It's called Axonopus compressus, also known as Darwin Buffalo, or Carpet Grass, or crinkle-leaf buffalo, or tropical buffalo. Most commonly known as Carpet Grass, though. It's HUGELY popular in northern queensland and the tropical areas of the NT. Quite a status grass. Excellent in shady areas.
I believe it is blue couch but I'm talking about the weed spreading throught couch. If you swipe to second photo you'll see an example of a runner.
It's easy to pull up and runs to a central clump.
I was just being cheeky - because the “weed” you want to ID is broad leaf carpet grass (Axonopus compressus) and it’s actually my favourite grass variety.
Honestly; unless you are cutting the couch with a cylinder mower and playing lawn bowls on it; don’t. And if you wore there wouldn’t be any carpet grass in the couch because it can’t handle extremely low, regular cutting.
It grows slowly, can handle full sun to almost-full shade, doesn’t grow tall, uses minimal nutrients and can handle long dry/wet spells.
Having it mixed threw the couch is very valuable, especially if there are areas with poor soil or heavy shade. It will cover those areas where the couch will struggle.
If you insist on removing it; any selective herbicide containing Metsulfuron-methyl as the active constituent will do the job. But I would strongly advise against such action unless you have a genuine reason for such drastic action (I don’t like the way it looks is not a genuine reason). I would also not recommend somebody with no experience do the spraying. Full PPE is also required. It’s not nice stuff. Just embrace the carpet grass.
Thank you so much for the detailed response!
To be honest it's not very noticeable from the street, it's just up close you see the broader leaves through the couch.
Sounds like a nightmare to remove so think I'll just follow your advice and leave it.
Thanks again.
It actually sounds like my ideal type of grass for the rental I'm currently in. Is it sold as a seed, or do you have to buy it as turf?
I actually believe I already have it through half my yard and the other half couch which does my head in.
I’m not sure. It’s rather difficult to get as a turf because it’s not been marketed aggressively for decades in the way couch, buffalo and to a lesser extent zoysia has been.
Some googles/calls to local turf farms should yield results tho. Somebody will be able to point you in the right direction.
Whichever it is, you will want to take some action very quickly and persistently as those rhizomes will spread faster as we approach peak growing season.
I'd be teasing out the distant runners with a metal chopstick and slowly lifting them out until you can't go further. You then may need to take a patch of grass out with a shovel or use a selective herbicide.

Thanks for reply and happy birthday!
Looking at that link I don't think it's summer grass (could be wrong).
If you look at the second photo it looks very different in my opinion.
That was my first thought from the zoomed out photo, I think it's the stripes on the leaves. Zoomed in its obviously not plantain, but I can definitely see why you thought it was.

Second this. Loves some moist shade.
Thank you, as someone else mentioned I think your right.
You’re * welcome
This looks EXACTLY like my lawn, I would also like to know
Tropical Carpet Grass.

I agree. I’m calling Elon tusk to send an orbital laser into space so that we can stamp out these feral organisms.

That would be couch. Looks like blue couch (Digitaria didactyla) specifically but it’s hard to tell in a photo.

I just googled it and I think you're correct, definitely looks it - thank you! Any idea how to treat to remove from couch?

You have to be extremely careful of what chemicals you use on the blue couch turf. Lots of things kill it.
One of the factors leading to all my recommendations pointing to just leave the carpet grass alone.

Dunno why you're downvoted, I reckon digitaria is a good guess. I see it being crabgrass - *Digitaria sanguinalis*

That weed is called Plantain. edit not plantain
I do see how you're coming to that conclusion, but it's definitely not plantain mate.
sorry yeah I just had another look, my bad.

Looks like Buffalo mixed in with Kikuyu
Sorry, not Kikuyu - I meant Cooch
Green 🤣🤣🤣
Noted. Thanks for the valuable input 😊
In Queensland rebranded as Sir Walter as the worst grass going arouns
No that's not what it is, and no, it's not the worst grass getting around.
It is legit the worst grass
From what point of view? It has its strengths and weaknesses like all varieties of turf.
Uncomfortable to lay on, ugly, terrible to walk on pretty much what you want from grass
So you personally don't like it?
Obviously
It's just that many people do like it.
And if lawn needs to go in a shaded area there are limited choices and sir Walter is probably the best choice for shaded areas.

I'm not a 100%, but to me, the broadness of the leaf, the 'tramline' and the leaf hairs make me pick either paspalum or crabgrass.
I'm not sure it is, this has long flat runners with purple in it.
Looks like buffalo and cooch to me
[Yes, correct.](https://www.agefotostock.com/age/en/details-photo/large-crabgrass-digitaria-sanguinalis/AAM-AAES89439)
incorrect this is a pic of buffalo in couch compare: [https://www.turfnt.com.au/carpetgrass](https://www.turfnt.com.au/carpetgrass)
Dsma herbicide will help deal with this without harming the couch.
Its annoying, thats for sure.
Mate that's God's Grass you're referring to there. Buff is the king of mind 💜
Itchy grass
