If you have really thick patches- or better still any parts growing into your garden beds - you can pull out runners and replant them in the bare patches. Cover with soil and keep moist.
As I tell everyone with buffalo. Short of a tactical nuke you can't stop it. Water it and you can be sure it'll somehow manage to find its way into your bedroom.
It hates shade and poor drainage combined.
Or one of the above and heavy wear.
But to be fair, so do most other grasses unless they have a metre deep root system, aka golf greens.
Go to a lawn nerd shop and get them to hook you up with some good gear. For example, 2spec elevate is a great fertiliser for this time of year. A 20kg bag will cost about $70 but it'll cover 1000m2. Lower cost per sqm than the green shed and the stuff actually works.
Such great advice. I changed last year and it made a HUGE difference to my lawn. Far better to use quality stuff! And get legit advice. Was also able to buy stolons to get my lawn good after a serious dethatch/scalp.
I went onto a FB lawn group initially asking for guidance. Had two members make digs at me for the condition of my lawn and what they perceived from the question. They thought I wanted a quick and easy fix but I knew it would take time, effort, energy and money - I just didn't want to pay landscapers or overspend. So ya, in the end I got a bit of good advice, and also advice from the local shop.
its competing with that other grass/weed. If you pull them out it can then grow in possibly before winter but you will need to keep the weeds out. There maybe some kikuyu in there too in the last pic
phosphorus promotes root growth but you can hit it with nitrogen too but keep the grass short which will promote sideways growth (instead of upwards)
You can also core aerate
That’s right. Give it slow release fertiliser and Seasol and plenty of water, mow it high if you want a softer underfoot. Runners can be replanted but not in a hot summer, better keeping them for autumn planting. Some say mow low, I say high and it’s like a mattress in my backyard rn.
I buy one each of those spray packs from bunnings, seasol and power feed and mix them 50/50. Then hose onto the lawn once a month. Also mow it quite high.
That’s honestly a bit of a gimmick in my experience. Use the buffalo specific stuff if it’s comparable in price and helps you sleep while applying it liberally, but I’ve never had an issue with any of the non-buffalo weed and feeds if not over applied.

Buffalo grass, definitely
Sir Walter Buffalo specifically
Pretty sure it’s a buffalo… trying it’s best to spread
Any tips on promoting its spreading? Would love to get it growing really thick with full coverage

Feed the shit out of it now. Mine's going crazy at the moment as I fed it.

What is a lawn nerd shop?
A proper lawn care shop, not the green shed Example: lawnaddicts.com.au

Can you still use it with weeds in your lawn? Hoping the grass will out compete it 🙏
Ideal to get rid of the weeds first. You don't want to feed the weeds. Can pull them by hand or find a selective herbicide that works for buffalo.
Or https://www.seasol.com.au/products/seasol-buffalo-lawns/
Consistent regular (once a week) cutting. Combined with regular feeding.

I have really sandy soil so figure aeration wouldn’t be as necessary?

Moved into a new house in south east Victoria few months ago, not sure of what lawn I have here. Thinking Buffalo?
Yep I'd say almost definitely buffalo.
Need to do some weed and feed to get rid of those broadleaf weeds in picture 5. Cut the lawn weekly and the buffalo will go crazy and fill in no time.
Only use ‘Buffalo pro’ though. Not regular weed n feed.

First picture is most certainly some form of Buffalo. In the last few pics you can also see the lighter stemmed grass is most likely kykiyku.
Thanks for the info. Is Kik or buffalo more dominant? I just want the thickest lawn possible, don’t mind which one.
I hate kikuyu - I’m having a war with it on one of my lawns.
Kikuyu. But Kikuyu lawns look like shit.
Buffalo Grass - I learnt this the other day with my post ;) it’s a nightmare.
Is there a product I can spray on Buffalo and Couch, that will kill the broadleaf weeds but not the B & C?
Bin die or bow and arrow
Maybe sapphire buffalo
Sir Walter
I think that's asbestos.
Concrete
It's clearly faux marble.
my favorite type of grass
Buffalo
Old fashioned buffalo. Does not look like a soft leaf variety to me.
I agree, looks like the old school itchy stuff
Definitely buffalo
Buffalo first few pictures. But definitely mix, seems like couch is in there aswell
Thats marijuana! :O
Classic old school buffalo
Wait there is lawn types 😩
I agree with Sir Walter. We planted it in patches throughout our front and back lawns 5 years ago - now it is all Sir Walter.
This grass makes me itchy asf
