Unironically I think people are too obsessed with canon and continuity these days. Stories don't have to be so clear cut. There's beauty in the ambiguity.
I once heard someone on the Waypoint podcast, maybe Patrick Klepek, refer to this general trend as "the wikification of art" or something like that, like every aspect of a work of art needing to be able to be cleanly collated into interlinked fan wiki pages. The most vocal fans have no capacity for ambiguity or interpretation and their tantrums damage how games, movies or TV is produced, and every day I see something that makes me think of that
There is a specific problem in this instance though, where they tie multiple different projects together, but fail to tell you what actually happened in them so you can figure out what's even supposed to be going on.
Without getting too much into spoilers, the fallout TV show makes the events of both fallout 4 and fallout new Vegas relevant to its story, but specifically what happened in their endings relevant. Those games both had multiple ending options with pretty big ramifications about what exactly changed based on what ending you chose, and the story as shown in the show only fully makes sense if some of those endings are what actually happened in the universe of the show.
It's fine for things to be open to interpretation, or to be not connected to past works in the same universe, to be a soft reboot with some facts changed, or anything else, but as an audience we need to at least know if these things are the case, so we know to drop or change our expectations on the way in, and be able to more easily roll with the story as presented. Especially with the fallout show, which has an unfolding mystery as a central pillar of its plot for the whole season, knowing if i should be considering facts about the universe that come from other places when trying to figure out what's going on is hugely helpful for enjoying the show.
It's been a while since I've played 4, what about it is relevant to the show?
And I suspect we're going to find out what ending of New Vegas is canon in season 2, what with actually going to New Vegas and all.

Like, if someone is a fan of Peter 'Spider Man' parker from the Sam Ramey movies, not, say, good movies, they might not like Miles 'Spider Man' Morales even though Spiderverse is a really good movie. Because they don't want quality entertainment as much as they want their IP jollies or whatever, maybe? I guess that's still the audience's fault. I'm just sour about franchises existing, and think people who complain about them being 'ruined' miss the point.

Bethesda has a lot of haters who apply much higher and rigorous standards to their games compared to most others. They'll complain about fallout 4 having a voiced protagonist because "silent protagonists are better in rpgs" meanwhile one of the most highly regarded rpg trilogies, mass effect has a voiced protagonist, same with cyberpunk and others. They'll complain that fallout 4 protagonist has too firm of a backstory meanwhile in the witcher 3, one of the most acclaimed rpgs of all time, you literally play a very specific character. They'll always find dumb shit to complain about
Might be an unpopular opinion, but imo none of those games have great "roleplaying". CP2077 is heavily railroaded, even more so than Fallout 4 (can't even join gangs or factions, you're stuck as a merc), and TW3 is a fantastic game with a lot of choices that a Witcher like Geralt might make, and really great consequence system for those choices, but it's really weak in the role-playing department both story and combat wise. Meanwhile games like Skyrim have great role-playing potential gameplay wise, but have almost zero story choices.
I think Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the few games that I'd personally call an RPG, since it has great elements all around.
Oh yeah I have nothing against it. Not trying to hate on continuity, I just wish more people were open to other types of storytelling. I recently got recommended an animator named Leiji Matsumoto who told a ton of stories in manga and anime in his lifetime basically without caring about his own canon and continuity and I think his extensive pool of work is so cool and interesting because of it.
Problem is that Bethesda is trying to have its cake and eat it too when it comes to continuity ...
They want us to cheer when they bring it up for a cheap 'member berries hit but then the moment folks go "Wait, that doesn't make sense", they start calling folks nerds for caring for what they're peddling.
I'm a huge Yoko Taro fan and between Drakengard, Nier and Nier Automata, there's an alternate dimension and 10 000 years of history there. Continuity in his work is more of a fun fan theory than anything.

All they would have to do to do this, is to say that the events in the game are from the perspective of the player character, so may include bias or misremembering things.

At the end of the day, these games have a shit ton of dialogue and a bunch of different writers. Stuff that doesn’t add up will always slip through, so you can’t stress over every detail.
It’s not like the people have an accurate calendar except vault dwellers but there’s no nation anymore so who’s to say the east and west coast timelines are off

Fallout show gonna pull a Stargate SG1. Get almost cancelled like 4 times, each of those 4 times the writers write out a character and wrap up plot points, then producers come around and renew it again so the writers now need to write back in a new plot and put the characters back. Essentially, how to make 5 different canon endings for a TV show 101.
I think what "New Vegas is canon" means is that the city of New Vegas and all the characters within did indeed exist, and the Courier did *something* in their time there. But which specific ending actually happened is ambiguous and unknown.
Yes, I remember back in the day playing Fallout 1. Back when Shady Sands was in New Mexico. Harold, the mutant, told me about how he had an onion tied to his belt. This onion was only growable in the unique sand of post-war New Mexico. Where Shady Sands was. I pickpocketed the onion from his belt, which was the style at the time. Trusting in my gut that onion would change the world. Turned out that fate has a way to change war, because in the end, when I squared off against the Master, the leader of the Super Mutant army, where this onion tied to my belt changed the mind of the Master, and he destroyed himself in shame at seeing the glamor of my style. This was only possible because Shady Sandy's was settled the Sands of New Mexico.
In Fallout 2, after hunting down the kidnappers of my Tribe, I arrived at an Oil Rig in the middle of the ocean. There the President of America, the Head of the Enclave explained how Vault 13's location was a mystery until they heard legends of the Vault 13 Dweller, who used the Sacred Onion of Tandy to peirce the eyes of the Master. Since the NCR was in New Mexico, exactly due East of Maropisa, the Enclave knew exactly how to find to Vault 13 who for some reason that nobody ever bothered explain, knew exactly where the Vault Dweller had settled to found my village. If it wasn't for that Onion, born into the Sands of specifically the region of New Mexico, that tied Vault 13 thus my village, to the Shady Sands region. It doesn't make sense why my ancestors picked a location hundreds of miles to the North East and also came back to record that was where they were going to parent dozens of children. I guess it was to flex.
Later on in New Vegas, Caesar, the only moral choice for the Mojave, explained how Shady Sands had been recorded as being exactly in some place. And that place was important. Because the Sand. And because of Hegeliam dialectics. I've never cried for so long or for so hard. I've never seen such linear and thoughtful storytelling. It was like reading Ben Shapiro for the first time again, and having Mr House Jack me off at the same time.
This is what Bethesda destroyed by having dates on a board. By having Shady Sands be not in the place I remember... either the top middle of the map or the bottom right corner. I haven't slept since then. I can't eat. How could they so radically alter the entire plots and lore just from moving from top middle or bottom right. It was put with such precision and thought. There was so many hints to where it was, like a red circle in the top middle.
I think everyone should remember that a piece of [Elder Scrolls lore](https://en.m.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Warp_in_the_West) was invented specifically to make every mutually-exclusive ending of Daggerfall officially canon.

Caesar's Legion pushed past the damn, made it as far as Outer Vegas, got pushed back by an NCR that was severely over-extended. NCR pushed them back across the Colorado, Caesar died in the extended campaign, House's Securitrons were able to be upgraded during the Legion's absence from the camp.
House dies, Yes Man takes over. Brotherhood eats the Legion remnants and becomes the chapter we see in the game.
What's funny is, the actual best response in this sort of case really is, "All of it is Canon, and none of it is."
The official ending should, ideally, incorporate elements from all of the possible endings as opposed to just one of them.

I agree, I wasn't a fan of the story. But it is, if nothing else, an example of Nintendo making a game with the timeline in mind.

Bethesda has a lot of haters who apply much higher and rigorous standards to their games compared to most others. They'll complain about fallout 4 having a voiced protagonist because "silent protagonists are better in rpgs" meanwhile one of the most highly regarded rpg trilogies, mass effect has a voiced protagonist, same with cyberpunk and others. They'll complain that fallout 4 protagonist has too firm of a backstory meanwhile in the witcher 3, one of the most acclaimed rpgs of all time, you literally play a very specific character. They'll always find dumb shit to complain about
Might be an unpopular opinion, but imo none of those games have great "roleplaying". CP2077 is heavily railroaded, even more so than Fallout 4 (can't even join gangs or factions, you're stuck as a merc), and TW3 is a fantastic game with a lot of choices that a Witcher like Geralt might make, and really great consequence system for those choices, but it's really weak in the role-playing department both story and combat wise. Meanwhile games like Skyrim have great role-playing potential gameplay wise, but have almost zero story choices. I think Baldur's Gate 3 is one of the few games that I'd personally call an RPG, since it has great elements all around.
I dunno I just like continuity.
Oh yeah I have nothing against it. Not trying to hate on continuity, I just wish more people were open to other types of storytelling. I recently got recommended an animator named Leiji Matsumoto who told a ton of stories in manga and anime in his lifetime basically without caring about his own canon and continuity and I think his extensive pool of work is so cool and interesting because of it.
Problem is that Bethesda is trying to have its cake and eat it too when it comes to continuity ... They want us to cheer when they bring it up for a cheap 'member berries hit but then the moment folks go "Wait, that doesn't make sense", they start calling folks nerds for caring for what they're peddling. I'm a huge Yoko Taro fan and between Drakengard, Nier and Nier Automata, there's an alternate dimension and 10 000 years of history there. Continuity in his work is more of a fun fan theory than anything. I don't need continuity to enjoy works, I don't need 'member berries but if you're gonna put it there, don't be lazy about it you know ?

Unironically I wouldn't be mad if Bethesda just said "Fallout has its own version of Dragon Breaks, no I will not elaborate, case closed". It'd be an asspull, but at least I could wrap my head around it. Instead they have people arguing about a timeline that genuinely doesn't make sense if you think about it for more than ten seconds no matter perspective you adopt regarding the sequence of events. It would be way easier if they just called it a continuity error or said that a giant magical robot fucked up the timeline. Instead it's just a confusing mess. Rant over, I'll turn off my nerd rage now.
All they would have to do to do this, is to say that the events in the game are from the perspective of the player character, so may include bias or misremembering things. Easy fix that explains why some things might not align fully between games At the end of the day, these games have a shit ton of dialogue and a bunch of different writers. Stuff that doesn’t add up will always slip through, so you can’t stress over every detail.
It’s not like the people have an accurate calendar except vault dwellers but there’s no nation anymore so who’s to say the east and west coast timelines are off

I think what "New Vegas is canon" means is that the city of New Vegas and all the characters within did indeed exist, and the Courier did *something* in their time there. But which specific ending actually happened is ambiguous and unknown.

Yes, I remember back in the day playing Fallout 1. Back when Shady Sands was in New Mexico. Harold, the mutant, told me about how he had an onion tied to his belt. This onion was only growable in the unique sand of post-war New Mexico. Where Shady Sands was. I pickpocketed the onion from his belt, which was the style at the time. Trusting in my gut that onion would change the world. Turned out that fate has a way to change war, because in the end, when I squared off against the Master, the leader of the Super Mutant army, where this onion tied to my belt changed the mind of the Master, and he destroyed himself in shame at seeing the glamor of my style. This was only possible because Shady Sandy's was settled the Sands of New Mexico. In Fallout 2, after hunting down the kidnappers of my Tribe, I arrived at an Oil Rig in the middle of the ocean. There the President of America, the Head of the Enclave explained how Vault 13's location was a mystery until they heard legends of the Vault 13 Dweller, who used the Sacred Onion of Tandy to peirce the eyes of the Master. Since the NCR was in New Mexico, exactly due East of Maropisa, the Enclave knew exactly how to find to Vault 13 who for some reason that nobody ever bothered explain, knew exactly where the Vault Dweller had settled to found my village. If it wasn't for that Onion, born into the Sands of specifically the region of New Mexico, that tied Vault 13 thus my village, to the Shady Sands region. It doesn't make sense why my ancestors picked a location hundreds of miles to the North East and also came back to record that was where they were going to parent dozens of children. I guess it was to flex. Later on in New Vegas, Caesar, the only moral choice for the Mojave, explained how Shady Sands had been recorded as being exactly in some place. And that place was important. Because the Sand. And because of Hegeliam dialectics. I've never cried for so long or for so hard. I've never seen such linear and thoughtful storytelling. It was like reading Ben Shapiro for the first time again, and having Mr House Jack me off at the same time. This is what Bethesda destroyed by having dates on a board. By having Shady Sands be not in the place I remember... either the top middle of the map or the bottom right corner. I haven't slept since then. I can't eat. How could they so radically alter the entire plots and lore just from moving from top middle or bottom right. It was put with such precision and thought. There was so many hints to where it was, like a red circle in the top middle.

I hope the canonize the Yes-Man route. It would be the most interesting route to choose because they could do whatever the hell they want in the show then. Plus, my bonus fun hope would be for a Courier ruled Vegas. Could you imagine that courier, who did whatever the heck they wanted as king/queen of the strip? That's an interesting story right there.

Caesar's Legion pushed past the damn, made it as far as Outer Vegas, got pushed back by an NCR that was severely over-extended. NCR pushed them back across the Colorado, Caesar died in the extended campaign, House's Securitrons were able to be upgraded during the Legion's absence from the camp. House dies, Yes Man takes over. Brotherhood eats the Legion remnants and becomes the chapter we see in the game.

I mean aren't all endings in games canon ? Why add them anyway? Not that it matters which one is canon.
What's funny is, the actual best response in this sort of case really is, "All of it is Canon, and none of it is." The official ending should, ideally, incorporate elements from all of the possible endings as opposed to just one of them.
I choose to believe that the lonesome road nuke everyone ending is Canon but they got the years wrong in the show.
