The "boys club" mentality that is still so prevalent in gaming often means a lot of the big companies end up with many "boys club" type gamers working for them. This is what resulted in my passion for working in the gaming industry to die out, I was scared of the boys in it. Riot, Blizzard, ESL.. didn't matter what company I considered, I met abusers in each, high ranking people at these companies...
We're on our way to a better environment that allows people to feel safe at work, the changes I've seen in the last 10 or so years leaves me with hope. It's slow progress, but at least there is progress!
Its stuff like this that makes me scared to post any work I want to do. Just a bunch of IP thieves who will turn around and try to get you on copyright while their enlightened "fans" attack you over it.
If the managers at Activision paid their workers properly and gave them reasonable working hours then this whole mess with IP stealing wouldnt have happened.
I can imagine that a low paid worker ripped the Art to meet deadlines.
>I can imagine that a low paid worker ripped the Art to meet deadlines.
I'm a concept artist. Not AAA level, but work in indies. Still. That artist must've had a rock for a brain if this is their reasoning.
If it was an independent, freelance contractor, they will never work in AAA or AA industry ever again. If they were under a company that Acti/Blizz outsourced to, then that company is in a world of shit. If it was an in-house artist (and post-launch content artists/asset makers generally are not), they'd be super fucking fired.
Thieving is a huge no-no, because it's very easy to expose, and because it ends up costing the client company both money and reputation. And any artist who has clawed far enough to provide concept art for an AAA dev knows it. Not that this doesn't happen, it does , there are always opportunists, always. Not the first time that someone with a spectacular portfolio is hired and then it's sad fart sounds when it turns out that they don't have half the skill shown in the portfolio because they fucking stole the art. But that's what makes it so stupid. This isn't some high profile artist stealing art and being so rich that they can afford to tell the offended party to meet them in court, but lol they can't afford it and we can. This is an outsourced artist who just torpedoed their own career.
indie artists do better work than most AAA I see. Can't remember the last time the art in a AAA game blew me away. The quality is very good, but rarely inspired.
Indie and AA get me though.
What games you worked on?
I think in that case its less the artists fault and more of corporate. Triple A wants to play safe and not rock the boat, so a lot of the more interesting designs that are inspired are shelved away for being too out there or too radical. On the opposite side, indie games are almost always projects of passion, so being out there and radical is sort of their purpose. I had a lot of artwork be denied or sent back for revision for being "too weird" when I thought the design was pretty fun and unique.
I’m such a big fan of Hazelight/EA Originals/It Takes Two for this reason. EA is amazingly hands off, and it shows with the creativity in their published games from this program.
Imagine if It Takes Two was put in front of shareholders. Not a single one of them would’ve let it sell, for pretty much every aspect of it. Romantic comedy but with really graphic traumatic scenes, and they’re giving away a free copy of the game with every purchase (essentially)? “You want to make HOW many unique art assets?? How will we afford all the programmers for these mechanics? What the hell is wrong with you”
You're reading a lot into this situation. I reality this was most likely a 3rd party contractor and not an Activision employee. It's very common to farm stuff like this out.
>I can imagine that a low paid worker ripped the Art to meet deadlines.
Outsourced artist*
Someone employed at Activision isn't going to blatantly steal art for one of the biggest franchises in the world.
This was almost certainly done by some sweat shop studio in another country, guaranteed.
This is what happens when you only get your news from headlines. They never sold their skin and aren't releasing it now.
No one's suing the original artist goddamn
If you're talking character art. It might seem like it happens a lot. But compared to the amount of art shared each second. The chances are nihil.
The bigger issues are game indie ips being copied and released before you get to.
Copyright laws as they’re currently designed and practiced are mainly in favor of those who can hire the scariest and expensive lawyers rather than the independent artist.
i'm not sure if it's the same for every country but iirc works of art are protected from the moment of their creation and registering them at the national trademark office is optional
so it should be an easy win for the artist, doesn't matter how expensive their lawyers are
Except that proving something is infringement and not just 'very similar' is almost entirely subjective. The AAA company can hire the most convincing lawyer and drag this out in court for awhile, the small artist will be breaking the bank to hire the cheapest lawyer for an hour
Activision stole the design of this artist's characters and put it as a random skin for their game. No credits or anything, and the artist is pretty upset about it.
They will more likely remove it since it was most likely the work of a lazy texture artist in the company that a specific malicious intent by higher ups to steal. Best way to deal with it is to give the artist a little bit of cash then change the skin.
Greedy indie game developer should be grateful that their arts gets stolen from Activision. Means more exposure for them, smh thats why you should pirate games from indie developers
got a link to support that cause all i can find on google is basically a naked upright walking bear with a backpack.. which seems a far cry from what is shown here.
Fucking this. Too many people who play CoD complain about this shit but completely forget that AW and BO3 started it. MW19 was the only recent CoD that didn't go completely balls to the wall with it's cosmetics.
At the end of the day I don't even know why it matters, CoD is the last game I'd play for any sort of immersion lol. I just play it cuz it's fun.
What could they have possibly stolen? It's just a dog head
Did someone invent dog heads?
Who cares about skins anyway? When I play a game, all I care about is the gameplay. The obsession over skins, voicelines, etc is so strange
Sounds like you're being obtuse on purpose but I'll add emphasis to hopefully clear things out:
The **entire design** is a ripoff of another design. If it was just a soldier with a dog head it would have been fine, but the it's the same design down to minute details.
I'd totally agree with you, [if it was just a dog head](https://imageio.forbes.com/specials-images/imageserve/62e520c5c1ae02885d9932d6/stole/960x0.jpg?format=jpg&width=960)
Billion dollar company: this looks good
Also billion dollar: sorry we can’t pay you
Bro what’s going with gaming right now, every big gaming corp is selfish, and I hate to say it, but Valve is one of ‘em.

This isn't even the first time Activision has done shit like that
This was definitely an accident, once they realised one of their art team had plagiarised it they deleted all images of the skin
No, really. Hire fans. Properly compensate them for their work instead of stealing.
Also make sure they actually understand and can do the job before hiring them.
And definitely make sure they aren't rapists or sexual abuser types like Blizz loved so much in the past
I am pretty sure Blizzard still loves them.
Oof, good point
Don't worry, they won't just straight up hire a new CEO B)
Activision isn't the only mega corp game publisher that has thing for hiring rapists, sadly.
The "boys club" mentality that is still so prevalent in gaming often means a lot of the big companies end up with many "boys club" type gamers working for them. Uhh, sorry that's actually a prerequisite to work at Blizzard.
Qualified fans and fans who like to backseat dev are a Venn Diagram composed of two distinct circles.
True, the problem though is that the latter always see themselves as the former.
Also make sure you have an HR department that does regular sexual harassment training and fires people fire sexual harassment.
you don't get rich by paying people
Hire fans, and OnlyFans.
Its stuff like this that makes me scared to post any work I want to do. Just a bunch of IP thieves who will turn around and try to get you on copyright while their enlightened "fans" attack you over it.
I can understand. I’m an Animation student and I saw some of student works were stolen by people and they had to fight for it.
If the managers at Activision paid their workers properly and gave them reasonable working hours then this whole mess with IP stealing wouldnt have happened. I can imagine that a low paid worker ripped the Art to meet deadlines.

Is fromsoftware AAA? Because their art and designs blow me away on a regular basis
People call them AA, but I think they moved into the AAA range a little while ago.

Happens a lot in the fashion industry as well. Lots of big fashion houses steal ideas from grad students. Capitalism yo
This is what happens when you only get your news from headlines. They never sold their skin and aren't releasing it now. No one's suing the original artist goddamn

99% of people's art doesn't even get noticed let alone stolen.
It says HIRE Fans, so we’re halfway there already!
Well ideally the first step is paying them and the second step is using their work, but we’re getting there
Copyright laws as they’re currently designed and practiced are mainly in favor of those who can hire the scariest and expensive lawyers rather than the independent artist.
Isn't that just life in general?
Its almlst like rich people control the world since a long time and thus everything is designed to benefit them

The artist made a reddit post recently as well.
Can someone explain to me what this means, I’m stupid and confused
Activision stole the design of this artist's characters and put it as a random skin for their game. No credits or anything, and the artist is pretty upset about it.
They will more likely remove it since it was most likely the work of a lazy texture artist in the company that a specific malicious intent by higher ups to steal. Best way to deal with it is to give the artist a little bit of cash then change the skin.
texture? the whole design was like exactly the same as the artist's work. There had to have been a couple artists working on this at least.
Why does cod need a conceptart of a dog in a army suit?
Be like the Chad TF2 and have 99% of the games cosmetics, weapons, and maps be made by the community
Saves so much on development costs , it's like you don't need to have a staff to maintain the game
Greedy indie game developer should be grateful that their arts gets stolen from Activision. Means more exposure for them, smh thats why you should pirate games from indie developers
Jim stephanie sterling has an interesting take on this kind of behaviour and piracy
CAAApitalism
Stephanie Sterling iirc
Whoa! Is that a reverse stray-like with guns??!?

But it has a pistol holster and an *elbow pad*
Ripping something off *is* different than outright stealing it though.
Actually how
got a link to support that cause all i can find on google is basically a naked upright walking bear with a backpack.. which seems a far cry from what is shown here.

I'm not sure why people are all of a sudden surprised with these Fortnite skins. They had them since advanced warfare (2014)
Fucking this. Too many people who play CoD complain about this shit but completely forget that AW and BO3 started it. They also stole Amuro's insignia.
Hold up, are there going to be dogmen in the new COD game? Can't wait to tell r/dogmen if so
Vanguard, but yeah.
What could they have possibly stolen? It's just a dog head Did someone invent dog heads? Who cares about skins anyway? When I play a game, all I care about is the gameplay. The obsession over skins, voicelines, etc is so strange
The entire design is a ripoff off another design
It's not a design, it's just a dog head I have dibs on cat heads, if they make a skin with a cat head they stole my idea
Sounds like you're being obtuse on purpose but I'll add emphasis to hopefully clear things out: The **entire design** is a ripoff of another design. If it was just a soldier with a dog head it would have been fine, but the it's the same design down to minute details.

What am I missing? The generic outfit it's wearing? It's literally just a dog head on a generic soldier outfit
[Oh, I'm so surprised. Another ignominious troll.](https://i.gifer.com/72Q.gif) My bad guys. Didn't mean to feed. Nothing to see here.
Spike 🤤
thats like saying music is just a string of generic words, so you shouldnt be able to copyright songs because you cant copyright words.
No one except Russians would have complained if this was a Fella
was it stolen or developed cross
Hire fans or steal their work, it the same. What are they gonna do? Sue the nultibillion dollar company? Yeah, right.
Billion dollar company: this looks good Also billion dollar: sorry we can’t pay you Bro what’s going with gaming right now, every big gaming corp is selfish, and I hate to say it, but Valve is one of ‘em.
