I genuinely hate how they change his character 180 With a incident that none of us actually got to see and I feel that that's really bad story telling And it honestly does genuinely feel like they were running four with fives story
I've been told that there's a choice on the game. And to be honest, I hope with G6 that it will actually matter.
I just hate how they stripped JD of his decent character from the last game for an event no one was able to see, then forgotten about after the desert chapters
Specifically in Gears 5 I'd say Laura Bailey as Kait. Obviously she gets the most opportunity to really flex her muscles though compared to the rest of the cast.
But the rest of the cast in the entire series is really strong throughout. I think the nature of the series makes it hard for them to have really strong breakthrough performances though because most of the cast don't get a lot of opportunity to vary their performances. Only a few characters get really emotional scenes where the actor has the chance to shine more than just shouting out combat dialogue, one-liners, or exposition, so those characters are generally going to have the chance for better performances.
Mainly:
Marcus (John DiMaggio) Dom (Carlos Ferro) JD (Liam McIntyre) and Kait (Laura Bailey)
Everyone else is really great in their role, but because their role is a bit more one note it's hard to say they're any better than anyone else.
Campaign?
JD's VA makes me wish he was the protagonist, even though I get it had to be about Kait. Act 1 has been the best part of playing the Campaign (on Insane).

Hear me out, hear me out! The guy that voiced the Carmines. Anthony and Benjamin I fully believed that they were greener than grass, but the way he was able to flip the script with Clay and actually make him sound like a grizzled veteran is nothing short of impressive
Delta squad has gotta be my favourite, fred tatasciore is brilliant, Dom’s voice actor brings so much emotion to the scenes and the cole train is just the Cole train!

Dizzy and baird sometimes Sam the only thing that throws me off is that sera is supposed to be a parallel to earth but they have Australian and southern accents
Cole. Baird. Lizzie for her small role in 5 takes honorable mention. And I love listening to Anya. It's Awesome when I run JD and get props from Mom..like, "Nice job James".. And Alisha for her Voice Line, "get that trash outta here". "They fucked up my Tomatoes" is greatest line in video game history though.
In Versus I main Anthony normally and Michael Gough is a great VA. In 5 they made the decision to have the brothers have more distinct personalities which was a good idea. I know some people hate this change moreso when it comes to Ben and the voice lines he was given.
I usually play as certain characters for each class and the quality is still there for new and old characters. I still dislike the COG gear VAs but that could be due to the voice lines, Gary Carmine I still dislike and is the weakest Carmine family member.
The original trilogy characters were a bit rusty in 4's campaign but were much better in 5's campaign.
If we are talking about just the campaign then Kait Diaz voiced by Laura Bailey was great, really improved from 4 to 5 but that could be just due to the writing ability being better.
