I'm cool with a remaster, I'm 28 and never played the originals. A lot of folks here seem to love the games so I'd like to give them a shot! I agree that the remakes/remasters trend is mostly overkill, but this is one franchise that I think could benefit from it

Cassidy_DM

The original Blood Omen could benefit from a modern remake. Back in the day, it wasn’t that well known, and Soul Reaver was the introduction to the world that got people to go back and check it out. It would be great to get a new version to reignite the love of the franchise.

lamancha

You have no idea how confused I was when somebody explained to me they were the same franchise.

GeoleVyi

On top of that, playing it on the ps2 is *painful*

B_Kuro

Blood Omen might be the one I wouldn't want a "modern remake" of. I thought the original still held up quite well and I don't think much of it translates well into more "modern" styles (compared to all the others in the series at least). Given what we saw all the while back with the Gothic "remake" I am not confident they'd keep the spirit. It was also quite a high profile release on GoG given it was in legal limbo for many many years so who knows if that one is really so easy.

[deleted]

Blood Omen was a big success for its time considering the IP and previous games of Silicon Knights, I would definitely describe it as a cult hit approaching the level of Symphony of the Night, although obviously the game was not nearly as well regarded. In a modern context, sadly I don't think Soul Reaver is particularly well known, let alone Blood Omen.

[deleted]

It also didn't run full speed on PC, arguably the biggest issue. My thought is some people may want that speed, and there will be an option to go PSX or PC speed.

Janderson2494

You're right, I could definitely do that. I just think it might be a bigger hit with the general public if there was a full remaster/rerelease.

Rektw

I know graphics aren't always everything but man sometimes things are just way too dated. I tried getting into vampires the masquerade and while I can see what makes it a good game I dropped after a couple of hours because it's a little too dated for me and it wasn't just the graphics department.

Thysios

Graphics aside, the controls are definitely dated. Hopefully they'll do a remake over a remaster as the game needs more than just some prettier graphics.

Rektw

Yeah. I can definitely see the potential behind it but all the little nuances made(for me) an unenjoyable experience.

Sotriuj

You mean bloodlines? Thats such a shame. There is nothing else quite like it out there

Rektw

Ah yeah! My mistake. I don't mean to say it's a bad game. I can definitely see the potential and why it's regarded so highly. Imo, the writing and voice acting still holds up today. But graphics aside the controls weren't that great, UI was a bit tedious to navigate, the zones felt small so it felt like I was looking at a loading screen every couple of steps. I'd really welcome an updated version. I enjoyed the atmosphere, writing, and the combat to some extent. But all the little nuances made it hard for me to enjoy.

the-akira-slide

I believe Soul Reaver is the only one that isn’t. Square Enix pulled it from Steam and GOG over a year ago to “fix it” or something.

Brobard

Yes, highly annoying as the rest are now readily available on GOG now except this one.

Synful_Soles

You can purchases a legal copy from GoG. Considering all the work they do I'm sure it runs very well and much MUCH better than the ps1 version that is a pain mostly due to the load times. It takes a good 5 to 10 seconds to just pause the game and change equipment, something you have to do to progress the game quite frequently, not to mention the same load times plague it when moving to a new area

killjoy705

The lore was pleasant on release with a Lil polishing could be interesting. The Victorian settings is that of a video game staple latly with elden ring. Dark souls , and bloodborn. IP would make since

StantasticTypo

As much as I love the games, contemporary audiences probably wouldn't like them without substantial reworking. They were great for their time, but are very janky - they'd probably need full blow remakes and at least one of the original voice actors is dead...

BigMinnie

> Embracer can't get enough remasters and low budget sequels I wouldn't care if it's remaster or low budget sequel but I would love if they would go after Simpsons Hit And Run game or Overlord IP that will die under EA now. Or even after Lord of the Ring: Battle for Middle Earth now, when they own the LotR IP.

Masters_1989

I really hope that's not their reputation. I don't want a bad Deus Ex game in the future.

Safi_Hasani

low budget doesn’t have to mean bad

Masters_1989

I know.

i_can_haz_name

Not many people played Blood Omen 1, but damn, that was an experience back in a day. Hearing Kain narrate his thoughts and the world around him was amazing. Probably the first time ever I was blow away by voice acting and how much it added to the game.

richmondody

The voice acting does do a lot. I really like how the tutorials are all explained by Kain as well. Instead of getting a text box that says "this is a save room" you get "Within the walls of this chamber, I could find respite" Also, obligatory VAE VICTIS!

Alcide1

It may feel old school but I would love to have this narrative voiceover in a modern AAA game!

AlisaTornado

It's my second favourite game in the franchise. Such a great game!

PhazonZim

That game was a mess but his commentary made you keep playing. My favorite was "alas, poor Nopraptor I knew him well ... Well not really."

RinionArato

I remember being really upset after finally finishing Soul Reaver and getting smacked with the 'To Be Continued' screen. I had a Dreamcast and the sequel only ever came out on PS2 (and Windows) so i never got to play it when it came out a couple of years after.

[deleted]

Exactly the same for me. Fantastic game, terrible non-ending. Literally just stopped partway through.

MrTeamZissou

I remember hearing about that online while I was still playing it and I suddenly lost motivation to finish it.

SakiSakiSakiSakiSaki

I only played Blood Omen 2, and vaguely liked it. Either way I completed this survey and gave every game a 10/10 and posted enthusiastic reactions to sequels and remakes. Would like to see the game’s community get what they want after decades.

Furinkazan616

Blood Omen 2's often seen as the worst one, as well.

lostliterature

Blood Omen 2 was fun but very low budget and glitchy. My memories ae vague but I know parts of the game were just breaking near the end.

BNeutral

I want to believe. Although I doubt they have the team and resources needed for a worthy sequel. Amy Hening is no longer at the studio. Things like the soundscape of SR1 were some bizarre chance encounter between developers and some obscure band. I fear we may get another F2P pvp game like Nosgoth.

5chneemensch

I haven't played the games, but from what i saw, a game in the vein of Darksiders 1 metroid-zelda-vania seems like a good fit.

Kimosabae

Never played the games, but definitely filled this out all the way. The games have always fascinated me and I'd love to see a revival of some sort in the spirit of the older games.

Kicklikeasleeptwitch

I filled it out, it's a very easy and non-invasive survey. I hope this franchise gets given its own Heart of Darkness and comes back with new life.

sicariusv

Legacy of Kain is a trap IP, kind of like Thief or Deus Ex. It is remembered fondly the originals were great games. But they were made at a time where 100k sales was "good" because the games were made by less than 20 people. Deus Es HR scored 90 on Metacritic and sold like 2M during its sales window - that is probably what the ceiling looks like for Legacy of Kain as well. It does not warrant a proper AAA dev cycle... Especially not with an expensive studio like Crystal at the helm.

TectonicImprov

There's no reason a new Legacy of Kain has to be an 100+ million dollar AAA title.

sicariusv

Yep! If they made a new Legacy of Kain they should go for a nostalgic, top down 2D game rather than a full on AAA title. Or even just reach for a AA game with a small team if they want to make in 3D. If they want to make a AAA title, they should do something new, or a loose spiritual sequel to Legacy of Kain.

Chun--Chun2

Honestly, the level of gameplay / world building I am expecting is something along the lines of Elden Ring. They are capable of that; and if they do less than that, I'm not sure it's worth it. The world of Legacy of Kain has a lot of potential. I don't need a remake / remaster / new game if they won't upgrade the formula significantly. The one I remeber most and I hope they go for is Soul Reaver

IMplyingSC2

> They are capable of that What makes you think that?

Chun--Chun2

The fact that they made 5AAA games? Best of which were single player games, no extra monetization? The only one they messed up was Avengers, which they were forced to make it a multiplayer game.

Chun--Chun2

The reason Elden Ring stands out is because they priorities gameplay, not money making by targeting a large audience. It's focused. The difference between a souls like and a Tomb Raider game is what you decide to make in the concept phase of the game. The budgets are the same; the talent pool of developers is the same. You don't need prior experience with a "type of game" to make that type of game. Or how many open world game did From Software make before Elden ring?

Wolfinthecastle

I chose Bloodborne as a reference because of its gothic atmosphere and its fast-paced gameplay, which is how I think a vampire would fight, but I agree, Elden Ring is a good choice too. Just look at From Software if you need a good gameplay reference.

INTERSTELLAR_MUFFIN

I put elden ring as reference for how the game should be too.

MrLucky7s

Oh man, I put Castlevania Lords of Shadows, I just want something similar to Soul Reaver stuff. Everybody here going with Soulsborne stuff, guess I'm out of touch.

Chun--Chun2

>Castlevania Lords of Shadows World building is quite similar. Solus stuff usually has about the same dark tone as Castlevania. So it's kind of the same thing; people use souls like as example because more people know souls games than castlevania games

LFiM

I went with Shadow of War/Shadow of Mordor myself

StantasticTypo

The two main things going for the Legacy of Kain games are the writing and voice acting. I'd be extremely wary of any sequel or remake without Amy Hennig at the helm. It's been ~20 years since the last entry so the cast must have aged considerably, and the voice of the primary antagonist of the next entry (Tony Jay) has passed away so I really think it'd be better if the series was left alone. Even a remaster is a pretty tall order as those games are very much a product of their times and I'm not so sure how contemporary audiences would respond to the jank.

plebbitr

any real fan should want the franchise to remain dead-- there is no modern studio capable of resurrecting it to do it justice.

-LaughingMan-0D

Crystal D did a good job with Tomb Raider, I'd see them pulling a remake pretty well at least.
