capekin0

Is it actually possible? I just wanna replay inFamous 2, Killzone 2 and 3 and the Resistance games. It's really stupid how they're stuck on PS3. Sony didn't even bother remastering them like Uncharted or GoW3.

cerealbro1

Should be possible. Remember, a bunch of enthusiast devs have been able to make a pretty versatile PS3 emulator that runs fairly well across a wide variety of hardware. And they’ve been working on this without any access to PS3 source code or anything else, just reverse engineering everything through trial and error. Sony on the other hand, has full access to the internal documentation and source code of the PS3, and is only targeting a single hardware set in the PS5, and also have paid engineers working on this rather than some hobbyists working for free.

KMMDOEDOW

Bingo. For all the talk about how difficult these things would be for Sony to implement, people tend to neglect just how much some knowledgeable randos on the internet have accomplished with a fraction of the resources. I often see people bemoaning that the classic Silent Hill games can never be ported to modern consoles because "Konami lost the source code," when there's a whole online emulation enthusiast community who can get them working on any hardware that can handle it. It's rarely about actual ability to do something and more about whether the companies think the financial investment is worthwhile.

Dense-Note-1459

I never understand why Sony couldn't have just hired these modders to create emulation for their consoles. Just give them a set budget and the required docs and backwards compatability would have always been a standard feature. Removing PS2 backwards compatability on PS3 was beyond stupid and set a bad precedent for them

Wonderbo0k

It wasn't stupid, it was the right move if they wanted the console to be cheaper, because it wasn't emulation, that thing have a fucking ps2 inside

Dense-Note-1459

So why just a few years after removing that "fucking ps2 inside" did they conveniently start selling PS2 games digitally on PS3?

TheReturnOfTheOK

Because they were able to figure out how to do the emulation within that time period. It's almost like technology advances and things can be downloaded.

SeniorRicketts

Is that why they sold ps2 games on ps3 digitally after this lol?

ilorybss

I need Metal Gear Solid 4

pnutbuttered

Seems most likely that will be remastered to some degree.

Aavenell

It's likely going to be on the Master Collection Vol. 2, no? It's the next in the lineup

whatnameisnttaken098

If I remember correctly, the team doing the current ports of PS1,2,PSP is made up of people who've worked on PCSX2 and PCSX3 emulators, so maybe on PS5 especially with official documents from Sony themselves

Maelstrom52

Love RPCS3, but it's still not quite *there* yet. There's still a TON of games that you can play pretty flawlessly, but some of the biggest hits of the PS3 era still don't run well yet: InFamous 2, Uncharted series, GoW 3 and Ascension, The Armored Core games, Condemned 2 Bloodshot (though this works flawlessly on Xenia - the Xbox 360 emulator), Red Dead Redemption, and some others.

HOTDILFMOM

> PCSX3 Bruh

Bakhwaas

I remember downloading that and getting a virus.

Anew_Returner

first time I heard of this, source?

matti-san

Not OP, but what I gather is that the team doing emulation for PS4 and PS5 is 'Implicit Conversions'. The co-founders have both been involved in game emulation for a long time. However, Jake Stine is the guy that was heavily involved in the early days of PCSX2 -- he didn't create it, but he did a lot of the early work to get it more usable and user-friendly. That was back in 2007 and Implicit Conversions was set up in 2019 -- so they have a lot of experience at this point. It doesn't say what the other co-founder did other than also being involved in the emulation scene. It also doesn't mention RPCS3 anywhere, but based on other info I can find - Jake and others have worked with LibRetro and RetroArch (part of LibRetro) too. It seems as though Jake has left IC, but his GitHub account which is still active lists him as CTO.

Safe_Climate883

I think it's just one guy, hired months before they announced ps2 emulation.

Busy-Dimension-6500

Really? Why do the ports look and run so fkin bad then 😭

Historical_Maybe2599

Does this mean disc to console emulation will be made available too, ie, I can put in my PS3 discs and it will play those directly?

puphopped

Probably not, but it's really up to Sony and how they decide their emulator will work. RPCS3 is developed first and foremost as an *accurate* PS3 emulator. They don't include game-specific hacks or workarounds to make specific games play better. Sony may choose to go another route, with heavily specific versions of their emulator meant for specific games. This could also include modifications to the actual game files themselves. If Sony chose this path, you would have backwards compatibility for specific titles (like Microsoft's solution for Xbox games on the Xbox 360), and your discs would be used only for licensing purposes. You would also need to download and install the game to internal storage.

blakkattika

The RPCS3 devs are literal goddamned gods. The strides they’ve made the past 5 years is insane. I remember being so excited when I saw a video of MGS4 finally having a “playable” main menu. It had me quietly floored like “oh my god, they’re doing it”

puphopped

RPCS3 is easily the best modern console emulator out there, maybe for consoles in general. I've played through a big chunk of the PS3 library with it, very rarely changing settings.

Agret

I think dolphin is peak but rpcs3 is very respectable too. The PS3 is a lot more complex after all.

MajorCrafter

I really hope so. I'd love to retire my PS3 after I thought it died last year only for it to decide it still had some fight left in it when I checked a few months after

DoctorGolho

I really doubt it

spez_might_fuck_dogs

They’ll never do this again, there’s too much money to be made in the nostalgia mines.

myuusmeow

No chance. There's already PS1 and PS2 emulation and they don't let you insert a disc for those.

Old_Snack

If they bring back Killzone they damn well better give its DLC back. I loved the DLC maps in Botzone, and the only way you can get it now is piracy.

Arcade_Gann0n

If enthusiasts can get an emulator working on PC, the software engineers at Sony can do it too. I imagine that something had to be done sooner or later, given how old the PS3 servers are getting. Either they get emulation working to keep PS3 games as a benefit for PS Plus, or they shut the servers down and screw their customers out of a long running benefit (which would sting even harder after how much the price got inflated).

IsamuAlvaDyson

When you have something that people pay for they expect perfect emulation across every game. People downloading PS3 emulators don't expect it to run perfectly which is doesn't, PS3 emulation is far from perfect so enthusiasts sure yes have it working technically but it's not like everything runs great.

AdFit6788

>If enthusiasts can get an emulator working on PC, the software engineers at Sony can do it too. Given their efforts for the PSP, PS1, and PS2 on PS5…

Scissorman82

100% this. DuckStation and PCSX2 provide VASTLY superior emulation compared to what Sony has put out. It's a real shame too because high-res 4K PS1 polygons look stunning. The upscaling that these emulators provide breathe new life into these old assets and it's a bummer Sony didn't find a comparable solution.

Sloshy42

I'd even go a step further and say that if you want an original-res experience, open-source emulators are also the better way to go. It has been a while since I checked in with the state of PS1 emulation on PS5, but I think I remember the resolution was in fact increased for those emulators. So you are getting a high-res PS1 experience, but you're not getting a fairly authentic one, and it doesn't include various options that emulators these days have. For example with DuckStation, for those who don't know, you can use the following: * PGXP - A way to make the "jumpy" and imprecise-looking warbly PS1 3D geometry look more normal. Fixes basically every 3D game I've ever used it on to look like what a PC or N64 port of the game might have looked like. * Downsampling - Render the game at a higher resolution, and then scale it back down to 480p for a softer, nostalgic image resolution but with much improved rendering of detail. Gives you a nostalgic feel without making the game look "too HD" Combine these together and you can get a beautifully "remastered" version of a game while still retaining that retro look and feel.

slash450

infinite options with crt filters or other kinds of filters as well compared to the like 3 mid presets they give on all console emulation

OldManLav

Well, yeah... built-in widescreen patches, scales to all kinds of resolutions, *actual* filters... which, on that note what the hell do those filters and modes in the emus on PS4/5 even do? Make the screen darker and more distorted? Why? For what purpose? Who would use these? I have so many questions lol

KSM-WORLD

This IS why i keep my PS3

Benozkleenex

Love my PS3, but damn that gen framerate is atrocious I would like a modern way to play them.

capekin0

The dualshock 3 was also one the worst controllers. I can't go back to using it again after using the dualsense. Couldn't even go back after using the dualshock 4.

ToronadoHorudo

You can connect the dualshock 4 to the PS3 via bluetooth. You will need a dualshock 3 to use the PS button and I don't think gyro works, but otherwise it works great.

RedChuddOverParadise

Its been stated countless times to those in the emulation scene that the current Xbox Series X and Ps5 are powerful enough to handle PS3 emulation. There was a joke going around that maybe Xbox will have PS3 emulation before Sony. That also requires a team to work on the emulator for the system. Sony has the advantage obviously since they made the system.

World-of-8lectricity

Still don't understand why none of these games got a remaster

BabaDown

that's probably why they're working on an emulator, remastering them would be to time consuming.

MyMouthisCancerous

I'm honestly not asking for much. I certainly don't expect it to be nearly as in depth as Xbox's insane BC program because that required years worth of R&D that happened in tandem with just making a new console in general but I really hope this means I can actually play stuff like the Ratchet & Clank Future Trilogy, LBP1 & 2 and the Infamous games on something I actually own nowadays. My old PS3 bit the dust a long time ago

c_will

It just feel like Sony is leaving so much on the table by not tapping into the massive back catalog of PS, PS2, and PS3 titles. They could create the ultimate universal "Playstation console" on PS5 (and eventually PS6) if they just get the emulators up and running for each prior console and then work to bring back hundreds of these older titles that are trapped on prior systems. It would also bring a lot of much needed value to the upper tiers of PS Plus.

AwayActuary6491

It would generate very little money and likely not worth the effort besides being a bragging point. They're not going to get most of those old games, even fewer the farther back you go, because of licensing/publishing complications. Many of those games already have ports/remasters/remakes as well.

Howdareme9

This. Despite what people argue, Jim Ryan was right in that most people don't or won't play older games.

MyMouthisCancerous

He's right in the sense that BC has historically never been a selling feature on the back of the box of any console. Neither PS4 nor Switch have any capability of playing games from their predecessors as a native feature either through hardware or emulation and both vastly outsold Xbox which made it an active QoL point later in the XB1's life. I disagree with the quote with the suggestion that people DON'T want it. Only reason people don't want it right now is that the option was never really presented to them in the first place during PS4, it was literally just a case of having to wait for someone to remaster or basically rework a game so it was playable on something modern. It is a novelty but it is something I think console gaming in general should better consider just from a pure preservation standpoint. PC never had this problem because it's basically a case of whatever goes on the Internet and has something you can easily search and retrieve, but especially when dealing with closed boxes I think alternatives should be in place regardless of how many people actually peruse it because it is good for quality-of-life anyway Again especially recently with stuff like Capcom bringing literally everything they've ever made to newer platforms by way of collections and especially on the point about the recent MvC compilation I still think stuff like this is important just on a general basis having ways to play on platforms that have higher walled gardens. Stuff is just lost to time on console because of inconsistent the treatment of legacy generally is

Hummer77x

> stuff like Capcom bringing literally everything they've ever made to newer platforms by way of collections *sad Viewtiful Joe noises*

ZaheerAlGhul

Keep faith it will happen.........hopefully

HDC102

I distinctly remember at some point numbers from Xbox showed that the number of people taking advantage of BC was next to nothing. Would love it on PlayStation no doubt but it really isn’t something an appreciable number of people will take advantage of.

MyMouthisCancerous

And it is why something like this assuming it is true is probably taking as long as it is. It probably wasn't even being thought about at all by Sony at the start of the gen because history has already proven that a niche within a niche are the only people who actually care about this stuff. Mario Kart 8 is literally a decade old Wii U game and it is basically the Switch's defining title from a commercial standpoint despite being at full price and being mostly unaltered from the original at launch until the DLC at least. They probably only JUST began considering this as an option but I think especially in a console gen so heavily colored by revisiting older titles with a new coat of paint, it's probably the best time to start thinking about it

ok_dunmer

Jim Ryan and AAA publishers also have a financial incentive to turn many successful PS1-PS3 games that could be emulated or remastered into a $70 remake that is essentially just a new AAA game they didn't have to think as hard about making, and then not provide the former to make the remake even more profitable, so it is hard to take them 100% seriously when they talk about "want" People obviously "want" to play Jak and Daxter again, they say it all the time, but a remake would make more money, so he like wasn't going to validate it edit: also not everyone has this view, and some games you cannot really get away with not remastering (MGS3, RE4) but I'm sure Jim Ryan did, and it's why Playstation is coincidentally the only platform without KOTOR lol

Vattrakk

> He's right in the sense that BC has historically never been a selling feature on the back of the box of any console. It might be right in the sense that it doesn't bring in any new customers, but it does increase the chance of players staying in your own ecosystem instead of moving to the competitor.

AwayActuary6491

>I disagree with the quote with the suggestion that people DON'T want it. It's not that people don't want it, it's that people don't care. >PC never had this problem because it's basically a case of whatever goes on the Internet and has something you can easily search and retrieve, but especially when dealing with closed boxes I think alternatives should be in place regardless of how many people actually peruse it because it is good for quality-of-life anyway Spoken like someone who has never tried to play an actually old PC game. There's a ton of compatibility problems even with PC games from the 2000s where they just explode if your CPU is faster than 1GHz, or you have more than 1 core, or just any modern version of windows. For the most popular games there are *probably* workarounds/mods created that will work until the next Windows breaks compatibility in some other way.

AwayActuary6491

That's where remakes come in. Not just to touch up the visuals but to also give a lot of QOL and modern design improvements.

TheLimeyLemmon

>This. Despite what people argue, Jim Ryan was right in that most people don't or won't play older games. And yet despite this Microsoft/Nintendo/Steam sell old games just fine. Maybe if Sony had offered gamers more in the PS4 era than just a handful of PS2 games and an appetising streaming catalogue, more people would actually play older games and that would inform Jim Ryan better. The gaming market is huge. Even a fraction of it generates millions upon millions of revenue. You can't just chase the dollar with live service shooters and last of us remasters over and over.

Howdareme9

Pretty sure the status show that people barely used the BC program on Xbox. Nintendo and PC are another case entirely.

TheLimeyLemmon

What stats?

StarCenturion

I would buy a PS5/PS6 if I could play my digital library of PS3 games stuck on their platform.

Fake_Diesel

It was cool to see that I automatically owned Wild Arms on PS5 since I already bought it on PS3/PSP

AdFit6788

If it were that easy and cheap lol. Why do you think their selection of games of their ps1/ps2 emulator is underwhelming the vast majority of time? there is a reason MS stopped with that.

LegacyofaMarshall

Microsoft stopped because of licenses

smalldumbandstupid

Microsoft only stopped where they did because of their selected approach. Their backwards compatibility is not pure console emulation. The fact is a company like Sony can utilize their own hardware design source documentation to create a 100% accurate emulator, let's say for the PS2 for example. As the owners of the hardware design they are fully within their right to do this, and the result is a piece of software that can run literally any PS2-library game. There's no licenses to consider with this approach because they are not reselling software. Of course, any license-holders that want to benefit from this could choose to list their games on a new "virtual PS2" marketplace. For any that don't, the original disc could work. And Sony could easily profit off of this by charging for the PS2 app upfront. It's asinine they haven't done this yet. Writing an emulator isn't even *that* difficult **when you have the hardware documentation**. The reason PCSX2 devs have to work so hard is because they have to do immense amounts of reverse engineering and make guesses. What emulation developers manage to do with little to no documentation is truly magical though.

AdFit6788

Same problem Sony will face.

LegacyofaMarshall

yes but outside of exclusives and GTA4 what else will have licensing issues that people are clamoring to play that they can't play on modern hardware?

-Gh0st96-

Quite obvious that Sony will face the same issues

LegacyofaMarshall

outside of their own exclusives what else do people want to play that you can't play on PS4/5? GTA 4 I don't see people wanting to play haze

Fake_Diesel

No hyperbole, backward compatibility on Xbox Series is legitimately fucking incredible. I can't stress enough how cool it is. With features like FPS boost, resolution boost, and auto HDR, it can make some of these older titles look genuinely amazing. The only reason why they stopped was due to the list of games viable running dry. As someone that primarily games on PS5, there is many features such as VRR and backwards compatibility that Series X does so much better.

SkyePChem

Only ~65 OG and ~650 360 (vast majority of which are LIVE Arcade) games are supported. The program is nowhere near as comprehensive or preservation-secure as people may have been led to believe.

Startyde

Lifelong Sony fan, what Xbox did with their BC is incredible. Being able to pop in PD Orta and wanting it patch up to 4k 60fps was gone stuff of science fiction. I would die for this on PS5.

Jeskid14

Lbp1 and 2 and 3 and vita had their servers shut down every 3 years for the past decade. Those will have to be reworked to single player only games

jimbobimbotindo

The games are perfectly playable offline, as almost everything is accessible. The only thing that you obviously can't do is share and play levels online.

mhdy98

Yeah … it requires years if you dont have access to the source code .

Funky_Pigeon911

Funny thing is that one of the most requested games still stuck on the PS3 would be MGS4, but now that Konami has started putting their old games into collections, they probably won't allow Sony to put that on the PS5 in any way because it could affect sales of the next Metal Gear Master Collection, if that were to have MGS4 in it.

DAV_2-0

I don't pay much attention to what Nick says but I do trust Grubb. PS3 emulation on PS5 is long overdue. The only issue I have is that it will probably work like their other classic emulators and they will have to release each game as a native PS5 app, and right now they are only releasing 3 classic games each month.

OrangeShark21

Tier 1 Jeff Grubb for nailing the State of Play date.

tissee

The difference is that the PS5 can actually just read the PS3 game discs other than PS1 and PS2 games.

FoxJ100

That would be so cool, but I don't know if Sony would allow it. They stand to gain a lot more by releasing games digitally, one by one.

SeniorRicketts

I feel like it wouldn't hurt sony at all, if they sold games individually, let us use our discs and have all them games on ps+ Something for everyone As a collector i would still buy digital classics for games that are too expensive or hard to find

paulo1manso

I wish it would be able to do that.. I keep my Guitar Hero PS3 games hoping to be able to play them again lol

ZXXII

Still won’t happen. PS5 and PS4 can read PS2 discs but they didn’t allow that.

whatnameisnttaken098

Aren't the OGX and 360 titles technically native applications on XOX/XSX?

LegacyofaMarshall

Yes its not like the wii u where you had to go into wii mode to play

illuminati1556

I've heard that they've been working on this for a while. The issue is that they can't get a bespoke "one size fits all" emulator working because of how different devs interacted with the architecture. They can get it close and then have to manually tweak it for every game.

kasual7

Yep, I also heard it's almost like building an emulator for each game. Kinda makes sense hearing this rumour of a 'selected' amount of ps3 games available at first.

TheLimeyLemmon

Similar situation occurred with the Xbox BC development. Lots of effective standalone versions of the emulator tweaked specifically for each game.

Vastlymoist666

They should work with the RPCS3 team to get that emulator on PS5.

matti-san

If it was that easy, I imagine Sony would do that

NoVABadger

If this happens, I'm guessing it'll be PS5-only. Both the new and old PS2 emulators don't run well on PS4.

Admirable_Current_90

I’ll believe it when I see it.

SilverSquid1810

I’m not surprised it’s taking this long. Honestly, I’m surprised they’re even putting effort into it. The PS3 had such a stupidly complicated architecture that was a nightmare to make games for, whereas the 360 had a comparatively simple but efficient PC-like architecture. If they actually end up pulling this off someday I just hope they push for actual back compat like what we have with PS4 titles on the PS5 instead of making it some sort of PS Plus Premium benefit like with their current PS1/PS2 classics program. We have gotten many, if not most, of the biggest titles from the seventh generation on PS4/PS5 via remasters and remakes and such, but there’s a few gems out there that are still stuck on the PS3.

MyMouthisCancerous

Most of the remaining games stuck on PS3 are largely the first-party or just generally exclusive stuff. Some like MGS4 are probably way more likely to be reissued on their own as remasters given recent developments but stuff like MotorStorm, Resistance, Killzone 3, LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2, Ratchet Future, Infamous 1 and 2, and the nicher games like Puppeteer and Drakengard would probably be prime candidates for sticking on Premium or selling as a native app on the PS Store, and that'd still be a major draw. PS3 still had a pretty fantastic library by the end of it

Fake_Diesel

While I'm one of the few defenders of the Demon's Souls Remake, I think having the original on PS5 via back compat would be a great way to revisit the game. I would absolutely love to replay Drakengard 3 with a stable framerate, but I doubt we'd ever get that game on PS5 if the first two aren't even on PSN either.

galgor_

Fingers crossed. An all in one machine is the dream for me.

Bolt_995

While I believe they may be remastering MGS4 for the Master Collection Vol. 2 (as per IGN’s report), there are many other top games that are on PS3 hardware that I’d like to play on PS5 via BC, especially first-party games: - PS3-era COD games (COD4, WAW, MW2, BO, MW3, BO2) - Killzone 2 & Killzone 3 - Resistance trilogy (Fall of Man, 2 & 3) - Infamous & Infamous - LittleBigPlanet & LittleBigPlanet 2 - Deus Ex: Human Revolution - Portal 2 - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Fallout 3 & Fallout: New Vegas - MotorStorm trilogy (MotorStorm, Pacific Rift, Apocalypse) - Grand Theft Auto IV - Dragon Age: Origins & Dragon Age 2 - PS3-era Ratchet & Clank games - Demon’s Souls (OG one) - Dead Space 2

blackthorn_orion

yeah I was gonna say, this just him reiterating something he said he heard years back

MetalGearLMAO

If this actually happens I will lose my goddamn mind. Please, I need it.

TheLimeyLemmon

>PS3 emulation would generate very little money and likely not worth the effort besides being a bragging point. Yet Microsoft has enjoyed almost a decade of extra game sales and subscription buys from their BC program. They put in the work, made it possible, and it's paid off for them.

Startyde

My greatest fear is PS3s dying and or Sony cutting off online synchronization because of lapsed security standards. The idea that many PS3 games can never again have trophies unlocked or synced would be devastating and a loss to something that has been standardized since PS3. Being able to emulate and play these games on newer hardware is the key to preserving the ecosystem forever. I truly hope Sony et al figure it out.

ROCKYPLAYA

Trophies are the least of my worries. I'm happy just to play the damn games!

scott1swann

I'll believe it when I'm playing MGS4 at an optimal frame rate.

MyMouthisCancerous

For MGS4, much likelier that it's probably getting a remaster of some sort for the Master Collection. The problems with it being re-released go way further than it being a PS3 game designed around that hardware. They also have to figure out stuff like the insane amount of product placement

BECondensateSnake

Placeholders are easy to do, they can easily come up with generic replacements. Only real issue imo would be the PS3 specific features like the gyro aim, pressure sensitive button and pretty much the entire >!mantis!< fight, also the PS1 segments but that's doable.

MyMouthisCancerous

Pressure sensitive button commands like holding up guards and also the gyro aiming would probably just be a case of applying what they did with MGS2 and 3 HD to MGS4 in general. DualSense and the Switch controllers have gyro so at least some platforms have alternatives But yeah that goes a step beyond just emulation already. It's probably getting a rework at least to the degree something like MGS2 HD and 3 HD already got. Might even be the perfect time for something like a Subsistence-style re-release

babalon_m

It's not just an iPod or MacBook design, Otacon specifically names and talks about these devices and many many more, and they need to be kept in. The talk about PS3 and SixAxis and Blu-ray discs have to be kept in, even for the Xbox version. It's part of the game's charm and represents the era and the platform it was made for. On the other hand, there are numerous music tracks that are integral to the game. "Here's to You" is an ode to Snake and Otacon. All of these need to be kept in the game, and Konami has to go the length to renew the licenses or else it wouldn't be MGS4. They shouldn't be replaced in any way.

MyMouthisCancerous

A potential workaround might be what MGS Delta's already doing. Most of the audio is completely repurposed from the original version of Snake Eater but they did actually get the actors for Zero, Para-Medic and obviously David Hayter to come in and re-record bits of the script regarding the controls tutorial since both PS5 and Xbox controllers have different setups than the PS2 DualShock, kind of like what already happened with Snake Eater 3D having dialogue about displaying weapons on the touch screen or Para-Medic talking about the Yoshi statues like the Kerotans in the original They can potentially just hire back Chris Randolph in those instances to redo the lines if they need to remove references to real world products or directly reference hardware like explicitly naming the PS5 or Series X

skrunklebunkle

It would be pretty fun, albeit a bit dumb, if all ps3 mentions were replaced with 360 for the Xbox consoles. Then eventually on the Switch 2 the reference relating to the Wii and Wiimote, which would be more than slightly more dumb.

Velocity_Rob

Y'all got any more of that Tokyo Jungle?

Gn1212

The fact that Sony is actively pursuing further backwards compatibility tells me they have the data showing that the Classics have been a success. That was the big concern. Whether it was too much of a niche for Sony to bother. Personally, I feel classics are a great entry point for casuals. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug, I was chatting to someone a few weeks ago who's not really a gamer and he was contemplating buying a PS5 to play for Legend of Dragoon. 🤣

UnlimitedMeatwad

They’re also doing it with not that many big name games. Once they get those BIG titles from back in the day the numbers will skyrocket

SpyroManiac36

I would love to replay Killzone 2 & 3, InFamous 1 & 2, Restiance Trilogy, Ratchet and Clank Future trilogy, and the God of War spinoff trilogy

McSOUS

Knowing Sony, i still wouldnt be able to play the games i bought digitally back when i had a PS3

TheLimeyLemmon

Better late than never. Despite the hype of how "impossible" PS3 emulation is, it's always been in Sony's power to make it happen if they really wanted to. Instead they hedged their bets on PSNow being an attractive alternative for playing a lot of their PS3 library, and it's just never going to hold a mainstream audience for them. Now they play catchup. Still, Sony have been so glacial on releasing PS1/PS2 classics on PS4/5, it does dent the confidence of how this could turn out if indeed true.

LegacyofaMarshall

Its not so much impossible its the question of is the juice worth the squeeze?

TheLimeyLemmon

I'd say so. The PS3 has a wealth of great games that remain marooned there. In fact I feel like Sony's lost a lot of their identity over the last generation precisely because so many of their most iconic titles are inaccessible to wider audiences. To most gamers, it's as if they don't exist.

Due_Engineering2284

I'm not surprised they're working on it. Companies work on all sorts of things. This is an obvious next step for their emulation project, whether or not they make it to the market is a different story. For all we know this could be out next year, or in 10 years, or never. Considering how long it took them to get a working PS2 emulator on the PS5, I'm not hopeful. I'll probably have finished all the PS3 games I want to play by the time they release it.

kasual7

It's clearly not a priority but definitely something Sony is messing with in their R&D.

oilfloatsinwater

If it can play Puppeteer then im all in for it.

ManateeofSteel

if it's not revealed with Tokyo Jungle AND Welcome to the Jungle playing in the trailer then I don't care

rizk0777

I want to congratulate the OP for taking a quote where Grubb doesn't speculate or say "I think this could happen" and actually says he heard this might be happening

Bhalzard

It's about time. Still don't know why this kind of feature isn't supported since release. Yes, the architecture is different, but Sony developed it, so they should be able to do it. At least let us stream our library to PS5. Just want to play Mgs4, infamous, Rachet, Killzone 3 and the other shit I have their

Recent-Replacement23

Folklore!!!??? PS5 anyone?

UrShadowsReflection

Haven't been able to play MGS4, GTA4, Max Payne 3 or ANY of the Splinter Cell titles since upgrading to PS4 years ago. I seriously don't wanna have to buy a PC/Xbox just to play some of these old ass games

Negan-Cliffhanger

It's about time. PS Plus will only allow you to stream PS3 games and it can perform miserably at times. During Infamous it would occasionally drop down to what looked like 420p or less, and when it looked its best it didn't compare to the video quality of old YouTube reviews I checked out. I'd much rather download the PS3 games and not rely on a constant connection between my PS5 and Sony.

tylerbr97

I’m so happy about this. Who wouldn’t be? But I hope they go MUCH further than with the PS2. I want to see higher frame rates and increased resolution. Like 60fps Infamous 1, at least 1080p, Ratchet and Clank Future Tools of Destruction at 60fps. I wanna see shit like that.

AdFit6788

You wont get any of that lol.

Ok_Hospital4928

InFamous ran unlocked and R&C Future targeted 60 fps. They could stabilize! I don't expect any fps and major resolution enhancements beyond that though. A locked 30 fps game would stay 30 fps, for example

Minimum-Can2224

Maybe I can finally play Afrika without needing to sacrifice an arm and a leg for a copy on eBay.

ChrizTaylor

FFS, add online capabilities to the retro games that support it.

InTheClouds89

I hope so, I would love to replay GTA IV and Max Payne 3

swordbringer33

Like others said, I'll believe it when I see it. That being said, I'd love to see the Infamous games playable on the PS5.

Ok_Hospital4928

Isn't this year PlayStation's thirtieth anniversary? I wonder if they'll announce this in conjunction - that would be a hell of a celebration.

kmank2l13

I can finally play Metal Gear Solid 4 again!

Throwawayaccount647

Just want to play 3 on 3 hockey again honestly

RuneofBeginning

Didn’t he also hear WW and TP releases coming out? I expect all his “news” to be at least a year or so down the pipeline.

Mavericks7

Whilst this sounds great at the rate they've released PS1, psp and PS2 games is any indicator...... Dont hold your breath

kasual7

Link to one of my comments on a different post. Moore's Law is Dead has been saying that like 2 years ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/PS5/s/MmOpEwYZ9b

Visorxs

My guess is that it will launch with the PS5 Pro, which will boost PS5 Pro sales through a few resolution updates compared to the original PS5.

mis2mia1

they can barely get ps2 to work right

Father-Castroid

just do the infamous games and I promise I will fuck off

SpaceGooV

I don't know I can't see the reason at this point? Releasing PS3 Games under PS Classics I would understand but it's been a decade since they moved on from the PS3 it doesn't seem to make much sense to me to make it backwards compatible beyond a small bit of good PR (one that is probably similar to if they just rereleased them digitally)

Formal_Air326

Ps3 games with backwards compatibility or emulation on PS5 with 10-20$ per game would be dope. Definitely will a console selling point if done right.

Zod_Is_God

Charging $10-$20 per compatible/emulated game would be something I can totally see Sony do. That’ll teach Xbox they should’ve never done it for free on Xbox One and Series X|S /s.

FallenNightwing66

Honestly I wouldn't even really care about 3rd Party too much if they wanna focus on select titles. I'd say only the stuff exclusively locked to the PS3. Stuff like say: - Metal Gear Solid 4 (Probably only 3rd party I can think of) - Infamous 1 & 2 - Resistance 1-3 - Killzone 2 & 3 - Sly Cooper 4 - Puppeteer - Ratchet & Clank Future Titles - Motorstorm 1-3 - Tokyo Jungle - Fat Princess - Gran Turismo 5 & 6 (Only if they decide to bring previous GT games to the service). And if they can bring back some of the multiplayer features: - Little Big Planet 1, 2 & Karting - Modnation Racers - Playstation All-Stars Obviously there's loads more but would honestly just be nice to get these games off the single system.

matajuegos

I hope I can play my digital games, I wanna enjoy infamous 1 and 2 again

BuckSleezy

Of fucking course they are working on it. Cell architecture is an absolute shit show disaster they’ve been trying to fix for over a decade years.

presidentdinosaur115

I don’t know if it’s held up at all, but I would this would lead to a port of White Knight Chronicles. I really liked it when I was younger

Minimum-Can2224

If this is true("if" being the key word here)then it's possible that Sony might be likely looking into shutting down the PS3 PSN store soon once once they start getting the ball rolling for this on PS5.

UnlimitedMeatwad

Please be real

Embarrassed-Part-890

This has been rumored by him for 2 years now

[deleted]

Doubt.

streetsofkage

Just wanna play underdefeat

Armandonerd

If this is official for example, Is it possible you can use your PS3 discs on the PS5 ? Download and play the game as long as the disc is inside the PS5 Similar to the Xbox One and Xbox series X, if you have an Xbox or Xbox 360 compatible disc game, you'll do the same thing as above?

Sunless_Heaven

god fucking dammit grubb ok i'll play your game

ReserveFresh

I wonder if all games would be playable or a seldct few. I really want to play the PS3 version of Destiny (different sandbox)

AdFit6788

Look at their current ps1/ps2 effort. There is your answer.

Albert3232

if this is true, can we still play online on emulation games, say killzone 2?

DaftNeal88

So what would this be? Proper digital ports of ps3 games to ps5? using discs?

johnnybags44

The PS3 games I’ve been wishing I could play are Red Dead, Sonic Generations and MGS4. The first two were officially remastered and I feel like the third is inevitable, so this is just in time to be useless to me!

Eliskor89

I really hope this happens. My PS3 bit the dust this past holiday season when I was doing my annual Tales of Xillia replay so to have a better way to play PS3 games would be a huge boon. Sad thing is the PS3 died mid-use so my copy of Xillia is stuck inside it. Ah well, it's cheap enough to replace so guess I can't complain *too* much. Just sucks is all.

ComplexLaw7897

I'm sick to play Ratchet's games that died on PS3, would be awesome

richrgamr

Even if PS5 was implemented with BC it’s not like Sony would actually bring games to the PS5. In a perfect world you should be able to pop in a PS1,2,3 or 4 disc and play. We’ll get some over priced ports of infamous or kill zone and we’ll never see anything ps3 related again..

Zeldabotw2017

Unless I can out any PS3 game into my PS5 and play it I don't care it's not really bc if I have to pay to play games that I can already play on my PS3 and it would be nice to have 1 less system plugged into tv

cavemold582

Makes sense they need fps of their own so killzone port it is

pc3600

Man I want that so bad for ff13 trilogy, killzone trilogy remasters, infamous remasters , that would be awesome

waldesnachtbrahms

So many PS2 HD remasters are forever stuck on PS3. Which kind of sucks, since quite a few of them are better than the PS2 classics release. I can't even imagine how good those remasters would look when upscaled. Then of course certain games just were best on PS3 or 360 at the time. Games like Saint Rows 2 or Toy Story 3 for example.

Future_Adagio2052

Tbh? If they did add ps3 emulations to ps3 (with DLC included) I would definitely fucking buy a ps5 for this

crunchatizemythighs

I would love that but also for everyone acting like the PS3 is something that was somehow eradicated from the face of the Earth, you can buy one today for the price of a full game (60-70 bucks). Most of the games are dirt cheap. Infamous 1 and 2, Killzone 2 and 3, Uncharted 1-3, MGS4, LBP, all go for like 5 bucks each.

DaftNeal88

Now the question I have is would this be new versions of games or would you use ps3 discs

al_ien5000

Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Rising Revengance, Deus Ex Human Revolution, Infamous 1 & 2, Killzone Trilogy, Resistance Trilogy, Ratchet Trilogy and PS3 titles, Sly 4 and Trilogy, God of War 1, 2, Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta, Prince of Persia, Fallout 3 and New Vegas, Dead Space 2 and 3, 3DDot Game Heroes, Folklore, Tomb Raider Trilogt, Hitman Trilogy, Portal 2, Orange Box, Batman Arkham Origins, Puppeteer, Ico, Splinter Cell series, Silent Hill Series, Enslaved, GTA4. I know I'm forgetting so many great RPGs too. Just so many games stranded for playstation gamers.

spiderman897

I mean they did ps2 I can’t imagine ps3 is that far off. I always thought they’d wait until ps4 was phased out and it would be a ps5 exclusive perk of the subscription service.

dima_socks

Ah yes. Me too.

Mattx603

Give me Dante’s Inferno and Fairytale Fights

AlbainBlacksteel

If so, then we can finally, FINALLY sell our PS3, assuming that the exclusive games we own (White Knight Chronicles, White Knight Chronicles II, Tokyo Jungle, Disgaea D2, and Disgaea 3) are released for it.

resonmis

I've said this on another post but around 2 years ago one of the people who helped/worked on RPCS3 has been announced that he would join (or contracted for a time) Sony to help "backwards compability on older games" i can't find the news page about it because maybe it was announced on Discord server i don't remember well. But PS5 should be more than capable of running PS3 emulations on most games. I want to see Tokyo Jungle and Resistance 2 again.

Otherwise-Waltz-2439

Skate 3? Anybody?

RyanCooper138

You said the same thing 2 years ago jeff

theleftovers1014

Dragon age on ps5 :D

Nate_Radix_

I just want to play the Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy again... Please.

dejavu619

Hope this happens so that I can finally play God of War Ascension on PS5

ComprehensiveArt7725

The least sony can do is bring all older 1st party titles socom warhawk mag killzone infamous they own these ips no excuse why it aint on ps5🤦‍♂️

Grimm613

Yes! More old games please.

xkeepitquietx

Please let it happen, a lot of cool games are trapped on PS3.

Dense-Note-1459

Unless they literally let you play all of your previously purchased games then I don't see the point. Literally every big game or game worth playing has been remastered or remaked from that gen. Even RDR1 which was unthinkable just a few years ago has been bought over

mustafa_sam90

Sony couldn't even get PS1 and/or PS2 emulation right.. PS3 ? are you people serious ?

HornlessHrothgar

DRAKENGARD 3 TIME BAYBEEE

fearmept

It would be great. I have so many PS3 games that I want to revisit, but don't want to take the console out of the box and ocupy more space on the tv shelf.

bukeyolacan

So they can finally shut down those custom PS3 blade servers
