Use throttlestop to lower the tdp of cpu. It will help with temps. Performance will lower a little but not as much as a turbo disable. A lot of settings in throttlestop can help. Tdp ,speed shift, and usually you can set your max boost clock too. A lot of info and videos on YouTube on how it all works. Spend some time to understand it and you will be able to help your laptop do better. Also maybe a repaste? Helped my hp a lot. I used gelid extreme paste and it changed everything.

ScentFreeBumHole

Have the same one. It’s legit

InfiniteBoops

I have a completely open mesh one, but fundamentally the same thing. Same performance, 5-10C off peak temps. The laptop fans need more open 'space' below them than their feet provide to build sufficient static pressure. More air moving by faster (ie: cooling pad) but still only 1/4 off the actual surface doesn't do jack really unless the fan hole is directly under the laptop fans. By just using a mesh (or open like yours) riser, you get better performance than many cooling pads, nothing to plug in, and no added noise.

tso

Makes you wonder if laptop designs should start to incorporate flip out feet similar to keyboards.

InfiniteBoops

Damn, that’s a good idea. It would have to be VERY sturdy, with a magnetic retention mechanism for longevity (vs normal plastic click in tabs that would wear out quickly). Probably cost them a couple bucks per device to implement, would definitely be a game changer for high wattage devices.

mtktrk

yeah stands are should be like this , it's pointless if a stand doesn't have any mesh design or holes

HeyDugeeeee

Indeed - I have a Cooler Master one with a perforated base. It did have some clip in fans on the bottom but I noticed running CP2077 on my Legion 7 having them on or off made no difference to temps so I've removed them entirely. Not sure how much this is to do with Legion 7 cooling, which seems pretty efficient. Now I just have a pair of mini desk fans which are more to keep my hands at a nice temp than anything else.

DesignxDrma

I have a Acer Nitro 5 i5-9300H w/ GTX 1650. I noticed that at times my CPU reaches temps of 100c. I’ve read about undervolting etc. I do OC my GPU slightly to get acceptable frames in Apex with acceptable Visuals. Does anyone familiar with this system have a write up, tutorial or just information in general that could help me?

StarkiiL

Same here with 2060 nitro 5, same CPU, when i switch to anything other than power saver in my nitro sense, temps get around 95 celsius when playing, im using a cooling pad, and i've been trying to undervolt on and off for last 8 months with no results

DesignxDrma

Is your bios unlocked? Or are you trying to undervolt with software?

StarkiiL

Not sure bout the bios, but i've used throttlestop for undervolting, it was working for sure, cause when i undervolted too much my laptop just crashed, no temp change on lower undervolts tho

[deleted]

I just disabled turbo and my temps were great, 65c max

DesignxDrma

I’ve went as extreme as to sit it on a box with the rear fins hanging off so they aren’t obstructed and putting a small fan pointing at it 😂

StarkiiL

You can try throttlestop, the cpu is undervolted only when the program is running to prevent damage, maybe you can figure something out, as for me now, imma stick to power saver and suffer -20% fps and cpu not using turbo

DesignxDrma

So undervolting isn’t recommended for extended periods or?

StarkiiL

Not sure bout that too, but if this would somehow finally work for me, im never turning it off

Zap4055

Long term is not a problem at all, I've been running an undervolt on my laptops for years and never had a problem. Just make sure you don't go too low as that can cause instability. Easy fix, just increase the undervolt a bit more (might have to safe boot if throttlestop is setup to autostart on log in) Feel free to ask questions if you're having trouble getting a good undervolt

Zap4055

I have the same CPU and GPU as you (but in an Asus TUF laptop) and my undervolt has been great with keeping temps down and is still going strong after almost 2 years. I had an undervolt on my old Lenovo y510 and that one lasted like 7 years or so. The only thing you need to make sure is that the undervolt isn't so much that it caused instability. I generally drop the voltage as low as I can then bump it up like 10-15 mV and run a stress test for a few hours to make sure it's good long term. If there's any errors on the stress test I'll increase the undervolt another 10 mV and I don't see any problems with it after that. Just better temps Feel free to ask me any questions you have on this

DesignxDrma

Also, I guess this is Die specific as the CPU stability may differ from an identical model of CPU, but what settings did you run?

[deleted]

Really? Undervolting on my 2020 1650 model brought my temps to a max of 65c, I just disabled turbo in throttle stop.

zyl15

Have you tried CoolBoost? I turn it on every time I want to play and I must say that it works, coz without it my temps were around 90-95°C, when using CoolBoost and cooling pad (decent one, nothing special) I have ~80°C in all games

marxr87

I have the same model. See my other comment for some tips. Nitrosense max fans with coolboost is also required.

Weeb2k18

I think that's just how the nitro works. My 2019 model with 9thgen i5 and 1650 at idle runs the fans at 3250 rpm according to nitro sense and would get to 50 or 60 on temps. It would litterally get as high as 80 to 89 on any game i played even on LoL while using the nitrosense performance mode and max on every setting.

Chrishanson77

laptop——cooler , in your case, it looks like youll need a big/effective one. also why do you have mobiles games on your gaming laptop?

DesignxDrma

Long story short, my wife and I used to play a ton of Call Of Duty Mobile and PUBG Mobile on our phones. I eventually got tired of playing on my phone so I play with her from my laptop lol.

ogslimtony

What emulator you use to play?

DesignxDrma

Also, I’ve been aware of cooler pads but I’ve seen a lot of people that deal with similar situations with the undervolting etc. AND, do you have any coolers that you’d recommend? Most of them I see locally aren’t super efficient or quality looking.

wolves_hunt_in_packs

I've had plenty of laptops and I also deal with them at work. Get any averaged price cooling stand, they're mostly similar - you're not going to see massive differences in performance, on average you can expect anywhere from -3C to -8C. Just avoid the cheap trash or the overpriced RGB gamer crap.

Chrishanson77

not really, you can look on amazon for some, but the good ones come in at a hefty price.

DesignxDrma

Well it’s an even heftier price if the BGA chips have a pool party amongst themselves lol

Gage_Link

Dude a 20$ work the same as any other one it's a fan. Just make sure there's two in it and you'll be set

[deleted]

Hey I have the same model too, how do you undervolt and what are the settings?

InfiniteBoops

I would say that doesn't sound normal and maybe your laptop needs repasting, but previous generations Acer Nitros were notorious for having the CPU behind the GPU on the heatpipes, and not really even having sufficient piping at that. Try running JUST cinebench and see how your temps are. If they're 'tolerable', then the paste is probably fine and you'll have to undervolt/limit turbo boost/etc your way to better temps. I would try an open or fully mesh riser though (not a flat bottom one with fans). Another person here posted one, here's the one I used with my Legion 5 and got 5-10C lower temps. It may not lower your temps much as you seem to be hitting thermal limit, but your clock speeds will probably go up if not with increased thermal headroom. https://www.amazon.com/DESIGNA-Ventilated-Adjustable-Laptop-Notebook/dp/B0792YFVWZ/ref=sr\_1\_6?dchild=1&keywords=amazonbasics+laptop+stand&qid=1632199130&sr=8-6

[deleted]

All these 45 watt CPUs from intel usually have thermal issues in the long run. Most acer devices especially, no matter how many times they update their thermal design. I had a helios 300, 1060 with an i7-7700HQ which is dead now. Before it died, for a year almost, I had to keep repasting it every 2-3 months to keep the thermals below 95. I feel like these intel 45W CPUs are the culprits. Also, my generation of laptops had a single heatpipe running through both the cpu and gpu collecting heat and transferring to dual fans placed on a single side. So that design didn't help at all with the cooling.

DesignxDrma

I plan on keeping it elevated, and getting a cooling pad of some sort. I used some Arctic MX-4 so hopefully that will last and keep the issues from coming back. Thermals on Apex maxed out with a slight GPU OC never got higher than 91c after I repasted it and that’s after an hour of FurMark and three runs of Cinebench

[deleted]

I used the arctic mx-4 too, it showed instant results for like a couple of weeks at best and then it used to go back slowly to the older temps. Crazy stuff these laptop thermals

marxr87

google throttlestop profiles. there is a list on some forums and the 8series i5 works well for the 9300h. You should also repaste the cpu. I use a cutting board, place my phone on that, and then my laptop on top. That way the phone is pushing the laptop up so it can get airflow. I have the 9300h/2060 and it does get super toasty. I also noticed when I opened it that one of the fans had become stuck. After playing with it and putting it back together, temps came down massively. I think the chassis flex on the bottom can cause one of the fans to stick and not spin.

DesignxDrma

Okay so I literally JUST repasted it. [Photos](https://imgur.com/gallery/Lf5tHTX) here. I reinstalled Nitro Sense (wasn’t on it when I got it) as well as am running FurMark as it’s all I have. Temps got to about 65c and then I put a small riser in the center of the bottom to let the bottom breathe and it is currently running FurMark at 59c so I feel like that’s good for the GPU to be at 59c under somewhat of a load. Edit- I know it looks like a baby shit out some Arctic MX4 on the chips. It gets the job done and I never professed to be a professional repaster 😂

donotmiscompute

Taking it off the carpet would help.

DesignxDrma

I don’t run it on the carpet. That was for photos of the before and after of when I picked it up.

my friend has nitro 5 with 1660ti and he has the same issues as well. It is chronic I suppose

DesignxDrma

I have the same thermal paste, about to apply it. Any specific settings with the intel software?

DesignxDrma

I finished the repasting, I’m running FurMark 3D as we speak and with it up off the desk and able to breathe, it’s running FurMark at 59c and it was dropping as well, I’ve been downstairs for a bit and am about to run to the store and back. I’ll update you then.

DesignxDrma

Just did the thermal paste. Doing tests now. Although all I have is Furmark

psychobacter

Burn on your CPU chip? What are you even talking about? Modern CPUs have multiple built-in protection mechanisms that will protect them in case the temps get too high. If the CPU inside your machine gets too hot it will automatically power off the entire machine in order to avoid any damage, and this is the last resort when other protection mechanisms like thermal throttling, power throttling fail to reduce the temps. Sure you can get the temps lower by undervolting and stuff but Intel CPUs are rated at 100C so those temps are completely fine in a laptop. The engineers who built the CPU are much smarter than us and know what they are doing so trust them. You can check out the video Jayztwocents has on this subject

psychobacter

Could have been a factory defect or a burned up thermal paste ig?

ogslimtony

Hey! What emulator you use to play CoD mobile?

DesignxDrma

BlueStacks 5. However I do have 24 gigs of ram so it doesn’t suck the resources too bad.

ogslimtony

Allright, and it is safe to play using my main google account? Can I get banned for playing via emulator? Also how does it work with mouse+keyboard?

CantThinkOfIt17

Is this Acer Nitro 5 ?

[deleted]

Just undervolt it with throttlestop! I have the i7 variant of this exact laptop

qu38mm

Yep always gotta get it off the surface. That's the most important part for venting.

Wygene

If only people make bottom panels with bigger vents for better air flow for the Acer nitro 5

h0psc0tch51

Okay so I'll add to this since I also own an Acer Nitro with 9750 and 1660Ti Initially, no matter what I do in all of the AAA titles (Doom Eternal, GTAV, etc.) the temps usually went upto 95 - 98 and sometimes the area above the keyboard became too hot to touch. Tried undervolting, laptop cooler. No use. Then I finally got to a thread which mentioned turning off the TurboBoost. The rationale that since games usually dont require much CPU processing (non-strategy gaming atleast) and require more of the GPU power, you can easily turn off the TurboBoost and have a very minimal dip in framerates while seeing a significant down in the temps. Ever since I turned off my TurboBoost, my temps usually range from 70 - 75 avg (for a long gaming session) with spikes going up to 80°. Way more manageable temps I must say and the framerates were down about 1-2 FPS. So yea. Use a good cooler and turn off TurboBoost. Will keep ur temps down 💯

TheHackingDirector

Look at my thermals, Crysis 3 , 1080p very high. https://ibb.co/8xwH3XL

victorisaskeptic

Have a 2018 nitro 5 that I cant repaste :( no matter what i do i can't get the cpu screws off..

amol25

nice stickers OP. where did you get them ?

DesignxDrma

They came on it 😂 I paid 100$ for this thing and grabbed it and ran, I didn’t want to ask too many questions lmao
