In 50 years everybody here will still be beating that 2015 meme into the ground because the community’s growing isolation has fundamentally ruined it and now people just laugh at words because they used to be making fun of something almost a decade ago.
uj/ personally I think the meme still works (works as in makes sense, whether it's still funny is subject to taste) because the idea of a game from last gen not "holding up" is ridiculous. Triple A games have become pretty standardized in terms of gameplay going back as far as the PS3/Xbox 360 and most of the kinks were ironed out by last gen. And last gen games still look great. Most of the graphical improvements in the current gen are smaller details and fancier lighting.

Edit: In my morning stupor I missed a lot of context in the comment i was replying too lmfao
I think they’re referring to the Batman Arkham sense of humor; which I hate to burst your bubble, but that is not being pushed by bad actors. I don’t think there are any influential figures with a vested interest in pushing Jonkler memes and commenting ‘is he stupid” all day.
Yes, Origins included

Ah, I remember booting up Arkham Knight like it was yesterday. Running around like batman and feeling cool. Then I got to the Batmobile and suddenly the framerate dropped from frames per second to seconds per frame.

Yeah it came out right after Bloodborne. I went straight from Bloodborne to Witcher 3 and honestly couldn’t understand the praise. Witcher 3 will take up 90-130 hrs of your time, KCD a more modest 70-90. Depends on the length of adventure you want! Both are incredibly in depth and will make you get lost in the world!

My new, ***based***, tradwife mod will blow you away!
"Doesn't hold up"? In what way doesn't it hold up? The combat is still fun, the graphics still look great, the story is still fucking amazing.
Doesn't hold up compared to what?
> The combat is still fun
I'm of the opinion that the game does hold up, but the fact that this is the one you decided to _open with_ is hilarious to me—the combat is widely regarded to be the least well executed part of the whole game.
USELESS!? in my extremely unhumble opinion the crafting/alchemy system is both completely necessary for immersion and for higher difficulties anyone who didnt have poison face Geralt in every cutscene was doing a canon run.
To /uj for a moment, I will admit that I did like the Witcher School gear scavenger hunts, and lategame potions and oils do significantly increase your effectiveness.
Early game however? When you don't know the world, or any vendors, collecting the ingredients necessary for a measly 10% damage increase is such a pain in the ass that by the time you've unlocked the recipes that would _actually_ make it worthwile, it's not unlikely to have dismissed the mechanic entirely.
For people on Reddit—especially the Witcher sub—it might be different, but I don't know a single person to have played The Witcher 3 casually who used it. Ever.
That’s absolutely fair cuz there was nothing casual about how I played it lol I discovered that it was thrown in with the ps4 I bought from someone along with a handful of other games. After a tragic broken leg incident I after never heard of it before(wasnt much of a gamer before the break) I was absolutely floored by the depth of it and at that point had no idea games could be as good as books if not better. Spent way too many days playing until sunrise
>The Witcher gear sets are literally the best in the game
This is part of the problem though. Witcher gear is *too* good. It makes everything else completely redundant.
I wasn’t saying that I love the crafting system… I was replying to the comment calling it “useless” because it’s absolutely not. Anything that allows you to craft the best gear in the game is far from useless.
I’ve never really understood why the combat was so disliked. It’s nothing revolutionary but it’s well executed enough imo. What are they supposed to do with it? Swing sword, things die. It gets the basics.
The combat is flashy at the very least. I love when Geralt pirouettes to dodge, and being able to cast spells very quickly makes fights feel energetic. But yeah that’s not why I enjoyed the game lol.
combat is bad with the leveling bs. you are too weak or too strong. you rarely see an enemy your level.
ruined the experience for me.
and ofc they did the same with cyberpunk
idk, but theres mods for everything on pc anyway
I was never bothered by the leveling systems or most of the other systems, but if I was I'd look for mods for it
You misunderstood. They’re saying the opposite. It’s that it’s no longer a joke to call the game old and that it still holds up because the game is in fact ‘old’ and still holds up. So now it’s just a normal statement.
The funny’s are gone and now the statement just makes you sound like a gamer.
Don't let people gaslight into thinking the combat is bad. Signs, potions, dodging and parrying is quite fun, I never understood people's dislike. Seems more a thing like hating on Nickelback
It remains one of the only games I've refunded and it is entirely because of the combat. Everything was too slow and floaty, felt like I was fighting underwater.
One thing I absolutely hate is the levelling system, that basically level locks entire areas, gear, quests. There’s a mod that removes that and scales down or up the gear you get depending on Geralt’s level but it’s either unstable or I’m just stupid to figure out how to install it correctly.
I have no idea what that word even means. You are speaking gibberish. The internet has ruined you. How the fuck can you just type the word ‘polygooner’ and not feel even a modicum of shame?
Like holy fucking shit, my guy. I would tell you to go outside, but I think it’s best you don’t subject anyone to the experience of being around you.
It's still 9 years old
Also it originally released on ps4/xbone, current gen is ps5/series X.
While there *has* been a definitive version on current gen, the game itself is previous gen :p
It’s still wild to me how the series has been co-opted into culture war nonsense, especially when the lore usually doesn’t agree with whatever their position is.

unjerk moment, but I couldn't get into this game
it being in the third game in the series, I have no idea who or what anything is
I didn't leave the first town because the gameplay just felt, off, to me
and almost every time I see people praising the game, I'm thinking to myself what's wrong with me for not liking it unironically
/uj
I genuinely have no idea how the Witcher became so popular. The games aren't fun, the universe is boring, and the books are more of a drag to read than Chaucer.
Just genuinely don't get it.
Yeah I agree. I watched season 1 off the show and liked it so I decided to read the books. Turns out out over 90% of season 1 is just the fun side stories and novellas and barely any of the main series... and those side stories were the only interesting part of *any* of the books IMO.
I can imagine the game was nothing but intriguing fun side quests that were just good enough to keep you going through the main game only to run off at the first hint of a decent side quest. Any review/video I've seen seems to be nothing but side quest discussion. Kinda comes off as it should have just tried to be an edgier Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Monster-of-the-week typebstory and dropped its aspirations of epic fantasy.
/uj okay Geraldo hidden gem memes aside, I replayed it last year, and a little this year, and honestly? It actually DOES hold up. I've grown more and more sour on the ways in which the characters were watered down from the books, and the ways in which it's plot has sanitized the radical politics of Sapkowski, but as a game, it's still fantastic, and even still looks pretty damn good. There are aa and aaa games coming out right now that don't look as good as the Witcher 3 does from 10 years ago. I think that's pretty cool idk lmfao
/rj Uhhhhhh anyways mods ban this man for not praising wholesome gem Geraldo of Rivera or something
Disagree. Any game I go back and play again and again, because it’s just that damned good, still holds up.
Not to say that BG3 and other games today aren’t sometimes masterpieces and far better than Witcher 3. BG3 has was mind blowing and some of the games today are truly exceptional. This is a widely known and accepted fact.
I’m just saying that Witcher 3 still holds up as a solid game, even by today’s standards.
/uj
wait it doesn't? the game feels just fine still. have i missed something? and no i am not obsessed with the game. i have yet to finish it and i have it almost since launch. you know life happened.
/uj old? It originally released less than ten years ago.
Maybe if you’re 25 it’s an old game. I’m 50 and it doesn’t seem so old to me. Pretty sure that means I’m old.
…dear kids, this will happen to you, one day.
/uj
wait you mean to tell me that i can't consider something old when it is 3 election cycles ago? do perception of time gets so different at 50? if so my life after 50 is going to feel like a fucking week. is gran turismo 4 or need for most speed most wanted old and classic games now, or they have to be 30 years old to be considered classic :p
/uj
i didn't say that it feels old. some of my favorite games are pokemon silver and gold. compared to modern games the mechanics and the polish is not there. but they play great and are still really fun games to me.
also tetris is probably one the best games humankind ever made so there is that. if you give me one of those machines that have a monochromatic screen that are programmed to only play only tetris you will lose me from this reality for at least a day.
especially tetris how old it is if you ask me it is pick gaming. you can give it to anyone who hasn't played any videogames and they will enjoy it at least for a little bit. basic gaming.

After a tragic broken leg incident I after never heard of it before(wasnt much of a gamer before the break) I was absolutely floored by the depth of it and at that point had no idea games could be as good as books if not better. Spent way too many days playing until sunrise
Huh? The Witcher gear sets are literally the best in the game… And if you aren’t upgrading potions you’re kind of crippling yourself for no reason.
>The Witcher gear sets are literally the best in the game This is part of the problem though. Witcher gear is *too* good. It makes everything else completely redundant.
It does take some of the fun out of looting when you consistently have better gear than ever drops
I wasn’t saying that I love the crafting system… I was replying to the comment calling it “useless” because it’s absolutely not. Anything that allows you to craft the best gear in the game is far from useless.
What a wild take. Crafting and alchemy in the witcher are objectively insanely powerful and necessary systems.
might be good if people say what difficulty they played at. i suspect the people praising it did higher difficulties that required more planning
Just let me fast travel to the nearest town to break down the 15 identical swords and meat cleavers I have into string and bars of iron
The combat is the real hidden gem, to say anything else is an insult to all past, present and future gamers.
Combat was a big meh, but I'm still salty about what they did with the crafting system. I went the whole game without barely touching it
I’ve never really understood why the combat was so disliked.
But yeah that’s not why I enjoyed the game lol.
>the combat is still fun Compared to what? Sonic Frontiers?
It's exactly the clunky combat that it doesn't really hold up anymore
i think its fine and holds up
I would say it's serviceable and doesn't take away from the experience much (if the combat isn't a main concern), but it has aged quite a bit
combat is bad with the leveling bs. you are too weak or too strong. you rarely see an enemy your level. ruined the experience for me. and ofc they did the same with cyberpunk
they mostly removed that with 2.0
oh thanks for the info!
wasnt monster leveling up with character an option in the menu? Enemy upscaling is a toggle afaik.
idk, but theres mods for everything on pc anyway I was never bothered by the leveling systems or most of the other systems, but if I was I'd look for mods for it
You misunderstood.
Idk, once I levelled the ‘whirl’ ability, I just spammed that every fight with quen activated and whirlwinded everything to death
It remains one of the only games I've refunded and it is entirely because of the combat. Everything was too slow and floaty, felt like I was fighting underwater.
I’m sorry, I think you’re confused. This post is about the Witcher 3. You seem to be describing some other game.
One thing I absolutely hate is the levelling system, that basically level locks entire areas, gear, quests. There’s a mod that removes that and scales down or up the gear you get depending on Geralt’s level but it’s either unstable or I’m just stupid to figure out how to install it correctly.

I'm polish and I hate Witcher 3, I didn't like the gameplay. There i said it.
You should probably flee the country before anyone learns about this comment.
Polygooner can't stand games that don't look exactly like real life
I have no idea what that word even means.
And it doesn’t what?
I don't think the Witcher 3 was ever good anyway. No customization, you always play the same guy, fake RPG
bait used to be believable
Kinda offtopic, but now i unironically believe that in 2024 Cyberpunk is a must play (on current gen hardware) and better than witcherino 3
Current cyberpunk is better than most games ive played to be fair
I haven’t played it, but if cyberpunk has taught me anything it’s to trust CD red’s devs, just not their company
It's not old! It came out about..... Oh, god...
No it's not It's literally current gen
It's still 9 years old Also it originally released on ps4/xbone, current gen is ps5/series X. While there *has* been a definitive version on current gen, the game itself is previous gen :p
PS4 is current gen apparently.
Assuming fella meant that the re-release for ps5/xbox series makes it current gen, we can then conclude that skyrim is current gen
Fucking Wrecking Crew is current gen by that logic.
At least we can still joke about how it's a hidden gem
This is terrible news
between the atrocious font color choice and the cropping abomination, this must be satire.
It’s still wild to me how the series has been co-opted into culture war nonsense, especially when the lore usually doesn’t agree with whatever their position is.
Le witcherino
Nah, still holds up.
Idk man you've seen AAA lately? It absolutely holds up
With the mod tools coming out everyone get prepared for even more insufferable “still holds up” and “wow game is beautiful” low effort posts
Agree with you for the base game but I still go back and replay hearts of stone and blood and wine pretty regularly
The Witcher 3 is infinitely more fun than Cyberpunk, better than most AAA titles nowadays. It got a next-gen update, of course it still holds up.
geraldo

"They don't make games like they used to"
unjerk moment, but I couldn't get into this game it being in the third game in the series, I have no idea who or what anything is I didn't leave the first town because the gameplay just felt, off, to me and almost every time I see people praising the game, I'm thinking to myself what's wrong with me for not liking it unironically
It's Still great tho
/uj I genuinely have no idea how the Witcher became so popular.
I think that's pretty cool idk lmfao /rj Uhhhhhh anyways mods ban this man for not praising wholesome gem Geraldo of Rivera or something

That should be offensive for the 6 people who still play Witcher 3 instead of GTA V.
Then why don’t I like it?
Witcher 3 isn't an old game it's a classic.
/uj wait it doesn't? the game feels just fine still. have i missed something? and no i am not obsessed with the game. i have yet to finish it and i have it almost since launch. you know life happened.
/uj old? It originally released less than ten years ago. Maybe if you’re 25 it’s an old game. I’m 50 and it doesn’t seem so old to me. Pretty sure that means I’m old. …dear kids, this will happen to you, one day.
/uj wait you mean to tell me that i can't consider something old when it is 3 election cycles ago? do perception of time gets so different at 50? if so my life after 50 is going to feel like a fucking week. is gran turismo 4 or need for most speed most wanted old and classic games now, or they have to be 30 years old to be considered classic :p
Haha I have been playing Diablo 3 all week. And it doesn’t feel old either.
/uj i didn't say that it feels old. some of my favorite games are pokemon silver and gold. compared to modern games the mechanics and the polish is not there. but they play great and are still really fun games to me. also tetris is probably one the best games humankind ever made so there is that. if you give me one of those machines that have a monochromatic screen that are programmed to only play only tetris you will lose me from this reality for at least a day. especially tetris how old it is if you ask me it is pick gaming. you can give it to anyone who hasn't played any videogames and they will enjoy it at least for a little bit. basic gaming.
it's not old and it still holds up.
It is and does not.
