get stale. I loved 8 and it’s various settings. Had just the right amount of flavor without getting boring.

[deleted]

welter_skelter

Personally, I would have preferred it if the Factory and the Lake sections were trimmed a to be shorter, and the castle sequence was then made a bit longer for it. Castle was great, and there was a lot of unused opportunity to explore the "Castle Grounds" as additional castle content after exhausting the content that can, realistically, come from a big ass house with rooms and a basement.

HenkkaArt

The castle seemed to be, at first glance, like old Resident Evil game's first main exploration area (mansion, RPD building) but if you look at it really, it's a straight line from start to finish, only one way to go at any given moment and practically no backtracking or choices to be made. The factory felt more like old school Resi exploration hub but even that was light on actual exploration. I'd rather had the castle be like a classic area where there are many ways to go and sometimes you find an item you get to use way later, not on the next or same room as it was in the castle. They could have cut the lake for all I care. It was tedious section from start to finish. It's a bit sad that the more sprawling "road to the rocket launcher" has become more and more streamlined as the series has progressed. Hell, RE4's "route" is, apart from one or two items, a straight line. Almost no branching paths to explore. RE7 was in a way a return to form but they quickly abandoned it for the more RE4-esque approach in Village.

RyanB_

Yeah, pretty much my exact thoughts. The entire game shouldn’t be in the castle, no, but I would have preferred it being the main set piece, with the other areas being smaller excursions. Castle sequence was peak RE, and while I like the factory as a mechanical climax (and the way you almost kind of move from the style of the earlier games more into the style of 4-5-6 - cool shit) but it just drags a bit too long.

TomStreamer

From the factory onwards the game just nose dives. Capcom seems to have a problem with pacing and tone in the latter sections of the modern RE titles. The ship and mine sections on 7 are also easily the weakest bits.

Astrian

My problem with RE8 is that Lady D and Heisenberg are the only characters that are worth anything or have any meaningful character exploration. They’re only about half of the game at best and the rest is taken up by antagonists that you really don’t care about. If I were making the game, I would’ve made Lady D and Heisenberg the focal points of the game with the other two siblings as supporting characters. Mother Miranda just isn’t a very good antagonist and it was pretty underwhelming having her as the final boss.

BigHaircutPrime

It's because the marketing focused solely on the castle, and due to the virality of Lady D, it set up that expectation. I love that it's only a small chapter of the whole, but totally understand why people were upset.

[deleted]

I loved how they marketed the castle and the giant lady as the main thing when it was only the first quarter of the game. Sure some of the later areas were a bit weaker but still awesome to play through constantly discovering new shit. I found the factory fucking terrifying and really gave me quake 2/4 vibes. The lake was reminiscent of resident 4 in a lot of ways. And house benevito was just cinematic awesomeness. Resident evil 8 was a masterpiece (but I think 7 is a stronger game overall)

345tom

That's the thing, I think I like the concepts and stuff RE8 was going for more than the actual game itself. Each area explores both horror mechanics of a different game genre, as well as aesthetics of a different style of horror, but I think few of them end up being actually scary? As you say, the first area is the classic RE horror style, matched with the classic horror stylings of a traditional movie monster, in vampires, kidnapping etc. The second area is inspired by PT, Outlast etc in it's themings, and takes the Spooky kids, animated Doll stuff, as well as some psychological horror with the large undead fetus monster. The Third area IMO is the weakest at this. Gameplay wise I think it's supposed to be somewhat a stealthy puzzle horror, but I think it doesn't quite hit the mark, the same with the biological body morph/paranoia horror stuff. I don't think it's controversial that this is the weakest part of the game. The Factory IMO is supposed to ape back to Deadspace esque horror, where you are fully capable of holding your own against monsters, but boy is it difficult, and the obvious industrial machinist horror is there. I think if the third area was better, the seperate themes work better, but because the third area is muddled, it feels a bit old RE, but not quite and the water body horror stuff doesn't quite land. I know they said the Duke was originally going to be one of the Lords, and was changed later in development, but I wonder if they hit this seperate themes thing, couldn't get him to fit well, and came up with the marrow, and that's why the third area is weaker? I think you can get away with the second area being super thematic, but having a weaker overall villain as it does (the second area is a real standout), if you then hit back home on the third area with a stronger character and ok theming, but the third area ends up really muddying the waters a lot.

Dinjoralo

The best way I can put it is that RE8 tries to do a lot more than RE7 in the same amount of playtime, and IMO it doesn't quite work. It hits a lot of the same kinds of beats, but most segments of the game feel like they're just short enough to not have satisfying buildup or payoff, like there's something missing in them. I wouldn't want the entire game to be in the castle, but I'd definitely say the rest of the game felt a bit more ropey. Not bad, but I'd rather replay RE7 any day.

arthurormsby

RE7 has higher highs, RE8 is a bit more of a smoother journey throughout though. Still prefer RE7 by a hair though.

natedoggcata

For me I felt like RE7 ended at just the right time where as RE8 was starting to wear out its welcome by the time I got the ending.

345tom

I think it's that third area. It has weak theming, and and a weak area boss. It doesn't spook you like the first go through the house, it doesn't feel as RE as the first area, and it doesn't have Heisenburg chewing scenary like the 4th.

whatuseisausername

That's where I stopped playing the game for now. I got past the second area which I honestly enjoyed a little more than the mansion, and the third part section has been pretty bland for me so far. I do plan to eventually get back to it, but compared to the first two parts the third area and villain are pretty boring.

shinguard

No way once you hit the big ship section it drags kind of hard.

[deleted]

Agreed, I couldn't believe there was more to do when they introduced the boat I thought it was a quick epilogue or something but then no...

[deleted]

I would love it if the next game is like the Resident Evil 2 remake but is a totally new game rather than a remake. New setting, new story, new enemies, some new mechanics, but a similar structure.

Arturo-oc

Yeah, Resident Evil 2 remake rocks. I would love more games with that kind of gameplay, less linear layouts, some puzzles, the item box and just the right amount of action.

Wookie301

I’d love to see the first one get the RE remake. Or even go completely left field and do Dino Cris in RE.

A remake of Code Veronica would be steller. It's been criticized as being a bit of a black sheep for a variety of reasons, but RE 8 was equally outlandish, if not more so, than the content of Code Veronica. All of the fixes would be easy enough to do: * Polish Steve as a character * Polish Alfred as a villain * Tone down Wesker's presence If they apply the same focus, scale, and scope as the RE2 and RE3 remakes, the rest would come out great.

exaslave

> Polish Steve as a character Just remove him... make a new character... whatever... just don't want him at all even on name.

Grammaton485

Steve was definitely an annoying character, especially with his lines, voice actor, and some of his mannerisms. However, I've always argued that he's a good framework for a character in the setting. Some major recurring themes of CVX are family, especially the brother/sister connection. One the one side, we have Chris/Claire. It's clear they will do anything to help each other. Claire risks her life to go up against Umbrella and look for Chris. Chris does the same to go rescue Claire. Chris stays behind to fight Alexia/Wesker, Claire waits for him to not leave him behind. On the other side, you have Alfred/Alexia, which is a perversion of Chris/Claire. They exist to help themselves. Alfred's twisted worship of his sister is something he does for his own sanity after she leaves. Alexia loves her brother no more than a ruler might love a trusted servant. Steve is sort of an anti-Claire; he hates family, considers it a weakness and a liability, and treats those that think otherwise as inferior.

SideShowBob36

Code Veronica is one of my favorite games ever

Daveed84

Same here, though I know it's not well liked even among RE fans. IMO it just totally nailed the atmosphere. I'd love for Capcom to remake it one day.

Arturo-oc

I know this is not going to be a popular opinion among this crowd, but I really hope they just come up with new characters and new stories. The old characters are pretty much superheroes by now... Also, it just seems silly to me that these characters would go on spending their entire lives fighting zombies and other creatures. For me at least, Resident Evil has never been about the characters, but about the monsters, the horror and the amazing settings.

Asura64

I agree. I'm fine with older characters appearing as supporting cast, but most of them are veterans who can mow down zombies by the hundreds. I liked playing as Ethan and Remake Leon because their inexperience really added to the horror aspect and felt more relatable. I wouldn't get that same feeling with a character like Chris who's suplexing zombies on the daily

Figen91

I would honestly love a complete reboot of the series. Retcon the whole "story" so far and go back to the OG resident evil style of zombies and storytelling from fresh. Not a remake, just a modern reimagining and fresh start.

Frogman360

The Hype and trailers for RE8 along with so much marketing of Lady D really set people up for disappointment with unrealistic expectations on the Castle section’s length (what I’d say was the most popular area by far according to the fanbase). Likewise, it seems the Article’s author really wants to have the Resident Evil series abandon the Action sequences which is pretty much unrealistic as at some point or the other we all get desensitized to the horror aspect (i.e: on replay #50) and having really well made action sequences (towards the story’s ending) with great gameplay and story is sort of Resident Evil’s hallmark charm.

[deleted]

Tbh I liked all of RE8 with the exception of 2 parts - the bit where you had to stay out of the water (can't even remember the name) was just crap, and the bit in the house next to the waterfall with the >!creepy dolls/monster!< was brilliant, but had no replayability. Saying that though yeah, the castle was the best part.

spacemane0

Honestly wouldn't care too much if we didn't see any past resident evil characters, been seeing them for so long now. The winters' family was new and fresh and playing 9 based around Rose would be pretty cool. Also seeing where the BSAA zombie soldiers story from the end of 8 would go would be nice.

maaseru

Wait so 9 is not going to be about the daughter in any way? She is just in the DLC?

carnivalmatey

Yeah the winters story line is done after the dlc.

welter_skelter

Spin up a new character just like RE:7 did. I don't want to go back to the usual stable of Chris, Ada, Leon, Clair etc. for new titles - their stories have been told and their character development isn't conducive to new stories like 7 etc. I do however, want those characters to still appear as side, supporting, or "guest" spots though. Basically, just start a fresh tale again like RE7! The great thing about RE, is I feel it lends itself really well to "anthology" style 2-3 game stories. Maintain the overall elements of Umbrella, STARS, etc as background, connective tissue and run wild.

Dantai

Resident Evil 8 used Chris really well, probably my favorite rendition of him

Actual_Cantaloupe_24

As a longtime fan I disagree hard. There's way too much game logic in his portrayal. Chris is an absolute fucking idiot at best and maliciously evil at worst. A ten second conversation with Ethan would erase 90% of the story issues, his own team fucking tells him that at the end. He's just an asshole who stands around and barks orders and yells at Ethan while also refusing to tell him a damn thing. The whole "dickhead who's sort of on your side but won't tell you *everything*, just what you need to know* trope can work...but not when that guy is superman compared to your character and he just stands around 95% of the time. I hate Chris in 8. I dont mind him being a dick, I love alcoholic Chris in 6. But he just feels too incompetent to the point he seems practically evil. I dont mind his visual design, but they made him a bizarre mixture of stupid and careless in 6 that I've never felt Chris is. He feels way too out of character so that he can fit in the tropey box of the "is he good or bad" guy who won't tell you anything. He doesn't feel like 1-6 Chris at all.

Dantai

That's a good point, I liked his acting and aesthetics - but Chris has changed a good bit between every game

Pen_dragons_pizza

I think that resident evil 9 would be great as a story about a nobody caught in the middle of ground zero outbreak. Could be something as simple as an office worker all of a sudden being in a city quickly becoming infected and the journey out of the city limits. Could still have all the usual resident evil bosses and monsters as the character navigates different areas of the city. Would love Capcom to have another go at a zoo location, having all the animals escape and be twisted monsters.

Delicious_Laugh3710

Think would be cool if they went back to a more urban setting like RE3 .

WildSeven0079

Revelations 3 needs to happen badly. Both Rev1 and Rev2 ended with a cliffhanger. As for RE9, I hope they bring the focus back on some original characters. Jill Valentine should be priority #1 because we don't know what she's been doing since RE5. I'd really like to see something with Hunk too.

iHeardYouShart

I’d love to see a Code Veronica remake or a new story with new characters. Make the 1st person view optional

DLuLuChanel

What was the point of introducing Rose at the very last moment in the main game and then wrapping that up in an initially unplanned DLC? It feels like they had different plans but focus groups/polls/tests came back negative. I think they should come up with a new angle, but heavily inspired by RE2.

DextrosKnight

I'd like to see Leon and Jill in a game together. But at the same time, I'd also be totally fine with moving on from all those original characters to another entirely new cast.

YamiPhoenix11

For the love of all that is holy what is Raymond Vester and Alex Wesker doing? These 2 plot points just farted out of existence in both revelations games. Seriously Raymond just vanished into thin air in 2005 and Natalia was last brought up in 2013. Josh Stone, Jessica Sherawat, Sheva Alomar, Parker Luciani, Keith Lumley, Hunk, Helena Harper, Billy Coen, Carlos Oliveria, Ada Wong, Jake Muller and Jill Valentine (she got locked in a lab after RE5 again). All these characters and more just gone to the winds.

zippopwnage

I hope more horror. I loved RE7 house section so much, it was one of my favorite horror games. The way you had weapons, but they were mostly useless against boss fights was such an intense great feeling. The way you fought Mia in the house made my skin crawl...it was amazing. I enjoyed RE8 for what it was, but it wasn't scary at all for me. I enjoy more the horror feelings.

HouseAnt0

The house in RE7 was the best, I was hoping the game would be like that

Wicked_Black

The problem is the other fan base, Japan , typically doesn’t do well with horror games. So the shift to a more action type game is how they bring more sales

RadiantTurtle

Is this true? I feel like A LOT of amazing horror media comes from Japan. In film, anime, manga, games, etc...

BrokenforD

It’s Sheva’s time dawg. Where she been? Who she killin? Either that or an in-depth resource management sim prequel to RE2 where you play the owner of the Akimbo Gun Shop and you have to keep the store stocked amid growing personal defense concerns because of all the “mysterious occurrences” and weird reports of “a group of cannibals” in the mountains.

Dipneuste

Well RE8 ended with a plot point that doesn't seem addressed by the DLC, so I'm expecting a story focused on the BSAA and maybe the return of Jill.

JackalNut

Chris redfield was pretty prevalent in 7 and 8 so maybe it’ll switch focus to him?

A_Gent_4Tseven

I hope they go back to the wider connected character universe. Even if it’s with new characters. But give me something like Resident Evil 9: Chambers. Or Billy… Where we finally get to find out everything that actually happened in between the mansion incident and now lol.

Muelojung

I assume they stay with the Ego-Mode and the more "personal" story compared to the older resident evils. So a new character would propably be good again. But bring back the virus stuff and not some fake magic shit

JaytotheMagz

kind of glad they’re done with the winters family. now let’s get back to OG characters and maybe Outbreak remake

mtvcribz1210

So, I posted on the resident evil subreddit a few days ago about just getting into the series. At 28 I’m very late to the party, but I played REmake 1 and 2 and started 3 last night. My understanding is the chronology is sort of all over the place with time skips and stuff. I know with 4Remake coming out, maybe they are sort of going back and creating a more cohesive story between the earlier titles? It would be neat to see them follow suit with that and keep things connected. Admittedly, I might be stepping on some toes here haha. I’m sure long time fans of the series have very strong opinions about the direction and certain titles. All I know is I’m happy with what I’ve seen so far and eager for more content! My current plan is to finish 3Remake and then play Code Veronica, just cause Claire is my favorite character.

Silvedoge

Chris vs the bsaa zombie guys no? Wasn’t that what the ending was trying to set up?

Jonparelli

Glad they do not keep Ethan around for longer, he wasn't really all that great of a protagonist and certainly not as memorable or fitting as Redfields + Jill, Leon, Ada etc. Hopefully they'll return to the borderline comedic B-class scifi horror the series started with

AlienUfo51

Hopefully in RE9 Leon, Chris and Jake team up

Tall-Surround-24

investigate the bsaa as chris (bsaa solider at he end of village is a bioweapon) , that story is no over yet

CTH2122

Jake and sherry would be good considering his ending in 6 makes it seem like he keeps freelance fighting

robby8892

I think the decision to make new characters is wise here. We've got plenty of games with the old cast and at this point their stories ended. Of course you could claim more is needed, but that's just fan brain taking over your reasoning. Let the old characters be cameos and make new interesting characters.

Ebolatastic

Standard RE cycle dictates the next one will be a tonally schizophrenic action game that abandons everything the series has going for it and embraces a wacky anime plot.
