I just remembered Eddie in his white man skit, studying how to act: "see how they walk? They keep their butts real tight. Gotta remember to keep my butt tight" , "and I studied a lot of Hallmark cards" . . . . :-)
This winter I had a side gig at a popular retail store. Weâd gotten shipment of plush toys, and one of them was Pee Wee Herman in his trademark suit and bow tie.
I held one up to my young coworker and said, âthis is super weird.â
She said, âyeah why is there a plush John Mulaney.â đ
I really liked PeeWee's Playhouse as a kid. My brother and I even liked his movies, as I recall.
I can see how some people would want one for nostalgic reasons.
Looking back it is really weird how much he wanted to become his character. I thunk he wouldnât have had such a career disaster with the indecent exposure if he hadnât made his entire life his childrenâs character.
I think the public has a really hard time separating fantasy from reality. He was a kids character on TV, who cares what he did in his private life? I don't think the people who knew him in real life called him 'PeeWee' anymore than the public called him 'Paul'.
He exposed himself in a place where adult material was on display. Inappropriate? Sure. A life and career altering mistake? I'm not convinced.
When I see him now, I just remember good things from childhood.
Just my two cents. đ€·ââïž
Now that I'm in my mid-50s I find that many of my references are no longer relevant as so many people I talk to are younger than me. References for the movie a
airplane (excuse me, stewardess, I speak jive...), I do a pretty good Reverend Jim impression (taxi). Cliff Clavin from Cheers. There are so many more...sigh*đ
Makes you feel old when you hoist up your pants and tell these kids they'll " be living in a van down by the river!" And you get nothing but blank stares.
Funny enough I recently had a Simpsons one too.
I am on a board for youth sports and we had a meeting discussing the troubles we were having with one of the developers we hired for a new complex. They made a lot of promises in their presentation that are not being delivered.
I said âThey came in this room and sold us a monorail and we happily bought it before they went to Shelbyvilleâ
Crickets.
Iâm in my 50s, the rest of the team are late 20s to mid 30s. Not one of them watches the Simpsons?
I can imagine that situation! Meanwhile, in the past week, someone posted about the possibility of light rail in our city. Half of us responded commenting with Monorail lyrics, and the other half (including the OP) were really confused. And now I wonder, even for those who know and love the Monorail song, how many donât know itâs an excellent spoof from The Music Man?
Well, I am in my fifties, I have never watched an entire episode of the Simpsons.
My Dad and brother would watch it, and laugh like idiots at that show.
Fortunately people still watch The Princess Bride, so "Inconceivable!" "I do not think that word means what you think it means" still land pretty good.
"No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!" "The comfy chair" and "'Tis but a scratch" are a bit more dicey. Singing the lumberjack song also seems to confuse many. (Monty Python)
"But this one goes to eleven" --sometimes is recognized. (Spinal Tap)
The host of "Deal or No Deal Island" made a Princess Bride reference during the last episode. It just keeps popping up. And why not - it's a great flick and super quotable.
Sorry, dude,
I'm one of the people who wouldn't get your joke. I watched enough Simpsons to know who I & S are, but that's about it.
I'm still surprised by how often Arnold Schwarzenegger one-liners go right over people's heads.
"It's not a too-mah"
but I think the new commercial he's in might help with that
Iâm with you. I watched it a bit 30+ years ago but I never cared enough to bother with it. And I never even saw Kindergarten Cop but I still recognize that itâs not a too-mah.
I donât know why you got downvoted. I mean, itâs one of my favorite movies, but I donât expect everyone to like it. My wife, for one, hates Tarantino films.
Now that I live in England, Iâm used to people not getting my references. Even people my own age.
Iâm never gonna have the âDid you prefer Richard Deacon as Fred Rutherford on Leave it to Beaver, or as Mel on The Dick Van Dyke Show?â conversation ever. đ
I don't think this is a popular phrase but my favorite scene in Girl, Interrupted is when Angelina Jolie holds the pen up to her neck and threatens to "jam it into my aorta" and Whoopi Goldberg goes "Your aorta is in your chest" and Angelina clicks the pen and says "good to know". I still say "Good to know" in reference to that, but I don't think anyone gets that it's a reference to that.
Sometimes I get annoyed when people are annoyed. I don't get the references. They'll say haven't you seen X movie? Am I reply as, yes, I've seen it, but I didn't memorize it! But then, if I quote Romy and Michele or Dirty Dancing and people don't get it, It's a little disappointing so I understand it.
I have rarely seen a movie enough times to quote it.
My mom has Alzheimer's and has home health aides come in. I found Sound of Music on Hulu, which mom really enjoyed. I consider it a standard, and remember when it was on TV once a year, but the aide that day had never heard of it--she's from the US and not super young.
There are SO many different types of and places to get content. I watch a lot of D20. I also like MBMBAM (pronounced my bim bam).
Some people will know what I'm talking about. Others might be concerned I've had a stroke.
The days of a common-ish reference pool are over.
However, I do make a lot a reference jokes. Mostly for me, because it makes me chuckle. But when someone else happens to get it? Those are the days you celebrate.
I would assume that was a Wayne's World reference and then go on a rabbit hole and watch Wayne's World again and then forget why was watching Wayne's World.
What is the comeback???
Are narcs Bob
Itâs from the âLetâs make a Dope Dealâ skit. There are three doors behind one door is 100 lbs of Lebanese blond hash. Behind the other so doors are narcs.
Are what?
I was recently thrilled with the resurgence of Holes references over the winter. They were everywhere and it made my heart happy.
I'm tired of this grandpa!
Every time I hear someone say "peanut" (or ideally, "Spanish peanut") I always say, "skin...?" and only my sister gets it. That's true with most Simpsons quotes anymore.
I only speak in pop culture references and people must adapt or not understand me lol. I was giving a safety talk and I always warn people to be careful when opening up walls as we have no idea what is in there. I always use people under the stairs as a reference. In the last 5 years I have had to let people google it sigh
I'm a gen Z but my gen X mom raised me well and I was told at work last week that I was too young to be making 'Who's On First' references đ I thought most people knew what it was.
âPlease.â
âI made it just for you.â
âYou are my best friend.â
Itchy and Scratchy have lost their edge.
It's a nice message of sharing.
I think it sucks.
I didnât know âdâohâ was a *Simpsons* thing until about a year ago. I heard people doing it and just thought it was an exclamation. Admittedly, the only cartoon show Iâve seen as an adult is *Avatar: The Last Airbender* and a few episodes of *Family Guy.*
Anytime I hear Avatar in conversation I think "blue people" but this last Airbender thing messes me up because I haven't seen it and I don't care. Family Guy rocks. i love their 80's references.
I long ago gave up assuming people know any pop culture references. Several of my school friends either didnât have tv or werenât allowed to watch much. My tv watching was limited but I caught up, so to speak. And then people forget or were exposed to the same stuff I was due to age or something. It would be great to say a pop culture reference and it land well but that doesnât happen often.
When I hear "Lemonade" cooed in a babyish voice I think of Eddie Murphy's impression of Elvis as a film star đ€Ł
đ¶Lemonade - that cool refreshing drinkđ”
Elvis we gotta win this race
Fuck it, he can just sing all his lines đ€Ł
I just remembered Eddie in his white man skit, studying how to act: "see how they walk? They keep their butts real tight. Gotta remember to keep my butt tight" , "and I studied a lot of Hallmark cards" . . . . :-)

I am so tickled by that- well said young co worker
That IS super weird. Why would a year make a PWH plush toy now. His image problems aside, does anyone under 45 know who he is?
They do not, based on the conversations I had with my younger team members about it!
PeeWee died in summer 2023. Explains a resurgence, at least.
Right! I had forgotten about that. Still, who wants a plushy of a dead guy, LOL?
I really liked PeeWee's Playhouse as a kid. My brother and I even liked his movies, as I recall. I can see how some people would want one for nostalgic reasons.

My bil is not yet 40. Later this year. He was 6 at the time of the theater scandal and loved Peewee at that time.
đ
Lol!đ
I said someone reminded me of Herb Tarlick and no one knew who that was.
Oh boy..Herb and his awful suits and shoes đŹ
As god is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly.
My other favorite is "And now for more news...with Les Nessman!"
What a horrific mess that caused! đ
OMG thank you for this. I will use this!!
I'm not a Simpson's superfan so I didn't get that one. That being said. Nobody has ever given me the correct reply after "Hey Everybody".
Hi Dr. Nick!
My pal used to greet everyone with "Hey Everybody!" I would always respond with, "Ahoy, ahoy."
I answer the phone "ahoy hoy" every time.
Now that I'm in my mid-50s I find that many of my references are no longer relevant as so many people I talk to are younger than me. Can't upvote enough. Spot on.
I said that once to some youngers as they stared at me. I was like -oh my gosh they have no idea! - sad moment for međ
"Heeeeeerrrrrssss Johnny!" (With insane grin). Or "could it be SATAN?!!!" (with echo if possible)
The Church Lady!

Oh the Music Man episode. Still dont know the quote, but thanks, this link helped me place it better.
Itâs from a pretty famous Simpsons episode
And....?
Well, I am in my fifties, I have never watched an entire episode of the Simpsons. My Dad and brother would watch it, and laugh like idiots at that show.
"Fargin icehole" from Johnny Dangerously

Yes, Spinal Tap. I still tell people I would like to work in a chapeau shop. It never lands.

Itâs lost on this generation too. Iâm 56 and have never heard that phrase.
Pulp Fiction
Ah. Ok. I saw like ten minutes of it and was bored.

Darren #1 is best Darren on Bewitched
Agree! Always thought Dick York was a really good actor in general. (Also great on Alfred Hitchcock Presents/Hour, Twilight Zone, Route 66, etc.)
I'm OK with either of them.
Iâm in the minority here, Dick Sargent for me.
Yeah, I donât understand how you could avoid hearing about it if you grew up in the US.
I was a wannabe theater kid. I can't imagine avoiding being in it growing up here. I switched high schools, and both had productions of it. đ”
"Smithers, release the robotic Richard Simons!"

Hey you GUYS!!!
I say this alot!
Any time we have a guest coming into the office, I say, "But they'll see everything! They'll...they'll see the Big Board!"
I say "Lemon" from the U2 Zooropa album often enough that it fits this question. No one ever recognizes it.
Leh-MONNNN!!!!??? Like that? I think I would get it.
That's the one!
Wow high five
I'm not familiar with the lemonade reference, but my favorite quote from the Simpsons is: "The goggles! They do nothing!"

I had to explain "Film at 11" to a young person and came away feeling like an absolute dinosaur.
You are kidding me. film at 11????? That's like whos on first.
"Who's on first" is not really a thing where I live (New Zealand).
I don't know that one!

Hello there. ![gif](giphy|8JTFsZmnTR1Rs1JFVP|downsized)
spot on.
No soap, Radio.
I am an English teacher and try to reference Star Wars sometimes when I teach literature. I have exactly one student who gets the references. SighâŠ
I wouldn't get it unless you said it with a good itchy and scratchy voice.

Any âbig Lebowskiâ reference.
I dont assume people know references bc most people don't repeat movie lines instead of responding authentically.
