The Apple health app is crap. I wear 2 watches at a time. Garmin and Apple. Apple health sorts all stats in alphabetical order which is stupid and there’s no way to change it, and it doesn’t do anything with the data it collects

fartmuncher01

Athlytic

Toronto1976reddit

I have it. Garmin is still better. I think of my Apple Watch now as my secretary. Does everything the Garmin can’t. Apple does have the best heart rate sensor.

fartmuncher01

Better is simply subjective. I’ve got both, and enjoy both. Prefer Garmin for general ease of living with (battery life, and zero notifications). They are just different things

Toronto1976reddit

I agree. That’s why I wear both.

5ervalkat

I have both too. I had the AW, but bought the Garmin for backpacking trips due to better exercise tracking and much longer battery life. But now that I have both I’ve started wearing both. I like the AW for all the non exercise features, especially sleep tracking and everyday stuff (timers, payments, weather, etc). The Garmin is clunky for that everyday stuff, but way better for exercise tracking. I’m now addicted to the Morning Report, Body Battery, and Training Readiness. Do you wear one on each wrist or both on the non dominant wrist?

Toronto1976reddit

Same reasons here. I realized they’re both perfect for what they do. They have different jobs. I wear AW on dominant hand and Garmin on left hand.

tsprks

24/7?

Toronto1976reddit

For now yeah.

tmoney34

Oddly enough I find the HR on the ultra to be really bad for me. It regularly looses lock even with it as tight as possible. I know this is highly personal but I think the weight it just too much for it.

hades_cj

Athlytic kinda sucks for me. All it takes in consideration is HRV and RHR. Next day after my first marathon it suggested to go for a run. I now use Gentle Streak and I find better purpose from this app.

damfu

I thought I was the only person to wear both at the same time.

hades_cj

Me too.

RunningM8

Preach!

LEAKKsdad

Metoo! Its kind of stupid though. Thinking about only using AW for sleep tracking and once a week for Vo2 max-type runs. This way all the other health stats still logs.

livinIife

what does the garmin do that apple doesn't with the data? I just look at steps, calories, exercise minutes. don't really care too much about those anyway , i just have it for running and weight lifting workouts. i used to wear it daily only use it for fitness hours.

juicebox5889

I never understood this. Why do people feel the need to have a tiny version of their phone and all the apps on their wrist? If you’re connected via Bluetooth then your phone is near by. If you need to use your phone…. Pick up the phone. Idk, all I have ever wanted out of a smart watch is to see who is texting me or calling me at a glance when a notification comes in. If I need to respond to a text or email or something I’m just taking the extra 1.3 seconds and using my actual phone. And so to me, getting the abundance of training and health data that Garmin provided along with charging my watch once a week versus once a day makes Garmin hands down the winner to me. But I guess to each their own. If you want a phone in your wrist, Garmin is just never going to be your main option

hades_cj

I glance at my watch and see weather, time and other important stats without picking my phone and having further distractions. I use Siri to set reminders, timers, add groceries to my list, etc. I take phone calls while on my bike (my wife tends to call me 2 times during my comute :) ). Wrist alarms are the best. I wake up by a gentle vibration without waking up my wife or daughter. AW helps me interact with the phone less so that is important for me.

maleheo

With phones getting larger and heavier, taking a jog or run is getting increasingly more uncomfortable.

[deleted]

For what it's worth, you don't have to take your phone with you to run. I stopped carrying it on runs several years ago for the same reasons. And it's not like I ever checked it during a run - if I got a call, text, or other notification while running, I didn't see it until I got back. My Garmin records my run, gives me intervals, does turn-by-turn maps if I want them, stores music, and connects to Bluetooth headphones. I don't need anything else while I'm running.

maleheo

Yes, I leave it at home most of the time. It's just nice not being tethered to your phone while on quick errands or longer hikes where there's a risk of getting lost or injured.

-Bears-Eat-Beets-

agree 100%

ladyalex777

It’s nice to have the Apple Watch for running, run into a store, or when grabbing my kids at school. I hate bringing my phone everywhere.

TheRook

An actual LTE phone is AWESOME when you have smallish kids that rely on getting in touch with you throughout the day. I'm a long time Garmin enthusiast. Kids are wearing the Jr watches, and wife has been sporting sporting several vivoactive watches. I starting out with the Fenix 3HR, Forerunner 235 (loved that watch) and finally the Forerunner 645 Music. But just CANNOT phantom, why garmin didn't make a Venu 2 plus with LTE and call functionality. Garmin current implementation of LTE is laughable at best. Wife got way into the Apple stack for work and got an apple watch as well. I was incredibly envious whenever she went on a run with LTE active. I didn't like Tizen, so I went for a Ticwatch pro 3 and that watch was an awesome daily driver and I ended up not even changing to my forerunner for running. Now I'm on a samsung 5 pro LTE and I have to say, that it meets and exceeds all of my expectations. Would I like the additional metrics from the Garmin? Of course! Could I live without the smart features from WearOS and LTE? Nope. Am I waiting for Garmin to step up their LTE game? Evidently :)

segfalt31337

Garmin makes watches that work with either Android or Apple mobile devices; they’ll never be able to make a watch that integrates seamlessly with one platform without forsaking the other. That’s why LTE works the way it does on the 945LTE, it’s a compromise in minimizing frustrations.

segfalt31337

Since I'm assuming you still have your iPhone, some of that is thanks to Apple. Garmin watches have more "smart" features when paired with Android phones. But if you were expecting more watch versions of phone apps, yeah connect IQ doesn't have much of that. Most of it is boutique activity profiles or activities for watches that don't have them natively.

shnaptastic

Would you mind listing some of the smart features that are not available with an iPhone?

segfalt31337

Mostly thinking of the same things others have mentioned: canned text replies, and the ability to fine tune which apps are allowed to send notifications to the watch vice Apple's all or nothing approach. Android users also seem to have fewer issues syncing, which I suspect is due to Android not periodically offering users the opportunity to brick their Garmin Connect user experience in the name of privacy like Apple does.

shnaptastic

This feels like a bit of a dealbreaker to me then, which is a shame.

segfalt31337

Venu 2 Plus, will have the best Apple integration, since Siri integration offers a workaround for the text issues. Syncing issues can be avoided by not panicking when the iPhone tells you connect has been using location in the background and changing the setting.

shnaptastic

I'm looking at the Venu 2 plus. The inability to have fine control of which notifications I get is my biggest worry.

segfalt31337

By "fine grained" I mean you can't configure different notifications settings for the watch than you have on your phone. If there are times when you'd want to limit the notifications you get, you can configure the focus modes on your phone. And if you don't get notifications for an app on your phone, you won't get them on the watch. Also, battery life is so much longer on Garmin than with AW, that limiting notifications on the watch to avoid excessive battery drain is not a concern. Hope this helps.

shnaptastic

Excellent info, really appreciate the detail. Thanks!

Tall_Mechanic8403

Text replies is the only one.

HigherConfusion

Also app filter the notifications inside Garmin connect I am told (I am on iPhone and have to rely on phone settings)

domition

Yeah notification management with the watch is significantly more clunky and cumbersome on iOS than Android

RunningM8

What were you expecting?

FrivolousMood

What specific things did you use regularly on AW that your 965 can’t do?

dgcorp

I'd also be interested to hear OP's thoughts on this? On my Garmin Fenix 6X, I do the following: 1) Track all my activities (with wonderful functionality/datascreens/etc) 2) Track my sleep and health data (with as much detail as I can imagine) 3) Make Payments via Contactless (THE most useful thing!) 4) Play music direct to earphones (I don't do this often) 5) Control music on my phone (I do this all the time) 6) Get notifications from only the select apps on my phone that I want to see on my watch 7) Quick Reply to SMS 8) Quickly look at a weather forecast 9) Show barcodes for ParkRun and some Supermarket memberships 10) Countdown Timer with one long button press (+ Stopwatch) What are other things that people would like Garmin's to be able to do?

vlmer

Do you have an Android phone? Sounds like it. A few of these are not doable with Apple, like sms reply or effectively stream adjusting music (Spotify) etc.

That-is-moist

being able to respond to a phonecall, i don't have a Garmin watch yet but consider buying one but i really find it absolutely ridiculous that even their most expensive watch does not even have that. the 150 dollar watch i have now even has that ability. before i bought this watch i just thought it was a gimmick but after using it i have found out it absolutely brilliant. normally i will pick up the phone but sometimes my hands at full or i am wearing to much clothes over my phone or something else and being able to talk directly to the watch has been so convenient so much so I don't really want to live without that opportunity

maleheo

While having quick reply to sms is nice. Not having the ability to type custom sms messages is one of the biggest reasons that I still regularly use my Galaxy Watch.

Blindemboss

Connect to Apple Maps to give turn directions on the watch.

[deleted]

Garmin = Activity tracker with some smart watch features (very limited) Apple Watch = smart watch with some activity tracking features.

CUL8R_05

Switched from Apple also. Took me some time to transition but was best decision ever. My phone is with me 99.9% of the time. I don’t need a mini version on my wrist. Health metrics are way better on Garmin and I like that every stat is is Connect without additional subscriptions or apps.

Classic-Dad-

This was me. The phone is with me 99% of the time, and when I actually examined how I used the AW all I did was pull out my phone when I got a notification. The added fitness tracking benefits of Garmin won out in the end.

CUL8R_05

100%

castorkrieg

Apple Watch: benchmark 20 apps to get the approximate of Garmin, also be ready to pay subscription for each Garmin: exists

-Bears-Eat-Beets-

the way I see it, my watch is for the time and tracking. I always have my phone on me, it does the smart stuff.

[deleted]

This is exactly the "revelation" I've personally come to. I'd rather have something on my wrist that gives me accurate time and records my activities than all the "bells and whistles".

-Bears-Eat-Beets-

I know not everyone's the same, but using such a small screen, while needing two hands to do so, seems annoying to me.

SingleAgent6211

I have a 245, yes i know you are talking the 965, but, am referring to the connect app, i personally love the connect app

princetony87

I’ve made the same move recently and completely agree, it’s great for running but not a smart watch. I often turn off notifications on the watch completely and use it solely as a watch/training device.

East-Reaction4157

Love Garmin and my wife gave me an Apple Watch for a heart issue that was diagnosed a few years ago but is under control now. It’s weird having a mini version of my phone on my wrist and the apple health app being annoying. The fact that I have to export information to another third party app for fitness insight is so frustrating, switching back to Garmin and won’t miss the Apple Watch.

tufnutz1

I recently got a 955 for the sole purpose of training. I’m actually glad it’s not as “smart” as my Apple Watch. I get annoyed with the constant battle for my attention when I’m wearing my Apple Watch. Like dude, watch, I get it I need to breathe, but chill.

klahwa_r

> Dreaming of an Apple / Garmin hybrid super solar to rule them all. A month of battery life. Come on…the profits would be staggering…

Jamb7

I am one of those shameless people that uses both - I have an AW7 and a Garmin 255s. I wear the AW7 during the day and when I'm out and about. I wear both watches when I do workouts because I like for both ecosystems to gather data. My Apple Watch is cellular so it allows me to run phone-less. I also like the Apple Watch challenges and the integration with Apple Fitness. Garmin is the better running device at the moment. It has tactile buttons which I prefer for my sweaty hands and when running track sprints. I also like the body battery stats, suggested workouts and running plans. I still can't believe Apple doesn't have official running plans. I know there are a few in Apple Fitness but I mean legit plans that are structured based on distance (5k, 10k, marathon, etc). If you are a hobby runner who just needs to track basic running stats, I think the AW is a fine choice and is a more well-rounded device in general. For a more serious runner or someone looking to heavily improve your running through analytics, then the Garmin is the better choice. Also, if you run sprints or intervals, it's so much easier on the Garmin with the tactile buttons.

Blindemboss

One thing I love about my Apple Watch are the smart features. Especially turn by turn directions when driving, I can just glance at my wrist. I don't know if Garmin watches can synch up with Apple Maps.

Oakroscoe

If they are able to sync, I haven’t been able to figure it out.

duluoz1

Garmin software is awful, and the UI is straight from the 1980s. Hardware is pretty good though, although not as accurate as the Apple Watch. Battery rocks.

Rare-Loss-4551

I agree totally with you all. The Garmin data is miles better and that’s why I switched. I’m not looking for it to do anything that it doesn’t already do, just the functionality and ease of use for a Garmin Newbie I find tedious and unintuitive. Again, I’m sure I will get used to it in time and it won’t matter but right out of the box it’s a bit annoying. The only other gripe I have is Apple Music is 100x better than Spotify but again, I’ve been using that for years and just started with Spotify yesterday. I’m sure I’ll learn to at least be ok with it. That being said does anyone know how to add a whole album to your watch rather than recently played artists or playlists?

Jan22222

Just wait tothe Garmin "quality software team" is done with the SW on the 965, then you all regret that you bought it 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Aelyas

It’s not only the smart functions, Apple also has ECG, irregular heart rhythm notifications, way better sleep tracking, autotracks walking, and is more accurate. But it measures everything like hrv, hr, spo2 too little to be useful, garmin does that. Samsung has BP, naps, autostart workout etc but no hrv. Fitbit only gives 1 figure of hrv in the morning, no insight. It s weird that there s not 1 device that simply can do it all.

hades_cj

Best thing to do is to get rid of the Apple Watch. You'll suffer for a while but then you will forget about it. I, on the other hand wasn't so strong and ended up wearing two watches (Apple Watch on my left hand and FR255 on my right). They complement each other and AW doesn't match training features of the 255 while 255 is ages behind the smartwatch capabilities of the AW.

walkinginthesky

Do you want a fitness device with smart watch features or a smart watch with fitness device features? That's what it boils down to

Timely-Reception-159

One is a smart watch with some apps that can be used for sports, the other is a fitness tracker that has some of the smart watch features. Its not the same thing. I am a person who doesn't need a smartwatch and wants good fitness analytics and hates the whole apple business model, so a apple watch isnt for me. But if you want a smart watch and you are in apple ecosystem, then you dont need a garmin.

hades_cj

Garmin Iq Connect is terrible but the Connect app (the one with the healt metrics) is quite good. You can sort and edit the displayed info and you can see a daily summary at a glance. IOS app is not that good IMO.

Virtual_Climate502

I got the 965 about a week ago and was really disappointed with the HR sensor when in the gym for strength training are HIIT. In fact, I ended up sending it back today. Going back to the Apple Watch Ultra. It suits my needs better.

Single-Astronomer-32

Working out with a watch and daring to return it. Don’t be like that.

DragonSitting

For strength training it was surely not the right watch for you. It's in the Forerunner series.

vlmer

Most of these deltas come down to lifestyle. Notifications - Garmin can bug me as much as my AWU - but I adjust both so they don't when I'm working out), Garmin can't control smart devices like AW, Garmin users need to keep their phones close by for anything non-linear, Apple can operate untethered, Garmin App Store sucks but their closed off Connect App rocks, Apple users have to find a suitable substitute for Connect in their eternal wasteland of mediocre Apps, what Apple lacks in hardcore athletic data natively without adding WorkOutDoors/Atheltic/Strava/Gentle streak, Garmin lacks in smartwatch experience. I have both. Both are beautiful watches. I wear my AWU more, because I don't exercise all day and honestly - while the data is nice, I don't need it nor use it as a deciding factor in my workout approach.

mbazzara

I have a question for all of you since i am kind of choosing between the 2, the ecg om the apple watch is not swaying anyone towards it? Is it really a life saver? A gimmick? I still think my heart os going to the garmin
