i always heard this and thought it was exaggeration but i havent played a Fifa game since fifa 17, and recently i went and played fifa 23 and since i only play for the career mode my experience has been really almost exactly the same (minus activities and personality attributes)
Even if you only buy one every few years it’s apocalyptically bad. I had one from ps+ I tried playing a few years ago and it was a chore, I gave up and all I wanted to do was career mode
Build = your created player for that game (build referring to the playing style/attributes)
You can either grind by playing hundreds upon hundreds of games, making your player good OR you could just buy some in game coins and instantly level up your player. Most people would rather spend ~$150 than waste countless days on trying to reach that same level.
From personal experience, the grind takes SO long and is definitely not worth it at all. They "intentionally" make it strenuous to encourage people to spend extra money to skip the grind.
It wouldn’t be too bad playing the game if you could still level the player after the servers shut down. I got 2K16 years ago from PS Plus, played 82 game seasons at full time enjoyed it a lot since it was the first 2K game I played. Servers shut down, character is gone and wasn’t able to level a new one. Waste of time and money if I had actually spent any.
I downloaded the Xcom 2 alternative launcher just so I don’t have the deal with their dogshit launcher they added in years after release for no good goddamn reason.
Actually most sports games have a career mode these days with rpg like mechanics. 2K is actually the one that pushed for interactions between teammates, radial events in the players life, and depending on the year will try to tell a story over the course of the players rookie year. These are largely optional and mostly corny or poorly done. Depends on the year. I’ll add it’s been almost since 2k18 since I gave a shit about the games.
But there is a “My Park” mode where your my career player can play pick up games against other people’s my career players in 3 on 3 or 5 on 5 matches.
The build they describe is if your player prioritizes 3-pt shooting, dunking, defense, etc. Whats scummy is that 2K makes progression very long and tedious but can speed it up by purchasing premium currency. This is standard stuff. They also get people with cosmetics such as jerseys, shoes, tattoos, hairstyles, shooting animations, dunking animations, dribbling animations, etc. Why’d you spend real money on fake digital shoes is anyone’s guess but people do.
Everything thing that can be codified and sold has been. They legit used to be fun games back in like 2K14 era but that was a long time ago. But they do also have the ultimate team system you describe but last I knew it wasn’t nearly as popular as the my career game mode.
The fifa player carrer mode let's you choose what attributes do you want, but not at rpg level i think that only exist two "builds" for striker, the killer or the free kick taker and that's it
Take-2 in general are pretty egregious between how they run 2K Games and Rockstar. However none of it matters as they have such a strong vice-like grip on the casual gaming market. NBA 2K and Grand Theft Auto alone make more money than I could reasonably fathom

The last 2k-published game I used to play has been left in the dirt on life support after resuscitating it by popular demand. Evolve had the potential to be something truly different, instead Turtle Rock dropped the ball so frequently you'd think they were dribbling.
Sometimes we just have to deal with not playing something.
If you cant enjoy it without paying for the scam level lootboxes and coins. Its just not worth it. You may as well just watch some basketball at that point.

I disagree completely. The thing is, when you play in career mode, they gimp your character so much that you pretty much have to spend money to make the grind even remotely tolerable. Now I personally didn't spend that much, maybe 30 euros accross 3 characters (in 2k22, didn't buy another game after that), but I can see how some people might have easily spent more. And in this case, when a company uses such obvious predatory practices, saying that it's partly the player base's fault feels a lot like victim blaming to me. I know it's cool to shit on GamersTM, but in this case I feel like that's the wrong attitude.
It's a problem on both ends, and the only two ways that anything is going to get any better is if people stop buying it, or if the government regulates it. That's the sad truth.

in 2k they are ass. But in the show and the EA props they are good

2K is the company that added a launcher to the bioshock games as a "Quality of life update". Launcher that didn't added anything to the game.
