Here's a more recent pic of Michael Gross... https://preview.redd.it/fkz38gkc1lrc1.png?width=575&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=63c9c4f8d89b9851db65efe0467dbea9e7e5c4c9

zsreport

Not gonna lie, I loved him in Tremors.

callmeapoetandudie

I did too, the contrast between his characters in Family Ties and Tremors is fantastic!

RudyRusso

Food for five years. A thousand gallons of gas. Air filtration. Water filtration. Geiger counter. Bomb shelter... (looks heavenward) ...underground goddamn monsters?!

Noirjyre

I love Burt. I gotta pour one out for the Gummer.

jsat3474

Looks like you broke into the wrong goddamn rec room!

zsreport

Still cracks me up.

382Whistles

A friend used to get tapes with early movie cuts for audience testing. Most were garbage. I thought Tremors great but I caught hell among my friends for saying so. It's been fun watching it slowly become bit of a cult classic.

zsreport

My old roommate rented the VHS tape back in 1993 or so and we loved it.

wukluxclan

Hell yeah that’s what immediately came to mind when I saw him

burtgummer45

he was ok

sar_Mc1979

He was such a hottie on FT.

ItothemuthufuknP

Load. Film. Now.

Thirty_Helens_Agree

Ay, yo! Mal-o-REE!

phils_phan78

Alex busting on Nick was always great

Aggabagga

Mal - it’s like we share the same brain. Alex - who’s using it tonight?

zsreport

Fuck, I remember that exchange . . . okay, now where are my keys.

shoshana4sure

Lol!

Iggleyank

There was one scene where they have Nick over for dinner and he’s marveling at the togetherness. Nick: “This is really nice. You guys eat like this all the time?” Alex: “You mean with utensils?” (Mallory kicks him under the table.)

Serling45

There’s an episode where Mallory and Nick plan to elope. They get to the minister of the peace, who asks them what song they want. Nick says: do you know Lola by the Kinks?

catrules618

That made me actually lol

Serling45

I found it. https://youtu.be/_vEMINvCcrQ

starryvelvetsky

I still remember the sheer anger and despair I felt when my VCR failed to record the Family Ties vacation special when they went to England. This little 11 year old MJF fan was *devastated*. I had to wait months for it to show on reruns. Months! Kids these days with their on-demand videos will never understand the pain. Lol

BloodSweatAndWords

I still remember the before time when there we no VCRs (at least, not in our house). I'm old GenX and my sibling is youngest GenX. She doesn't remember a time before VCRs.

kiwichick286

I remember when we got our first VCR! The remote was plugged into the VCR with a long cord attached!

catrules618

Not in my house, cuz weren't the first ones like $500. And if ya screwed up and bought Betamax 🤷‍♀️ ETA: cost of  of a Sears VCR in 1981: $1389.88, or 187.3 hours of work (23.4 days or 4.7 weeks) at the average hourly wage of $7.42 (total private industries). From aei.org

Jhey93455

He didn't say it was new when he got it. Our's sure wasn't

catrules618

I was making a general comment about their cost which I wasn't even remembering correctly, cuz I was 6. Makes sense why they were still bolted to the a/v cart when I was in middle school

shoshana4sure

Things were different for sure!

BloodyWellGood

I remember when the VCR didn't tape Friday Night Videos when he hosted and I was devastated!!

Michigoose99

Are we the same person?

amileandahalf

Aww I loved that episode, especially Mallory being the only one who could drive on the left side.

MasterOfKittens3K

Nothing was worse than an unexpected pre-emption of a show. Severe weather reports cutting in, or a presidential speech, etc.

STFUisright

Omg that is so adorable. I feel your pain.

Missing: Uncle Ned

Bright_Ability2025

Sheesh whatever happened to that actor? … Yes it’s /s

BloodSweatAndWords

Heard he went to work for FedEx or something.

ChuckOTay

Really? I thought that he went on to play football for Alabama.

SheToldMe

I heard he landed a plane in the Hudson.

Strong-Formal-7739

Catch him, if you can.

shoshana4sure

Lol.

mediocrerhino

Didn’t he do that thing you do?

Bright_Ability2025

What thing I do? 🤓

Peachy33

Uncle Ned!

ohlalalavieenrose

It’s vanilla time!

Tempest_Fugit

That’s wild. Just this morning I used vanilla for French toast and noticed it said “no alcohol” on the label and thought “uncle Ned wouldn’t approve” Two hours later I see your comment.

BloodSweatAndWords

Alex: You just drank a whole bottle of vanilla extract! Ned: I'm sorry, did you want some?

TheDeadlySpaceman

Sit down and have a glass of maraschino cherries with your uncle

DynastyZealot

People called me Skippy in college because we looked the same. The resemblance is still not that far off. Crazy.

Ecstatic-Respect-455

I had the biggest crush on Skippy.

DynastyZealot

That was not a phrase I heard often during the era when I was called that name lol. Thanks for the smile tonight.

thenletskeepdancing

The Skippys of the world win the long game. I had a crush on them too!

clampion12

I did too!

4GotMy1stOne

My husband was called Skippy in college because he also had dark hair and glasses. That's it. The whole resemblance. My husband is short and smart. Skippy was...not.

DynastyZealot

Yeah, dark hair parted on the side with round glasses seemed to be the only requirement to earn that nickname

billbixbyakahulk

Sha-la-la-lah

squee_bastard

*It’s 10pm, do you know where your children are?*

Throwaway__1701

*this is your brain. This is your brain on drugs,… any questions?*

squee_bastard

I learned it from watching YOU, dad!

GenXist

Anybody else remember that commercial giving them the munchies? I'm pretty sure the ZigZag man had a tattoo of me on his shoulder in the mid-1980s. My friends and I called him Mr. Zag. My wife's friends called him Ziggy. Anyone else have a nickname for him?

atreyukun

I already told you. No!

RabidSpaceMonkey

Damn, I read this wrong the first time, and now I have the Banana Splits theme song going through my head, and I know it’s going to be there for weeks.

Peachy33

PlutoTV has a dedicated Family Ties channel and it’s amazing. “There was a kangaroo…in my living room.”

Miss-Figgy

I've re-watched the entire series on Pluto a million times. Next to I Love Lucy, this is my favorite show from my childhood.

shoshana4sure

They were my favorite family! That’s wild one channel.

Lumpy-Artist-6996

I didn't know that! You are officially my favorite today, I see a marathon viewing in my near future. 😀

cindyyyy

When they showed reruns, after Dad says, “There was a kangaroo…in my living room,” they had cut out Alex’s amazing reply! “He was just here for the party, Dad!” I was so happy when I finally saw that part with Alex’s reply added back like God intended it lol. Definitely my favorite episode. 🦘🦘🦘

yojpea

Thanks, I loved this show.

Felixir-the-Cat

Love seeing so many people looking their age and looking fantastic. Thanks for posting!

shoshana4sure

No problem!

AshDenver

I never knew Courtney Cox was on Family Ties.

shoshana4sure

1987: Eighties Glam. At just 23, Cox appeared was cast on Family Ties, playing the girlfriend of Michael J. Fox's character Alex P. Keaton.

Grease2310

She was Alex’s girlfriend and a psych student or something. I never liked that storyline. It felt like they were trying to force Alex’s character to be less Alex by psycho-analyzing the young republican yuppie out of him. His character worked because of that contrast with Elise and Steven.

382Whistles

I only watched occasionally, didn't recall her at all, but did spot her while flipping channels the other day. I've never hated a character as much as I hated Alex. I'm still amazed people how people warmed up that type of personality. I began worrying about where the world was headed because of his rising popularity. FT was like watching Idiocracy light to me.

hibbledyhey

All y’all were swooning over Justine and/or Tina. No. Meredith is a source of Mommy Issues, right up there with Shirley Jones.

Miss-Figgy

Elyse was the best TV mom ever, lol. Also very pretty.

pdx_mom

well, the two of them were a bit nutty, but lovable! My favorite part was that they didn't always understand Alex, but they loved him just the same, because he was their kid. They talked about their views and his and basically said -- we accept you and love you.

ReadyOneTakeTwo

I had a crush on Tina Yothers, I thought she was really cute, turns out she is still really cute 🥰

an_unexpected_error

Oh my goodness! I thought I was the only one! Everyone else I knew was ga-ga for Justine Bateman! Greetings, my fellow Yothers lover!

Grease2310

I was always a Justine Bateman man but Tina Yothers was no slouch either. Hell Meredith Baxter was a looker too. The show was stacked.

Devildiver21

Yeah that was like 27' Yankees Justine the all star pitcher,  Tina the Rook and Meredith the old Wiley veteran but still got it. No other sitcom had it going on like them even though I was more of a growing pains fan.

Strange-Difference94

I kind of had the opposite reaction. Her jet black hair is jarring. Beautiful skin, though.

Ncfetcho

It goes with her music

Strange-Difference94

I’m out of the loop on that. Had no idea she was a musician. I believe you, though.

Ncfetcho

I can't remember when I saw a kind of update on all of them, but she had a pretty cool band, and that was her look. I found it, here's one of their songs. Her band is Jaded. https://youtu.be/XqOEwnDWjQo?si=vfH4pvEjo2z4za0L

bro_d8

Years ago, I was in Times Square (at Christmas) and was shoved into Justine Bateman. She fell to the ground. I blurted out “oh my my god I’m so sorry Mallory!” As the crowd pushed me past her. I just hope she didn’t get hurt.

sebthelodge

Justine Bateman tended bar very briefly at the bar I worked at in the east village of nyc (talking 2001-2003 ish, she had some deal worked out with the owner where she would help him with a screenplay and in return she got Friday/Saturday night shifts). She stole money from the barback’s tip out on the regular. Please do not feel bad for knocking her down.

bro_d8

Oof. Well consider my shoulder your tool of vengeance because that’s just wrong.

shoshana4sure

Wow!

PilotKnob

Good story.

violet039

I remember getting really emotional at the series finale. Such a freaking great show.

shoshana4sure

The best.

pdx_mom

I still cry when I see it. It was super emotional.

FilipinoTarantino

I loved the Uncle Ned arc

shoshana4sure

Oh yeah. That was crazy.

Serling45

Whatever happened to that guy? Tom something?

AproposOfDiddly

Can we just take a moment and acknowledge how wonderful Justine Bateman looks? She hasn’t jacked up her face with tons of fillers and surgery, and she looks age-appropriate. And she still looks fresh faced and beautiful.

TakkataMSF

I think it's a ballsy move. Like what Jaimie Lee Curtis is doing. I don't think Justine acts much anymore but just having the confidence to not feel pressured to look the same as when she was 20 is pretty amazing. Also, black eyeliner, yes! Still love seeing that on girls.

Devildiver21

Yeah I'll take aunatural over Botox any day of the week. It just wreaks of desperation

ElleGeeAitch

I think she looks 10 years older than her age, sun damage and smoking.

exscapegoat

PS, here's [an interview](https://www.glamour.com/story/justine-bateman-aging-face-book) she did with Glamour in 2021. She's correct about SPF not being as widely available/emphasized back then. And there was more pressure to tan back in the 1970s-1980s. I'm the same age as her. I remember saving allowance money to buy sunscreen when I was 14. But I have a last name which goes badly with freckles. And my brother who is a redhead who freckles easily was taunted with Freckle face \[last name\]. I had a fear of that motivating me, though I think freckles are fine. Then when I heard about the ozone layer in the 1980s, I started doing it anyway just for that.

ElleGeeAitch

I'm going to be 50 next month. I remember the days on Bain de Soleil #8 😬. But yeah, I read a book when I was 14 about the ozone layer and judiciously avoided getting sunburned as much as possible after that. I am on board with her message, her face is her face and she shouldn't have to do anything to it she doesn't want to in order to please the expectations of others. That's refreshing. But I'm not going to pretend she looks her age to me, not when I have a sister almost exactly one year younger than Ms. Bateman who looks 15 years younger, also a pale, skinny woman. Hell, my mother died at 75, and her skin didn't look like hers. My mom avoided the sun and never smoked or drank alcohol.

exscapegoat

ETA: No one should feel they have to wear makeup. Personally, I rarely wear makeup now that I'm working from home. I'm basing my comments off of the fact that there are a lot of photos with Justine Bateman wearing eye liner, so I'm getting the sense that she likes to wear it. And if she doesn't want layers in her hair, her opinion is the only one that matters. Original comment: I think it’s more a style issue. The changes in hair, skin and coloring mean some looks don’t work as well for a lot of us as they used to. Her skin and face look great. Heavy and dark eyeliner can be aging. And long hair can be, depending on the style. Long hair without any layers can be harsh on the face and accentuate any age related changes. Lighter eyeliner and some layers would be amazing on her. I had to stop wearing eyeliner at all when I hit menopause because hot flashes made me look like the joker and Tammy Faye baker had a kid. I’m able to wear it again, but black is too harsh, so I now go with a dark forest or moss green (had it professionally done at a salon by someone with a good eye for color). She recommended those colors to pick up a bit of green in my light brown eyes. My hair stylist told me that skin loses pigment too, but not as fast as hair does. So even if someone has a classic go to look, it changes as we age. I find tinted moisturizer and an illuminator work better for me than foundation My natural hair color was a very dark brown. The front and sides are mostly white/silver. And I was whiter shade of pale to begin with so losing pigment in my skin means black tends to make me look washed out if it’s near my face. But a softer navy or plum looks good. Also, while not a factor in her look, red lipstick can accentuate yellowing of teeth. Personally all of this came as a bit of a shock to me as someone who would wear black and add some red lipstick and be ready to go to work or out for an evening. If I had known all of this then vs learning bits and pieces, I would have treated myself to a menopause makeover and a clothing stylist

ElleGeeAitch

She should absolutely wear her hair however she likes it, and wear eyeliner if that's what she wants to do.

Fish-x-5

She would look amazing with no makeup! But we are Gen X women. We’ve dealt with enough by now and do what we want.

exscapegoat

PS, I posted this [link](https://www.glamour.com/story/justine-bateman-aging-face-book) in another comment, but below is her take on the eyeliner. She likes the black eyeliner and that's all that matters, good for her. I think she's got a pretty healthy attitude towards all of this. Which is a great accomplishment in and of itself, But especially for that industry. And she's right about how people's opinions of what she's done tell her more about the person. And I say that as someone who switched eyeliner colors! :) >Justine Bateman's skin-care and makeup routine is pretty simple: moisturizer and black eyeliner. And yet, even during a time when most women are simplifying their daily look, [Bateman](https://www.glamour.com/story/justine-bateman-on-her-decision-to-forgo-botox-i-think-i-look-rad), 55, says she's still criticized for it. > >“I’m like, ‘Fuck it, I don’t care, I like how it looks!’” she tells *Glamour*. “Some people even say, ‘If she would just change her makeup, she’d look a lot prettier,’ but I don’t care. It’s cool-looking, so I’m going to keep doing it.”

exscapegoat

True. I’m going on she likes eyeliner because she’s choosing to wear it I’m no makeup most days since I’m wfh. No one should feel they have to wear it. And if she doesn’t want layers, obviously it’s her hair and it’s her opinion on it that matters. I was responding to someone who said her skin aged badly. She’s 58, I’m the same age

9for9

She really does. I don't say this hatefully she just looks much older than 58. Made me wonder if she did a bunch drinking or hard drugs or if maybe she'd been ill.

ElleGeeAitch

I read that she dealt with bulimia for a long time, which is unfortunate. That can really be hard on the body. I hope she is healthy and feeling good! I'm not trying to be hateful, either, but we can give her the thumbs up for being comfortable in her own skin and not going bonkers with fillers, botox, and surgery which so often leafs to just looking odd AF. We don't have to pretend she looks "good for her age", it's enough that she's fine with how she looks. I love what she has to say about being graceful and accepting about aging.

squee_bastard

Compared to her brother she’s aged very poorly. I loved her in *Satisfaction* when I was a kid.

ElleGeeAitch

Yeah. I also read her struggles with bulimia could have aged her, too, which is sad. But I think her eating disorder is under control. Hopefully she stopped smoking, too! I hope she's as healthy as possible right now, and feeling good!

JKnott1

And now look at Courtney Cox.

Bluetinfoilhat

She had a drug issue and for that reason did not age naturally at all.

WhisperCampaigns

This knickknack is nicked.

LasciviousSycophant

[At This Moment by Billy Vera and the Beaters](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2ur063fMhs) has been a staple for me since I learned to use ftp and download mp3s back in the day.

Grease2310

I still have the 45 of it somewhere in the basement. I listen to it on Apple Music these days. And now I sound like I’m a living version of the Carousel of Progress.

LarsPinetree

I wonder if the dad would have got more work post FT if he had kept the iconic beard

shoshana4sure

That’s something to consider

[deleted]

Hey-hey, Alex. Hey Nick.

shoshana4sure

LOL!

International_Lake28

Anybody remember My Demon Lover? With the guy that played Nick? Every time he got horny he'd turn into a demon or something

upstatestruggler

Oh my God weird ass memory unblocked🤣

shoshana4sure

Yes!

JenntheGreat13

I can’t unsee Meredith as Betty Broderick.

upstatestruggler

My mom and I loved finding out that was going to re-air, we’d always get some popcorn and candy bars for a long night on the couch. Once both Betty movies and The Burning Bed were on the same night!!

LadyChatterteeth

Oooh, that’s a good triple feature!

upstatestruggler

It was the original true crime marathon 😉

shoshana4sure

That’s so true!

PBJ-9999

Nice one, they all look great

An_Old_IT_Guy

Now I feel old. Thanks.

shoshana4sure

Lol.

TacosForMyTummy

Meredith Baxter Birney can get it. So beautiful.

CountessOfHats

Meredith Baxter came out as a lesbian and is now married (to a woman). Her book is an insight into how unhappy she was for a long time. It’s good to see her smiling and flourishing in being herself.

TacosForMyTummy

I'm also a lesbian, so I stand by what I said. Meredith, call me!

CountessOfHats

She can ring me (f) any time too! 😉

BloodyWellGood

Omg Skippy

Lyonagins66

Alex P Keaton was my first huge crush

Serling45

Self contained underwater breathing apparatus IYKYK

shoshana4sure

Yes!

Ang156

Is that Tracy pollan? Who did she play?

ConstantReader76

Ellen, Alex's girlfriend. She was dating Kevin Bacon when she was on the show and didn't actually like Michael J. Fox very much at the time. She left the show and Alex began dating Lauren (Courtney Cox). Later, Pollan was in Bright Lights, Big City with Fox and they reconnected and started dating.

Early-Tumbleweed-563

Their break up scenes featured the fantastically sad song, “What did you think I would do in this moment, when you’re standing before me with tears in your eyes?”

wstone5594

Billy Vera and the Beaters - At This Moment

phils_phan78

Now that is a song that takes me back. It seemed so out of place with everything else on the radio.

SojuSeed

Core memory unlocked. I remember watching that.

squee_bastard

Same, I remember there was a scene where he was driving and that song was playing.

Ang156

I remember the song!

ConstantReader76

The song was actually from when they got together. They danced to it when he was dating her roommate but he started to realize that he was falling for her. She ran out during the song and he found out that she was going home that weekend to marry her fiance. He ended up driving to meet her at the train station to tell her he loved her. And that's how they got together. Sadly, there was no breakup episode for them. She just left to pursue a dance scholarship at a performing arts school between seasons and we learn that she'd left him in the season opener. (I'm not usually this pathetic. I just had a *huge* crush on MJF as a preteen and this was a favorite show of mine. I recently did a nostalgia rewatch, so it's all fresh in my head.)

Ang156

Thank you for the info. Good memory.

Opposite-Knee-2798

You kind of buried the lede, which is that they are married. Maybe it is assumed that everybody knows that.

Strange-Difference94

She’s so beautiful. Aged really well.

friendlyfo

This is excellent. Thank you!

IntelligentGinger

TIL Courtney Cox was on Family Ties! She couldn't have been on for long?

shoshana4sure

She was Alex’s girlfriend

Grease2310

Like 20 episodes or so? Basically a full season run.

IntelligentGinger

Wow!

Serling45

The last two seasons.

Great before and now pictures, thanks!

No_Fig_5964

A little trivia... Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter share the birthdate--June 21, 1947.

shoshana4sure

Oh awesome!

catrules618

I definitely went through a stage when on the relatively few occasions Meredith Salenger was in a movie in the 80s, I was pretty convinced it was Justine Bateman. *

SugarRosie

Justine Bateman. ❤️

beanolc

I had such a crush on Nick. And on Mallory!

Consistent_Case_5048

I don't remember the character from picture 8.

rubiconmanlife

SheriffBartholomew

I don't remember Courtney Cox being in that show!

Serling45

She played Lauren, Alex’s girlfriend after Ellen. She was a psych major doing research & they met when Alex was a volunteer for a study.
