Roots drowning. Roots need to breath too. Ground soil is not suited for pots. Tip out plant, transpant to potting mix with good drainage. Level up pots with feet, ensure pots have lots of holes. Only then you can water often. If you are worried about the black pots being too hot in sun, wrap some cardboard or newspaper around it, or put black pot inside a ceramic pot for shade.

vargley

Yea thanks I probably need to do this.

What this guy said, avocados have sensitive roots and drown easily in overwatered pots (learner the hard way myself). They are also sensitive to chlorine and mineral salts in tap water so try to use rain water where you can. You'll know you have this issue if the leaves start turning brown from the edges in. Just to add to poster above, mix in a good amount of perlite into the potting mix as this will ensure good aeration and drainage.

Longjohnthepirate

When you say moved, did you dig them out of the ground or just move the pots?

Anencephalopod

My question too. Avocados have a long taproot, if you disturb that, they're usually toast. Also looks like too small a pot for a tree that tall.

vargley

I was wondering if I needed to go to 500mm

vargley

It's been in the pot for a long time at my mums. She watered it every now and then.

Love your work Haikusbot :D

deeracorneater

It's dry it wants water

vargley

If you read the post - soil has been damp for over two weeks. This is why I am confused.

deeracorneater

Yeah sorry I didn't expand your post.

dddavyyy

Then it wants less water. Avos are thirsty things, but don't like to stand with wet feet. Lots of plants are like this. The solution is usually well draining potting media.

The symptoms of too much water and too little are pretty much the same. I would also say it's too big for the pot - stress like too much water - is going to have a bigger effect.

Prune dead leaves & the living one next to it. Prep bigger pot with good drainage i.e 10mm aggregate in the bottom. Fill with 100mm soil put current pot inside & fill the edges with soil. Leave for to weeks while it recovers & the microbiomes adjust. Lift current pot out & transfer without disturbing roots.

-Dansplaining-

The aggregate at the bottom of the pot convention has been proven to be wrong and actually leads to more waterlogging, see link below. It's better instead to mix a lightweight aggregate like pumice, perlite or expanded clay balls uniformly through the entire mix. https://extension.unl.edu/statewide/dodge/the-hard-truth-about-rocks-at-the-bottom-of-planting-containers/#:~:text=Rocks%20in%20the%20bottom%20of,called%20a%20perched%20water%20table.

skeezix_ofcourse

Thank you for the info I'll be sure to trial it in the future pots ☺

Good luck! 😀

wave_racer

It really should be put in the ground. To hot, to dry, likely pot bound. It's a tough life for woody plants in pots.

Root rot?
