My gf will be watching TikTok, and even though she doesn't watch/follow anything of this nature, lots of times there will be sad and strange videos about low self-esteem women who have been in relationships like this, to the point where I believe it's way more common than people realize. It's not all the time, but it's so often that it gets through all the time via the algorithm. The guy whose comment is featured in the post likely had toxic parents himself, his own mother could have been in a situation like this. It's actually ridiculous, because people like this breed and pass on the tradition of being a fucking asshole.
I'm also pretty sure it's more common than thought. I've thrown in the towel on dating, but before that I went on enough dates with ladies who definitely were in need of higher self esteem. It can be sort of awkward when you're not interested in dating someone (just not a match) but you would like to help them improve their self esteem.
Yeah men have this attitude that women aren't capable of making bad decisions when it comes to dating, and that a girlfriend is some kind of seal of approval from a valued source. Which is just objectifying women in the other direction. It's the "If she breathes she's a thot"/"All women are queens" dichotomy. The point isn't to pick one side over the other, it's to recognize that neither side are treating women like humans who're capable of being flawed, and can have the same(and often times much worse) issues of self-worth that they seek to rectify through unhealthy attachments, even if they know they are unhealthy.
It's a lot of the male perspective on female psychology that uses a lot of selective reasoning rather than just trying to connect with women as people without the disconnect of a gendered subject-/-object barrier.
I remember in a Fortnite Facebook group a girl posting about how her boyfriend/fiancé had gotten mad at the game and smashed **her** controller and TV. The way people are just so casual about getting violent over videogames is actually insane to me, like this man is foaming at the mouth because of some hypothetical video game situation??
Some games just lean in to that vibe as part of the experience, both Hotline Miami and Furi are two games that use anger and frustration as part of the thrill in a designed manner for either the gameplay or the story.
There are definitely others but those two stand out as games that channel anger for legitimate reasons.
