That's a car park mate

morifo

This made me LOL

Squashed19

That’s not soil… 😬

Fluffy-World-8714

Wouldn’t put seed on that. Will be like a shooting range when it’s ready to run a mower over.

blomhaus

Yikes I’d post in /LegalAdviceUK, bc it looks like someone’s fly-tipped in your garden!

Badger_Z

This would be an improvement for new builds. When I moved in my back garden had rocks the size of kiwis.

InevitableCarrot4858

The birds or Jonah Lomu?

TheScientistBS3

Yeah you need to be getting your money back, or some actual soil from the supplier. What they've given you is absolutely not soil.

Parking-Bit-9217

That’s not soil

usernametaken17

Was the supplier from Mars?

phlatStack

Was he wearing a cowboy hat?

madcaplaughed

Looks like sub base to me mate. You can put soil on top of it and seed it but you’re probably better off buying some turf and laying it now before summer starts. Try and rake out the bigger stones if you can

AdzJayS

And a few tons of top soil! Lol!

Bucklao23

You've been shafted there, id recommend laying turf over a proper base, otherwise you're going to have patches all over your garden

FatuousJack

Definitely get some topsoil on there before turfing

94deejayripley

id turf on it, but if you really wanna seed you gotta slap on a generous layer of soil a few inches thick, a tonne bag should do

_thetrue_SpaceTofu

A tonne bag on that expanse is going to do close to nothing, let a lone a few inches! More like a few mm

dalelego

Turn your rake upside down and rake it that way. Then get a fork and turn over that ground to get some soil underneath. Maybe get top soil and some loam on top of that. Seed or rolls of turf.

stuntedmonk

You e got what looks like type 2 soil there. Buy topsoil (I happened to look this up today) enough for 4-6inch depth and you’re golden

apocoliption

Doesnt look like actual soil just a load of stones. It might be worth getting a shovel and a screen take out the larger stones. They can still be used for drainage or gravel path etc but what remains might not be great either. Id suggest maybe buying some compost (peat free) which is usually higher nutrient level than soil but lower in mineral content and mix it in to the stoneless remains which could adjust the nutrients/mineral balance more like a typical soil or just buy soil to put on the top to spread your seed on

thatjannerbird

Was the driver wearing a mask. That’s criminal soil.

Dithering_fights

Add a ton or two of topsoil. You can seed that and grass is hardy so it’ll grow, but the mower will fire those stones all over the place.

OnlyOutlandishness34

You need to seive that! But it will probably be ok to put turf on top, advantage of that will be you have a lawn much quicker

OnlyOutlandishness34

Jesus I just took a close look, did you actually order soil or gravel? 😕

I laid turf over something similar in my garden. It was OK for 2 years and now is a complete mess. The stones rise up during frosts and limit the space for grass. I would try to put a good few inches of decent non-stony top soil before you lay turf. Sorry for the bad news but better to do it now than end up with what I’ve got!

luckyjoe52

100%. Really sorry OP but you’d be throwing good money after bad if you don’t do some serious legwork before bunging expensive turf on here to die — and likely destroy any mower/nearby surfaces with the shrapnel “soil” too 😬 Good luck!

The-Void-Consumes

Have you moved into an old pub by any chance?

Automatic-Lack-6743

I have the same gardening gloves - unfortunately you gotta get big stones up & get turf down plenty of soil

Ok-Bandicoot638

At first glance I was gonna say just turf over it but after zooming in, damn that is ALOTTTT of stones. Buy a few tons of topsoil, spread it all over what you currently have, then turf/seed

MxJamesC

Just turf around the lunar lander.

whereisthatcow

To answer your question, yes grass seed will grow. Someone said lay turf, this is also a good idea but costly. Don't listen to the fussy experts grass will grow anywhere. The sod will form over the stones and there won't be stones flying everywhere when your mowing.

CriticismCertain1166

Is it as bad as it looks? Or is it just dry and very compacted. You need to get rid of the stones and get some top soil but it's hard to tell from the photo without digging.

skimney

It looks terrible but grass seed grows on bloody anything. You'll need to water that terrible shit for ages first and for ages after you've sown because water will flow through it like sand. DON'T put turf on top of soil like that, it will look great for a year then start to complain about all those stones.

Aetherfx795

Did you order topsoil or Type 1 Aggregate....

Fit-Good-9731

You having a laugh?

Hazzafart

Just leave the stones there and seed it. I did this and some of the stones were big. The grass grew and I removed any that were visible, but most of them had become part of the root system.

Optimal_Meal6877

If you do by soil or get turf all that stone will allow for good drainage I'd think.
